DEVELOPMENTAL TESTS
Battelle Developmental Inventory: (BDI)
1984 Newborg J, Stock J.R.,Wnek, L. A standardised developmental battery for children birth to 8 years and divided into five domains: adaptive, personal-social, motor, communication, and cognitive. The purpose is to assess children with handicapping conditions, typically developing children and to plan and track individual educational programs. Battelle Developmental Inventory test toys and supplementary materials computer scoring, IBM/Apple Mac test forms, screening forms video about the test available for loan
This video tape explains the 15 behaviour ratings used in the CARS. Numerous case studies show how to determine and score ratings from observing the childs behaviour. Comes with a 30 page study guide.
Wide Range Assessment of Memory and Learning: (WRAML) 1990 Wayne Adams PhD and David Sheslow PhD
This assessment is a carefully standardised psychometric instrument which allows the user to evaluate a childs ability to actively learn and memorise a variety of information. Quantitative results with quantitative observations contribute to a more comprehensive evaluation of cognitive abilities than has previously been possible. The test is normed for ages 5-17 and takes about 45 mins - a short memory screen (15 mins) can be given to assess memory function.

sensorimotor skills related to the childs handling of the writing tool and paper. Classroom observations focusing on the childs psycho-social skills, attending abilities and behaviour in the school setting are also targeted. The ETCH can be administered in 15 to 25 minutes and scored in 10 to 20 minutes with established scoring procedures and criteria for legibility. Interrator reliability has also been established. ETCH scoring competence is attained through tutorials and competency quizzes in the Examiners Manual. Both the ETCH-Manuscript and the ETCH Cursive are in the test kit. Testing materials include wall charts for far-point copying, task sheets for near-point copying, a peephole score card for isolating letters and words and quick reference sheets highlighting administration and scoring procedures. Also included are reproducible ETCH response booklets and score sheets and a spiral bound Examiners Manual.
The PEDI is a new assessment which has been specifically designed to assess key functional abilities in children with medical or developmental delays. It is well suited to children with physical disabilities, as it provides a caregiver assistance scale to determine level of independence in the childs typical daily activities. It includes a parent interview. The scale has excellent psychometric properties, except that norms are based on a sample from the northeast US only. It is unlikely that geographic region would have much impact on the type of developmental abilities assessed by the PEDI.

Bonny and Perks Difficulty with Handwriting: ETCH - Evaluation Tool of Childrens Handwriting
Problems Amundson (OT) Alaska 1995 The ETCH is designed to evaluate the manuscript and cursive handwriting skills of children in grades one to six who are experiencing difficulty with written communication. The primary focus is to assess a childs legibility and speed in writing tasks which are similar to those required in the classroom. ETCH tasks include writing the alphabet and numerals from memory, near-point copying, far-point copying, dictation and sentence composition. Each writing task is scored individually and then compiled with the others for a total score. Scores include speed measured in letters per minute and percentages of numeral, letter and word legibility. The ETCH also examines legibility components, such as letter formation, spacing, size and alignment, as well as a variety of 3

The MVPT-R is a test of visual perception which avoids any motor involvement. Unlike most of the tests and scales purported to measure visual perception (receptive process) that require complicated graphic responses (expressive process) such as drawing circles, squares, straight lines etc, the MVPT-R measures visual perception without the use of graphic responses. The test is designed for screening, diagnostic and research purposes where a quick measure of overall visual perceptual processing ability is required. The revision of the 1972 edition includes updated norms with an increased upper age. Some more difficult items have been added to accommodate those working with adult populations and older children. Test includes 25 test sheets. Test sheets
PERCEPTION TESTS
Developmental Test of Visual Perception: Frostig:
(2nd ed.) 1993/4 Donald D.Hammill, Nils A Pearson, and Judith K Voress
The DTVP-2 is the 1993 revision of Marianne Frostigs popular Developmental Test of Visual Perception (DTVP). The original version of the test was administered to more than six million children. The new edition includes numerous improvements. Is suitable for children aged 4-10. Measures both visual perception and visual-motor integration skills. Has eight subtests. Is based on updated theories of visual perceptual development. Can be administered to individuals in 35 minutes. It yields scores for BOTH pure visual perception (no motor response) and for visual-motor integration ability.

