THE MOST RELIABLE NEWSPAPER AROUND YOU
New Light of Myanmar
Today, we mark the 68
th
Anniversary of the United
Nations. We have witnessed that the United Nations,
since its inception, has been resolutely implementing its
noble objectives of maintaining international peace and
security and promoting friendly relations among nations.
Additionally, it is also working resolutely to achieve
international cooperation on economic, social, cultural,
or humanitarian character, and also on promoting and
encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental
freedoms for all without any distinction.
One of the core responsibilities of the United Nations
is to build a safer and more secure world. To us, the
United Nations is satisfactorily fulflling this mission.
Peace building mission being implemented by the United
Nations is based on, among others, prevention, mediation,
negotiation, laying foundation for clean government and
good governance, encouraging increased role of civil

supporting UN in taking up challenges

societies, rule of law and preservation of peace. At the
same time, disarmament and non-proliferation efforts are
being pursued.
Millennium Development Goals were adopted to
eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, as well as for the
advancement of social and economic development of the
people of the world by 2015. The historic implementation
of MDGs help saved millions of the poor from severe
poverty. However, development efforts need to continue
and intensify beyond 2015. It is also important that
it must be done through sustainable development. In
deterring adverse consequences for development, we
must also redouble our efforts on disaster-risk reduction
and preparedness for disasters. Other important areas
which need our closer attention are mitigating the impact
of climate change, education for women and health for
children. Encouragement and assistance to countries in
transition must be continued.
While progresses have been achieved in implementing
these goals, new challenges are also emerging with time
and under changing circumstances.
The future United Nations should be responsive to
these challenges and be better positioned to meet these
expectation. It is pertinent that the member states provide
the organization with necessary support and means.
Myanmar will join all member States and peoples in
supporting the Organization in taking up these challenges.
On behalf of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar
and its people, I would like to put on record our recognition
and appreciation for the United Nations for its unwavering
support to our political and socio-economic reforms.
On this auspicious occasion, I would like to reaffrm
our commitment and support to the United Nations in its
quest for more prosperous and peaceful world.

Tokyo, 23 Oct The
education ministry of Japan
has decided that the teach-

from the third grade at el-

the ffth grade under the
current system, a ministry
source said on Wednesday.
The ministry, which
plans to introduce the new

better prepare students for
an international environ-
ment in the future.
Third and fourth grad-
ers will study English once
or twice a week, while ffth

three times a week, accord-

While English is not
currently designated an of-

The senior students of

Thousands of Australians

More than 200 homes

Merkels conservatives
and the Social Democrats
(SPD) start hammering out
compromises on economic,
energy and euro policies on
Wednesday, the opening
day of talks on a coalition
government that should be
in place by Christmas.
Germanys European
partners will be watching
the negotiations closely,
hoping for a swift deal that
allows the bloc to meet
looming deadlines for its
ambitious banking union.
Some allies are hoping
a government that includes
the SPD will take a softer
approach towards strug-
gling southern euro zone
members, but any changes
are likely to be more subtle
than substantial.
The parties, which
ruled together in Merkels
frst term from 2005 to
2009, set out a timeline for
the negotiations on Tuesday
which foresees a deal by the
end of November.
That would give the
two biggest groups in par-
liament a fortnight to sell
their grand coalition
agreement to ordinary party
members. Merkel could
then be formally voted in as
chancellor in parliaments
last session of the year, the
week before Christmas.
Merkels conservatives
easily won elections on 22
September but fell short
of achieving a majority.
Exploratory talks with the
Greens collapsed last week,
allowing Merkel to focus
on opening formal negotia-
tions with the SPD.
Among the central
themes will be agreeing a
minimum wage, overhaul-
ing a renewables law that
has sent energy costs soar-
ing, and fnding funds to
raise public investment on
infrastructure, education
and research a major de-
mand of the SPD.
Europe will also fea-
ture, with the SPD expected
to push for a European f-
nancial transactions tax,
harsh rules for creditors
to bear the cost of failing
banks, and a renewed effort
to stem youth unemploy-
ment in southern Europe.
The new govern-

