The Mancelona
Ironmen of coach
Dan Boo Derrer
moved a step closer
to achieving two of
their team goals for
the 2013 season on
Friday. The 59-14 triumph over
game-but-outmanned Gaylord St.
Mary pushed the Ironmens record
to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the Ski Valley South, clinching at least a share
of the league title and placing them
one win away from a Division 7
playoff berth.

it, we want to win it outright, Derrer said. We still have to win at

Forest Area (this Friday) to put it
away and we also need a win Friday to be in the playoffs. We dont
want to leave it up to week nine.
The Snowbirds of first-year head
coach Kevin OConnell slipped to 34 overall and 1-3 in the league. They
now must win out against Johannesburg-Lewiston and Kingsley to
make the playoffs as a 5-4 team.
OConnell didnt mince words
when asked about the loss at
Mancelona.
They kicked the living snot out
of us on both sides of the ball, he
said. They gave us a woodshed
beating. Theres no other way to
say it. They ran around us, by us
and through us.
Mancelona established control
up front early in the game and
moved the ball with lethal efficiency on drive after drive. The
Ironmen scored the first seven
times they had the ball. The defense also got into the scoring act
when sleek 300-pound defensive
lineman Keegan Richardson
scooped up a fumble at the 1-yard
line in the third quarter and raced
like a rocket 99 yards the other way
for his first career touchdown.
The game was competitive until
midway through the second quarter.
St. Mary scored right out of the
gate to temporarily silence
Mancelonas huge Homecoming
crowd. Senior QB Nick Harrington,
the Human Hurricane, swept
around the right end for 35 yards
on the first play from scrimmage
and then hooked up with the fleeting figure of Jack Lochinski for 35
more yards on the second play. Harrington capped the drive himself
with a 3-yard plunge to paydirt.
The Ironmen, using the groundand-pound assault that has been so
effective, got the ball back and immediately began to control the
trenches and control the tempo of

to secure a 24-7 lead by the end of
the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter,
though, the ever-dangerous Harrington struck again for an electrifying 59-yard TD, his 25th of the
season. That combined with Jack
Lochinskis PAT made the score a
respectable 24-14.
It was all the Ironmen after that,
however. They scored three more
times before the end of the half to
go on top 47-14.
The determined Snowbirds, who
continued to battle hard in spite of
the score, drove down at the outset
of the third quarter and were on
the brink of scoring when the ball
came loose and defensive lineman
Rocket Richardson alertly
grabbed it and came barreling
down the sidelines the other way.
Keegan, cool as a western sheriff, motored down the field like an
oversized running back with his
teammates on the sidelines going
crazy and the frenzied home crowd
on its feet cheering and screaming
for him. He received an escort from
his teammates as he raced all the
way to the other end zone to put his
team on top 53-14.
Keegan then performed a distinctive post-touchdown celebration, flopping on his back in the
end zone and pretending to be exhausted. He received a game ball
signed by everyone on the team
after the game in recognition of his
achievement.
It was one highlight of many on
a night when the Ironmen were
functioning on all cylinders.
Every week weve gotten a little
better, Boo said. This was probably our most complete game so far.
We wanted to be as physical as we
could and try to run at them and
wear them down.

Kevins done a really good job

with their kids, he added. They
believe in what hes doing and they
play hard. Theyre greatly improved.
Defensively, the Iron Curtain
of the Ironmen allowed Harrington
to slip through for two long scores.
Aside from that, though, Boos
Boys did a better job of containing
the elusive senior than any other
opponent so far.
He got away a couple times but
we knew it was gonna happen,
Derrer said. We couldnt completely shut him down. All he
needs is a little crease and hell
make you pay.
Wilcox slashed, sliced and
slammed his way to a game-high
172 yards of real estate with TD
bursts of 10, 23 and 53 yards on his
stat line. Borst blasted and busted
his way to 119 yards with a TD and
Spires spun and sprinted to 50
yards and a pair of scores. Reserve
halfback Cole VanWagoner, a V.W.
that hums like a Ferrari, also tallied on a 14-yard gallop.
Hard-nosed senior linebacker
Luke Smash Mouth Smigielski
and Eric Wheeler each generated
six tackles. Boo was also pleased
with the way defensive backs Nick
Bevins, Jacob Allen and VanWagoner flowed to the football and defended against the quick-strike air
attack of the Snowbirds.
For St. Mary, Harrington was
held to under triple digits for the
first time. He amassed 120 positive
yards on 10 carries but he was
caught four times behind the line
of scrimmage by the relentless
Ironmen defense for 24 yards in
losses, giving him a net 96 yards on
the night. He did not play quarterback in the second half, giving way
to rangy senior Charles Strehl.
Harrington hit on 3-of-9 aerials
for 54 yards in the first half and the
strong-armed Strehl hit on 3-of-11
in the second half, including a 75yard bomb to Lochinski and a 25-
yarder to Harrington. Lochinski

pulled in three passes for 110 yards.
Defensively for the Snowbirds, it
was linebacker Cole Loffer leading
the team in tackles for the second
week in a row. Cobra-quick cornerback Adam Nowicki and Harrington from his safety post were also
very active defensively. OConnell
also commended Lochinski for his
work in the secondary.
St. Mary has JohannesburgLewiston coming to town this Friday for Homecoming [see separate
story in this issue on that game].
Mancelona travels south on 131
this Friday to resume the annual
rivalry with speedy Forest Area.
They run their offense pretty
well and have some playmakers,
Derrer said. They have (Justin)
Burke at receiver. They throw it up
to him and he goes up to get it. We
have to try and contain him.
When the Ironmen have the ball,
they need to avoid penalties and
turnovers, Boo said, and maintain
their blocks.