The Sensorimotor Motor Performance Analysis: 1989, Eileen W. Richter and Patricia C. Montgomery. Ages 5adult Test forms and profiles, package of 25 (sold separately). This criterion-referenced assessments is designed to provide a qualitative record of individual performance on gross and fine motor tasks. It is designed for ambulatory/mobile developmentally disabled clients aged five to adult. The SPA consists of four gross motor tasks and three fine motor tasks that are broken down by performance components. The score sheet provides a breakdown of each task into the performance components necessary to complete the task, enabling the therapist to grade the qualitative aspects of a response. This system allows for consistent, objective recording of the quality of the clients performance to be used for comparison following treatment. Although developed specifically for cognitively handicapped school aged children, the SPA has been found useful for clients in other age groups and with a variety of sensorimotor problems including dysfunction in postural control and movement patterns. The manual contains chapters describing the use and interpretation of the SPA assessment; case examples of treatment plans based on the SPA; criteria for scoring; and extensive background reference listings.
A functional approach to working with young children: T.W Linder, K.Dickson, S Hall, P Hudson. An assessment and intervention process involving the student in structured and unstructured play situations to provide opportunity for developmental observations. Age range: 6 months - 6 years for students functioning developmentally. Provides structured guidelines for developmental observations of social-emotional, cognitive, language, communication and sensory motor domains. Assessment is divided into phases where observations are conducted in the following settings: unstructured and structured play with student and team member; play with peers to observe student-student interaction; play with parent in unstructured and structured play; observation of separation/reunion with student and parent; unstructured and structured motor play. Standardised, norm-based assessment administered with parent(s), facilitating adult (team member) and another student or students in a natural setting. Videotaping of assessment phase is encouraged.
Sensory Integration Inventory For Individuals with Developmental Disabilities: Users Guide and Forms.
Judith E Reisman and Bonnie Hanschu Test forms, package of 20 (sold separately). This preliminary assessment is designed for occupational therapy personnel who serve people with severe and profound mental retardation. It is designed to screen for clients who might benefit from a sensory integration treatment approach. The inventory is divided into four sections associated with sensory integrative processing; tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, and general reactions. Each item is stated as an observable behaviour. The guide gives a rationale for the inclusion of each item in the inventory as an indicator of sensory integrative dysfunction. It also provides an alternative, sensory explanation for behaviours that are often presumed to be primarily psychosocial in origin. The users guide has also been recommended as a learning aid for occupational therapy students because it provides down-to-earth examples that help explain many sensory integration concepts.

ADHD in the Schools: Assessment and Intervention Strategies: George J DuPaul and Gary Stoner 1994.
Addressing school-related problems associated with ADHD such as academic underachievement, non-compliance with classroom rules, and problematic peer relationships, this book is specifically designed to meet the needs of school psychologists, guidance counsellors, administrators, and both regular and special education teachers. Creating a standard for working with ADHD in school, the authors of this landmark volume emphasise the need for a team effort among parents, community-based professionals, and educators. Providing practical information that is based on empirical findings, chapters focus on how to identify students who might have ADHD, and the relationship between ADHD and learning disabilities. The book covers how to develop and implement classroom-based programs, and describes communication strategies for working with children suffering from ADHD when stimulant medications are employed. It is also an appropriate text for advanced courses addressing childhood behaviour disorders and serves as a reference for graduate students receiving training in a variety of schoolbased professions.

Hyperactive Children Grown Up: (Second Edition) ADHD in children, adolescents and adults: Gabrielle
Weiss and Lily Trokenberg Hechtman, 1993. Long considered a standard in the field, the first edition of Hyperactive Children Grown Up explores what happens to hyperactive children when they grow to adulthood. Based on the renowned McGill prospective studies - research that now spans more than 30 years - the volume reports findings on the etiology, treatment and outcome of attention deficits and hyperactivity at all stages of development. This second edition includes entirely new chapters that describe new developments in ADHD, current psychological treatments, contemporary perspectives on the use of medications, and assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of ADHD adults. Its empirical and methodical rigour will be valued by researchers, and its clinical observations provide clinicians with richer appreciation of treatment practices for the ADHD child, adolescent and adult.
This is the book for parents and professionals who need resources for the hyperactive or maybe hyperactive child. In a clear and concise fashion. It presents 30 principles to guide parents, teachers, and clinicians in identifying and working with hyperactive children and offers a careful, systematic approach to evaluation and treatment, helping the reader avoid pitfalls that can be expensive, time-consuming, and disappointing. Full of helpful case examples, this book discusses diagnosis, therapy, medication, educational strategies, homework and the parents role in language that is easy to understand. Paperbound.