China will improve the
way it provides fnancial
support to science and tech-
nology development, Fi-
nance Minister Lou Jiwei
said on Tuesday. When de-
livering a report to the coun-
trys top legislature, Lou said
despite increasing fnancial
input into the sector, reforms
are needed to improve the
systems effectiveness.
Basic research relies
heavily on fnancial support
from central government
rather than local govern-
ments or enterprises, and the
proportion of research and
development expenditure
spent on basic research is too
low, said Lou in the report to
the Standing Committee of
the National Peoples Con-
gress. In addition, the sci-
ence and technology funding
system lacks coordination
between departments, and
relations between the gov-
ernment and the market have
not been clearly defned, af-
fecting the effectiveness of
China to better fnance
science and technology
development
fscal support.
Lou said the most fun-
damental way to address
these problems is to further
deepen reform of the science
and technology system. He
said the government will
continue to transform its
functions and build a sci-
ence-technology innovation
system with enterprises as
major players. The govern-
ment will also promote other
forms of fnancial support,
such as angel investment and
government procurement of
services.
Lou said the science
and technology evaluation
system and management of
fnancial funds in the sector
should be improved, and in
the meantime, strengthen the
monitoring and supervision
of its use. The countrys fs-
cal expenditure in science
and technology development
increased from 168.9 billion
yuan in 2006 to 560 billion
yuan in 2012, an average
annual growth rate of 22.73

ter examining Herpes virus

frmed that early humans frst
emerged on the African con-
tinent before spreading out in
disparate groups across the
globe.
The study, published in
PLOS One, examined strains
of herpes simplex virus type
1 collected throughout North
America, Europe, Africa and
Asia in order to gain insight
on early human migration
patterns. We found that all
of the African isolates cluster
together, all the virus from
the Far East, Korea, Japan,
China clustered together, all
the viruses in Europe and
America, with one excep-
tion, clustered together,
Curtis Brandt, professor of
medical microbiology at the
University of Wisconsin-
Madison and senior author of
the study, said in a statement.
Using high-capacity ge-
netic sequencing, University
of Wisconsin-Madison sci-
entists were able to develop a
family tree for the Herpes
virus, emerging in Africa,
bottlenecking in the Middle
East and ultimately spread-
ing to Asia, Europe and the
Americas. Interestingly, the
study also offers some evi-
dence for the theory that Na-

ed from Asian peoples who

UN Secretary-Generals
Message on
United Nations Day
Dear friends,
United Nations Day is a chance to recognize how
much this invaluable Organization contributes to peace
and common progress.
It is a time to refect on what more we can do to
realize our vision for a better world.
The fghting in Syria is our biggest security
challenge.
Millions of people depend on UN humanitarian
personnel for life-saving assistance.
UN experts are working hand-in-hand with the Nobel
Peace Prize-winning Organisation for the Prohibition of
Chemical Weapons to destroy Syrias stockpiles.
And we are pushing for a diplomatic solution to end
suffering that has gone on far too long.
Our most urgent development challenge is to make
sustainability a reality.
The Millennium Development Goals have cut
poverty in half.
Now we must maintain the momentum, craft an
equally inspiring post-2015 development agenda and
reach an agreement on climate change.
This year again, we saw the United Nations come
together on armed confict, human rights, the environment
and many other issues.
We continue to show what collective action can do.
We can do even more.
In a world that is more connected, we must be more
united.
On United Nations Day, let us pledge to live up
to our founding ideals and work together for peace,
development and human rights.