Chiefs forced to delay playoff clincher

Sault upends Cheboygan, 34-14

SAULT STE. MARIE There

are few guarantees in high school
football.
But heres one you can bank
on: Come Friday night, the
Cheboygan High School football
team will play with some kind of
fire.
Particularly this Friday night.
The Chiefs saw their four-game
win streak and their chance to
clinch a playoff berth spoiled a
week ago, when they fell at Sault
Ste. Marie, 34-14.
The loss left Cheboygan 5-2 and
one win away from wrapping up
a post-season berth for the second straight year and the 18th
time in school history.
The Chiefs go to Benzie Central on Friday, where they will
line up against a 1-6 team that

has been outscored 229-66 this
season. Cheboygan closes the
regular season the following
week at home against longtime
rival St. Ignace, 6-1, which
clinched a playoff spot last week
with a 40-6 victory over Pickford.
We just cannot look past Friday, Oct. 18, Cheboygan coach
Jack Coon said. Thats it. Were
playing for the second season. We
know we have some growth that
we can create and still develop.
Its been a fun group of kids to be
with. Theyve done some new
things this year that will allow us
to improve our program in the
years to come.
Were just disappointed in the
way we played (against the Sault)
and we have a chance at redemption Friday night.

The Chiefs scored on their

opening drive against the Sault,
but after that it was virtually all
Blue Devils.
Saults Raynell Anderson
rushed for 297 yards and three
touchdowns on 20 carries as the
Blue Devils scored 34 straight
points. Anderson scored on runs
of 60, 81 and 77 yards. The Sault
snapped its 12-game losing streak
to the Chiefs, and, in improving
to 4-3, kept alive its playoff hopes.
Most complete game weve
played, Sault coach Scott
Menard said.
They had a lot at stake, as
much as we did, Coon said.
They played a tremendous
game.
After scoring first Ben Pearson hit the end zone on a 6-yard
run and Austin Ginop added the
extra point the Chiefs sputtered
throughout the remainder of the
first half. Their final four possessions of the half ended in three
punts and a missed field goal,

One of the keys was (our) offense, Coon said. We didnt respond when (the Sault) scored.
As much as the Anderson kid
had some great runs, we had
some gap breakdowns in our defense and we didnt respond by
holding on to the ball and putting
points on the board.
We had some issues with
snaps, we had some issues with
missed blocking assignments.
Not taking away anything from
the Sault. They had a solid defensive line that put pressure on our
quarterback.
The Chiefs finished with 276
total yards, but just 108 of that
came on the ground. Nik Bevier
led Cheboygans ground game
with 85 yards on 15 carries, and
he scored a fourth-quarter TD on
a 1-yard plunge.
Cheboygan quarterback Luke
Harrington was 11-for-17 passing
for 168 yards. Pearson finished
with seven catches for 107 yards.

fense with 12 tackles, while

Colton Hudak and Trent Jarman
finished with nine stops apiece,
and Ginop posted seven tackles.
Hudak recorded a sack, and
Hunter Filice had an interception.
The loss left a bitter taste in
the Chiefs mouths, Coon said,
and Cheboygan is chomping at
the bit to take the field on Friday
against Benzie.
Theres a certain degree of
healing youve got to go through
after a disappointing loss and a
big football game, Coon said.
You can only celebrate for so
long when you win, and you can
only commiserate (a loss) for 24
hours. Youve got to get on with
things. We were disappointed in
the way that we performed. We
still have a season yet to play, a
season yet to make, and thats
what Benzie holds for us on Friday night.

JOHANNESBURG The Johannesburg-Lewiston Cardinals

one step closer to a 2013 playoff
berth with an impressive 32-14
Ski Valley South victory over explosive Onaway on Friday. J-L
used its stampeding ground game
to churn out 346 yards of rushing
real estate in the contest and an
aggressive, ball-hawking defense
to create scoring chances and
break open a close game in the
fourth quarter.
The host Cardinals improved to
5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Ski Valley South with their fourth
straight win. The visiting Cardinals of Onaway battled hard in
defeat as they slipped to 2-5 and 13.

Ethan May generated a combined
235 yards of rushing real estate
and four touchdowns in the game.
Hard-driving senior halfback Dillon Cushman battled and bashed
his way to 80 yards and Lights
Out Logan Huff launched himself for 24 yards on just three carries.
QB Brandon Huff engineered
the complex wing-T assault and
also hit on 2-of-4 aerials, firing 28
yards to tight end Coalton Huff
and 14 yards to junior Andrew
Gross.
Smokevitch was pleased with
his teams effort and especially
the way his players responded
after Onaway scored its second
touchdown. The visiting Cardinals had trimmed J-Ls lead to
just 20-14 in the third quarter
when senior signal caller Matt
Tollini, the master of improvisation in the pocket, scrambled
away from J-L pursuers long
enough to find Carlos Bautista in
the end zone for an electrifying
41-yard score. With 1:38 left in the

