Ellen White says that we should study Daniel. Revelation means a book opened. The study of Daniel and Revelation should be linked. Those who study it will be blessed and Satan is the one who says some parts of these prophetic books cannot be understood. EGW also suggests we should study Daniel along with the smaller prophetsespecially Malachi. THE RELEVANCE OF DANIEL Predictive Time prophecies give us certainty about Inspiration, the 2nd coming, Jesus, the heavenly sanctuary, and the little horn. Such prophecies help answer the question: How do you know? Matthew 24:15- the abomination of desolation- Jesus refers to the importance of reading and understanding the book of Daniel. STRUCTURE OF DANIEL/INTERPRETATION PRINCIPLES The first 6 chapters are historical and the last 6 are prophetic apparently. Apparently Jesus transitioned from a literal/local application of Matthew 24:15 to a spiritual/worldwide application. This apparently upholds the principle of known to unknown. Ch. 1 is literal attack of Babylonians on Israel whereas Chapter 12 is attack of spiritual Babylon on spiritual Israel. Principle of repeat and enlarge are for Daniel 2, 7, 8-9, 10-12 HISTORICAL SETTING/ARCHEOLOGY DANIEL 1:1 Shows Jerusalem falling 3 times. Archeological evidences remedied the apparent discrepancy between Daniel 1:1 and Jeremiah 25:1

There have been 3 evidences of Archeology. They are: Nebuchadnezzars name on thousands of bricks. Nebuchadnezzars name on many documents. The Cuneiform Tablet in the British museum which talks about Nebuchadnezzar successful attack against Egypt at Carchemish, the death of Nabopolassar, and Nebuchadnezzar coming to Babylons throne. Daniel 2 helps to establish the following questions: What is certainty, what is real, how do you know Gods word is inspired, is the 2nd coming a fable, and what about pluralism? Daniel 2:45 says the dream is certain and the interpretation sure. Since the probability of Daniel telling the king his dream is so small, it shows that it was divinely revealed. QUESTIONS ANSWERED Certainty is measured by probability. The smaller the chance of occurrence, the greater the probability. Thus, we know that the fulfillment of small probabilities come from a divine source. Daniel 2 lets us know that history is not cyclical but linear, going forward to the second coming because it is revealed that divine intervention fulfilled the probability of something so small as telling a dream. Daniel 2 shows that the Bible is inspired because it has predictions, the probability of which can only be revealed/fulfilled through divine intervention. Thus, the second coming is just as certain as the rise and fall of Babylon, Greece, etc. Daniel 2 annihilates pluralism[the idea that all religions get you to the same place] because the Babylonian failed the test of revealing the Nebuchadnezzars dream. DATES * KINGDOMS, HISTORY 605 509, 509 331, 331 168, 168 476 AD PK 499-502 shows that the rise and fall of empires is connected with the working out of the will of God.

