Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell has been voted as Moorabools new Mayor. East Ward Councillor John Spain was voted in as Deputy Mayor. Outgoing Mayor Pat Toohey did not re-nominate at the Statutory and Annual Appointments Meeting held last Wednesday 30 October, where Mayor Tatchell won the role with a 5-2 majority. Nominated by East Ward Councillor Allan Comrie, Cr Tatchell gained votes from fellow councillors Comrie, David Edwards, Tonia Dudzik and John Spain. West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan was nominated and voted for by Pat Toohey. New Mayor Tatchell told the meeting he was very fortunate to have been given the privilege of the role. For former mayor Pat Toohey, to have come on board and then taken on the role of Mayor with four new councillors, he jumped straight in the drivers seat and the rst few months were very difcult, but he persevered with extreme patience. And to the experienced councillors we came in contact with from day one, with years of experience, without that, I cant imagine how a council could have operated with seven new faces. We are incredibly fortunate to have those experienced councillors on board. Mayor Tatchell also hinted at a vision for more unity in the future. A bit less of I and more of we, he said. Deputy Mayor Spain was voted in with votes from councillors Dudzik, Edwards, and Comrie, with Mayor Tatchell not required to cast a vote on a majority decision. continued page 13

Bet its a great day out!

By Ebonnie Kombani AS the Ballan Cup races closer, there is expected to be record numbers attending, the marquees having already sold out. Ballan Jockey Club newly appointed President Luke Mullane said it was not too late to be part of the excitement with general admission still available at the gate. Held at the Geelong Racecourse this Saturday November 9, Mr Mullane said the Cup was a must on the communitys social calendar and was all about an affordable day out for the family. Its a great opportunity to dress up and see people that you havent seen for 12 months, Mr Mullane said. It is going to be a great day, we are really keen to see new family faces and get the broader community involved. All the kids activities are free; it has to be an affordable day, otherwise whats the point? Thats what country races are all about. There will be plenty of entertainment, music and food, Fashions on the Field featuring a hat of the day, as well as draw card events including the Sportingbet Ballan Cup Cornerstone Stud Rosebowl with $25,000 in prize money. There will be a band in the marquee area as well as a jazz wandering minstrel plus mini golf for the kids, sand sculpting, a clown and face painting. Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington can also be watched at the Cup via the big screen. Mr Mullane said the Geelong Racing Club has been immensely helpful and it was a great setting for the Ballan Cup. We take three to four bus loads a year. All you have to do is register your name at either the Hudsons or Commercial hotels. The Ballan Cup is an important part of the regions identity having run for 151 years. Ballan Cup general admission ticket prices are $20 per adult, pensioners $12 and children under 17 are free.

BALLANs Phyllip Bix has taken out the state award for Excellence in Health and Safety Management, after ve years of keeping people who work and serve in prisons safe. We have a duty of care to everyone - employees, contractors and prisoners, health and safety ofcer for Grampians Region Prisons Mr Bix said. The key to ensuring the highest standards of health and safety were met comes down to communication. Its about breaking down the barriers, getting out and about and to be seen. Mr Bix was chosen for his category out of more than 300 entrants in the Victorian WorkSafe awards, presented in Melbourne recently. He said having grown up with parents who were publicans, ever since childhood he had been around people from all walks of life. Masseur on sex charges

A 52 year old Darley man appeared in Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court last Friday afternoon, charged with ve counts of sexual assault. The accused, Mr Ronald Van Dorp, is a local business owner of The Vitality Centre, a privately owned massage business, and is alleged to have committed rape and indecent assault on two women, one aged 21 and the other 25 years old. Both women attended the Vitality Centre in Darley for a massage with the alleged incidents occurring on Thursday 12 September and Tuesday 29 October 2013. It is alleged the 21 year old woman received a Facebook message from Van Dorp upon arrival at her home after leaving the Centre, with Van Dorp allegedly asking if she enjoyed the massage and to sleep well. The Ballarat Sexual Offences & Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCIT), executed a search warrant at the premises in Darley on Friday 1 November with items seized. Magistrate John Lesser released Van Dorp on strict bail conditions and stated he is not permitted to conduct any business or work in the eld of remedial massage or related therapies. A committal mention will take place in the Ballarat court on January 30 2014. Ballarat SOCIT would like to hear from anyone that may have further information or been in a similar situation to please contact them on 5336 6055.