third quarter, the visitors had
trimmed the J-L lead to just six
points on what amounted to a
broken play.
The biggest thing is we didnt
get down on ourselves after we
gave up an easy score, Smokevitch reported. We got caught in
the trap of watching the game instead of playing and Tollini
burned us. After that, we regained our focus and the kids responded really well.
J-L scored two touchdowns in
the fourth quarter to finally decide the hard-fought contest.
Ethan May, who was electric all
game long, found a seam and
raced 47 yards with 11:17 remaining to make it a 26-14 game. Just a
minute later, Nick May pounded
the ball over for a 3-yard score to
push the lead to 32-14 and thats
how it stayed. Ethan finished the
night with 125 yards on 11 carries
and Nick powered his way to 110
yards on 19 tries.
Nicks final touchdown was set
up by junior inside linebacker
Andrew Gross, who jumped a
route and returned the purloined
pigskin inside the 5-yard line.
Brandon Huff and Coalton Huff
also had picks in the game for J-L
and defensive end Brad Kussrow
had a fumble recovery.
Smokevitch lauded the outstanding play of Ethan May at
cornerback and the freight-car ferocity of strong safety Coalton
Huff, who closes on ball carriers
like a guided missile. Smokevitch
again commended the aggressive
play and pursuit angles of defensive ends Dan Nieman and Kussrow.
Ive said it all along; Nieman
and Kussrow are the two best
ends in the league this year,
Smokevitch said. You cant get
around the edge against them
and you cant get inside them either. Theyre all over the place.

tackles with a sack and Kussrow
penetrated like an arrow fired
from a compound bow. Coalton
Huff added his own brand of
crash and smash, generating a
team-high 10 tackles with his
pick.
Nose guard Nathan Fox navigated his way to eight tackles and
active Ethan May made seven.
Kalin Leonard, Cam Nickert and
Logan Huff each had six.
For Onaway, the hard-battling
Bautista completed 8-of-13 for 93
yards and an 8-yard TD strike to
glue-fingered Tommy Auger. The

scrambling Tollini completed 5of-11 for 83 yards and the 34-yard
TD toss to Bautista.
Auger finished with five
catches for 43 yards, he also
rushed five times for 43 yards.
Jamaal Porter had two catches
for 48 yards, and Joe OBradovich
had two for 20.
Tollini covered the field like
fertilizer on defense, taking part
in a whopping 19 tackles, while
Chris Cleaver and Bautista had 11
each. Noah Bacon sizzled and
stormed to seven takedowns and
D.J. Fenstermaker also recorded

seven stops. Auger, Porter and
Frank Ramos finished with six
each.
Onaway plays host to Central
Lake (3-4, 2-2) in its homecoming
game on Friday. The Trojans still
have an outside shot at making
the playoffs as a 5-4 team and the
Cardinals are hoping to play
spoilers.
J-L travels to Gaylord to take
on St. Mary in the annual renewal of their gridiron rivalry.

Much is at stake for both teams as they play in Gaylord for St. Marys Homecoming

GAYLORD There doesnt

need to be any extra incentive for
the players of the St. Mary and
Johannesburg-Lewiston football
teams when they face each other
each October. The intense rivalry
between the two Otsego County
squads goes back a long way and
that alone is enough to get the
competitive juices flowing for
both sides.
This year there is much more
riding on the outcome than the
pride that comes from beating
the rival and owning bragging
rights for the next year, however.
The game this Friday, Oct. 18, in
Gaylord is rife with implications
in terms of playoff hopes and
playoff positioning.
St. Mary, which is also having
its Homecoming, owns a 3-4
record overall and 1-3 in the Ski
Valley South. J-L has a 5-2 record
going into the contest and 3-1 in
the conference.
St. Mary HAS to win to have a
shot at making the playoffs as a 54 team. And, if the Snowbirds of
first-year head coach Kevin OConnell do manage to pull off the
upset over Johannesburg and
then outscore Kingsley in nonleague action in week nine,
theres no doubt they will be in
the Division 8 playoffs.
The Cardinals of Joe Smokevitch, the longtime J-L assistant
who is in his first season as the
head coach, need to beat the
Snowbirds to have a realistic
shot at hosting at least one playoff game. If J-L can outscore the
Snowbirds on Friday and then
defeat Pellston in week nine,
theres a decent chance of being
the home team in the opening
round of the Division 8 playoffs
and possibly in the second round.
Both coaches are expecting a
tough fight in a big-game setting
with lots of fans filling the
bleachers.
Itll be a great atmosphere,
OConnell said. Its a backyard
rivalry and both teams want it

really bad. We have to win out to
have a shot at the playoffs so our
postseason begins this week.
Were gonna attack and be very
aggressive.
Smokevitch is relying on his
seniors to keep the rest of the
players from getting caught up in
the rivalry aspect and not focusing on their assignments.
In one sense, this is a huge rivalry game for us and for them
and its something the kids look
forward to every year, Smokevitch said. Itll be a big crowd
over there and lots of excitement
in the air. In another sense, we
have to treat it like any other
game and not get caught up in all
the hype and the atmosphere.
Our seniors have been
through this before and we need
them to be leaders on the field
and keep our younger kids in
check, he added. We have to
come out and play football, not

