Thank you for helping support DayStar Ranch (DSRI) by participating in
fundraising in your community. In 2009-2010 DSRI hopes to raise $15,000 to
maintain and grow our programs. We hope this packet will provide you with
successful fundraising action! Included you’ll find information about DSRI and its
programs, some guidance on maximizing your fundraising, sample letters, an
official donation form and support signs for local businesses. We look forward to
hearing your fundraising success stories and thanks again for helping raise
money for DSRI!

About DSRI
DayStar Ranch, Inc. supports host ranches in Northern California with the
mission of empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to live
healthful lives with the use of horse activities and other horse associated
services.

Our vision is that all the DayStar host ranches throughout Northern California
will contribute to the unity and harmony within the community in which they
service through the promotion of horse associated programs which focuses on
healing, empowering, and strengthening the individual as well as their
relationships with family, friends, and the community-at-large.

What is fundraising?

Some notes on fund raising:

• By soliciting contributions from individuals and organizations we will reduce some of DayStar
Ranch’s operation expenses in providing programs for its target populations.

• DSRI fund raising activities allows each participating member to make a personal appeal for
financial support as well as explain the ranch’s mission.

• Therefore, each fund raising activity is a systematic program that


1. identifies donor sources
2. create opportunities to introduce or reintroduce the mission and goals of DSRI to the
community
3. make special appeal for funding
4. make special appeals for partnerships and leadership that can assist in indirectly
reducing the cost of operating expenses
5. create additional lines of communication of the financial and operational progress of
DSRI

Why would anyone want to give DSRI?

• Some individuals shy away from participating fund raising because they believe that they are
asking for funds in which they can not provide any physical product in return, while others see
how the many ways in which a community benefits from an individual who is receiving
therapeutic services or experiential training from a service program.
• As a fundraiser it is important for you to convey the dynamic operations of DSRI:
o Feeding and care of horses
o Maintenance of host sites
o Providing financial aid for those participants who desire to participate in a program but
can not afford the cost
 For participants who are engaging in scholarship sponsorships, it is important
that you express how you are looking forward to benefiting from the program
o Administrative and operational cost
• Because the world is filled with those who do want to support a good cause, it is important for you
to keep in mind that a donation will help the horses and the participants of the program
• In addition, keep in mind that donations benefit the donor as well
1. DSRI is a 501(c) (3) charitable organization, therefore, donations made to DSRI
are tax deductible (many individuals and business like to benefit from these tax
advantages)
2. Many donors (business, causes and influential families) seek out charitable
organizations to improve their public image, recognition and marketability
3. Because DSRI holds its core beliefs in community economic development,
donations to DSRI will serve the advancement and sustainability of the communities
served
4. Individuals who would be interested in participating in DSRI programs however, due
to commitments, they are unable to do so also make great financial donors
What are the most successful fundraising sources?

For DSRI to be successful in its fund raising efforts, we need to be committed and
patient with this process. This process will require us to contact prospective donors several
times before making a donation. Included in this packet is a schedule of fundraising
activities that will assist each participant in satisfying the requirement of constant
communication.

Below is a list of possible fund sources:


• Family members, friends, neighbors, employers, church leaders, etc.
• Current and/or past employers
• Current and/or past employers of parents, grandparents, and close relatives
• Current and/or past employers of you local religious leaders (Pastor, Bishop, etc.)
• Customers/clients/associates of you parents’ work
• Fellow members of social organizations (Scouting, 4H Clubs, Avon, church, etc.
• Local civic organizations (Rotary Club, Lion’s Club, Elk’s Lodge, American Legion, etc.)
• Specialized scholarships (see your University’s Financial Aid office)
• Commercial Non-Profit organizations (Credit Unions, Hospitals, etc.- Inquire at you
local
• Chamber of Commerce/United Way for a list of Non-Profit Organizations in your area)
• Friends of immediate and extended family
• Local businesses
• Neighbors
• Relatives

Are there any other fund raising opportunities?

Yes. It is understandable that some participants in our fund raising event are uncomfortable
in asking for donations directly; and likewise, in fact, there are many people who can not
contribute financial support but are willing to offer their, time, talent, skills, and resource as
a kind donation . Below we have listed other fund raising opportunities that DSRI is
committed to being into fruition:

• Annie B’s Community Fund Drive


• Community yard sale (the proceeds from the purchase tables or stations purchased
to showcase items go directly to DSRI)
• BBQ (local business provide food to be cooked and the proceeds from items sold go
directly to DSRI)
• Benefit concerts
• Auctions and raffles

Because it is hard to predict how much a donor will provide financially or creatively, it is
important to communicate the needs of DSRI with all the individuals and organizations listed
on the donor sheet. Keep in mind that people give to people and not causes; therefore it is
important to remain in communication with your contacts: consider doing follow-up calls,
checking-in calls (find out what their needs are), and common ground calls (for the purpose
of deepening the relationship).