Ballans Phyllip Bix accepts his award for Excellence in Health and Safety Management in the Grampians Region at a gala event in Melbourne. Photo courtesy Worksafe diverse backgrounds. Proactive in safe working practices for everyone, Mr Bix has introduced healthy meal choices, condoms dispensers for prisoners, smoke free work environments and installed six debrillator machines across the prisons. He has also presented business cases for a personal trainer to attend the local gym and assist staff to improve and maintain their tness and wellbeing. I highly recommend working in our prisons, the conditions are great and they are very safe-we are in the process of doubling the capacity of the prisons so there are plenty of jobs going, Mr Bix said. Hopkins Correctional Centre and Langi Kal Kal Prison are located on the outskirts of Ararat and Trawalla. Prisoners at these locations are required to work in a number of industries. Many of these prisoners have never worked in an industrial environment and are naive to many of the dangers. Both prisons are going through major expansions, which have involved hundreds of extra construction workers on site from many different agencies. Mr Bix was also heavily involved in identifying potential risks during all construction.

Remembering all
By Ebonnie Kombani POPPIES are now selling across Moorabool and community members are encouraged this year to buy a poppy or two, to remember those who have fallen. President of the Bacchus Marsh RSL Irish Kummerlowe said buying a poppy was not just about remembering those who had fallen in World War I but to remember all who have lost their life due to any war. The poppy is an international symbol to remember those who have fallen in war- even recent wars like Afghanistan, Mr Kummerlowe said. Every year we always have a huge community support and we have so many good volunteers. Mr Kummerlowe said it was important to note that it is not just ex service men and women who volunteer - but community members as a whole. It is great to see volunteers who may not have had any direct ties to the military give the time to support the appeal, he said. The purpose behind the appeal is to raise money for families, returned service men and women as well as legacy widows. Next year will mark 100 years since the First World War where it is estimated more than 60 million people were killed. RSL appeals manager Peter Smith said it is important to support the poppy appeal not just as a sign of respect but to assist the wave of young veterans who are nding themselves, and their families, in need of support. Not only does wearing a poppy show respect for our countrys fallen heroes, it helps raise vital funds for the General Appeals Patriotic Fund, Mr Smith said. You can purchase a poppy or a number of other Remembrance memorabilia to help support the families of those who have lost loved ones to war. Volunteers will be selling the poppies until this Saturday from 10am4pm outside the Bacchus Marsh Village Shopping Centre, Westpac bank, the Darley IGA or Foodworks. To buy a poppy in Ballan you can nd volunteers inside the Ballan IGA between 8am-6pm. The Bacchus Marsh Remembrance Day Service

Station issues increase with growth

By Eleanor Tabone (2nd year Swinburne Uni/ Work Exp) With constant growth within Bacchus Marsh, more people are moving into what was once known as a country town. This growth is seeing more people take advantage of public transport, which in the near future may see the local train station struggle with parking and safety issues. The extended car park is full by the time the 9.10am service to Melbourne arrives, making nding a car space increasingly difcult. This results in commuters having to park in unofcial parking areas. Adrian Darwent, Communications Manager of Public Transport Victoria (PTV), said there is no immediate plan to extend the car park at Bacchus Marsh Station. PTV will continue to monitor patronage at the station and use of the car park, he said. However, areas are poorly lit which could become another issue for commuters,

especially young women walking to their vehicles at night. Mr Darwent said as there has been no security inci-

dents at Bacchus Marsh involving passengers reported in the past 12 months, no extra lighting will be forthcoming in the near future. Police Inspector Brendon McCrory agreed by saying there have been no reports of misconduct at the train station. Bacchus Marsh train station does not rate highly on our crime gures, he said. Despite Protective Service Ofcers (PSOs) beginning on 20th of February 2012, and Bacchus Marsh yet to receive one, Insp. McCrory said there are no plans for

Bacchus Marsh to be assigned one. V/line would have to make an approach to government to get PSOs. Has Bacchus Marsh got the infrastructure to hold PSOs? No, Insp. McCrory said. I would much rather concentrate on high-risk areas, but if it does pop its head up I would get an audit done. It seems V/Line public transport users will remain in the dark, unless a serious crime surfaces for action to be taken.