get caught watching the game.
We need to keep our heads and
stay on an even keel.
The run-oriented Cardinals are
coming off three straight impressive victories over quality foes
and appear to be approaching
their peak as the playoffs loom.
This past Friday, the Cardinals
outscored visiting Onaway 32-14.
The week before that, they rampaged past Rudyard 36-14 and the
week before that they won at
Central Lake 30-12.
The quick-strike, full-throttle
Snowbirds posted their most impressive victory of the season in
week six, a 41-20 thumping of visiting non-league foe Ubly. This
past Friday, though, they traveled
to the field of three-time defending conference champion
Mancelona and the power-driven
Ironmen forged a 59-14 triumph
in a game in which OConnell acknowledged we got taken to the
woodshed.
Recent history in the rivarly is
on the side of the Cardinals.
They have won the past four
games, all by lopsided scores. In
2012, J-L won 56-6. The last time
St. Mary won was in 2008, a 27-20
decision at home. That game
capped a stretch starting in 1999
in which the Snowbirds had won
nine out of 10 from their crosscounty rivals.
Another motivation this year
for St. Mary is that the seniors on
the roster have never beaten the
Cardinals in their collective careers. This is their last chance.
Another motivation for both
teams is that OConnell and
Smokevitch are both in their
first year as head coach and the
players on each side would LOVE
to enable their coach to walk off
the field as a winner.
For J-L, the biggest key to victory is to control the line of
scrimmage. Smokevitch has challenged linemen Dominic Vogt,
Nathan Fox, Brad Kussrow,
Trevor Pickelmann and Kalin
Leonard and tight ends Coalton

win over Onaway, with Ethan
slipping, sliding and slashing his
way to 124 yards rushing and
Nick bashing and busting his
way to 110 yards. Nick and Ethan
each scored twice.
The biggest challenge for J-L
defensively is trying to contain
the Human Hurricane, elusive
senior QB Nick Harrington. He
has been a big-play machine all
season long.
We know Harringtons gonna

get his plays but we have to limit
the big scoring plays, Smokevitch said. Harringtons the
MVP of the Ski Valley South.
Hes got great instincts and great
moves. We have to use our speed
to track him down and prevent
him from going 60 or 70 yards at
a time.
OConnell admits hes pulling
all the stops on both sides of the
ball for this one.
Were throwing everything we
have at them, he said. Everything we do offensively will be on
display. Were gonna run and
were gonna pass and if we could
fly, wed do that, too. The biggest
thing for us is we need to block
well.
Harrington is the Snowbirds
most electric weapon but hes not
the only cannon in the arsenal
for OConnell. Rangy Charles
Strehl and speedy Jack Lochinski are big-play receivers and
senior halfback Anders Marquard can grind it out for a few
yards between the tackles or
break it out around the perimeter.
The biggest challenge for St.
Mary will be on defense. The
Snowbirds must keep the Cardinals from maintaining their
long, yard-munching, time-chewing drives.
They have an offensive
scheme that works and we have
to attack it, OConnell said.
They run the fullback trap and
the jet series really well. We
know what theyre gonna do and
we have to be aggressive and
physical to stop it. We have to
trust our keys and play downhill.
OConnell said an upset over JL would be an enormous boost to
the Snowbird program and a
great injection of confidence for
the kids.
At 7 oclock on Friday night
we have to strap it up and bang
heads, he said. Itll be a very
physical game.

Mallory, Flowers churn up turf in
Bulldogs win at Pellston; JV Ironmen

PELLSTON Next on the

agenda? A playoff berth.
Trevor Mallory rushed for 101
yards and scored two touchdowns, and Daniel Flowers
scored three times as Inland
Lakes rolled to the Ski Valley
Conference North Division win
at Pellstons McClutchey Field.
It was Inland Lakes third
straight win, and the Bulldogs
improved to 5-2 and can clinch
their first playoff berth since
2009 with a home win on Friday
against Mesick, 0-7. The Bulldogs
close the regular season at
Mancelona, 5-2, on Friday, Oct. 25,
in a much-anticipated showdown.
The Bulldogs, who reached the
60-point plateau for the first time
since a 62-6 win over Mancelona
in 2004, jumped to a 30-0 firstquarter lead on the Hornets and
held a commanding 46-0 advantage at halftime.
We talked about it all week
long that if we thought we were a
good football team we needed to
come out focused and ready to
play, Inland Lakes coach Stan
Schramm said. And I thought
our boys did. I was really pleased

with the way our boys came out
and took care of business right
off the bat. Our offense was humming.
Flowers got things started
when he scored on a 72-yard punt
return early in the first quarter.
He finished with 88 yards rushing as Inland Lakes rolled up 403
yards of offense, all on the
ground. Nine different Bulldogs
carried the ball on the night.
Quarterback Todd Athey added
68 yards, Christian Wallace had
42 yards and scored twice, and
Ethan Jankoviak also scored at
TD. Jankoviak was one of several
sophomores who dressed for the
game because Pellston does not
field a junior varsity team.
It was the fifth consecutive loss
for the Hornets, 1-5, who have
been shut out in four straight
starts. Pellston plays its Ski Valley North finale at St. Ignace on
Friday. If the Saints win, they
capture the division championship. If Pellston wins, St.
Ignace and Inland Lakes share
the title.
Mallory led Inland Lakes defense with nine tackles, Nick
Parker added six, and Ryan Howery made five stops. Mallory and
Parker each recorded a sack.
Schramm said Howery, in particular, was a standout.
We moved him from defensive
end to defensive tackle a few
games ago, he said of the sophomore. He does a nice job.
Now the Bulldogs turn their attention to Mesick, which has
gone winless against a difficult

schedule in the Northwest Conference. Mesick has been
outscored, 263-39, in its seven
games.
The big concern for me and
the coaching staff is to make sure
theyre ready to play football on
Friday, Schramm said Our boys
have got to understand that weve
got to come out and be focused
and ready to play football. Thats
our main concern. That and that
were continuing to get better.
Weve improved as the years
gone on. Were a much more
physical football team than we
were three games ago, four
games ago.
Thats our big focal point, and
(Mesick) is the team thats standing in the way of getting an automatic (playoff) bid, and thats
very important to this team. I
think they will be ready to play.
JV: Mancelona 30, Reed City

