Dale Sale Graphics Narratives Superhero Sketch Assignment

Born: Astrid Nordsdotter (beautiful daughter of the north) in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada to Norwegian scientist parents. Her parents were killed in a bush plane accident when she was in university at Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway. It has long been suspected their deaths were the result of their environmental activist position against Arctic exploitation. Secret Identity: Kara Isdotter (wild ice daughter). She uses this identity when she must interact with the outside world. Everyone believes she is a reclusive highly successful wildcat gold prospector.

Original occupation: Ph.D. in high Arctic climate research. Origin story: Astrid was tracking a source of radioactive atmospheric contamination she had discovered during her research. It was the end of the Arctic summer but she was determined to find the source. She broke protocol and left camp alone for one more scouting trip even though she knew a storm front was moving into the area. While traversing a glacier following the trail, she plunged into a crevasse. Inside the crevasse she discovered the source of the radiation. A long abandoned Soviet era radioactive navigation light battery. The storm arrived and her team was forced to leave her entombed within the glacier. Instead of dying she slipped into a coma and slowly absorbed a massive dose of alpha particle radiation from the leaking battery. Astrid awoke with the return of spring and was able to dig her way out of the glacier and make her way back to civilization. Discovering her new capabilities along the way. Upon her return, Astrid learns that she has been declared dead and has a crisis of disillusionment with society and turns her back on the world and retreats back to the frozen north and becomes IceAge. Special Powers: IceAges radioactive core functions as an internal heat source and she can withstand the coldest temperatures without discomfort. However, she can never venture far south because she will quickly overheat. She is able to travel as far south as Northern Europe or the northern U.S. in the winter and often raises eyebrows wearing shorts and a tee shirt when it is far below freezing. The heavy radioactive decay elements hardened her bones and gave her enormous strength. Because the bulk of her energy comes from within herself, she does not require food, however she loves pizza. Alpha particles have low penetration so she is not a radiation hazard to others and the radioactive elements are recycled within her body. IceAge has essentially become a nuclear battery and can hold her breath indefinitely and dive to the deepest ocean depths because of her super dense body structure and metabolism powered by her radioactive core. This allows her to collect gold from deep ocean deposits and support her operations. Ice Age is especially strong and tough. Normal firearms cannot penetrate her skin, however she is vulnerable to high explosives and depleted uranium projectiles. She is able to travel at very high speeds over long distances. Weaponry: Her primary weapons are a Nordic throwing axe and a heavy ice hammer/climbing axe. Favored method of travel: Skis or iceboat.

Motivations, Good or Evil: IceAges primary focus is the protection of her beloved Arctic. She battles anyone who would despoil the North, which she views as her rightful domain. She tolerates scientific research and expeditions and occasionally will grudgingly help them if they are in distress. The suspicious deaths of her parents still linger in her psyche. IceAge despises the push into the Artic for oil, mineral wealth, or tourist adventure and sometimes sabotages these operations. Some governments in the Arctic Region Council view her actions as criminal vigilantism and have a standing warrant and reward for her capture. The Native Peoples call her Anerwerk Ningatok Angry Angel. The Inuit shaman Ataninnuaq often tries to counsel her in matters of conscience. Base of Operations: IceAge maintains a secret base of operation on an ice-covered island in the high Canadian Arctic. She has resisted all efforts to co-opt her into government or Superhero groups preferring solitude. Sidekick: IceAge is sometimes joined by a wolf she has named Trofast, Faithful. She rescued Trofast when he was an orphaned cub whose mother had been killed by an oil company survey crew. The crew barely escaped with their lives. This is how she came by the secondary Inuit name Pialayok Akkiyomwok, Swift Revenge.