Bottle feeding may increase risk of stomach
obstruction in infants
Washington, 23 Oct
Infants who were bottle fed
were more likely to be at risk
of developing hypertrophic
pyloric stenosis (HPS), a
form of stomach obstruction,
than those who were breast-
fed, US researchers said on
Monday.
The risk appears to be
magnifed when mothers
are older and have had more
than one child, researchers
from the Seattle Childrens
Hospital in the US state of
Washington, reported in the
US journal JAMA Pediat-
rics.
HPS typically occurs
during an infants frst two
months of life and surgery
is needed to correct the ob-
struction, which occurs
because of a thickening of
the smooth muscle layer of
the pylorus, the passage be-
tween the stomach and small
intestines. Despite its inci-
dence of about two cases in
every 1,000 births, its cause
remains unknown. The re-
searchers used birth certif-
cates and discharge data in
the US state of Washington
to examine births between
2003 and 2009 and found
714 infants were admitted
with HPS and had a HPS sur-
gery. The fndings indicated
that the incidence of HPS de-
creased from 14 per 10,000
births in 2003 to 9 per 10,000
births in 2009 while breast-
feeding prevalence increased
from 80 percent in 2003 to
94 percent in 2009.The re-
searchers said that about 19.5
percent of infants who devel-
oped HPS were bottle fed,
compared with 9 percent of
babies who were breastfed,
and the odds of an infant de-
veloping HPS also increased
when mothers were 35 years
and older and had given birth
more than once.
These data suggest
that bottle feeding may
play a role in HPS etiology,
and further investigations
may help to elucidate the
mechanisms underlying the
observed effect modifca-
tion by age and parity, the
researchers concluded.In a
related editorial, Douglas
Barnhart, of the Primary
Childrens Hospital, Salt
Lake City in the US state
of Utah, said the fndings
bring us a step closer to be-
ing able to drop idiopathic
from hypertrophic pyloric
stenosis. While the data
seem convincing that bottle
feeding increases the risk,
the reason is not clear, he
said. Further understand-
ing of the pathogenesis of
hypertrophic pyloric ste-
nosis will come from both
basic research and more de-
tailed epidemiologic stud-
ies. Xinhua

Netfix customer gains reinforce
growth hopes, shares jump
Los angeLes, 23 Oct
Netfix Inc gained more
subscribers than expected at
home and abroad with help
from original series like
Orange is the New Black,
impressing investors who
sent its shares surging nearly
11 percent to a record high
on Monday. Netfix, the big-
gest gainer in the S&P 500
in 2013, quadrupled proft in
the third quarter as it added
a higher-than-expected 1.3
million customers to its sub-
scription video streaming
service in the United States.
The company, which
has invested heavily in orig-
inal series such as political
satire House of Cards,
said it had 31.1 million US
streaming users from July
to September. For the last
three months of the year,
Netfix said it expects to
add about the same number
of US streaming custom-
ers it signed up a year ear-
lier, and will end 2013 with
32.7 million to 33.5 million
users.That keeps the view
alive that this company has
a larger subscriber base
and has pricing leverage in
its corner to extract more
value, said Janney Mont-
gomery Scott analyst Tony
Wible, who rates Netfix a
buy.
Shares rose 10.6 per-
cent after-hours to $392.50,
up from their close of
$354.99 on the Nasdaq. The
stock has racked up succes-
sive highs since September,
as investors bet on its growth
prospects.During the quar-
ter, Netfix released critical-
ly acclaimed prison drama
Orange is the New Black,
part of its push into origi-
nal programming to attract
customers to its $8-a-month
movie and TV streaming
service.Its original series
slate generated buzz during
the quarter, with 14 Emmy
nominations and three wins
for shows including House
of Cards.
The company said it
will double investments in
original programming in
2014, when it will air sec-
ond seasons of both House
of Cards and Orange is
the New Black. Spending
on original shows will re-
main below 10 percent of
its global content expenses.
Netfix was added in Sep-
tember as an option on cable
set-top boxes through two
companies in Europe. CEO
Reed Hastings, in a webcast
after the earnings release,
said he was hopeful Net-

deal with Comcast Corp or
other US cable operators.