An activity book for young people with ADHD it is designed as the companion to the extraordinarily popular Putting on the Brakes: Young Peoples Guide to Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and allows children to put understanding of ADHD into action. Using pictures, puzzles, mazes and more the authors have found dozens of ways to spark and hold the interest of young readers with ADHD. Although the unique set of problems experienced by these youngsters is taken into account, it is really their potential that has inspired this book. The goal is to assist in the learning of a range of skills, including problem solving, organising and setting priorities, planning and maintaining control - all of those hard-to-teach skills that make everyday life just a little more manageable.
Putting on the Brakes: Young Peoples Guide to Understanding ADHD: Patricia O. Quinn, MD and Judith M
This book is an honest, easy-to-understand overview of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for kids. The authors describe the symptoms and physiology of ADHD; they explore what it feels like to have the disorder and how other people respond to it. The book points out family/community support, medication, and specific, personal ways to better organise oneself in order to function effectively - at home, at school and with friends.

care, play and school activities. Its widely believed that grasp and release are the primary elements of fine motor skills, as indicated in popular literature. Recent studies show that the development of hand skills encompasses more than the refinement of grasp and release. Development of Hand Skills in the Child goes beyond the traditional theory for developing fine motor skills and offers a fresh perspective on refining the complex processes of manipulation and handling of objects and tools. This text not only explains the therapeutic approaches and strategies that enhance the development of hand skills and the childs ability to play, manipulate and skilfully use tools, it also focuses on the complexity of hand skill development and examines occupational therapy approaches for improving these skills. Includes chapters on handwriting evaluation, developing scissor skills, eye-hand coordination and neurodevelopment treatment. Contents also include: Central nervous system control over precision movements of the hand Eye-hand coordination In-hand manipulation skills Therapeutic fine-motor activities for preschoolers Neurodevelopmental treatment for the young child with cerebral palsy Upper extremity casting: adjunct treatment for the child with cerebral palsy

and Mary Jo Gilpin Decker, BS, OTR/L. The book looks at developing fine motor skills at school and home and helping your clients improve small-muscle coordination skills using this hands-on program. Youll receive reproducible materials including: 88 illustrated worksheets; alphabet worksheets; screening methods; weekly parent letters; and instructor aids. It is divided into three programs: Fine motor 101 is a 10 week program for first semester kindergarten students at a pre-writing level. Activities include whole body sensory motor warm-ups, colouring, pasting, cutting, tracing and sculpting with clay. Teach your second semester kindergarten students to print the alphabet in fine motor 102. Sensory motor warm ups focus on fine motor control. Fine motor 103 is a 13 week program for first semester first graders. Sensory motor activities emphasise relation and posture prior to pencil/paper activities. Students will concentrate on letter formation, directionality, spacing, left-toright orientation and copying from horizontal and vertical planes.

What is theTalking Pen? It is an electronic pen with a small beam of infra-red light in its tip. When the pen is on a light coloured surface, a fiber-optic sensor picks up the reflected light, triggering a buzzer to let the user know hes on the right track. Because the user gets immediate feedback, the pen is useful for developing a wide range of sensory-motor tasks - even without direct supervision.