Stink ceases
Australias biggest domestic wool processor business, and the cause of a horrid smell in and around Long Forest, has ceased spreading the composted wool scour material. Moorabool Shire council gave the Laverton based owners of Victorian Wool Processors (VWP) a 22 October deadline to remove the material from the former farm. It has been conrmed by an onsite inspection by Councils Environmental Health Ofcers that the spreading of the composted material has ceased. Council has received no further complaints about the odour since the prohibition notice was issued, CEO Rob Croxford said. Neighbours of the property have previously been complaining to council about a strong heavy odour similar to rotting meat. A seven year old girl even wrote a letter to Council and her corporate neighbours, begging for the stench to be stopped and describing the property as the stinky farm. To next door, Can you please stop spreading that smell on the ground. We cant play outside because it is so stinky. It makes us feel sick. Thank you. From Alexis. Council conrmed the company requested an extension of time to remove the material, which Council has agreed to; the new date for removal is 22 February 2014.

Ability to get outdoors

By Ebonnie Kombani LAUGHTER and more laughter continued to echo in and around Blackwood Recreation Reserve and Lerderderg River as kids normally in traditional wheelchairs were taken cross-country. Blackwood Special School Outdoor Education Centre is making good use of two TrailRiders - all terrain access wheelchairs, taking kids from special schools on outdoor adventures. There were shrieks of laughter, the kids were yelling more, more! centre manager Tony Bellette said. They loved it, they didnt just want to cross the river, they wanted us to walk them up it! To see the beaming smiles as we moved through the bush - the kids just wouldnt have had that opportunity normally. Its a totally different experience. Mr Bellette said to use the TrailRiders you have a person with immobility in the middle and two sherpas (people) moving the rider along. The sherpa at the front controls the direction and the one at the back the

speed and brakes, he said. This is the second time we have used them so we are ready to go further out into the bush. We are quite excited about giving the kids the full hiking experience and will pack a tent next time. Blackwood Special School Outdoor Education Centre is the only staffed special school camp in Australia. It services 26 special schools and has a number of outdoor activities including

archery, a ropes course, a liberty swing, yabbying and orienteering. It specialises in making physical activities accessible to all abilities. The TrailRiders are now available for loan from either Moorabool Shire Council or Hepburn Shire Council (one at each council). Anyone can hire the chairs, which are designed for the great outdoors, and can be used to allow both adults

and children to experience bushwalking. The TrailRiders can be booked for up to seven days through the Lerderderg Library in Bacchus Marsh on 5366 7100 or the Daylesford Regional Visitor Information Centre on 5321 6100. For more information visit the TrailRider Tales blogspot at trailridertales.blogspot.com.au or the councils website which includes links to youTube on how to use the TrailRider.

Designs using water colours

Kids just love an excuse to get the crayons and colouring pencils out, and during Water Week there were prizes to be won. Two Moorabool primary school students have been named winners in Western Waters poster competition to celebrate Water Week. Portia from Bacchus Marsh Grammar won the Preps category and Riley from Darley Preschool was runner-up in the Preps category. Western Waters General Manager, Customer and Community Relations, Peter Donlon congratulated all the schools that took part in the competition. The standard of entries this year was very high and its great to see our primary students learning about the importance of water. Western Waters regional winners in each category received an iPod Touch, while the runners-up received vouchers.

POOL SAFETY: KNOw YOUR OBLIgAtIONS

Moorabool Shire Council is reminding property owners that every private swimming pool or spa capable of containing a depth of water exceeding 300mm requires a building permit prior to its installation. The building permit will specify that a childproof safety fence and gate must be built and approved before the swimming pool or spa can be used. The importance of adequate and compliant fencing around home pools and spas cannot be underestimated. Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for children under 5 years of age in Victoria. Pool fencing significantly reduces the risk of drowning with research showing that the risk of drowning in a fenced pool is about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool. Our children need to be protected from such accidental drowning. Safety Fence Tips Maintain gates and fences regularly to ensure they comply with the Building Regulations. Fit correct safety measures to gates, doors and windows. Make sure no tree branches, pool pumps or pot plants etc are near the safety fence and be sure that anything able to be climbed is not placed in a position where children could climb to gain access to the pool or spa. A safety fence is required if you have an inflatable pool filled with water which is deeper than 300mm. Position any chairs, boxes, pool pumps etc so that they cannot be used to climb the fence to access the pool or spa. Pool and Spa Regulations It is law that swimming pools or spas on private residential properties in Victoria are provided with safety fences to restrict access to the pool or spa. Swimming pools that require safety fences: in-ground pools, above ground pools, hot tubs, Jacuzzis and spas. Any pool or spa fence, gate or door must be maintained in good working order. All gates and doors providing access to a pool or spa must have self-closing and self-latching devices and open away from the pool even pools and spas built before laws were introduced in 1991 to make fencing compulsory. It is an offence to prop open any gate or door providing access to a pool or spa. FINES The Building Act 1993 contains penalties for pool owners who install a pool or spa and fail to carry out work in accordance with the Act.