Yahoo sought to pause
search rollout with Microsoft
san Francisco, 23 Oct
A US judge on Monday
refused to let Yahoo Inc
YHOO.O delay using Mi-
crosoft Corps Bing search
capabilities in Taiwan and
Hong Kong, affrming an
arbitrators decision in fa-
vor of Microsoft. Yahoo Inc
Chief Executive Marissa
Mayer sought to slow the
rollout of its search partner-
ship arguing that Microsoft
CEO Steve Ballmers de-
cision to retire had raised
concerns, according to court
documents. But US District
Judge Robert Patterson Jr
upheld an arbitrators earlier
ruling in favor of Microsoft.
Yahoo and Microsoft
began a 10-year search
partnership in 2010, before
Mayer took over as Yahoos
CEO. The two companies
hoped their combined efforts
could mount a more com-
petitive challenge to Google
Inc, the worlds No.1 search
engine. The partnership has
not lived up to expectations.
Google remains the domi-
nant search engine, with
roughly two thirds of the US
search market, while Micro-
soft and Yahoos combined
share of the market is essen-
tially unchanged.
Yahoo said it wanted
to pause the process until
Mayer had a chance to dis-
cuss the partnership with
Ballmers successor, ac-
cording to a court fling. Mi-
crosoft said in August that
Ballmer would retire within
12 months. Mayer has criti-
cized the partnership in the
past.
We need to see mon-
etization working better be-
cause we know that it can
and weve seen other com-
petitors in the space illus-
trate how well it can work,
Mayer said at an investor
conference in February. Mi-
crosoft and Yahoo were not
immediately available for
comment. Reuters

Greece cuts of
state funding to far-right
Golden Dawn party
AThens, 23 Oct
Greek lawmakers voted to
cut off state funding to the
far-right Golden Dawn par-
ty early on Wednesday, the
latest effort by the govern-
ment to clamp down on a
party it has branded a neo-
Nazi criminal gang.
Golden Dawn had
steadily risen on the back of
an anti-austerity and anti-
immigrant agenda to be-
come Greeces third-most
popular party, until the kill-
ing of a left-wing rapper by
a party supporter last month
triggered the government
crackdown.
A legislative provision
passed by 235 lawmakers in
the 300-seat parliament sus-
pends state funding to polit-
ical parties if their leaders,
or a tenth of their lawmak-
ers, are charged with in-
volvement in a criminal
organization or acts of
terrorism. The move could
deprive Golden Dawn of a
major fnancial resource.
Athens has earmarked
11 million euros for elected
parties in 2013, including
873,000 euros ($1.20 mil-
lion) for Golden Dawn.
After entering par-
liament last year and ap-
pearing virtually immune
to frequent accusations
of violence against immi-
grants and leftists, the party
has been on the defensive
since the fatal stabbing of
34-year-old Pavlos Fissas.
The killing prompted
prosecutors to investigate
party lawmakers over a
series of crimes and Prime
Minister Antonis caused
Samarass conservative-led
government to probe the
police force. Samaras has
vowed to wipe out the party
and described it as a gang
of neo-Nazis that threatens
democracy. Golden Dawns
leader, Nikolaos Mihalolia-
kos, and two senior law-
makers have been put be-
hind bars pending trial on
charges of participation in
a criminal group. This is
the frst time that elected
politicians have been jailed
in Greece since a military
coup in 1967. Three other
lawmakers, who were ar-
rested, have been freed
pending trial.Reuters

Jerusalem mayor wins re-election
in boost to Netanyahu
JerusAlem, 23 Oct
The Israeli mayor of Jerusa-
lem has won re-election in a
hotly contested race against
a challenger linked to a far-
right opponent of Prime
Minister Benjamin Netan-
yahu.
Former high-tech ty-
coon Nir Barkat won about
51 percent of votes in poll-
ing held on Tuesday, a count
of all ballots showed.
His main rival, Moshe
Lion, polled about 45 per-
cent. Other votes went to a
third candidate.
In a predawn victory
speech to cheering support-
ers on Wednesday, Barkat,
54, called the election one
of the most complicated and
diffcult races he had seen,
but was thankful to voters
he said gave us a mandate

