IFJ Condemns Jail Sentence on Gambia Journalists

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today condemned the conviction of six
Gambian journalists to two year jail sentence and US$ 20,000 fine each for having criticised
President Yahya Jammeh.

"This is one of the darkest days in the history of African journalism. The harsh sentences
pronounced today by justice Fagbenle fly in the face of all the constitutional guarantees and
the principles of press freedom and natural justice. Our Gambian colleagues were right to
have no faith in the Gambian judicial system which has proved to be spineless and a faithful
servant of president Jammeh.” said IFJ President Jim Boumelha.

The six Gambian journalists defendants - Gambia Press Union General Secretary Emil
Touray, its Vice President Sarata Jabbi-Dibba and Treasurer Pa Modou Faal together with Pap
Saine, publisher, Ebrima Sawaneh, editor of The Point newspaper; Sam Sarr, editor at the
Foroyaa newspaper – are convicted to two year jail and US$ 20,000 each. They have been all
convicted on six counts of sedition and defamation and have been sent to Mile Two State
Central Prisons, in Banjul the capital.

The arrests of the journalists followed the publication of a statement by the GPU denouncing
comments made on national television by the Gambian Head of State, President Yahya
Jammeh, on the death of Gambian journalist Deyda Hydara and the state of press freedom in
the Gambia.

The seven journalists including Abubcarr Saidykhan Reporter, at the Foroyaa newspaper -
who was eventually released - were initially arrested on 15 June 2009 and charged of
publishing seditious publications and two accounts of criminal defamations.

The IFJ calls for the immediate release of the six journalists jailed, and for genuine inquest in
the assassination of Deyda Hydara, the disappearance of Chief Ibrahima Manneh, and many
other press freedom and freedom of expression abuses in the Gambia.

“The IFJ and its members worldwide will continue to fight shoulder to shoulder with our
Gambian colleagues until justice is done and the six journalists are released.”, added
Boumelha.

The IFJ, in collaboration with global trade union movements and human rights organisations
has built and will continue to build support for the Gambian journalists in a series of protest
activities in Europe, the US and Africa, as part of the global campaign to free the six
journalists.

La FIJ condamne la peine de prison contre des journalistes Gambiens

La Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ) a condamné aujourd'hui la sentence de six

journalistes gambiens à une peine de deux ans d’emprisonnement assortie d’une amende de
20.000 US$ chacun pour avoir critiqué le Président Yahya Jammeh.

"C'est l'un des jours les plus sombres de l'histoire du journalisme africain. Les mots durs
prononcés aujourd'hui par le juge Fagbenle ont eu raison de toutes les garanties
constitutionnelles et des principes de la liberté de la presse. Nos collègues gambiens avaient
raison de n'avoir aucune confiance au système judiciaire gambien qui s'est avéré être
incapable de s’affranchir et est restée fidèle au Président Jammeh» a déclaré Jim Boumelha
Président de la FIJ.

Les six journalistes gambiens accusés -Emil Touray, Secrétaire général du syndicat des
journalistes de Gambie (GPU), Sarata Jabbi-Dibba, la vice-présidente et Pa Modou Faal le
trésorier, ainsi que Pap Saine, Directeur de publication, Ebrima Sawaneh, rédacteur en chef du
journal The Point ; Sam Sarr, Directeur de publication du journal Foroyaa - ont tous été
reconnus coupables des six chefs d’accusation de sédition et de diffamation. Ils ont été
condamnés à deux ans de prison assortis d’une amende de 20.000 US$ chacun et sont
transférés à la prison centrale de Mile Two à Banjul la capitale.

Les arrestations des journalistes ont fait suite à la publication d'un communiqué de GPU
dénonçant des propos tenus à la télévision nationale par le chef d'Etat gambien, le Président
Yahya Jammeh, sur la mort du journaliste gambien Deyda Hydara et l'état de liberté de la
presse en Gambie.

Les sept journalistes dont le journaliste d'Abubcarr Saidykhan, du journal de Foroyaa - qui a
été par la suite libéré - ont été arrêtés le 15 juin 2009 et accusés de diffusion d’informations
séditieuses et de diffamations criminelles.

La FIJ demande la libération immédiate des six journalistes, et l’ouverture d’une enquête
indépendante sur l'assassinat de Deyda Hydara, sur la disparition d'Ebrima Manneh, et sur
beaucoup d'autres abus de liberté de la presse et la liberté d'expression en Gambie.

" La FIJ et ses membres à travers le monde entier continueront à se battre aux côtés de nos
collègues gambiens jusqu'à ce que justice soit faite et que les six journalistes soient libérés" a
ajouté Boumelha.

La FIJ , en collaboration avec le mouvement syndical mondial et les organisations des droits
humains soutient et continuera à soutenir les journalistes gambiens dans une série d'actions de
protestation en Europe, aux USA et en Afrique, dans le cadre d’une campagne mondiale pour
libérer les six journalistes.