REED CITY The Mancelona
JV Ironmen of coach Doug Derrer were scheduled to face Hillman but that game got cancelled,
so AD Dave Smith was able to
arrange a game with Class B
Reed City for Thursday, Oct. 10.
The young Ironmen played the
larger school and won, 30-24.
Coach Derrer credited the Dark
Wall of Defiance up front with
playing a major role in the victory.
The offensive line of Nick
Biehl, Joe Grenke, Tim Campeau,
Jake Campeau, Shane Young,
Dylan Whitney and Logan Short

did a nice job of opening up the
running lanes for our backs, the
coach reported.
Reed City took an 8-0 on the
final play of the first quarter but
the young Ironmen came flying
back, literally, when fleet-footed
Chris Neon Nielson motored 65
yards on the ensuing kickoff.
Tyler Fults flew around end for
the two points and an 8-8 tie.
Reed City regained the lead in
the thrilling, seesaw battle at the
3:42 mark of the third quarter on
a 75-yard run. That put the Coyotes on top 16-8.
Mancelona received the kickoff
and went into two-minute
mode as signal caller Dylan Derrer mixed the run and the pass
masterfully. With 24 seconds remaining, Dylan faked into the
line and delivered a strike to
Nick Biehl to trim the lead to 1614.
Early in the third quarter, the
host Coyotes scored again to
make it a 10-point game, 24-14, but
the Ironmen did all the rest of
the scoring in the incredible
game.
Nielson lowered his head and
powered his way over from 2
yards to cap a long drive and then
Dylan tossed to Nielson for the
conversion to trim the deficit to
24-22.
In the fourth quarter, the Coyotes were suddenly afflicted with
Ty-Fu Fever, a malady that usually catches up to Mancelona opponents sometime during the
game. Fults flying feet carried
him to a 3-yard tally to put his

team on top 28-24. Fults then
found his way across the goal-line
for two points to make it 30-24
with 10:21 left to play.
The dangerous Coyotes were
driving down the field for what
could have been the game-tying
or game-winning drive in the
final minute when Neon Nielson came up with another huge
play, intercepting a fourth-down
pass at the 3-yard line.
The offense then came on the
field and pushed forward behind
the Dark Wall of Defiance for the
first down that was needed to run
out the clock and enable the Ironmen to walk off the field as victors.
The Iron Trio of C.J. Short,
Neon Nielson, and Ty-Fu Fults
in the backfield ran to the tune of
thunder once again. Fults fired
out for a team-high 90 yards in 19
carries. Shorts sonic sieges with
the ball accumulated 77 yards of
real estate in 20 tries and Nielson
put the Deuce Moves on to generate 49 yards in 13 carries to go
with his kickoff return for a TD
and his timely interception at the
shadow of the goal-line.
Dylan hit on 4-of-6 aerials for 32
yards, including the TD strike to
tight end Nick Biehl.
On the defensive side, C.J.
Short laid siege to enemy ball
carriers, making 11 tackles in the
win. Fults put the halt on runs
six times with a fumble recovery.
Luke Winstead and Nielson each
had four stops and Nielson had
the fourth-quarter pick.

was going to be until we
got him out there because
he had never played quarterback. We could see he
was an athlete and he had
a pretty good arm. Coach
(Mark) Ameel has done a
good job of working with
him and improving his
mechanics.
Hes like a sponge. He
really picked it up fast.
The next step is getting in
a huddle and being in that
situation. You just dont
know how theyre going
to respond.
Answer: Pretty darned
good.
Granted, the 6-foot-2,
175-pound Whitmore has
had his share of ups and
downs just as any sophomore signal-caller likely
would. But the quarterbacks continual improvement has run parallel to
that of the Northmen in
general.

Whitmore connected with

That put Petoskey up,
21-7. Three minutes later,

The TD pass to Ledingham was indicative of
how Petoskeys quarterback has matured
through the season,
VanOrman said.
He was patient enough
to let it develop and not
throw it early, he said. I
think thats what impresses me is that he has
the poise to wait until it
develops. And I think
that he also has shown
good decision-making in
not throwing balls where
guys are covered, which
is really hard for a young
guy to do. If a guys covered, he goes to his next
receiver. That instinct, in
somebody so young to be
able to do that, is really
rare to see. Thats something that usually takes
them until theyre a senior to pick up.
Were through seven
games now and you can
see him really develop in
the huddle and really understand the offense and
what were trying to do
and even help guys in the
huddle.
The Brothers Whitmore
connected again midway
through the third quarter,
this time on a 55-yard TD
pass play which made it
35-7. Shea Whitmore finished with three catches
for 133 yards, while Ledingham led Petoskeys