Honey is childrens choice

By Ebonnie Kombani AUTHOR-ILLUSTR ATOR Elizabeth Honey will speak at the Ballan Librarys Mechanics Institute Supper Room this Saturday from 2-3.30pm. Honey is an award-winning author of poetry, picture books and junior novels. Her talk is aimed at adults about her work and is open to anyone interested. She is well known for her picture books including Princess Beatrice and the Rotten Robber, The Cherry Dress, Not a Nibble, Ten Blue Wrens and Thats not a Daffodil, among many others. Some of her acclaimed novels include Fiddle-back, Remote Man and Dont Pat the Wombat. She is playful and humorous in her prose and is known for her insights into childrens imaginations. According to publisher Allen & Unwin, Honey was a self described weedy child who always seemed to have a sore throat, so her parents didnt send her to school until she was nearly seven. She grew up on a farm in the bush near Wonthaggi where she would use her imagination to play. Honey said her own two children have been inspirational to her work. Several of her books have been Honour Books and won awards, which include Australian childrens choice awards YABBA and CROW.

Like it or hate it, Halloween is becoming the norm on 31st October every year. Over 70 children dressed up last Thursday and attended an event at Michellez Sweet Temptation shop in Ballan, walking to the Aged Care facility to show the residents some scary faces and costumes! Not to be out done, Bacchus Marshs main street even stopped traffic with children and plenty of adults getting into the zombie and horror theme. Photos Natasha Hurst and Helen Tatchell

Environmental Opinion
many people were at Mass when the earthquake hit. The monarchy ed to the hills to live as nomads, and thousands died. After Lisbon humans didnt live in the best of all possible worlds, and everything wouldnt be well in the Panglossian sense. Instead we had to make sure we looked after each other and consolidate human communities. Nature was cold, mute and to be treated as we liked, for God had nothing to do with her. Nature made us feel sublime and romantic but lived in a world apart from us. The Enlightenment and modern science red up. Can we still claim that natural disasters are pure chance? When all is well, when we own, possess and operate upon the land, the biosphere and ecological communities, theres no need to question our penetration of nature: our violent tinkering with its systems, ows, equilibrium and connections. When all is well theres nothing to lose except the future, which is hard to conceive or predict. A natural disaster is a loss in the present. Human land practices and increasing temperatures alter the earth, fuel res ammability and are inuenced by politics, law, philosophy and economics. In Lisbon, Western philosophy sought to sever God from nature; now we pretend that the fusion of humans and nature doesnt exist. The term natural disaster shouldnt be trusted. It is superstitious to think that humans and nature arent locked in a reciprocal relationship with political and ethical responsibility. It hurts to watch communities being decimated and having to rebuild. People who face disasters are brave and need to be supported. But the reason Western philosophy shifted in 1755 is that people cared about each other and the world. They sought to nd an honest way to be with each other. Honesty alters with history. While the Enlightenment has a lot to answer for, Lisbon also has much to teach us. While those who directly experience disasters are often incapable of immediate reection, for pain makes us as mute as nature, those who can speak should be allowed voice. We cannot ignore the world around us. These disasters demand response-ability. The human who stops ask-

with Tom Kingston

Never stop asking; Why?

