Reporting on Learning Skills The provincial report card provides a record of the learning skills you demonstrated in this course under the following categories: Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, and Self-Regulation . Your performance in each of these skills will be reported separately except in cases where a specific learning skill is one of the expectations of the course. It should be noted that better application of the Learning Skills often corresponds to better academic achievement.

Assessment and Evaluation The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. Information gathered through assessment helps teachers to determine students strengths and weaknesses in their achievement of the curriculum expectations in each course. This information also serves to guide teachers in adapting curriculum and instructional approaches to students needs and in assessing the overall effectiveness of programs and classroom practices. Formative evaluation refers to the gathering of information over time in order to provide an evaluation. Although Formative Assessments are not assigned a formal grade, it is essential that the student completes all work so as to provide evidence of learning, areas that require improvement, and the aptitude required to complete summative work. Summative evaluation occurs towards the end of a period of instruction and is assigned a formal grade. Home/School Communication Your teacher may be contacted by email if available (check with your teacher). The parent will be contacted by the teacher as needed to improve the educational opportunities of the student. Please refer to the student agenda, or school website, for reporting dates and other important event dates at Nile Academy. Students Expectations: 1. Please respect deadlines of major assignments and projects. Deadlines are realistic in working life outside the school setting. Deadlines are set as a reasonable management strategy for teachers so that evaluation of student performance can be completed in a timely fashion. Deadlines also provide a way of bringing closure to one unit of work and moving on to the next. - It is your responsibility to seek assistance from the teacher when you feel unable to complete a task/assignment due to insufficient knowledge or skill. It is not acceptable to advise the teacher of difficulty the day before/on the day a task/assignment is due. - It is NEVER acceptable to submit work late without negotiating alternate deadlines - Failure to complete sufficient work may prevent you from completing the credit. 2. It is your responsibility to obtain information or documents handed out during class time on those days you are absent. 3. If you are absent on the days a major assignment, test, or presentation, you will be required to validate your absence with a doctors note explaining that they realize you missed a major part of your evaluation in the course. 4. If you miss a test due to unforeseen circumstances, you will be able to write a make-up test on the day you return to school if the absence is acknowledged from home/doctor.

5. Plagiarism is a serious academic offense and results in a mark of zero. Plagiarism is the use of another persons work without acknowledgement (ie. Downloading work off the Internet, or copying out of a book). It includes the submission of peer work that is not your own. Cheating on tests, quizzes, and exams is also a form of plagiarism. 6. Every student must bring the following to class each day. - Notebook (3-ringed binder): All student notes must be kept in a 3-ring binder. The notebook must be neat, organized, and up-to-date at all times. All notes must be in ink and dated, and all titles should be underlined - lined paper, pen, pencil, and eraser - text book(s) 7. Punctuality is very important. Being late disrupts the class, and you miss pertinent information. If lateness becomes a problem, your parents/guardian will be notified. 8. Extra Help: Extra help is always available. Please see the teacher to arrange a specific time which is convenient for both the teacher and the student. Do not let problems build up: see the teacher immediately!! Most problems can be resolved in 10 minutes or less.

I hope you'll enjoy this course!