The metals decrease in value signifies self glory, violating church-state principles, and rejecting Gods sovereignty. Increase density shows increasing military strength. The enemy caused the truth to be misinterpreted and misapplied by Nebuchadnezzar. He hinders Gods purposes by causing men to work for their own glory instead of Gods glory. PARALLELS WITH REVELATION 13 & 16 Universal setting, death decree, literal/spiritual image, literal/spiritual Hebrews, no music in Rev 13. Daniel 3:2-3 says that Nebuchadnezzar gathered together all the leaders of the kingdom. Revelation 16:14 has the gathering for the great battle. The image is the false Sabbath. We must obey God rather than men. As long as it does not conflict with duty to God, its okay to obey the laws of the land. Even if laws are enforced to obey the true God according to the truth, this is still inappropriate because God never compels obedience from man. 23 years since the death of Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon fell quite a bit from its golden age. Nebuchadnezzar Evil-Merodach Brother-in-law Nabonidus Belshazzar During this time, Cyrus the great took over the kingdom of Media and Lydia. This is 50 years after the vision of Daniel 2. The books of Daniel are not in chronological order. Daniel is currently 70 and it is the first year of Belshazzar. Characteristics and Identifying Marks of the Little Horn It rose out of the fourth beast. Verses 8 and 24. It arose among the ten horns geographically. Verses 7 and 8. In the same way fingerprints and DNA pinpoint a specific person, so are the details of Daniel 7, Revelation 13, and Revelation 17 so specific that making a mistake in identification is highly improbable. Rising of the little horn Little horn came out of the four winds because in Hebrew the gender of the pronoun must match its antecedent. Since the pronoun them is masculine, and since horns is feminine, this means that winds, which can be masculine or feminine, is the antecedent Daniel 7 features predatory animals while Daniel 8 features Rams and goats. This is significant because Rams and goats are associated with the sanctuary which shows that the context of Daniel 8 is the sanctuary. Symbol of the Little Horn- How do we know its both pagan/papal Rome? We know the little horn is PAGAN because: o Daniel 8:9 says this power extended toward the South[Egypt], toward the East[Seleucid Empire/Syria], and toward the Pleasant Land[Palestine] o The place of his sanctuary was cast down- in the destruction of Jerusalem o Daniel 8:24 says he destroyed the mighty and holy people[1260 persecution] We know this little horn is papal because: o Grew up to the host of heaven and cast down the stars to the ground[stars represent leaders- Rev. 12:4 woman] o Destroyed mighty/holy people in papal reign[Daniel 8:24] o The Roman emperor[pagan] was replaced by the Pope[papal]. Links between Daniel 8 and 9 The reason why we know that Daniel 9 refers to the Daniel 8 prophecy is because of the Hebrew word Hazon. This word shows that Daniel wanted to understand the meaning of the entire vision[not just 2300] is for the time of the end and that Gabriel was the one interpreting the entire vision for Daniel. The Hebrew word Mareh refers to the 2300 evening and mornings because Gabriel already explained the Hazon. Daniel 8:26 clearly says the vision of the 2300 days. Since the Mareh was left unexplained in Daniel 8, and since the Mareh is what is being explained in Daniel 9, we know that the cut off or the Chathak, refers to the vision[Mareh] of the 2300 days. To make an end of sins means to make an end of sin offerings according to the antitypical sacrifice of Christ. Sealing up the vision refers to the ratifying of the vision. Since Christ came at the specified time, which was a very improbable event, we know that the time of judgment is just as sure as Christs coming because the two prophecies are linked. Anointing the most holy most likely refers to the anointing of the sanctuary because nowhere else is it applied to a person AND because the heavenly sanctuary is what is under discussion. The reason why we use the third decree to indicate the going forth of the commandment is because this is the only decree that made provision for the restoration of the civil state as a complete unit with full autonomy, subject to Persian overlordship. Daniel 10 begins the last of the four major visions in the book of Daniel which encompasses Daniel 10-12 The time appointed refers to the intensity of struggle/warfare. The prophecy of Daniel 10 was given in response to Daniels three week intense fasting and prayer episode. Gabriel then explained that the reason for his delay was due to the prince of Persia who withstood him until Michael came to help. Thus, Daniel 10 reveals[as well as comments of the Spirit of Prophecy] the great conflict that occurs between loyal and disloyal angels amongst the rulers of different nations. Thus, the final events which involve the king of the north can be attributed to the working of evil angels. This chapter shows the Great Controversy theme because we see Gabriel being withstood by the prince of Persia[for a certain time] in spite of the fact that God is all-powerful. The word Michael, which means[who is like God] is only used in apocalyptic passages of the Bible[Revelation 12:7, Daniel 10:13, 21- Daniel 12:1, Jude 1:9] and is only used to refer to Christ when He is at war with Satan. King of the North refers to Satans Babylonian kingdom.

Principles of Interpreting Daniel 11 Movement from the literal and local to the spiritual and worldwide is evident in Daniel 2, 7, 8, and 11. The cross is the deciding line between literal/local and spiritual/worldwide applications. Historicist way of Interpretation says: o use the Bible to figure out the meaning of symbols, .AND o examine how history the fulfills that symbol. Focus of Daniel 10-12 Daniel 10:14[what shall befall thy people in the latter days] shows that the focus of the prophecy is Gods people.

Greece- Rise of the King of the South We determine the location of the kings of north and south by using Palestine/Israel as the central location of the prophet. Thus, the king of the north[Syria/Seleucus] would be the empire north of Palestine, and the king of the south[Ptolemy/Egypt] would be the empire south of Palestine.
