VIDEO SUMMARY

INTRODUCTION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY

Wan Ritaelfera binti Wan Rusli 55201112133 5BCP

SUMMARY VIDEO 1 Bio fuels are among the promising replacement for non-renewable fossil fuel energy. Biomass can be converted directly into burnable fuel that can be solid, liquid or gasses. Ethanol is an alcohol fuel produced by fermentation of sugar found in food. Biodiesel made from algae, animal fats, or recycle cooking is a renewable, cleaner-burning alternative for petroleum-based diesel fuel as it is a biodegradable as sugar. Biofuels can be produced using numbers of ways such as fermentation, flash pyrolysis, hydrolysis while biodiesel are made by using transesterification. Biomass can also be gasified to produce biogas. The most common biofuels are ethanol that can be used in its purest(that gives better power than gasoline-powered engine) form or by making it as a gasoline additive to power automobiles or other vehicles. The largest national use of ethanol bio fuel exist in Brazil and United State, amounted 88% of the worlds ethanol fuel production in 2010. Bio fuels byproduct can be used as a manure and fertilizer and also as heating fuels in domestic and commercial boilers. The used of bio fuels help in reducing the greenhouse gases as compared to the fossil fuels. Apart from the advantages using bio fuel, there are also some disadvantages. The first one is the increase need of growing crops. The second one is the lack of ethanol or biodiesel pumps at existing filling stations. Other than that, when use for the first time, biodiesel can cause fuel filter clogs. The paint on the automobile may also be dissolve with the use of biodiesel in due course. In cold weather, the biodiesel freezes the fuel system and injection pump. As a conclusion, biofuel has a promising potential. As an alternative to this traditional diesel or gasoline fuel, it is expected to yield significant energy security and environmental advantages to its consumers.

SUMMARY VIDEO 2 AND 3 The video explained the process of producing biomass energy using gasification. The process begins with screening the biomass upon their arrival to the plant. This screening process includes crusher, screen, magnetic separator and dust removing process. Then this dried biomass is fed into CFB gasifier for gasification process and yield several gasses, ashes and hydrocarbons. The reaction chamber undergoes the gasification process which will increase the process temperature up to 700oC. This will convert the SRF into combustible gas. This CFB is designed to be connected with a coal-fired power plan. The hot combustible gas produced at the CFB will adjoined with the plan by heating the boiler prior on moving the turbine, hence producing electricity. Despite the hot combustible gas, there are other by-products yields in the gasification process which are ash and flue gas. The by-products will undergo several processes including filtration in order to produce a clean flue gas which will be release through the flue stack system. The ashes from the flue gas will be sent to land fill while other by product will be used as a recycle product for construction industry. As for this gasification process, about 30 Giga Watt electricity can be generated to supply electricity that can powered 6,000 houses for a year. Since the SRF is known to be maintained, thus it is best to include gasification as a renewable energy.