I came across a recent article in Eureka Street (Vol 23 No 21) written by Bronwyn Lay reecting on bushres. Bronwyn Lay is an Australian writer living in France who has a background in law and political theory. Bronwyns parents John and Margaret live in Greendale. There is nothing I can really add to what Bronwyn writes. In order to t this very insightful piece into this brief opinion piece I will need to edit it and in doing so I only hope I do it justice. Bronwyn writes, In Lisbon 1755 the Western world changed direction. The ground literally moved as the biggest earthquake recorded in Western history hit the Portuguese coast and decimated Lisbon. A tsunami and res followed. It was All Saints day and ing Why? is headed for fundamentalism, or more natural disasters or both. Now, as in 1755, its crazy to declare that everything will be well. The natural disaster is a violent question mark. Nothing is the same in the aftermath. While comfort and love are vital, to retell the Panglossian lie that this is the best of all possible worlds is suicidal. While the Jesuits were killed in Lisbon for their cries that human sin rendered natures revolt, now we face the reverse. Those that expose the lie that humans are not implicated in natural disasters are sanctioned and told to shut up because were in mourning. I dont know many people who mourn without asking the heartbreaking question Why? To silence this question is to disrespect grief. All is not well. The French philosopher Michel Serres talks about two laws: to love each other, and to love the world. They belong together. We can mourn the world and each other simultaneously. Current politicians silence those who mourn the world, the natural, and accuse them of abandoning their fellow human. This lie orders us to turn away from the world, and each other. The natural disaster is a human disaster were in it together. Its going to be a long summer. What is your opinion? Victim only witness to dog attack

The case of a dog allegedly attacking a six year old girl on June 22 this year at a Balliang East farm was in Bacchus Marsh court again last Friday 1 November. Magistrate John Lesser, after hearing from Maddocks lawyers, representing Moorabool Shire council and Brett Melke from Melke Legal in Melbourne, representing the Wilson family has set a return date for a Contest Mention on Friday 6 December at 9.30am. Mr Sherwell for MSC will prepare a draft statement and provide his notes from an interview with Christine to Melke Legal before an informal round table discussion can take place. Consent from the parents of the young girl must be forthcoming before an informal interview with both lawyers and Christine can take place with the purpose to discuss the circumstances on how she received the facial injuries on Sunday 22 June. An agreed time and place will be sought before the return date. Mr Sherwell said this is a charge of a dog biting a person, a six year old female. It is alleged she has been bitten on the face by a working dog kelpie with some 300 stitches, lacerations and a front left hand side tooth dislodged from her mouth from the incident, he said. Christine is the only witness in the case and we are pursuing the surgeon who performed plastic surgery on her face to determine if the injuries are consistent with that of a dog bite. Bacchus Marsh hospital and the Royal Childrens Hospital have both supplied their records. Magistrate Lesser said if no consent, whatever option, is unpalatable.

ning its teaching methods around our core philosophy of reducing water risks around a child at a young age, said founder Paul Sadler. The new model begins for infants at just four months old, easing children into water and creating a safe and enjoyable environment. The restructured model includes certicate-based levels which focus on a childs swim skills and survival techniques and include celebrating children achieving four very proud

moments, recognition for becoming an independent swimmer, followed by open water swims. Our new Learner program is the core of the Swimland Journey its where we can really hone in on the skills every child needs to be comfortable around water. Being a skilled swimmer is a crucial development milestone in young people, and we constantly need to reiterate this in society. Paul Sadler Swimland Bacchus Marsh is a Swim Australia nationally accredited swim school.

continued from page 1 However, the vote followed debate over whether a Deputy should be elected at all, with Crs Tom Sullivan and Pat Toohey both speaking against the motion. I dont agree with this. What is the role of the Deputy Mayor? What is the role going to be? There are six other councillors capable of taking on this role, three former Mayors (Sullivan, Toohey and Comrie) are all capable. It is all about council. It raises the thought the Deputy Mayor may be doing an apprenticeship if you like and will be mayor next year, this is not the case. I think this is a backward step, a throwback to an earlier year, Cr Sullivan said. I also feel the other six councillors should have the opportunity and expertise to represent the Mayor. It gives every councillor the experience in representing the Mayor in every opportunity. I feel we have previously had this, it splits the team, said Cr Toohey. Cr Edwards spoke in favour of the motion. This group is different to groups in the past, I believe, he said. Outgoing Mayor Cr Toohey said he had been honoured to serve a second term as Mayor (he was Mayor in 2010) and said he hoped the new Mayor and council as a whole would continue to advocate to state and federal governments for improved services and infrastructure for a growing Moorabool.

