ROAD SAFETY AUDIT REPORT OF FINAL DESIGN DRAFT

For: PDO (ONE) By: RSST Controller Coast - Sasa Kocic File Ref: RSA/N/003/2011 Date of review: 21.02.2011 Designer: Galfar Project name: Qarn Alam Airport-MPS roundabout construction project PDO Department: ONE Contract No: Location: Qarn Alam Location GPS data: 21 19.638'N; 57 4.915'E ANNEXES: 1. Revised drawing by RSST with amendments

1. Location description and designs provided

The junctions design reviewed is the future roundabout in Qarn Alam for the Qarn Alam Airport, MPS and Saih Rawl. The review is done on request from ONE in order to mitigate any possible road safety issues that may arise, in the design stage, in order to avoid future hazards. Provided designs are showing: 1. The future layout of the junction as a fully developed roundabout with 100m diameter. 2. The design speed is set to 80km/h, 3. The minor approaches are designed with physical traffic islands and road widening at the entrances 4. All of the approach roads are asphalted 5. The location of the junction is moved due to the constraints in regards to existing pipelines,

2. Road safety audit findings

a. Road and roundabout layout The road layout provides adequate facilities for the traffic demands on the location, and also serves as a proper entrance to a urban area as it is located on the beginning of the Qarn Alam Camp area. The entry radii are well adjusted with the circulatory radius and provide a smooth negotiation of the roundabout for all the road users who are following the traffic regulations. b. Speed limit The speed limit is 60km/h on all approaches, while after exiting the roundabout speed limit differs depending on the road conditions. The cat-eye speed breakers-studs are proposed on 14 locations in order to warn the drivers on the approach to the junction, and also to discourage the drivers from using a central reserve for overtaking. c. Traffic islands and channelization island The provided design considers physical traffic islands which are adequate for the location. d. Traffic signs and markings Traffic signs and markings recommendation is presented in the amended drawing. e. Guardrail installations RSST recommends that culverts and service ducts (if the level difference between the ground and the road is more than 0.5m) are protected with guardrails.

3. Recommendations
The additional recommendations by RSST to be incorporated in order to further facilitate safe usage of the junctions and connecting roads, i.e.: Marking additional yellow rumble strips in order to further decrease and warn the drivers about the approach to the roundabout. RSST recommendations and proposed junction design are given in the drawing as Annex to this report.
