MonValley District Newsletter

MonValley District Office 307 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554 Phone: 304-366-6811 ~ Fax: 304-333-0224
November is a month for thanksgiving. As the Superintendent of the MonValley District I am grateful for the many ways that congregations are carrying out effective ministry in the name of Jesus Christ. Pastors and laity are working together in witness, mission, and service. Glory Sightings are in every corner of the district. In the past several months I have seen dramatic reversals in congregations where pastors and congregations are in new or renewed partnership for ministry. I am grateful for the fantastic response to the 3 Walk/Run/Bike events (40 miles) for Imagine No Malaria. $15,603 has been received from pledges or contributions. I know some churches have yet to participate but are planning to do so. We have easily surpassed our goal of $10,000. Thanks to Andrew Tennant and Bob Cover who co-chaired the walks. Charge Conferences are two-thirds completed. They have gone exceptionally well. I am grateful and have appreciated the advance work that pastors and laity have done in preparation. There has been a good spirit and attendance has been great. Your presentation of checks for the World Service Educational Funds has put us on track to reach our $11,645 goal. The hospitality of host congregations has been very much appreciated. Although a few congregations are behind on their apportionments, pastors tell me they will provide leadership to their congregations to catch up in these last months of the year. Your apportionments do make a difference in ministry in West Virginia and around the world. It is mission money indeed. 123 of 176 congregations have paid their district apportionments. The district apportionments are the lowest in the conference. We have been able to keep them low because of the high percentage of churches that pay them. There is one day of annual clergy interviews left in November. I appreciate the willingness to clergy to accommodate the interview dates given them and churches who have allowed me to use a room as a satellite office across the district. With few exceptions all have made their appointments. I am looking forward to the District Christmas Luncheon on Saturday, December 7, at Gateway UMC, Fairmont. It will be a refreshing break in the midst of a busy Advent season. Because there are often many questions about completing the Annual Statistical Report, I have planned a special workshop on Saturday, January 4, 10 AM at Valley Chapel UMC. Finally, Bishop Sandra Steiner Ball and husband Barry will be leaders for the district clergy/spouse retreat on January 10-11 at Stonewall Jackson Lodge. I appreciate the willingness of congregations through the Pastor Parish Relations Committees to provide scholarships for pastors and spouses to attend. We have been blessed to be a blessing, and I am grateful to see pastors and congregations living their faith in ways that is a blessing to others. Grace & freedom,

District Educational Funds Emphasis for 2013$11,645 Goal

Our mission emphasis for the 2013 MonValley District Charge Conferences is the three Educational Funds established by General Conference. MEF, the Ministerial Educational Fund, provides scholarships for Licensing School, Course of Study, and Seminary as well as continuing formation events in our Annual Conference. (25% of monies received are returned to our Annual Conference.) Your pastor has benefited from MEF funds in some way. The Africa University Fund, provides scholarships to the only degree granting institution of higher education supported by the UMC in Africa. Young men and women from 25 countries come to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees. The Black College Fund supports the 11 historically Black United Methodist colleges and universities here in the United States. As is our custom, I will be asking for a check from each church for $1 per member at Charge Conference made out to MonValley District to insure that we reach our district goal of $11,645. (Please do not send this money through the Conference Treasurers office with your conference apportionment.) Thank you to those churches that will be faithful to this mission asking.

Advance Preparation Questions MonValley District Parish Charge Conferences Worship Gatherings 2013
In order for our parish wide worship gatherings to be focused on worship, encouragement, and practical ways to strengthen local congregations, each pastor and charge needs to be sure that the following items have been covered in advance. Each pastor will be asked these questions.
1. Have the Charge Conference Secretary, Recommendations for Ministry, and all Officers (local church and charge), been approved by the Church Council/s? Have Lay Servant and Lay Speaker Reports been received. 2. Does the Healthy, Vital, Fruitful Congregation Report reflect your vision and ministry action plan to reach new persons for Jesus Christ? 3. Has the Gifts and Service to Mission-District and Conference 2014 Commitment Form been discussed and completed by the Church Council? 4. Has the Church Council received a copy of the Missional Fair Share Apportionments for 2014 (Conference and District) and are you committed to leading your church to pay them in full? 5. Is there a check made out to MonValley District from the church/es of $1 per member for the World Service Education Funds (Africa University, Black College Fund, Ministerial Education Fund)? 6. Has the Finance Committees Report been completed and shared with the Church Council with an up to date accounting for all fund balances? 7. Has the Trustees Report been completed and shared with the Church Council listing all assets and insurance coverage? 8. Has the Parsonage Inspection been completed and shared with the Church Council? 9. Has the Pastors Compensation Sheet been approved by the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, the Finance Committee, and Church Council(s) for inclusion in the 2014 church budget? 10. Has the Pastor shared his/her written report and Continuing Formation form with the Church Council or the congregation?

Attention Church Treasurers:

Effective January 1, 2013, local church treasurers were no longer bonded by the blanket policy of the Annual Conference. You need to be sure that you are adequately covered under the local church property and liability insurance.

MonValley District Imagine No Malaria Walk/Run/Bike Report

Our third MonValley District Walk/Run/Bike for Imagine No Malaria was held on October 5. We had our best day ever, with walkers, runners, and bikers completing the 10 miles between Shinnston and Monongah raising $6,470. First Shinnston helped with registration, Enterprise provided a half-way water stop, and First Monongah greeted us at the end of the journey. The three walks have raised $15,603 and the district office is still receiving money. I am much appreciative of the support by our district. If your church has not yet made a commitment to Imagine No Malaria in some way, please ask them to do so. Remember $10 saves the life a child. If you knew it was for one of the children of your congregation you would give the money without hesitation. Ask persons to make a $10 pledge, (buy a net, save a life) for each child or grandchild. Buying a mosquito net sounds so simple, but it is so effective in saving the life of a child from malaria. Thanks for the generous support of this district project. You have been blessed to be a blessing.