confidence and competence in children with LD. 8-12 years. Multisensory program,Teachers manual, musical story book, 3 audio cassettes. The Concentration Cockpit: Explaining Attention Deficits to Children The Concentration Cockpit is a brightly printed, laminated poster that helps teach children with attention deficits to gain insight into their problems and monitor their progress in grappling with these problems. The poster consists of a series of diagrams of meters with missing pointers. As the function of each meter is reviewed, the child assesses his own ability to control 14 areas of behaviour, drawing the missing pointer at the appropriate level. An Examiners Guide explains how to administer The Concentration Cockpit, and the new Explanatory Test and Record Form provide the complete script as well as space for recording the students responses in one convenient booklet. Educators and health-care professionals will find The Concentration Cockpit useful in the management of children with attention deficits. It helps children gain insight into their problems and helps the examiner clarify the various traits associated with attention deficits for parents, teachers and clinicians.
This 11 x 17 chart lists eight neurodevelopmental functions (selective attention and intention, memory, simultaneous/ sequential arrangement, language, higher-order cognition, neuromotor function, and social cognition) and their performance elements (core elements, organisational/strategic elements, fluency/volume, control elements, meta-awareness elements, major transfunctional elements, and stylistic elements). On its reverse side is a chart, Developmental Expectations and Demands over Time: Some Evolving SchoolRelated Phenomena, which lists expectations and demands from preschool through upper grades.
Dr M. Levine Clinicians, educators and interested parents will find this book a valuable guide for understanding children who are having difficulty learning. Whenever teaching and medical terminology are used, they are defined carefully, making this professional text very readable. Educators will discover how developmental functions affect learning and clinicians will have the opportunity to examine academic skills as they are affected by development. Anyone involved in assessing children and in managing their problems will find the wealth of information invaluable. A young students book about learning abilities and learning disorders. The book was written to help children in the elementary grades understand how they learn, how weaknesses make learning difficult, and how their strengths can be used to improve their learning skills. As the title indicates, minds vary, no-one is perfect - and everyone needs to learn to appreciate all kinds of minds. This book is mainly a fictitious account of five appealing and realistic children. Each of them has one or more learning disorders: attention deficit, a reading disorder, memory problems, a language disorder, social skills problems or motor skills problems.Young readers will easily identify with the experiences of the characters as they appear in a variety of situations: humorous, serious, suspenseful, and sometimes sad. Overall, the books tone is distinctly upbeat. During the first seven chapters fictional anecdotes, each of the main characters comes to understand his or her minds strengths and weaknesses. All the children learn about getting help from others, helping themselves, and building on their strengths. The eighth and final chapter, which is non-fiction, reviews important concepts and facts that appear in the preceding chapters. It also offers young readers suggestions for overcoming the effects of learning disorders. To facilitate the use of this book, two kinds of materials are available: cassette tapes of the text read verbatim by the author, and a booklet of guidelines to assist adults in helping children understand the personal relevance of All Kinds of Minds. - Audiotape - Book

manual, 1993 PAL Most occupational therapy professionals working in the schools agree that mastering handwriting is one of the greatest challenges facing children with learning impairments and/or mild motor impairments.
Getting a Grip on Handwriting: Offers you the knowledge needed to assess the essential components for handwriting and to assist the classroom teacher in devising appropriate intervention strategies.
The 30-minute video includes three sections: Information related to hand anatomy and function Guidelines for determining the motor readiness to learn to print Case vignettes of three children who have encountered some problems learning to print or write in cursive This self-guided video and manual is ideal for use as an inservice education tool where therapists show the video and discuss how their areas of expertise can contribute to the assessment and intervention for students handwriting problems. 25 page video guide, 30 minutes video. Barbara Hypes, RPT, 57 mins. This videotape outlines the essential components of normal gait, basic understanding of weight shifting and the differences between adult gait and early ambulation. Included in the discussion are the determinants of gait and a demonstration of pelvic/femoral and pelvic/spinal control required for normal walking. Treatment sessions on two children with cerebral palsy are provided with examples of treatment techniques and voice over instruction to augment what the viewer is observing.
approaches for preparing your clients therapy goals. 12 page viewers guide.
Barbara Hypes, RPT, 57 mins. A follow up to Part 1, this tape emphasises working toward independent gait in patients that have severe developmental delays. The therapist encourages the patient to function outside of fixed patterns. Therapy sessions with two children in cotreatment with an occupational therapist highlight this instructional tape.
W. Michael Magrun Use this therapist-directed approach to control the amount and type of sensory input providing a foundation for organised motor control for your clients, 5 years and older. Chapters include: theoretical synopsis; the influence of proprioception on sensory-motor function and more. 42 page manual, soft bound, 30 min full colour VHS video tape.
Child with Spasticity: Regi Boehme 1991. (Video of part of a workshop) This assessment and treatment session demonstrates the principles of neurodevelopmental treatment. By building on what the child has developed in his head and neck, the therapist helps him extend that control to his trunk and hips. The patient is a 14 month old with spastic quadriplegia. The therapy session includes: facilitation of head and trunk control treatment to increase spinal, pelvic and hip mobility changes in sitting balance and upper extremity control working with parents as active participants in the therapeutic process teaching parents to modify care for carry-over.
NORMAL
DEVELOPMENT VIDEOS
Extremity Awareness and Control: Regi Boehme 1993, (38 mins video - part of a workshop 2) This assessment and treatment was part of a handling intensive workshop. The session focuses on gaining lower extremity activity for the quadruped. This two year old is able to achieve dramatic functional changes as he gains awareness in his lower body. Within the NDT framework, he receives, integrates and functionally uses new movement patterns. The therapy session includes: use of myofascial release to gain hip alignment and mobility use of specific sensory motor information to stimulate proprioceptive and kinaesthetic awareness in the trunk and lower extremities facilitation of components of lower extremity control supporting the child through the communication of tears.
Normal Child and Adolescent Development: Gernelli Normal Development of Reach and Grasp: Normal Hand Development: Birth to 15 months. 35 mins.
This video, winner of the 1984 Sage Award by the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, presents a comprehensive range of prehension behaviours grouped into self contained developmental sequence clusters which demonstrate how skills at each level lead to those at the next. Major topics include involuntary-reflexive patterns (the arms in supine and prone, the ATNR, grasping, placing and avoiding responses); voluntary movements (approach in supine, prone and sitting; grasp and release; and manipulation skills).
Barbara Hypes PT, 44 minutes Designed as a teaching tool, the tape includes discussion of major problems and pertinent treatment strategies and treatment sessions with two children with different degrees of hypotonia. The tape highlights a variety of treatment activities for each child with voice over instruction explaining the choice of treatment techniques. The tape is a valuable tool for beginning through to advanced therapists as well as being helpful for parents to better understand their child and the need for ongoing therapy.
Sharon Friefeld, BSc (OT), MA OT(C) and Laurie Snider, BSc (OT), MA Use this 30 min. video to review normal development of primitive reflexes and reactions in infants, birth to 15 months. This video reference includes a demonstration of how to elicit reflexes, an explanation of the role of reflexes and the development of movement skills. Examples of reflex stimulation include: rooting reflex moro reflex palmar grasp primary standing reflex primary walking asymmetyrical tonic neck reflex. This video works well as an inservice training tool for paraprofessional and therapist education.

