BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

1.1 BACKGROUND
The scope of this document is to provide a qualitative assessment of possible interaction between High
Energy Pipe Breaks and the adjacent Safety Structure, Systems and Components (SSCs), required for plant
shutdown. This documents includes a preliminary analysis of the effects of pipe whip due to high energy
lines break on critical components within Room A203/1, located in the Nuclear Island of the Unit 3 of
Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant.

1.2 PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to assess whether a postulated high energy line break has to be considered
aggressive, based essentially on layout considerations and simplified assumptions about pipe dynamics
following a break. High energy pipe breaks resulting in potential damage to pipe-line and components
relevant for safety (see ref. 1.19) will be considered aggressive breaks.

1.3 BASIC CONSIDERATIONS


A preliminary list of High Energy Lines to be investigated looking for pipe break locations that can result in
potential damage of nearby components, is provided in ref. 1.19. The evaluation of the pipe break impact on
nearby components and the whole pipe whip analysis are based on the assumption that pipe breaks are
expected to occur at postulated break locations, corresponding to a Terminal End or to an Intermediate
Location. Such approach is consistent with the recommendations of the applicable codes and standards (see
ref. 1.18, 1.18, 1.18).
A branch terminal end corresponds to the fixed points in the piping layout, i.e. connection nozzles to
equipment, welding anchor points and wall penetrations where all piping degree of freedom are constrained..
The identification of terminal ends for High Energy Lines located in room A203/1 is reported also in ref.
1.19 and ref. 1.19.
According to piping stress analysis reports (see ref. 1.19) of piping lines from PKL-24 that cover the lines
whose routing is inside room A203/1 there are no intermediate pipe break locations for pipe branches
considered in this report.
As a consequence only the PBL at terminal end shall be considered for the aggressive lines evaluation.

For a complete survey of the methodology employed to indentify pipe break locations and to evaluate the
overall impact of postulated high energy pipe breaks see ref. 1.19.
Each postulated pipe break location is identified by the corresponding branch tag and terminal end or
intermediate location point tag. Information about the system (i.e. DPS) each analyzed branch belongs to and
about the corresponding PK line are also provided as a reference. It should be pointed out that PK lines
identification is according to ref. 1.19 (to be consistent with lines identification used in the Free Whip
Analysis reports, see ref. 1.19 for room A203/1), whereas the stress analyses reports (ref. 1.19) can actually
follow a different piping lines numbering.
The layout of safety relevant components is inferred from the plant 3D model ref. 1.19 and from available
layout drawings (see ref. 1.19 for room A203/1).
It is possible that the plant 3D model ref. 1.19 shows some inconsistency and the layout drawings do not
show all components included in the target list ref. 1.19: in such cases the conclusions of this qualitative
assessment have to be considered preliminary. Any relevant inconsistency resulting from the plant 3D model
ref. 1.19 inspection will be pointed out in this report.

QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF AGGRESSIVE PIPE BREAK LINES


The evaluation of the potential impact of postulated pipe breaks on items important to safety is based on the
following simplifying and conservative assumptions:following an high energy line break, it is assumed that
the unrestrained pipe broken end starts to rotate around a plastic hinge formed along the broken line.
The plastic hinge location along the whipping pipe is computed according to the methods outlined in ref
1.19;
as a general case all components located within a spherical volume centred at the plastic hinge and with
radius equal to the distance between the plastic hinge location and the broken terminal end, are considered
potentially affected by the whipping pipe. This is a conservative assumption, since the whipping pipe motion
is not expected to be completely unrestrained. However without pipe whip restraints, the broken end motion
for large displacements is difficult to predict, since, for a typical piping layout it can be shown that the
broken pipe trajectory is not contained in a single plan (see also ref. 1.19).
Moreover the impact with other pipe lines and components can modify the starting terminal end trajectory of
an unrestrained branch. Where the layout of branches affected by the postulated break is simple and
contained in a single plan, the assessment is based on less conservative assumptions (see ref. 1.19 and the
following sections).
No attempt is made to compute the forces resulting from the impact of the whipping pipe on nearby Safety
SSCs; it has been safely assumed that whenever an impact between the whipping pipe and a critical
component occurs (based on above mentioned layout considerations), the target item involved is somewhat
affected and potentially damaged (except where the target component is a pipe line with larger size
compared to the broken pipe, see ref. 1.19).
The effect of fluid jet impingement on safety SSCs is out of the scope of this document and will not be taken
into account for the break aggressive assessment.
The High Energy Lines to be investigated as potential aggressive pipe breaks in room A203/1 are Line 24,
belonging to the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) DPS.3.14.01 (see ref. 1.19 for a complete list of a
preliminary list of high energy lines to be analyzed). The terminal ends where pipe breaks are expected to
occur are also reported ref. 1.19, 1.19 and 1.19-as well.

