Global Update
A donor recently quoted a family proverb: Money is only as good as the good it will do. In each issue of IMPACT, you see an update which lists the number of International-trained alumni, National-trained alumni, and alumni associations. Now that we have passed a total of 90,000 alumni, many are expressing eagerness to pass 100,000. The increasing numbers are encouraging, but they are more than statistics. They are indicators of good that is being done around the globe through leaders inspired and empowered by Haggai Institute training. National ministry multiplies the good that a donors investment has set in motion.

The Haggai Institute Vision Goes Viral

National ministry embraces the vision of Haggai Institute and offers training that drives our mission forward.
Dr. Beverly Y. Upton A few days ago, I stood shoulder to shoulder with a very special group of leaders. They are the men and women of Indias National Alumni Association. This year, they celebrate 25 years of equipping Indian leaders to evangelize. Most are International-trained alumni. All are committed to bringing Haggai Institutes methods into the heart of their nation and culture. Was I moved? Almost to tears. What a testimony to our donors impact on the worlds second largest nation. And it has all been done through the leverage of National ministry! National ministry embraces the vision of Haggai Institute and offers training that drives our mission forward. Through National ministry, leaders unable to attend an International Training Session can still receive the Haggai Institute experience often in their own language and through curricula tailored to the needs of their particular culture or professional group. National Training Seminars and Regional Training Seminars are accredited by Haggai Institute and must be residential, at least five days in length, and facilitated by an approved faculty member. Standards and formats for local, city, and area seminars are more flexible and are adapted to meet specific local training needs. And heres the amazing thing: none of these seminars requires funding from our donors.

In the last few years, National ministry has gone viral, and alumni associations now flourish in more than 100 countries. Training others to do the same is no longer a background detail: it is a key part of the multiplication that prepares more leaders to evangelize. The outcomes in evangelism, Christian influence, and even the development of future faculty are huge. For donors, those who ignite the entire process through their funding of the International Training Sessions, this new development only makes Haggai Institute an even better return on investment.

Only six years separate the first International Training Session and the first National Training Seminar. Today, two-thirds of the alumni impacting their nations were trained at the national level, and many more have been equipped for evangelism through local seminars. National ministry shows the global community in action.
1. What is H.I. National ministry?
The term National ministry describes all the alumni-driven activities and programs worldwide including all levels of seminars, National faculty development, and alumni associations.

2. Why do National ministries exist?

Many alumni want to collaborate in order to pass on their training and to evangelize their nations. Typically, they start at the local or city level. Later, local alumni associations join together to create a national association, which will usually act in a coordinating role for all the alumni activity in a country. Brazil has a unique corporate model where a group of International-trained alumni run National Training Seminars and shorter training events geared toward churches and Christian organizations.

Recently, we set up the Haggai Institute Alumni Advisory Council (HIAAC) to build a bridge on a global level between Haggai Institute and the activities of the alumni, helping to keep everyone focused on the original vision and mission.

3. How many alumni associations are there?

Right now, there are 490 alumni associations in 107 nations. The number is going up all the time.

4. What sort of training happens in National ministry?

The type that most closely resembles International Training Sessions is the National Training Seminar. This must be residential, last at least five days, and be facilitated by an approved faculty member. In addition, alumni associations run a variety of local or area seminars that are tailored to meet particular local needs, including weekend and three-day events. In all countries except Brazil, training is initiated and run by local alumni associations, with national associations providing guidance, support, faculty coordination, and (in the case of National Training Seminars) formal accreditation.

5. Why not send everyone to an International Training Session?

Eight thousand fully qualified leaders who are fluent in English, Arabic, or Mandarin are waiting for places in our International Training Sessions. But many capable national leaders are unable to attend an International Training Session due to time, resources, and language constraints. National ministry extends Haggai Institute training to these men and women, equipping them to reach cultures and language groups where evangelism skills are badly needed.