Israeli media said Lion
had also conceded the race.
The Jerusalem contest

across Israel, with a Barkat
victory dealing a blow to his

Promoting rational
thinking
We think, we decide and we make conclusions
on daily basis. our opinions are products of our
thinking. our ways of thinking bases on the
information accessible to us. the media are the
major sources of information. thats why we
used to say, Media shape opinions. Do they
always lead us to the right way?
Providing the most possibly objective
information is the duty of the media outlets.
But there are still unseen interests behind them.
With many emerging media outlets, we now have
a host of sources for information. the dark side
is that we cannot know which one is providing
reliable information or which information
is factual. Most news stories available to us
today are more or less black-and-white sorts.
objectivity of the news stories is questionable.
Not everything in our world is mere story of the
good and the bad. We have then two options:
making media outlets responsible for false
information and educating the people that not
all the written words are factual.
Still the government departments are as
usual in traditional rivalry with the media. to
inculcate the rational thinking in the public,
both the media and the government mechanisms
have to do their parts well, providing factual
information in objective manner.

Washington, 23 Oct
The United States on Tues-
day urged Mozambiques
government and the Rena-

move back from the brink
and take steps to quell an
escalation in tensions that
many worry could disrupt
the countrys strong eco-

The Renamo former

Monday it was terminat-

government forces overran
base of opposition leader

Gorongosa forest.
We are deeply con-
cerned by the escalation in
violence between govern-

members of the opposition
party Renamo, said US
State Department spokes-
woman Marie Harf. We
are encouraging the two
parties to take visible and
decisive steps to de-escalate
the current tense environ-
ment.
Mozambique media re-
ported on Tuesday that sus-
pected Renamo guerrillas

Maringue, just north of the
Gorongosa District, but no
casualties were reported.
Asked whether the at-
tack could provoke more
violence, Harf said: We
are deeply concerned by
this violence and this es-
calation and are urging all
sides to take steps to move
back from the brink and de-
escalate what has been hap-

Swelling lakes in Hol Xil pose

Xining, 23 Oct
Swelling lakes on the
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau,
a notable sign of global

to climate and ecological
experts.
One fooded lake is
now only 8 km away from a

latest satellite monitoring
by the Qinghai Provincial
Academy of Meteorological

Liu Baokang, engineer

in the nature reserve have
been overfowing since
2011 after receiving an
increasing volume of
melted snow from glaciers
on the plateau, known as
the roof of the world.
Liu said the centers
research shows that the
lakes have become a threat
to the railways roadbed
and roads on the Qinghai-

important oil pipelines,
cables and power facilities
that run through the region.
Sitting 4,600 meters

Falguni Pathak: Folk songs have larger appeal
neW Delhi, 23 Oct
Falguni Pathak, who
brought a new favour to
pop music in the late 1990s
Falguni has been a star attraction at Navratri events
with her romantic songs,
has also made several peo-
ple groove to her folk num-
bers replete with dandiya
beats. She says folk music
has a larger appeal in the
country.
For a long time, Pathak,
42, has been a star attraction
at Navratri events during
the festive season and she
makes thousands of peo-
ple dance to her tracks like
Endra meruwa gayi, Cham
cham payaliya and Ayee re
milan ki raat umbre ubhi. I
agree (that folk songs have
larger appeal than other pop
songs) and we always try to
stick to folk. They are very
natural and not made up. I
myself enjoy folk music, so
I always make an effort to
be more close to it, Pathak
told IANS.
She does not hesitate
in accepting that when I
think of music, only folk
music appeals to me the
most.
The Navratri festival,
which goes on for nine
days, concluded recently. It
was a busy time for Pathak
as she was booked to regale
dandiya enthusiasts by per-
forming at the Police Pa-
rade Grounds in Ghatkopar,
Mumbai.