Coinciding with its 25th anniversary, Pentland Hills Landcare has been given a $2,000 funding boost from CitiPower and Powercor. Pentland Hills Landcare member Anthony Dufty said it was tremendous to have the ongoing support of CitiPower/Powercorp who had contributed to completing a biolink along the entire length of the Myrniong Creek. In the past Citipower/ Powercorp have helped us to run community planting days that have seen over 15,000 plants go in the ground, Mr Dufty said.

The Pentland Hills Landcare community group was presented with a cheque during an evening of celebrations on October 19, which included a volcano dreaming display and panoramic Moorabool Landcare network banners. The group had much to celebrate after recently winning the Victorian Qantas Landcare Innovative Community Group Award. Special guest Rod Quantock stamped his own brand of humour on the night. Mr Dufty said Pentland Hills Landcare had more

than 100 members. Sustainable agriculture is our focus into the future. We would love to connect all the remnant patches and our aim is to help farmers remain as farmers into the future, he said. CitiPower and Powercor entered into a partnership with Landcare Australia in 2003 as a way of offsetting the environmental impacts of their assets and operations and to support school and community environmental projects. In the 1920s the school was rebuilt and a cloakroom added, and in 1963 extensive work was undertaken in preparation for the school centenary. David Koch MLC Member for Western Victoria Region Dear Editor, On Saturday, 19 October 2013, I was pleased to represent the Minister for Education, the Hon Martin Dixon, at the commemorative ceremony for the 150th anniversary of the Coimadai Primary School. The school is about 10 kilometres north-east of Bacchus Marsh off the Gisborne Road, overlooking Lake Merrimu, and is the heart of the local rural community. Facilities include a heritage building, art room, and two modern classrooms. The schools motto, The rural school that works, is supported by the strong values of respect, honesty, caring and citizenship. Coimadai Primary School has a proud and long history of education commencing in 1863 with a head teacher and 60 students. Originally named the Pyrete Common School, the name was changed to Coimadai PriDear Santa, This is a heartfelt plea to you and all the wellmeaning elves, reghters, friends and rellies of the world. Please do NOT give out lollies this Christmas. I know its the thought that counts, but its wrecking my life and the people around us. Many families feel the same. I realise Santas lolly-throw is a CFA/SES tradition, but is it worth keeping if just one sample has enough nasty additives to send a three-year old into a hyperactive haze for three days afterwards? Cooling off matters

off, they must give written notice to the seller or their agent. Buyers will also lose $100 or 0.2 per cent of the purchase price from their deposit, whichever is greater. This is a form of compensation for the seller. For example, if a buyer signs a contract at $650,000 and pays a 10 per cent deposit, the seller is entitled to keep $1,300 if cooling off occurs. Sellers obviously face some uncertainty during the three days of the cooling off period as to whether the sale will go ahead. Cooling off begins when the buyer signs the contract, not when its signed by both parties. There are some exceptions to the cooling off period. Pentland Calisthenics
The clubs Intermediates have nished off their competitive year with some fantastic results at the Royal South Street Competitions in Ballarat. With a very early morning start last Tuesday, the team of 17 girls and 4 coaches headed to Ballarat to compete in their last competition for 2013. The days results proved that it was once again a very even division and the girls came away with 1st in Clubs, HM in March and HC in Rods and Revue. Coach Cat Mayne said the girls worked extremely hard in every item and each performance was their best for the year. The Intermediates have had a fun and successful 2013 with Reserve Aggregates being achieved at Longbeach, Northern and Westside Competitions. They now will enjoy a three month break until the 2014 competition year begins. For full competition results visit http://www. pentlandcalisthenics.com. au/Competitions.html Jack Shaw sets a new 400m record.