Annie B's Community Drive Rules

1. I understand that North Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) will accept donations on behalf of
our organization starting August 1 and 100% of these donations will be distributed to our
organization within 30 days of the close of the drive on September 30. As with all funds, NVCF
will keep 2% of gross revenues for administrative expenses, to be paid exclusively from
matching grant funds. No NVCF fees will be deducted from designated donations.
2. Checks will be made out to “Annie B's” and the name of our organization and sent from the
donor directly to:

3. I understand that receipts will be issued only by North Valley Community Foundation. NVCF will
send a receipt with an acknowledgment letter to each donor. You will be provided with the
donor's name and address and are encouraged to also send a thank you. The amount of each
donation will be provided once the drive is concluded.
4. I understand that funds directed to this effort are to be contributions from donations only.
o No funds allowed from special events or fundraisers.
o No goods or services will be provided in exchange for donations.
o No fees for membership, drawings, dinners, or other activities are allowed.
o No funds in fulfillment of prior pledges.
5. Donations of cash are discouraged and will be accepted only with prior arrangements. Call
NVCF for details.
6. Donations of stock (securities) can be accepted. Call NVCF for details.
7. Donations received before the drive begins or after the deadline closes will be passed through
to the participating organization, but will not count towards matching grants.
8. I agree to support the marketing efforts of the Annie B's Community Drive and will participate in
these marketing efforts to the degree possible, including participation of a representative of our
organization in the culminating event at Chico City Plaza on October 17.
9. The marketing activities of our organization will be consistent with the goals and efforts of the
Annie B's Community Drive and will include the Annie B's logo in printed material, on-line
information, or other media.
10. NVCF has permission to use the name of our organization in marketing and promotional
material as a participant in the Annie B's Community Drive.
11. I understand that grant funds from NVCF will be distributed to each participating organization
proportionate to the total amount raised by the Annie B's Community Drive. Grants will be
given as a match up to the first $25,000 raised by any one participating organization.
12. I verify that these funds will not be used to promote activities that are primarily religious or
political in nature.
13. I understand that all funds received by North Valley Community Foundation are subject to the
variance power* of the NVCF board of directors.

*The Board of Directors shall have the power to modify or eliminate any restriction, condition,
limitation or trust imposed with respect to any funds or property the title to which has become
vested in this corporation if, in the sole judgment of the Board of Directors, such restriction,
condition, limitation or trust becomes unnecessary, incapable of fulfillment or inconsistent with the
charitable needs of the community or area served.

Deadline for application is August 1 to be included in Annie B's marketing materials.


Nine Steps to Fund Raising Success
To ensure your fund raising success, be sure to:

1. Make a plan. Determine how much money you want to raise for DSRI. Our goal for 2009-2010 is
to raise $15,000. Develop an action plan for your team detailing who is going to do what, and when.
If you need help to make an individual plan, please do not hesitate to contact Ajen Busher
415.722.8778.

2. Determine your objectives. Agree within your team what you aim to achieve through your
fundraising. Think beyond just raising money and question how you might spread the word and
educate other people about DSRI’s mission and the work we do in Northern California. Please use the
paragraph below whenever possible to describe your work as a DayStar Ranch Member.

3. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know! Recruit your family, friends and coworkers to
support your fundraising efforts. They can help spread the word through their own networks.

4. Work with your employer. Most companies have a specific budget for community support;
therefore, don’t just ask your colleagues, ask your company too!

5. Work with your civic group or fraternal organization. Many of these organizations would be
happy to support you financially in raising money for a community oriented program.

6. Go public! Send out a mass mailing (see the sample sponsor letter).

7. Always say “Thank You”. Don’t forget to thank all of your donors for their help and support. A
great way to do this is to thank them with a letter telling of your fundraising success and how their
contribution has made a difference.

8. How can DSRI help? We will be delighted to put the donor’s name on our website with their
permission. In addition to this recognition, donors will be able to keep up with our fund raising
activities and achievements on our website. Your thanks and our recognition of their contribution will
keep them interested in DSRI.

donation to our organization via the North Valley Community Foundation Annie B’s Fund
Drive.

“The North Valley Community Foundation has launched the largest community-wide grant
program in the region- Annie B’s Community Drive- distributing $2 million in the past two
years.

“All nonprofit organizations and charitable causes in Butte, Glenn, Tehama and Colusa
counties are eligible to participate in a two month fundraising drive. North Valley
Community Foundation will give a percentage grant for monies raised.

($.67/day)! Our Partners will provide the consistent support needed to operate the ranch.
Pledges are critical to help us provide training workshops for current and prospective equine

each month or a gift of $300 for the entire year. We will post our Community Host Ranch
Partners’ names on our event splash board at future expo events, on our website, and in our
yearly financial statements. We need at least 50 Community Host Ranch Partners per year
to make our programs and services possible to our host ranch and the communities that
they serve.