6. Who funds the National Training Seminars?

Since 1988, H.I. alumni have raised local funds to run their National ministry programs. For donors in the West, this represents a massive leverage of their investment in Haggai Institute.

10. Do those figures include the 100 others that International-trained alumni commit to train?
Only partly. Some alumni serve as faculty members in National ministry. But a majority of the participants do not belong to an association and are passing on their training in their own churches and organizations.

7. Does Haggai Institute set up alumni associations?

No. Alumni associations are grassroots movements formed by alumni, but we do provide encouragement and assistance through a team of International Representatives who work closely with alumni associations to identify future applicants for International Training Sessions.

11. Are faculty trained for National Training Seminars?

Yes. National alumni associations must provide proper faculty development in order to lead National Training Seminars. Worldwide, there are now more than 1,000 National faculty members.

8. How much control does Haggai Institute have over National ministries?
The cooperation of alumni is spontaneous, not centrally organized. We have agreements with National alumni associations to safeguard training standards, our logo and our trademark, and in return, the National alumni associations administer these agreements with the local associations. Recently, we set up the Haggai Institute Alumni Advisory Council (HIAAC) to build a bridge on a global level between Haggai Institute and the activities of the alumni, helping to keep everyone focused on the original vision and mission. The group meets every three years and is composed of the presidents and secretaries/executive directors of the various National alumni associations.

12. Do National-trained alumni go on to become International-trained alumni?

In a few cases, National-trained alumni apply to attend an International Training Session. We have no official count, but we estimate less than five percent attend both levels of training.

15. Do National ministries focus only on training?

No. Where National ministries spring up, alumni are making the Haggai Institute vision happen. They pray together, share their goals, and sometimes team up to evangelize.

13. What is a Regional Training Seminar?

These are specialized events where National alumni associations work together to provide training across two or more countries. For instance, an event held in French-speaking Africa is labeled a Regional Training Seminar when participants come from two or more different countries.

9. How many National-trained and Local-trained alumni does Haggai Institute have?
At the beginning of 2013, there were 62,468 National-trained alumni. In addition, based on the programs of only three countries, we estimate that well over 200,000 people have received local or area training.

14. Why are training programs held in the Middle East and in Mandarin now classified as International Training Sessions?
This reflects the strategic importance attached to the Middle East and China. Also, both programs are centrally funded and meet the same training standard as the English-language programs taught at

One Vision, Many Faces

The original seed of National ministry has taken root in many different lands and flourished in various forms. But everywhere, the vision is the same. More than ever, International-trained alumni are networking and pooling resources so that others can share in the life-transforming experience of Haggai Institute training.

FUTURE HISTORIANS MAY WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED HERE.

The first National Training Seminar took place in Thailand in 1975. A key objective was to cater to influential Thai executives who were unable to spare five weeks to train in Singapore. One of them explained, If I left my business for five weeks, there wouldnt be anything left when I returned. The recent fall of Cambodia and Vietnam to Communism added extra urgency. Missionaries faced increasing difficulty in getting visas for Thailand, and readily admitted their days were numbered. Thai Christians felt that time for evangelism in Thailand was running out. Twenty-six leaders attended this first five-day National Training Seminar. Dr. Won Sul Lee, who then served as Dean of the Graduate School of Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea, was on the faculty for that first seminar. When it concluded, he remarked, Future historians may want to know what happened here . . . .

In the 1970s, after some business leaders said they couldnt spare the time to attend an International Training Session, Haggai Institute began a new venture. Since then, National ministry has expanded rapidly both in the number of countries covered and in the number of people trained.

Inaugural National Training Seminars are conducted in Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.

2001

The number of regional representatives rises to 16.

2003

Mandarin International Training Sessions in China expand to meet international standards.

2007

The rst Asia-Pacic H.I. Alumni Summit takes place in Manila, Philippines.

The rst all-Africa alumni conference is held in South Africa.

