Course Syllabus

Course Description: This course continues the exploration of theatre arts with a more detailed study of theatre vocabulary, reading and writing of theatre literature, acting and technical theatre. Students critique their own work and that of other students as well as that generated throughout history by various cultures. Study continues in the concepts of self, body and voice work, improvisation and acting techniques through informal and formal productions. Students add to their portfolio or collection of work and related activities. Textbooks: TheatreArt in Action, Lisa Abel, ditor, ! "###, $ational Textbook %ompany, Lincolnwood, &llinois. Supplies: Notebook: Students 6'ST have a standard three/ring binder that is used solely for this course, ideally with a presentation/style clear plastic cover 7like the sample shown in class8. The notebook should have at least 39 diameter rings. $otebooks help students stay neat and organi:ed and provide a place to keep reference materials. $otebooks should be brought to class every day and will be periodically graded. Dividers: Students will also need these ten tabbed dividers to organi:e their course materials0 (andouts +ournals Scripts ;ocabulary >ro?ects %haracter @evelopment <eview =uestions 6onologues $otes Scenes Paper: Students should have standard college/ruled paper in their notebooks for written assignments. riting: Students should use black ink pens or black lead A3 pencils for all informal written assignments. Bormal assignments should be typed according to the guidelines provided with each pro?ect. !ighlighters: Bor this class, students should C$LD use a yellow highlighter. ournals: "e#lection $ournals: Students will be keeping a ?ournal of their personal experiences in this class. <eflection ?ournaling takes place during the first few minutes of class each day. Students will find a question or instructions posted to which they will respond in writing in their ?ournals. +ournals should be brought to class each day. ntries are to be dated and should follow the format discussed in class. <eflection ?ournals are to be written on regular notebook paper and will be collected at least once each week. Erades are based on how well the ideas are put into words, grasp of meaning, use of application and illustration, as well as neatness, consistency and meeting the minimum length requirements. ,hen absent, entries will need to be made up. &f students miss a class for any reason it is the students responsibility to make up the ?ournal for that day and turn in completed ?ournals on time. Character Development $ournals: ,hen working on acting assignments, students will create and maintain ?ournal reflections on the character development process as explained in class. !o"e#ork: &n a Theatre Arts class, homework may take on many forms. Cften it may be a traditional type assignment of reading material and responding to exercises. &t may also involve work that does not involve writing things on paper. Students may be required to review lines they are memori:ing or rehearse specific movement and stage blocking. (omework is to be kept in the course notebook and will be graded as part of the daily grading. $ocabulary: 'nderstanding theatre requires students to have a working familiarity with the terms used in the theatre industry. There will be weekly vocabulary assignments that go along with each weekFs work. To be successful students must stay current in these assignments. %"ore&

'articipation ( 'er)or"ances: The study of theatre requires hands/on interactive participation with both in/class exercises and creative assignments. Students are expected to act in front of the class and in front of a public audience. Also, students are expected to actively participate in all small group and full class activities and discussions as assigned. Students will complete two formal performances each six weeks. Criti*ues: Students are required to see three live theatrical productions, including shows produced at the school and those produced by groups not connected with our school (for example: other schools, The Little Theater of Gastonia, Belmont A e! "ollege, touring sho#s, etc$%$ Students will be required to turn in a program from each production, and to write typed one/page 7or more8 reports on their experience. Scripts: Students will read and be able to discuss and answer questions about seven plays. Two will be read in class, the others as homework. ". The Lotter! 7a short one/act play8 4. ". +istor! of Broa,#a!: xplore and analy:e the development of American theatre at its hub in $ew Dork %ity from the nineteenth to the twenty/first centuries. 3. Re#riting Romeo an, -uliet: ,orking independently and in small groups, students explore the timeless qualities of one of ShakespeareFs most endearing plays. Students research historical evidence and cultural trends to update a scene from the original li:abethan text to fit appropriately into one of four given periods from American history. *. Technical Pro,uction Pro.ect0 Students work with a given script to develop design concepts and ideas for sets, costumes, lighting, sound and propsI and some will then be more fully developed. 'ro,uction Cre# -ab: Students are expected to complete at least ten 7"28 hours of lab work on a production crew outsi,e of class hours and not including any time spent in acting rehearsals. %rew work must be documented following instructions given in class.