Avenue Bowling Club

Results - Round 5 Premier Division travelled to Bareena BC hoping to cause an upset win. Again Sam Shannahans rink led the way, recording a very good 8 shot victory. Steve Sullivans rink were also victorious managing a 2 shot win. Glenn Sargents rink were terribly unlucky to drop 5 shots on the last end to deny them a victory after an even battle all day. Martin Sheas rink kept up with their opposition for 16 of the 25 ends, only tosee their opponents to come home strongly to win by 12 shots. Overall it was a commendable effort and in retrospect Avenue were unlucky to lose. Final Result - Avenue 87 lost Bareena 91 Division 3 hosted Ballan, who up until this week had only lost one game, that being against ladder leaders and early ag favourites Linton. The Avenue side had something to prove after last weeks poor showing against then bottom placed Mt Xavier and what better way to do it than against arguably the second best side in the Division. Leading the way was Joe Borattos rink who recorded a 17 shot victory, closely followed by Paul OFarrells rink which won by 15 shots. Bill Hawkens rink scored heavily after trailing at the tea break, winning 7 of the last 11 ends to run out winners by 9 shots. To complete the quadrella Peter Glass rink had a titanic battle with their opponents all day with no more than 3 shots between the teams at any stage. As it turned out Avenue won the rink on the last bowl of the day, thus giving the team 18 points for the day. Final Result - Avenue 111 def Ballan 69 Division 5 travelled to Midlands Golf, which is never an easy task on their greens. The side went with some condence after winning their past 2 matches, however things didnt quite go to plan. Lyn Robinsons rink led the challenge with an 8 shot win, as did Stewart Wilsons rink which recorded a 3 shot win. Bob Delaneys rink secured a draw, however Kevin Kneebones rinktrailed for much of the day, nally going down by 13 shots. Final Result - Avenue 93 lost Midlands Golf 95 Division 9 were at home to Learmonth. Having wonthe 2 games played to date (andbeing given walkovers in the other2 games), Avenue went into the contest hoping to consolidate their position on top of the ladder. With 3 newskips in the 3 rinks, it was expected the side would have their work cut out against their third placed opposition and thats how it turned out. Peter OConnors rink got home by 5 shots, whilst Dominic Borattos rink fell short by 3 shots. Unfortunately Cherald Sinclairs rink came up against a really strong opposition to go down by 19 shots. Final Result - Avenue 62 lost Learmonth 79 In the midweek competition, the Avenue ladies in Division 1 had a strong win over their opposition, however the Division 3 ladies could not overcome their Midlands Golf opponents, going down by 14 shots(games played on Friday 1/11/13).

The all conquering Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin barn from Smythes Creek (Ballarat) snared a double at Cranbourne on Tuesday, with 4-Y-0 Village Jasper/ Next Strike mare Goodtime Marjie leading throughout in the Condos Horse Transport Pace for C1 class over 2080 metres to defeat Our Puddy which trailed and Sheila Blige (one/one) in 1-59.9, with 8-Y-0 Village Jasper/Lady Lynwood gelding Goodtime Jasper doing exactly the same in the Melton Saddlery Pace for C4 & C5 class over 1609 metres, scoring from Our Nancy Miles which shadowed him from the bell, with Easy Lightning third after following the winner. The mile rate 1-57.9. Both winners are raced by Western District breeders Ian & Judy Slater and were driven by the stables Jaime-Lee King who used her concession on the latter. cross Fairest One Youare inside her running into the rst turn, with stablemate Bettor Give It (gate six) also pressing forward to park in the open. Allowed to bowl along without any pressure being applied, Shake It Mama had plenty in reserve at the straight entrance, before coasting to victory 1.3 metres in advance of Fairest One Youare and Bettor Give It in a sizzling mile rate of 1-54.7. Running her last half mile in 55.6 and quarter in 27 dead, Shake It Mama recorded her 15th victory in 38 race appearances.

Tough ex-Tasmanian 5-Y-0 Hugo Play showed his true staying prowess by taking out the $15,000 Tabcorp Park Melton Pace Final for M0 & M1 class over 2240 metres on Friday for horses which qualied in the heats held a week earlier. Now in the care of Lance Justice in close proximity of the track, Hugo Play a gelded son of Je Mint and Toy Story was allowed to nd his feet three wide after starting outside the front row, with stablemate Alchemy beginning at 100 miles an hour from the extreme draw to park outside the favourite Sals Mo which

led from gate three. Once balanced, Hugo Play moved forward to join Sals Mo and once there, Lance made it quite clear that the pacemaker was not going to get it easy. Taking a narrow lead on the nal bend, Hugo Play was very strong at the nish, defeating Alchemy which was given every chance on his back due to the drive of the night by Rod Petroff. Pole marker Mister Orion nished third after trailing the leader and using the sprint lane, while Sals Mo battled on to nish fourth. In quarters of 30.1, 29.3, 28.3 and 28.6, Hugo Play returned a mile rate of 1-56.5 for the journey. The margins a neck by 1.6 metres.