H.I. alumni in Indonesia hold the rst H.I. Local Training Seminar in the tsunami-devastated Aceh Province.

Russia holds its rst National Training Seminar with 24 leaders. Sundar Sangma becomes VP International Ministry Development.

2008

Syrian alumni complete their second National Training Seminar despite worsening civil unrest. Ethiopian women leaders meet for a National Training Seminar in Addis Ababa. The second Asia-Pacic H.I. Alumni Summit is held in Bali, Indonesia.

INDONESIA: FIRE AND SPIRIT

Indonesias diverse and energetic National ministry is reaching the unreachable according to the chairperson of the advisory board, Maimunah Natasha. Haggai Institute training has burned the coldhearted leaders to be on fire, building bridges for Jesus to enter into their lives. Indonesia already has 80 local H.I. alumni associations. Its model of alumni ministry part corporate, part grassroots combines the energies of the nations alumni to achieve great things through powerful coordination and quality control.

H.I. National-trained alumna: Marlyne Pattiwael After attending a Haggai Institute National Training Seminar in March 2011, Marlynes heart was filled with a burning passion to share the Gospel. On convocation day, she visited her best friend and told her about Jesus. Since then, she has evangelized 70 students, colleagues, and friends. Her goal is to disciple 100 people in two years. H.I. National-trained alumnus: Paulus Wuryanto This businessman was so fired up after attending a National Training Session that he requested a leadership seminar for 28 staff members and 39 senior managers of Indonesia Telecom. Two seminars have already taken place, and he now plans to make Haggai Institute training a standard spiritual leadership program for all Christian employees of the company.

Every time I witness the fire and the spirit, I tear with gratitude. We thank God for His unending grace and empowerment. We have so many faithful servants involved in Haggai Institute training.

THE PHILIPPINES: NO PLACE UNREACHED

The nearly 2,000 H.I. Nationaltrained alumni in the Philippines occupy every professional niche from farming to engineering, from the media to the military, and from evangelism to politics. Because they are distributed across the nations 7,107 islands, a majority of Filipinos can be introduced to the Good News. In addition, over 5,000 Christian leaders have attended Local and Area Training Seminars organized by Haggai Institute alumni.

National-trained alumna: Dr. Jossie Barrios Olea Moved by her passion for those in desperate need, Dr. Olea has traveled as far as Nepal to minister to women, the elderly, and youth. Medical consultant to GMF Medical Clinic, she gained so much from attending a National Training Seminar in 2012 that, for a subsequent National Training Seminar in Mindanao, Philippines, she contributed 10,000.00 pesos (U.S. $250) to pay the registration fees of two pastors who minister to the areas Blaan tribal groups.

In this country of strong religious traditions, one of the biggest challenges is getting evangelistic expertise into the hands of Christians who are not strong English speakers. National and Local Training Seminars do exactly this focusing on Malay and other minority languages. Among Malaysias National-trained alumni are parliamentarians, the leader of a major indigenous denomination, and the entrepreneur behind an influential cable TV network.

We praise God for Haggai Institute and the generous donors who started us on this task. Our aim is to plant many local chapters and, through these networks, organize the six-day national seminars. We now have 16 local chapters and have conducted 48 National Training Seminars.

National and International ministries complement each other. It is the quality of the staff, faculty, and seminars that keeps Haggai Institute on the cutting edge. It is their commitment and passion for what they are doing that impacts the National participants and fires their zeal for evangelism.

In April 2013, the Haggai Institute India Alumni Ministry celebrated its Silver Jubilee. It has already trained over 5,800 leaders at the National level and has 105 city alumni associations. Sundar Sangma, VP of International Ministry Development, believes that the key to Indias success is the alumnis ownership of the vision. This is one of the best models to sustain the ministry. With so many alumni working together, logistics can be a challenge. But that does not compromise the impact of their training for evangelism.

