Week 1: Focus on Journeys and Flat Stanley

Lesson: Journeys Unit Introduction Objective: At the end of this lesson students will understand the Flat Stanley story and
project. The students will also have practice using a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast information.

Materials:
1. iPads 2. ELMO 3. World Map

Instructional Directions:
1. Click on link to play the animoto introductory slide show on the journeys unit over projector. http://vimeo.com/38453307 2. Facilitate a whole group discussion on if any students have been on a trip and how, when, where, with who did they go. Make sure to reference clip they just watched and ask if they noticed the paper drawing of a boy that was in all the pictures. Use the white board to make a list of all the different places the students have been and make tally marks for repeated locations. 4. Have students retrieve the iPad that corresponds with their number in the class and have them sign it out on the clip board next to the shelf that houses the iPads. Over the ELMO, screen share your iPad to read Flat Stanley iBook with the class. Have students click on the bookshelf and find the Flat Stanley iBook.

Follow along with the audio of the iBook with the students, stopping at different points to discuss elements of the story, make sure to reference the clip that they saw at the beginning of the lesson and how that was a Flat Stanley on his trip.

5. Once the story is finished, ask students comprehension questions from the story. Include questions about the different places that Flat Stanley had visited and write them on the white board next to the list of where the students of the class have gone. 6. Still using the screen share of your iPad click on the Venn Diagram app to create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the information on the board.

Have students come up and write on your iPad their ideas, make sure to use random selection to call on students (pick popsicle sticks)

7. Now have students work in pairs to create a Venn Diagram on their iPads comparing and contrasting trips that the pair have been on. 8. Have students put iPads back in their spot and have them sign in their iPad. 9. Pass out Flat Stanley project packet to students and discuss that tomorrow in class they will be creating their own Flat Stanley and that tonight their homework is to discuss with their family who they would like to send their Flat Stanley to for an adventure. Make sure the students understand that they will need to bring the last sheet of the packet with the persons name and email address soon, so that their Stanley can go on his trip. 10. Have students put Flat Stanley packets in their go home folder and make sure to update class blog with the Google form below so parents can answer the questions over the blog.