ised by event organising

Sunidhi Chauhan will

The singer slipped
ecstasy to the 33-year-old
woman while the two were
dining at a Los Angeles
restaurant in July 2012, ac-
cording to prosecutors.
The woman said she
did not know that Green
had given her the drug, said
Jane Robison, a spokes-
woman for the district at-
torneys offce.
Ecstasy is a lab-pro-
duced drug that acts as a
stimulant and can cause
hallucinations.
Green, 39, and the un-
named woman went back to
her hotel room after dinner,
prosecutors said.
Celebrity website
TMZ.com reported last
year that the woman had
fled a police report accus-
ing Green of sexual assault.
Robison said the alleged
victim had contacted the
police.
Prosecutors, however,
said there was insuffcient
evidence to charge Green
with rape of an intoxicated
person.
Greens attorney, Blair
Berk, said she was happy
the evidence did not sup-
port the false and unfound-
ed claims made over a year
ago.
Mr Green encouraged
a full and complete investi-
gation of those claims and
he was confdent once con-
ducted he would be cleared
of having any wrongful
intent and it would be es-
tablished that any relations
were consensual, Berk
said in a statement.
As it relates to the
one charge of furnishing or
sharing ecstasy, Mr. Green
will responsibly address
that matter in a court of law
but not comment on it fur-
ther out of respect for the
process, she added.
The singer was ordered
to post $30,000 to remain
free on bail, and is due back
in court on 20 November,
Robison said.

Olympique Marseille, put
three teams on six points in
Group F.
There is a clear leader
in Group G, where Atletico
made it three wins from
three with a 3-0 victory at
Austria Vienna that left
them a point away from the
10 that are usually enough
to send teams into the last
16 of Europes elite club
competition.
With Diego Costa scor-
ing twice, including a stun-
ning solo effort, they went
fve points clear of second-
placed Zenit St Petersburg,
who made the most of the
sixth-minute sending off of
Portos Hector Herrera - the
competitions fastest ever
dismissal from two yellow
cardsto beat their hosts
1-0. In Group E, Chelsea
moved level on six points
with Schalke 04 at the top
with a 3-0 win in Germany
where Torres celebrated his
100th start for the club with
the ffth-minute opener and
another after 69 minutes
before Eden Hazard added
a late goal.
The top two are clear
of third-placed Basel, who
have four points ahead of
Steaua Bucharest on one af-
ter those two teams shared
the spoils in a 1-1 draw in
Romania.
Celtic got their frst
points in Group H after a
James Forrest penalty on
the stroke of halftime and
a defected shot by Beram
Kayal early in the second
half helped them to a 2-1
win over Ajax Amsterdam,
who got a consolation in
added time.
Barca are in charge
of that group with seven
points, while Milanwho
had gone ahead through
Robinhos ninth-minute
opener before Messi lev-
elled after 23 minutes
have fve points. Celtic are
on three points with Ajax
bottom on one.
The days biggest state-
ment of intent came from
2012 European champions
Chelsea, who have now
made amends for the home
defeat by Basel in their
opener with two away vic-
tories. Spaniard Torres, so
often uninspired in domes-
tic competition, once again
shone on the big stage with
two goals and could easily
have had a hat-trick as he
smashed a header against
the bar from just inside the
area. He, like Messi, had
just returned from injury
and his lively contribution
came at just the right time
for his club.
If you do garbage
(against Basel) then you
have to clean it up and we
cleaned it up, Chelsea
manager Jose Mourinho
told Sky Sports. Weve
got two matches at home
so now we are in good con-
dition to qualify and well
try to fnish top. Its an im-
portant victory for us.
The glamour match at
the San Siro where seven-
times European champions
Milan hosted four-times
winners Barcelona fzzled
out in the second half after
a frantic opening period of
pressure from the Italians.