National-trained alumna: Surbhi Kapur Founder of a moms in prayer ministry, Surbhi now shares the Gospel wherever she goes. The National Training Seminar she attended equipped her to evangelize and built her reputation as a prayer warrior. National-trained alumnus: Sunil Meshram Sunil has taken the Gospel into the marketplace. An engineer working in the IT/telecom industry, he attended a National Training Seminar in 2006. He says, Haggai Institute faculty and International-trained alumni really reinforced my desire to be a witness for Christ in the marketplace. National-trained alumna: Mercy Pushpalatha Mercys students learn to be responsible and useful citizens and to show Christ through everything they do. As principal of Lady Doak College, she strives to provide every student with a quality Christian education. H.I. National training, she says, helped me bring my faith to work.

THE SUMMITS ARE THE FOOTHILLS

We want to train more leaders for evangelism with the utmost passion and in the best possible ways. On that basis, Asian, Eurasian, and Pacific alumni came together in September 2010 for the first Asian H.I. Alumni Summit, which was held in Manila, Philippines. It was a business meeting that crackled with the fire of shared passion for evangelism. Another summit followed two years later in Bali, Indonesia, close to the place where Dr. John Edmund Haggai hammered out the organizations founding principles in the 1960s. This is high-profile ownership of the vision. Asian H.I. alumni have committed to build vibrant Haggai Institute alumni associations and empower them to take ownership of the emerging city centers and to organize larger numbers of top-quality and lifetransforming H.I. National Training Seminars. One alumnus at the 2010 summit gained such a passion for souls that he immediately witnessed to six people within two days of returning home.

H.I. TRAINING IMPACT IN BRAZIL

Brazil has a corporate model of National ministry, with a small office running National Training Seminars at a highly professional standard. On average, eight Portuguese-language National Training Seminars take place every year. To date, 6,603 men and women have taken part in 115 National Training Seminars. Local training takes the form of church seminars. To date, 1,354 church seminars have reached 45,567 participants. The Brazilian National ministry is vibrant and growing, with an increasing number of International-trained alumni getting involved.

A Legacy of Giving
he became a partner, and the company changed to DunkinLewis, Inc. Back then, we had five people covering 10 southeastern states. Now, we have 40 employees and over 100 part-time staff, and we represent more than 40 manufacturers in the hunting and fishing industries, he says. I met Dr. Haggai through J.I. McCormick, one of the founding members of Haggai Institute. After talking to Dr. Haggai and hearing him outline Haggai Institutes mission, I knew we needed to support what he was doing. It is the most costeffective way we know to reach people for Christ. Charles gives more than money, however. He served on Haggai Institutes board for many years and is a trustee emeritus. Ive had the most rewarding experience being part of Haggai Institute. Now, our granddaughter, board member Grace Marie Small, is carrying on the tradition.

Being a donor gives us the ability to affect peoples lives in many countries around the world, says Charles Dunkin. Over the years, weve met many Christian leaders from different parts of the world and heard their testimonies of what they have been able to accomplish for Christ. Getting to know some of those leaders weve had a part in training has meant so much to us and inspired us to keep giving.

Charles and his wife, Gladys, have supported Haggai Institute for 40 years. The son of a sharecropper, Charles grew up in Dallas County, Alabama. After high school, he joined the Army, married his high school sweetheart, and eventually attended the University of Alabama. He joined Joe Lewis and Associates, a sales and marketing company. In 1970,

A National Training Seminar gives the participants the benefit of interactive creativity that relates to their unique evangelism challenges and efforts. Since 1969, our Internationaltrained alumni have pledged to pass on their training. We ask them to reach an additional 100 leaders with Haggai Institute skills, and our research shows that, on average, they far exceed that goal. National Training Seminars provide a support structure to that commitment, including curriculum requirements and a system to train national faculty. In the early years, donors generously funded that program. Today, donors contribute nothing: it rests on the power of the Holy Spirit and the determination of alumni to carry forward the vision of Haggai Institute with their own resources.