Ballan Tennis
Juniors The courts were a buzz on Saturday morning with all the junior teams playing at home. The B2 team played Mt.Helen and in the singles Joel, Juulke and Owen only lost 3 games between them, while Connor played some great tennis but was not able to get the important game-point. In the doubles, Juulke and Owen worked well together to score a 6 3 victory and together with Joel and Connor winning their double 6 4. Ballan 5/33 def Mt.Helen 1/16. The two C2 teams played each other and this always makes for good matches. The rst set was very close with Ben and Oscar getting over the line in a tiebreak against Chantelle and Emily. In the second set, Hamish and Ellie had to warm up a bit, but were not able to get a game against Emily and Eva. The third and fourth set were very close and both teams worked very hard for their points. In the end it was Ballan Blue who could keep their winning streak going. Ballan Blue 3/23 def Ballan Black 1/13. The C3 played against Buninyong with Kelsey and Luke moving one grade up to this team. They did very well. In the rst two sets MacKinnon/Ben and Kelsey/Luke played very close sets, but unfortunately both sets were lost with 4 6. In the third set the girls teamed up and played great shots, only to lose the set 3 6. In the last set Ben and Luke got the set that was more than deserved by winning 6 4. Ballan 1/17 lost to Buninyong 3/22. The C4 team played against Meredith and came away with a win. Townsen and Tully played a great set only to lose in the tie-break. Daniel and Jessica also gave their very best, but could not quite get the important game-points. With 2 sets and 4 games behind the players rallied in the third and fourth set. First Townsen and Daniel gave the Ballan team their rst set with a convincing 6 3 win and then Tully and Jessica brought home the win with an even better score of 6 2. Ballan 2/20 def Meredith 2/17. Next Week B2 v Mt.Clear (at Mt.Clear) C2 Black v Buninyong (at BTC 1&2) C2 Blue v Dunnstown (at BTC 1&2) C3 v Elaine (at Elaine) C4 v Gordon (at Wallace) C5 v Elaine (at Elaine) Seniors A3 The conditions were perfect for tennis last Saturday, but not so perfect on the scorecard for the Ballan team. Playing against Smythesdale, Ballan struggled to win a game let alone a set. The mixed team of Paul and Helen Tatchell were fruitful in winning seven games in a 7/9 loss, but were

Sport

up 7/2 before the Smythesdale duo found their form. Shane Woodroffe and Paul combined to get another six games on the scorecard, hoping to make it look half decent, with Kristy Tatchell and Samantha Lee grabbing three games in their ladies game. Overall, Paul Tatchell was

the best Mens player, with 13 games from Shane (10), and Darcy Tatchell (3). Best Ladies player was Helen Tatchell with (7), then Kristy on (5) and Samantha with (4). Final Score Ballan 0/21 lost to Smythesdale 9/73 Next Week Ballan v Rokewood (away)

Bacchus Marsh Bowling Club

The second top of the table clash in a row beckoned for Division 1 as they travelled to Lanceeld, with one team destined to remain the only undefeated club in the comp. Unfortunately it wasnt the Marsh, with Lanceeld staving off a late charge to win by 15 shots after leading all day. Dylan Filuk was the only winner for Bacchus Marsh, 29-20. Amy Gloury lost 21-27, Jeff Holloway 18-30 and Alan Maher 16-22 to complete the 2-16, 84-99 loss. After some team changes, Division 2 had a much needed win over Diggers Rest 108-102. It was a lopsided match in some respects as both teams had two big rink wins. Barry

(Lord St)

Paul Tatchell was the best Mens player with 13 games.

Shane Woodroffe gets airborne serving in his match.

Steenholdt won 43-18 and John Banks 36-17, while Helen Steenholdt and Nipper Hanson lost 14-29 and 15-38 respectively. The win sees the Marsh equal third on the ladder on wins. Division 3 are ying, with another win this week, this time over Romsey. Ian Webster won 21-19 and J Mcgregor 36-15, while Sue Stevenson lost 14-31. The 71-65 win sees Bacchus Marsh equal with also undefeated Kyneton Red, two games clear of third. Next week sees Division 1 take on Kyneton Golf at home, Division 2 meeting Kyneton Golf away and Division 3 playing Kyneton Blue at Kyneton.