shows the terminal end 3JNG10/02_B1, branch 3JNG10BR002, and its surrounding.
According to ref. 1.19 the pipe line break is postulated to occur in correspondence of this terminal end.
shows also an indicative position for the plastic hinge formation. A quantitative evaluation that shows where
plastic hinge forms along branch 3JNG10BR002 is reported in ref. 1.19.
A possible pipe whip trajectory and the area affected by the unrestrained motion of the broken terminal end
are also sketched in a.. The piping layout of this portion of line 24 is not contained in a single plan, thereby it
is safer to assume that components included within a spherical volume centred on plastic hinge location can
be potentially impacted
The figure shows that several pipe branches and components could be directly impacted by the whipping
pipe.(the Hydroaccumulators ,and the pipe branches 3JNG11BR002, 3JNG21BR017, 3JNG12BR001 and
3JNB20BR001 (see Table 2-2) ).
The components and the valve on the above pipe lines are included in the target list of safety related items,
ref. 1.19
As a consequence the postulated pipe break occurring at terminal end 3JNG10/02_B1 should be considered
aggressive at this stage. Further analyses considering jet impingement effects on nearby components and

surrounding. According to ref. 1.19 the pipe line break is postulated to occur in correspondence of this
terminal end.
Figure 2-4a shows also an indicative position for the plastic hinge formation. The quantitative evaluation that
shows where plastic hinge forms along branch 3JNG11BR002 is reported in ref. 1.19.
A possible pipe whip trajectory and the area affected by the unrestrained motion of the broken terminal end
are also sketched in a.. The piping layout of this portion of line 24 is not contained in a single plan, thereby it
is safer to assume that components included within a spherical volume centred on plastic hinge location can
be potentially impacted
The figure shows that several pipe branches and components could be directly impacted by the whipping
pipe .(the hydroaccumulator 3JNG11BB001, the branches 3JNG10BR002, 3JNG21BR017, 3JNG12BR001

contained in a single plane. In such condition (see also ref. 1.19) it can be reasonably assumed that pipe
trajectory itself is contained within the same plane and is not expected to affect a larger spherical volume.
The figure 2-3 b shows that the valves 3JMN21AA004 , 3JNB20AA003 and the small draining pipeline
3KTA11BR034 are impacted by the whipping pipe broken end.
All these components are included in the target list ref. 1.19 From above considerations it can be concluded

this stage.

Figure 2-5 a,b show the terminal end 3JNG12/01_B1 of pipe line 24, branch 3JNG12BR001, and its
surrounding. According to ref. 1.19 the pipe line break is postulated to occur in correspondence of this
terminal end.
Both pictures show also the expected final plastic hinge position around which whipping pipe pivoting is
expected. A quantitative evaluation for plastic hinge formation along branch 3KBF11BR003 is reported in
ref. 1.19. A possible pipe whip trajectory and the area affected by the unrestrained motion of the broken
terminal end are also sketched. The piping layout of this portion of line 24 is not contained in a single plan.
In such condition (see also ref. 1.19) thereby it is safer to assume that components included within a
spherical volume centred on plastic hinge location can be potentially impacted
The figure shows that several pipe branches could be directly impacted and damaged by the whipping pipe .
The most part of these are included in the target list ref. 1.19
From above considerations it can be concluded that the postulated pipe break occurring at terminal end
3JNG12/01_B1 should be considered aggressive.
Further analyses considering jet impingement effects on nearby components and on the walls restraining

Figure 2-5 a,b show the terminal end 3JNG12/01_B1 of pipe line 24, branch 3JNG12BR001, and its
surrounding. According to ref. 1.19 the pipe line break is postulated to occur in correspondence of this
terminal end.
Both pictures show also the expected final plastic hinge position around which whipping pipe pivoting is
expected. A quantitative evaluation for plastic hinge formation along branch 3KBF11BR003 is reported in
ref. 1.19. A possible pipe whip trajectory and the area affected by the unrestrained motion of the broken
terminal end are also sketched. The piping layout of this portion of line 24 is not contained in a single plan.
In such condition (see also ref. 1.19) thereby it is safer to assume that components included within a
spherical volume centred on plastic hinge location can be potentially impacted
The figure shows that several pipe branches could be directly impacted and damaged by the whipping pipe .
The most part of these are included in the target list ref. 1.19
From above considerations it can be concluded that the postulated pipe break occurring at terminal end
3JNG12/01_B1 should be considered aggressive.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION


High Energy Lines located within room A203/1 of Nuclear Island of Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant (unit 3)
have been investigated looking for pipe breaks that can result in potential damage of nearby components.
Pipe Breaks triggering pipe whip that can affect pipe-line or safety relevant components (see ref. 1.19 for a
complete list) are considered aggressive.
The identification of components that can be affected by the high energy lines pipe whip is based on
simplified assumptions about terminal ends motion and on system layout inferred from the 3D model, ref.
1.19.
Table 3-29 reports a summary of the Qualitative Assessment findings for room A203/1.
The conclusions of this report have to be considered preliminary since all considerations are based on the
layout inferred from preliminary 3D model (see ref. 1.19) and the effects of jet impingement are not
included.
The conclusions of this report are based on a qualitative assessment and a simplified conservative approach.
Refined analyses providing more accurate information about whipping pipe dynamics and applied loads on
nearby components can be performed wherever the assessment conclusions are deemed too conservative.