It Worked for Me Advent Mission Candle

Christmas is a time of giving. One of the ways we would emphasize giving to a special emphasis or mission project during Advent was with an Advent Mission Candle. Beginning a few Sundays before Advent, I would place a candle on the communion table and invite persons to contribute $1 to keep it lit one hour during the season of Advent ($24 would keep it lit for one day). Each Sunday I would announce how much had been received and how long the candle would stay lit. This year there are 25 days in Advent, so the total would be $600. Each year we more than reached our goal often keeping it lit far beyond Epiphany, January 6. Can you imagine the benefit to our mission projects or campus ministry units? One year I found a large 4-foot electric candle that I sat on the front porch of the church, but usually it was just a special candle on the communion table. The candle did not stay lit during the week for obvious safety concerns, but I would light it each Sunday when I arrived early for church and extinguish it after folks left. People understood that obvious concern. The Advent Mission Candle was a great way to remind people that Christmas is not about us but about the gift of Jesus Christ to the world. It worked for me to help expand the outreach vision of the church. It might work for you.

Attention: Clergy and Treasurers

The Conference Treasurers office will close on Friday December 20th and reopen on Monday December 30th. Jim Berner, Conference Treasurer, will generate a pension arrearage report to the district office on the 20th. Any arrearages at that time will have to be covered by the district office. Please do not put the district office in that position. Clergy and treasurers, please make sure the pension payment is sent so that it will be received in the conference treasurers office before December 20. The treasurers office is notifying churches in October, November, and December mailings to have December's pension payments to them no later than the 20th. Remember, pension payments are due upon receipt at the first part of the month. On a separate note: The books for 2013 will close on Friday January 3rd at close of business that day. That will give churches that whole week to mail any apportionment money they might receive on the last Sunday in December.

Mission and Ministry News

Heart and Hand House, Inc.: The end of the year is fast approaching, but that doesnt mean things are slowing down at
Heart and Hand! Along with our usual activities food pantry, layette distribution, thrift stores, and garden market our Backpack Feeding Program at Junior Elementary School is up and running and our annual Christmas Toy Sale has been scheduled for December 13-14. In addition, we will be holding a grand opening for our new Community Garden Market facility, The Market Place, on Friday and Saturday, November 15-16. The Market Place not only houses our garden market, but a coffee and donut shop, as well. The facility is a work in progress, but we invite you to stop by and celebrate the opening of this initial phase of the project with us. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we want to take the opportunity to say a special thank you to our MonValley District family for your continued support and encouragement -- not just at the holidays, but every day. Our ministry is blessed to have such a great staff, great volunteers, and so many great friends who enable us to continue serving Barbour County families in need all through the year. We are, indeed, thankful!

- Brenda Hunt, Executive Director

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical College: The first semester at FSU and
PCTC is in full swing. Our Free Lunch program is going exceptionally well. We are averaging between 60-70 students a week. We wouldnt be able to continue this ministry without the support of local churches. Thank You. Our food pantry is up and runningwe can always use donations of canned soups, vegetables, peanut butter, cheese and crackers, macaroni & cheese, etc. Remember what you liked to eat when you were in college. We will be starting a new program at the beginning of the New Year. We will be putting the power of prayer into action. Churches or church groups will have the opportunity to adopt a floor and/or part of a floor to be in prayer for the students. Stay tuned for more information.

- Maria Wiblin, FSU/PC&TC Campus Pastor

West Virginia University Campus Ministry: The month of October started off with a nice visit from Bishop Steiner
Ball. She came to learn about the types of activities and the relationship of campus ministry and Wesley Church. Our students provided a dessert reception as she had just visited Fairmont State and enjoyed lunch with those students. We continue to provide a light dinner before our program each week, unless we are indulging in some appetizers at a local restaurant! Our favorite program each semester is what we call the Big/Little Give. It is different each semester, but this time each student was given a one dollar bill and a small bag with crackers, a Bible, post-it notes, gold candy coins and other misc items. They had 1 hour to reach out to as many people as possible. Its always exciting to hear the stories about how many lives were actually impacted with so very little effort. The story that stood out this time was the deep appreciation of some of our cities homeless who were not only given some food, but our students stopped and talked with them. I was reminded, Whatever you do for the least of them, you do for me. Matt. 25: 40. On this evening our students were blessing God! The first weekend of November will be busy! On Friday we are planning Pancakes on High Street from 11pm -1am. Our hope is to reach out to some of those students who might need some food on their stomachs! We will also be hosting the Zeta Kora Get-Together for Kappa Phi. College women from several campuses representing Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia will be here overnight on Sat. Nov. 2nd and worship with the good people of Wesley United Methodist Church the next day. Our Internet Radio Ministry is up and running every Wednesday from 11am-1pm. If you are at lunch break or can listen to music during the day, go to Loudcity.com and put in radio station TQAW. Wed love to get the word out that we are expanding our ministry into the technology world and out of the building into peoples places of work, rest, and play! TQAW stands for The QUAD at Wesley! Finally, check out our new website for more details about our programming at thequadwv.com!

Shinnston Cooperative Parish: November is a great time for the Shinnston Cooperative Parish. This month we will be
outfitting our students at Big Elm and Lumberport Elementary Schools with winter coats. Each year, several hundred children will have brand new winter coats due to the generous hearts of those in our churches and in the surrounding areas who support our Coats for Kids campaign. Also, in November we will be raising money for our Baskets of Love campaign which will benefit the patrons of both Lords Pantries in our area. Stay tuned for more information on this campaign.
