PREVENTION EDUCATION CURRICULUM

The New Wave of Child Abuse Prevention Education


The Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe child abuse and bullying prevention education curriculum is an evolution of the Childhelp Good-Touch Bad-Touch (GTBT) program delivered in schools nationally since 1983. Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe is a research-based, comprehensive violence prevention curriculum that equips 1st through 6th grade children with the skills they need to play a signi cant role in the prevention or interruption of physical abuse, sexual abuse, bullying or sexual harassment in their own lives. The curriculum addresses todays societal risks posed by the Internet and cell phones. The Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe program o ers a 21st century approach to the prevention of abuse by utilizing web-based tools, a curriculum on internet safety skills and bullying as well as a redirected focus on adult responsibility and skill building. The curriculum is culturally competent and designed to engage the state, school, facilitator, teacher, student, parent and designated safe adult(s) in the protection of our children.

Program Highlights
Includes education on all forms of abuse, including those occurring through the use of technology, such as cyber bullying, sexting and Internet predators. Engages children through a broad-based understanding of developmental stages including gendered and psychological principles of learning and behavior change. Each grade level builds upon the other and is age-speci c and appropriate. Focuses on community engagement and the identi cation of safe adults so that children are not solely responsible for their safety. Utilizes resistance strategies to increase the childs self-esteem and self-e cacy around personal safety, protecting the child from abuse and from falling into the trap of becoming the abuser. Contains materials for high-risk children such as refugees and children with disabilities. Designed for web-based delivery making it more e cient, accessible and economical. Follows states standards set for health and safety education. During the Spring of 2011, the program was piloted in Florida with over 18,000 students in 1,140 classrooms. Universal education is the primary prevention strategy of Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe. As the curriculum aligns with all state standards for health and safety education, Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe perfectly supports the educational requirements and needs of public, charter, private and military-based schools across the country. Through the Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe program, we provide you with the curriculum, tools, materials and training to deliver child abuse prevention and body safety education in your school.