New Final Series will be great, says Olazabal
new York, 23 Oct
The inaugural FedExCup-
style Final Series that tees
off in Shanghai this week
will give the European Tour
a much-needed shot in the
arm after a diffcult year,
said twice major winner
Jose Maria Olazabal.
While the rival US
PGA Tour goes from
strength to strength, the
European circuit has strug-
gled for sponsors and been
badly hampered by the ab-
sence of headline attrac-
tions like Rory McIlroy,
Justin Rose, Luke Donald
and Lee Westwood. With
the majority of the trium-
phant 2012 Ryder Cup team
basing themselves on the
other side of the Atlantic
this season, chief executive
George OGrady has had an
awkward task in selling the
European Tour brand.
The Final Series,
similar to the US circuits
end-of-season Fed-
ExCup extrav-
aganza,
is a sequence of
four events worth
more than $30 million in
total and starts on Thursday
with the BMW Masters in
China.
I think we are going
to see four great tourna-
ments, 2012 Ryder Cup
captain Olazabal told Reu-
ters in an interview.
Its very important for
the European Tour. We are
going to see the top players
c o m - ing back
to play
in these
event s
and its
a good
attraction
for the tour, for the fans, the
players and for media atten-
tion. Shanghai also stages
the WGC-Champions Tour-
nament next week before
the Final Series builds to a
crescendo with the Turkish
Open featuring world num-
ber one Tiger Woods and
fnally the DP World Tour
Championship in Dubai in
the middle of November.
This is another idea
to keep the players on their
toes, said 1994 and 1999
US Masters champion Ola-
zabal. Its important for
2014 too, especially as that
is a Ryder Cup year.

Los Angeles airport worker pleads
innocent to planting dry bombs
Los AngeLes, 23 Oct
An airport employee
charged in connection with
three dry ice bombs planted
at Los Angeles International
Airport pleaded not guilty
on Tuesday, and his lawyer
called him a good guy
facing harsh treatment in the
case.
Miguel Angel Iniguez,
41, entered his not guilty
plea on charges of possess-
ing a destructive device
near an airplane during a
brief hearing in Los Ange-
les Superior Court, and was
ordered held on $500,000
bond. Handcuffed and
dressed in street clothes, he
spoke only in response to
questions from the judge.
Iniguez was due back
in court on Wednesday,
along with his co-defendant,
28-year-old Dicarlo Ben-
nett, for a hearing at which
defence lawyers for both
men were expected to ask
that their bail be reduced.
Hes a good guy and well
get him out of this, his at-
torney, Gustavo Barcena,
told reporters outside of
court.
Barcena said the case
was a hardship on his client,
who was married with four
children between the ages
of 3 and 16 and who un-
derwent a kidney transplant
operation several years ago.
He said Iniguez, a supervi-
sor for airport contractor
Servisair, had no criminal
record or disciplinary issues
at work. Unfortunately,
with this type of a charge
the minimum penalty is very
harsh, Barcena said. The
minimum penalty for this
type of charge is two years.
No exception, no proba-
tion. Authorities have iden-
tifed Iniguez as a supervisor
of 28-year-old Bennett, a
Servisair baggage handler
who pleaded not guilty on
Thursday to similar charges
and was being held on $1
million bail.
In an incident authori-
ties said had no connection to
terrorism, one of the bombs
detonated on 13 October in
an employee restroom and
the second exploded outside
the international terminal
a day later, causing some
fight disruptions. A third

Okay Ill do it, turn
pro, Ko says. Right now,
right this second. Defnite-

Wilsheres ankle causes
concern for Wenger
London, 23 Oct
Arsene Wenger withdrew
Jack Wilshere from the heat
of battle against Borussia
Dortmund on Tuesday and
said he may have to protect
the midfelder from his own
desire to play. Wilshere was
substituted after an hour of
the 2-1 Champions League
defeat, having appeared to
labour with an ankle injury.
After missing more
than a year of competi-
tive football before
returning last October
from an ankle prob-
lem, Wenger admit-
ted he would moni-
tor the England
midfelders ftness. You
could see he was not com-
pletely himself and thats
why I decided to take him
off, Wenger told reporters.
I think at the moment its
his desire to play, absolute-
ly, but you could see tonight
he was handicapped after
the frst tackle of the game.
He landed awkwardly and
he looked to me that he was
limping a little bit. Ill see
how he responds in the next
two or three days but I will
have to wait for the med-
ical assessment.
