Alaa Bazuhayr PROFESSOR Walden ENGL 1102-017 19 Sep 2013 I have many perceptions about assignment one.

Those perceptions are relating to the second reading that was related to assignment one, the figured world (community) that I chose for this assignment, my actors, their artifacts, the type of the literacy practice that I noticed from my observations, the summary of the rules of my community, my observations it self, and my interview questions and my interviewers. First, I am going to write about my experiences about the second reading, that was assigned for the second week of this course "Theorizing the Space for Literacy Practices." In the beginning of the semester my brain was fresh to read this type of writing because I did not used to read like this form before. I found it really hard to read or understand it. The type of language that the outers (lesley bartlett and dorothy holland) are using was heard for me. I did not even know how to answer to the questions that are related to that reading, I did my best to understand the terms figured words, actors, artifacts, and literacy practices. However, after we got in the class on the another day, we talked about it, I kind of understood what the definitions of those terms, I think that because I was listening to everyones idea about what he or she thinks are the definitions of those terms. After I understood the terms, I started to think about what topic I should write about or what my figured worlds is going to be. I had a hard time for choosing that community, and that because I should choose a topic that I can continuously write about, and a topic that is not boring to write about for me or to even read about for my readers (teacher and classmates). Then, I remembered that I had an experience with the English language training institution before I got to UNCC, I found it really accurate to write about it since I already have an experience with that community. After that I chose my figured worlds (the community that I am interested in). Writing an interview questions was assigned. This part of the assignment was easy for me; however, I have a new experience with it. I have did many interviews before but the format of my interviews questions was short answer questions, for example, yes or no type of answers. So this assignment taught me how write long answers questions format. Before I started with my observations, I went to Mr. Franklin, the director of the ELTI, to get his permission to observe one of the classes that ELTI provides. I told him the purposes of my project, he was happy with the idea and he did not mind for me to do it. I decided to do my observations in three places, regular class room, in the front of the CHHS building while students are taking their break, and at the international coffee hours meeting. While I was observing I was taking a note and recording the times that is related to a group of details that I am observing. From this part of the assignment I learned how to respect the community that I am going to observe by taking a permission of the head of the institution, how to record the time in my note, and how to observe which means what type of data that I am looking for. After I was done with my observations now it is the time for my interview. I decided to do two types of interviews, one of them is about the student experience with english, and the another one is about the teacher experience about being an ELS teacher. form this part of the assignment I gain more self-confident and how I make my interviewers talk more about what I am asking until I reach the point of my questions or until I become satisfied with their answers.

Alaa Bazuhayr PROFESSOR Walden ENGL 1102-017 19 Sep 2013 Finally, writing my assignments one first draft. this part of my work was easy because everything was organized from the beginning and I had times for every pert of this assignment.