ground game with 115
yards and a touchdown on
24 carries.
Petoskey finished with
197 yards rushing, and its
170 through the air is a remarkable balance for a
team that has relied almost exclusively on the
run to much success
for the past decade.
Petoskeys other two
TDs came from Kurt
Boucher on a 1-yard run,
and by Garret
Lundteigen, who pounced
on a blocked Gaylord punt
in the end zone.
It was one of two
blocked punts Ledingham had one, James
Gazarato the other by
the Northmen on the
night.
Twice, the Blue Devils
long snap sailed over the
punters head, and
Petoskey intercepted Gaylord quarterback Steven
Fitzek twice. Aaron Broman and Shae Whitmore
had the picks.
You just cant make
mistakes against good
teams, Gaylord coach
Will Cleaver said.
Theyll take advantage
of it and thats what
Petoskey did. Theyre
well coached and
Petoskey did a nice job
both offensively and de-
fensively. We had some

pretty good success
against the run and they
just popped those passes
which we hadnt really
seen (in scouting reports).
Weve got to adjust and we
didnt defensively.
Fitzek completed 7-of-21
pass attempts for 117
yards. He connected with
Lance Chapman on a 66yard TD pass play midway through the second
quarter, a play that gave
the Blue Devils life as
they cut the Northmen
lead to 14-7. Nick Parker
scored on a 1-yard plunge
in the fourth quarter for
the Blue Devils, who were
limited to 96 yards on the
ground. Fitzek was Gaylords top ground gainer
with 41 yards on nine attempts.
The win keeps Petoskey
squarely in the hunt for a
playoff spot, a position
with which it is familiar.
A year ago, the Northmen
were also 4-3 and needed
to win its final two regular-season games to make

the post-season. They
dropped their finale to
Menominee and missed
the playoffs.
The last two weeks
weve grown a little bit as
a football team since that
(9-6) loss to Cheboygan,
said VanOrman, whose
team defeated Traverse
City Central, 42-37, a week
before the win over Gaylord. Theyve played two
games of pretty good football. Theres a confidence
that definitely comes with
that. Its a good sign that
these kids still believe
that they can win these
two games and get in the
playoffs. Thats definitely
a motivation for them.
Weve talked about
Gaylord. Theyre not that
bad of a football team.
Theyre going through
growing pains and you
can see that. Theyre wellcoached. Its just a matter
of time before theyre
playing right back on top
too. I felt it was a good
win for our kids. And this
week well be trying to
keep that focus.
The Blue Devils are on
the long road back to respectability under
Cleaver, who led them on
a tremendous eight-year
stretch before stepping
away after the 2007 season.
Were still trying to
find a way to win,
Cleaver said. Its not that
were done with the seniors or were moving on,
and its certainly not because were giving up on
the kids weve got. Its
more were trying to find
the right pieces to the
puzzle to make it work for
us to be able to have a
fighting chance on Friday
with Traverse City West.
Theyre good, theyre
well coached, theyre
physical, theyre fast. All
the things that we would
dream of being, they are.
We certainly have our
work cut out for us. They
do a lot of things well.
They come after you on
defense and theyre going
to blitz us all night.

to bracket finals

SUTTONS BAY The Pellston volleyball team of

coach Brooke Groff reached
the finals of the Copper
Bronze bracket against
rugged Suttons Bay tournament on Saturday. The Hornets lost to Rogers City 25-15,
25-18 to finish 3-3 on the day.
Pellston lost to Houghton
Lake 26-24, 25-23 in a tense
battle to open pool play and
then lost another tough
three-game match with
Kingsley, 25-20, 23-25, 15-9 before beating Northport 25-8,
25-18 and advancing to
bracket play.
In the bracket, the Hornets edged Traverse City
Christian in still another
hard-fought, to-the-wire affair, 22-25, 25-22, 16-14, in the
first round before hammering out a 25-10, 25-20 victory
over Grand Traverse Academy in the second round.
At the end of the day, Pellstons solid record stood at
22-14 overall against some
very stiff competition and 51 in the Ski Valley.

It was the usual names
leading the way for Brookes
blue-collar battlers.
Mackenzie Wright, who
was exhibited the Wright
Stuff all season long, put
the mighty Mac Whack on
a team-high 51 kills with
three blocks and was all over
the place in the back row,
too, notching 30 digs. Shock
Wave Shaylee Smith showered the enemy side with 39
kills and she was big into rejection again, making 13
blocks. Shaylee added some
serious steam at the stripe,
too, earning eight aces.
Abbie Welch (28 kills) and
Sammie Stark (18 kills)
added to the Hornet hit parade along with Olivia Grant
(eight kills, four blocks) and
Breanna Sisman (six kills).
Abbie covered the floor like
wet on water, notching 38
digs.
Versatile Hanah Carter
created more hitting
chances than a pitching machine, serving up 107 assists
to go with nine aces, 31 digs
and four kills.
Kelly Lewis secured 29
digs and launched 10 aces to
help the Hornet cause and
Cassidy Thayer put the
crash on a pair of kills.

blasted out of pool play and
reached the semifinals of
the Harbor Springs tournament on Saturday. The
young Hornet hitters
dropped a tough decision to
talented Boyne City, 25-18,
25-10.
Setter Kaylee Krussell
was cool under fire as she

put the K-2 brand on her deliveries, notching 30 assists

on the day. Sweet-swinging
Susie Brilley also had a
dilly of a day once again,
smashing out a team-high
16 kills with 91 percent efficiency in her attacks and
also delivering four aces
from the stripe. It was
Krunch Time for Stephanie
Kruskie and Haley Keber as
they each connected for
nine kills. Elyssa Prell
flowed like liquid gold at the
net, pounding out eight kills
and making three blocks.
Kruskie was trusty at the
stripe also, launching a
dozen aces and accumulating a whopping 38 points as
a server. Kruskie, Prell and
Brilley were the top passers
on the day.

