African Journalists Protest Court Decision against

Gambian Journalists as “Heavy Violations” of
Fundamental Rights
The Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), the African Regional Organization of the
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), resoundingly protests today’s court ruling against
leaders of Gambia Press Union (GPU) and three journalists as “heavy violations of freedom
of the press and trade union rights in the Gambia ”.

According to Gambia Press Union, a FAJ affiliate, the three GPU leaders, namely, Emil
Touray, GPU Secretary General; Sarata Jabbi Dibba, GPU Vice President and Pa Modou Faal,
GPU Treasurer along with Pap Saine, Ebou Sawaneh, The Point’s publisher and editor
respectively; and Sam Sarr, Editor of Foroyaa newspaper have been convicted on all six
counts of sedition and defamation and were today sent to Mile Two State Central Prisons.

“This court decision demonstrates the lack of respect for freedom of the press and freedom of
association in the Gambia . We demand the total and immediate release of our six (6)
colleagues and respect for fundamental rights in The Gambia”, said Omar Faruk Osman, FAJ
President.

FAJ said this verdict is undoubtedly politicized and an unfair judgment. Gambian courts are
not independent. The judicial system is subject to political interference. Today’s verdict was
designed to send a message to those who dare to stand up for fundamental human rights.

“The Gambian regime has been waging a systematic State repression and injustice against
Gambian journalists, which is unacceptable because Gambian journalists are trying to fight
for press freedom, freedom of expression and fair working and living conditions,” Omar
Faruk declared.

The seven journalists have been convicted of all six counts and sentenced to two years
imprisonment, and fined each 500,000 Dalasis (about US$20,000).

“GPU, its leaders and members are evidently the victims of their outspokenness and
journalistic as well as trade union activities. FAJ expresses full support and first class
solidarity with the Gambia Press Union and its members”.

“The FAJ in conjunction with world journalists’ organization, IFJ, and trade union movement
as well as the free press community will continue its campaign in support of our Gambian
brothers and sisters until they are fully allowed their freedoms and rights, namely the right to
free expression, freedom of association and the right to protect and promote needs and
interests,” Omar Faruk affirmed.

Les journalistes africains protestent contre la

décision de la Cour comme une violation grave des
droits fondamentaux des journalistes gambiens
La Fédération Africaine des Journalistes (FAJ), l'organisation régionale africaine de la
Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ), proteste de façon unanime contre la décision
de la Cour d'aujourd'hui contre des responsables du syndicat des journalistes de la Gambie
(GPU) et de trois journalistes comme étant « des violations graves de la liberté de la presse et
de la liberté syndicale en Gambie ».

Selon le syndicat des journalistes de la Gambie , affilié à la FAJ , les trois responsables de
GPU, notamment Emil Touray, Secrétaire général ; Sarata Jabbi Dibba, Vice-présidente et Pa
Modou Faal, trésorier, ainsi que Pap Saine, Ebou Sawaneh, respectivement Directeur de
publication et rédacteur en chef du journal the Point ; et Sam Sarr, rédacteur en chef du
journal Foroyaa ayant été condamnés sur chacun des six chefs d’accusation de sédition et de
diffamation ont été envoyés ce jour même à la prison centrale de Mile Two à Banjul la
capitale.

« Cette décision du Tribunal démontre le manque de respect pour la liberté de la presse et la

liberté d'association en Gambie. Nous exigeons la libération immédiate et sans condition de
nos six (6) collègues pour le respect des droits fondamentaux en Gambie », a indiqué Omar
Faruk Osman, président de la FAJ.

Selon la FAJ , ce verdict est purement politique et un jugement injuste. La justice gambienne
n’est pas indépendante. Le système judiciaire est influencé par le pouvoir exécutif. Ce verdict
est un message envoyé à ceux qui osent défendre les droits fondamentaux.

«La répression systématique par le régime est une injustice inacceptable parce que les
journalistes gambiens, n’on fait que lutter pour la liberté de la presse, la liberté d’expression et
l’amélioration des conditions de travail et d’existence » a ajouté Omar Faruk.

Les sept journalistes ont été tous reconnus coupables des six chefs d’accusation et condamné
à deux ans d'emprisonnement fermes assortis d’une amende de 500.000 dalasis (environ US$
20,000) chacun.

« Le GPU, ses responsables et membres ont évidemment été victimes de leur honnêteté et de
leurs activités journalistiques et syndicales. La FAJ exprime toute sa solidarité et son appui
sans faille au syndicat et à ses membres».

« La FAJ en collaboration avec la Fédération Internationale des journalistes (FIJ), le

mouvement syndical et la communauté de la presse libre, continuera sa campagne d'appui à
nos frères et sœurs gambiens jusqu'à ce qu’ils recouvrent entièrement leurs droits et libertés,
particulièrement la liberté d’expression, la liberté d’association et la sauvegarde de leurs
intérêts matériels et moraux » a affirmé Omar Faruk.
