The Student Government of Seattle University Petition Initiative The Petition Initiative (PI) is designed to give clarity, direction, and gravity to student initiatives. It is also intended to foster leadership development and provide issue-based organizing opportunities for Seattle U students within their own community. Modeled after online petition sites like We the People on whitehouse.gov or Change.org, the PI places signature goals and deadlines on student petitions with the promise of Student Government and Seattle U Administration follow through upon completion of the stated goals.1 Process Starting the Petition- The student comes to the SGSU office and requests to make a petition. SGSU designs the google form, makes the student an administrator, and outlines signature goals and sets a deadline with the student 250 Signatures- meeting with the relevant SGSU Representative and SGSU Internal Chief of Staff to further the development of the Petition. SGSU will post the student petition over their social media platforms to assist the petition in gaining wider notoriety. 500 Signatures- meeting with the SGSU President, relevant SGSU Rep, and SGSU Internal Chief of Staff as well as an SGSU advisor to discuss the petitioners next steps. The SGSU President, in consultation with the SGSU team, decides the level and urgency of response required to the Petition.2 If the Petition requires a response from university administration, the SGSU President and relevant SGSU representative meet with the Vice President for Student Development to discuss the Petition and possible remedies, which may include review by the Executive Vice President and/or the Presidents Cabinet. Upon review, the university administrator/s will collaborate with SGSU and the petition initiators to determine a response. Guarantee In all cases the petitioners, and thereby the student body, will receive a reply from the individuals who have the authority for responding to the request of the petition.