Two programs on one video cassette: 1. Components of visual motor function in a normal young adult: 10 mins. This new video presents the eye movement patterns of a normal young adult following the format of the EDVA-S (Erhardt Developmental Vision Assessment short screening form). It is correlated with the videos Normal Visual Development and the administration of the EDVA which present the six-month developmental level as a significant milestone of maturity when primitive visual reflexes are integrated and voluntary eye movements are essentially as functional as in the adult. 2. A typical visual motor function in persons with developmental disabilities: 25 mins. This new video presents examples of 12 children and adults with cerebral palsy, multiple handicaps and the developmental disabilities evaluated with the EDVA. The eye movement patterns, which show missing components below the mature six month level, are related to their physical, medical and optical diagnoses.
Meet John, Joan and Dustin. They all have sensory defensiveness. They may view touch as an anxiety producing attack, or unexpected contact as danger. Or they may have the opposite reaction of craving pressure on their skin or only feel OK after heavy exertion. They may have many sensory eccentricities like always removing labels from their clothes, over responding to sound, smell or movement. These are typical patterns studied in sensory defensive individuals at all ages and developmental stages. In this video, Patricia Wilbarger an occupational therapist and consultant, aquaints the viewer with the diagnosis sensory defensiveness. Through actual cases she explores the scope of the problem, its impact on the individual and family, the significance of identification of sensory defensiveness, and proposes three intervention approaches. This tape is designed for professional and general audiences.
Toronto Sensory Integration Study Group. This 20 minute videotape makes an invaluable training tool for sensory integration therapy. Use it to train therapists, students, teachers or to educate parents. The program discusses the process of SI and shows characteristics and behaviours of one to five year old children with SI disorders. This complete description also covers the role of therapy in remediating SI dysfunction, including the role of the occupational therapist. It gives an overview of the three basic sensory systems tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive and how these systems interact. Target areas for therapy are also outlined and it demonstrates how controlled sensory input emphasises the three sensory systems and enhances body integration and motor planning. A balance of therapeutic activities provides the sensorimotor foundation for learning.
SENSORY INTEGRATION
An introduction to Sensory Integration: 1991

For children with co-ordination and attention problems
Difficult, Picky, Oversensitive, Clumsy, Unpredictable, Inattentive. Children who have been labeled with words like these may actually be suffering from Sensory Integration Dysfunction - a common, but frequently misdiagnosed condition that can manifest itself in high or low activity levels, problems with motor co-ordination, oversensitivity or undersensitivity to sensations and movements, and other symptoms. Now, in THE OUT-OF-SYNC CHILD (Perigrr: March 1, 1998). Carol Stock Kranowitz, an expert in the field, offers the first look at Sensory Integration