Take precautions when
hunting deer from tree
stand or elevated platorm
As hunters head to the woods
for the archery deer season,
Michigan conservation officers
are stressing safety for those
hunting from tree stands or elevated platforms.
Tree stands are popular with
many hunters who want an increased advantage, but improper
use of them can result in injuries and death, said Sgt. Tom
Wanless, Hunter Education Program supervisor for the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources. We always stress
safety when using a tree stand or
raised platform.
The important things to remember when using a tree stand
for hunting are:
* Buy a safe and comfortable

stand and harness thats right
for you. Safe and reliable equipment reduces your chance of injury.
* Carefully read all instructions and warnings provided
with your stand.
* Practice setting up your
stand and safety equipment at
ground level first. Use all recommended safety straps and pins to
secure the stand.
* Wear the safety harness at all
times when climbing, hunting
and descending.
* Choose a harness with a
quick-release system that will
hold you right-side-up and not restrict your breathing should you
fall.
* Maintain your equipment
look for wear, stress points and
loose fasteners. Fix or replace
worn equipment immediately.
* Choose as straight a tree as
possible, and watch for dead,
overhanging limbs and rotten
wood.
* Use extra care when hunting
from a smooth-barked tree (such
as aspen, maple, hickory and
beech) because if it rains, they
get slippery.
* Use extra care when hunting
from a frozen tree. Avoid using
elevated stands when its icy.
* Always use a haul rope to
bring gear, firearm or bow to and
from the ground.
* Always unload your gun before hauling.
* If hauling a bow, tie your line
to the top limb of the bow when
climbing and the bottom when
descending to avoid snagging arrows in tree branches.
* Be extra alert when climbing
or descending from the stand.
These are when most tree-stand
accidents occur.

GRAYLING The Grayling
Vikings punched their ticket the
state football playoffs Friday, Oct.
11. But, the home team needed a
furious second-half comeback to
do it, rallying for a 35-18 win over
visiting Lake Michigan Conference rival Kalkaska.
Grayling (6-1 overall, 4-0 conference) found itself on a wrong side
of an 18-14 halftime score, as the
visiting Blue Blazers (5-2 overall,
3-2 conference) dominated action
late in the half and outscored
Grayling, 12-0, in the second

of intermission and scored 21

Kalkaska off the scoreboard, to
rally for their sixth win, which
puts Grayling in line for a state

playoff berth.
We knew Kalkaska was a good
football team with a lot of good
athletes, said Grayling head
coach Tim Sanchez. I was proud
of how our guys stuck to the plan
and were about to outlast (Kalkaska) in the second half.
Swander again proved to be the
straw that stirs the Grayling offense, completing 60 percent (21of-32) of his throws for 288 yards,
2 touchdowns and 1 interception.
Both of his TD throws went to
senior receiver Tyler McClanahan, who hauled in 9 of Swanders passes for 146 yards.
Senior Brandon Latusek added
half a dozen receptions for 99
yards, while classmate Michael
Branch had 3 catches for 21

However, the Grayling attack
was anything but one-sided. The
Vikings carried the ball across
the goal line for three scores, including TD runs each by Harris
(8 carries, team-high 51 yards),
Branch (11 carries, 47 yards) and
Swander (1 carry, 2 yards) on his
only rushing attempt of the
game.
Other Viking rushers included
sophomore Nick Petrie (2 carries,
12 yards) and Latusek (1 carry, 11
yards). And, overall, Grayling
Mio-auSable 55, auSgreS-SiMS 9
rushed for 123 yards against a

solid Kalkaska defense and
racked up 411 yards in total offense.
Petrie turned in a better stat
line on the defensive side of the
ball, racking up a team-best 11
tackles and 2 sacks. Junior Darin
Nicholas added 7 tackles, including 2 for a loss, while Branch
chipped in with 3 sacks.
Besides earning Grayling a
playoff bid, last Fridays win also
keeps the Vikings chances at a
LMC crown alive and well.
Grayling, one of two teams still
undefeated in LMC action, travels

to East Jordan on Friday, Oct. 18,
to face the Red Devils (4-3 overall,
1-3). If Grayling wins there, that
could set up a battle between the
LMCs top two squads on Friday,
Oct. 23, when the Vikings host
Boyne City (6-1 overall, 4-0 conference) in a regular-season finale.
Kickoffs for both games are set

MIO Last Fridays football game at Mio-AuSable
High School was what
sports pundits call a nodoubter.
The host Mio Thunderbolts just crushed Au GresSims, 55-0, on Friday, Oct.
11, to claim the varsity
teams sixth consecutive
victory and a ticket to the
state football playoffs.
The Thunderbolts (6-1
overall, 3-0 conference)
simply ran away from Au
Gres-Sims, scoring in double-digits in the first three
quarters, while also shutting out the visiting
Wolverines (1-6 overall, 1-4
conference).
Mio scored 15 and 19
points in the first and second quarters, respectively,
on its way to a 34-0 halftime lead and then tacked
on 14 points in the third
quarter. The final stanza
might have seemed like a
letdown, with the Bolts
only putting up 7 points on
the scoreboard.
And, the Bolts did it
with a balanced offensive
attack that totaled 562
yards.
Senior quarterback Brad
Rhoads helped account for
a lot of that yardage, completing 11-of-17 (65 percent)
of his passing attempts for
328 yards, 4 touchdowns
and 2 interceptions.
Rhoads also rushed for 34
yards on 4 carries and was
5-of-6 on PATs.
Senior Bryson Devers, a
leader on both sides of the
ball, caught two of
Rhoads TD throws and
rushed for another score.
In the win, Devers pulled
down 4 catches overall for
62 yards and then led Mio
in rushing with 68 yards
on 7 carries.
Seniors Seth Thomey (3
catches, 98 yards) and
Chaun Obermiller (1
catch, 52 yards) also had
TD receptions on throws
from Rhoads, while classmate Colton McGregor had
a team-high 106 yards on 4
receptions. Junior Josh
Fox had 1 catch for 10
yards.
Mio was equally effective rushing the ball, with
seven players carry the
rock and account for another 4 TDs. That included
carries by Devers, Rhoads,
Obermiller (1 carry, 35
yards), Thomey (1 carry, 3
yards), Zac Price (4 carries, 34 yards), Brian Watson (3 carries, 13 yards)
and Cody Wilson (1 carry,
47 yards).
It was also a team effort
on defense, with 17 players
tallying at least one tackle
in the shutout victory.
And, a trio of familiar
names Devers, Thomey
and Obermiller to Mio
fans again led the charge.
Devers recorded a teambest 14 tackles, including 8
solo hits, while Thomey
had 13 tackles, with 7 of
those being of the solo variety. But, in a way,
Thomeys night defensively might have been
even more impressive, as
11 of his 12 tackles were
solo hits.
Other defensive standouts for the Bolts included

Taurus was the first car in
Fords North American lineup
to offer the advanced 2.0-liter
EcoBoost engine. Ideal for fullsize sedan buyers seeking maximum fuel economy without
sacrificing performance, this advanced engine combines direct
injection of gasoline and a turbocharger to provide performance comparable to naturally
aspirated V6 engines offered by
competitors. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost delivers 240 horsepower
and 270 lb.-ft. of torque while returning highway fuel economy
of 32 mpg.
A relatively high compression
ratio is enabled by the use of direct injection of gasoline, operating at fuel pressures from
2,200 to 2,800 psi. The unique
turbocharger is optimally
matched to the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine and direct injection system, providing precise
fuel pressure control to deliver
boosted power at low rpm without annoying turbo lag.
The 2.0-liter EcoBoost uses
5W30 oil to reduce internal friction, and enables 10,000-mile oil
change intervals, representing a
potential reduction in cost of
ownership. In addition, fuel
economy is optimized with a
low-tension accessory drive belt

and a one-way alternator clutch.
The 3.5-liter V6 is offered as
standard equipment in Taurus
SE, SEL and Limited series
models. This Taurus engine
benefits from the addition of
twin independent variable
camshaft timing, achieving better fuel economy, additional
horsepower and a reduction in
part-throttle emissions compared to the previous standard
Taurus V6. The new engine returns a 3 mpg highway fuel
economy increase, with 10 percent more horsepower.
The engine has been engineered for durability with
chain-driven camshafts, highstrength forged metal connecting rods with floating pins, a
fully counterweighted forged
steel crankshaft, die-cast aluminum deep-sump oil pan and
four-bolt main bearing caps
with side bolts through the engine block. Noise, vibration and
harshness characteristics are
controlled and reduced through
employment of a tuned composite upper and lower manifold, a
silent-chain camshaft drive and
an acoustic engine cover.

standard equipment in the highperformance Taurus SHO is

Home shopping for first-time

If youre like others in the market
for their first home, you probably
have in mind exactly how your
soon-to-be home will look.
But its important not to fall
into the bad decorating, dingy
walls and dirt-bare back yard
equals bad-home trap. If you

afford to offer for a house. Dont
look at homes that are asking for
more than 5 percent above your
maximum, otherwise youll be
setting yourself up for disappointment if you find the perfectbut outside your
budgethome.
So what to do?
The floor plan of the home is
extremely important. If a floor
plan isnt quite to your liking,
consider rearranging it or adding
on. If youre looking at an existing home and will need to remodel or expand to suit your
needs, the estimated cost of renovation needs to be considered

Walls. While these are among

make a huge first impression. If
the walls need to be painted, are
covered in wallpaper or are
painted a color you find distasteful, picture them crisp and clean
in the color of your choice
thats how they could look after
you paint them.
Floors. Like walls, carpet or
floor surfaces that are old or outdated can be easily replaced. You
could even ask for a carpet allowance in your bid, especially if
youre in a buyers market.
View. Things like old, ugly
even dirtywindows and window
treatments can make a view appear less desirable. Those things
can be improved, so unless the
only view you have is of your
neighbors clunker on the side of
the house, dont get hung up on
what is surely a fixable view.
