It is an honour as a patron to preside over this wonderful effort and contribute to its success.

His Highness Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al-Nahayan Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development and Honorary President of the Future Centre for Special Needs in Abu Dhabi

Introduction
ABILITIESme Conference is an integral part of the ABILITIESme Congress (that includes the Ministerial Meetings, the Workshops, the Parents Programmes and the Academic/Health Laboratories) and is held under the theme: N.E.E.D: Nurturing, Enabling and Empowering people with Disabilities ABILITIESme Conference programme strives to reinforce attendees perceptions of the tremendous potential of people with disabilities and their collective ability to inspire by reaching new heights, new strengths and new victories in every aspect of community life. The United Nations estimates one billion people with disabilities in the world and that one fth of which originates from the MENA region. This merits an open and honest discussion on the progress made, the options created and perspectives open for people with disabilities. ABILITIESme Conference is founded on the belief that an inclusive society allows all its members to contribute signicantly in its development. Disability management - from a policy, accessibility, healthcare, education or employment point of views is a universal challenge. For decades, industrialised nations, developing countries and emerging economies like the United Arab Emirates, the host of ABILITIESme - have been making tremendous strides in order to propose societal agendas that eliminate discrimination and exclusion, promote inclusion, protect the rights and ensure equal opportunities for people with disabilities. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD) has enacted a specic set of goals that engaged the global community to achieve of time-bound social targets for all disparate actors of the community and the establishment of a strategic framework anchored in an explicit partnership between NGOs and government agencies. ABILITIESme Conference presents a unique chance for an in-depth discussion on: ABILITIESme Conference proposes an insightful outlook into six key themes;

Special needs education and inclusive education Health access, assisted living and independent living Accessibility and universal design Social inclusion and support Empowerment through employment Sustainable policy development
The conference explores, from a strategic vantage point, the factors that contribute to the social, economic, career development and health empowerment of people with disabilities (PWD). Set for the rst time in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, ABILITIESme Conference strives to gather international perspectives, regional expertises and local know-how to address a universal challenge: the empowerment of the most vulnerable citizens in any social group, community and country. While giving an impetus to the UAE/GCC disabilities awareness eorts, ABILITIESme Conference is a global arena for discussions. ABILITIESme Conference is both an active call to action as it is an academic reection on the best practices in special needs education or creative initiatives designed to enhance the social and professional inclusion of individuals considered to be on the fringe of society due to their physical, intellectual or communication impairments. With a set of thought provoking keynote presentations, comprehensive case studies assessing progress made in educational curriculums globally, perspectives on disability-friendly policies, outlook on career options and accessibility measures. ABILITIESme Conference is slated to establish quantiable benchmarks adaptable at any levels and capable of generating a realistic and progressive agenda for the empowerment of people with disabilities and special needs. ABILITIESme Conference will also provide an outlook for international, regional and local public-private/NGO partnership to help assess the sustainability of current or planned collaboration between governments /authorities and constituents in disability issues management. The conference will conclude with a set of recommendations derived from the discussions and constitute a tangible framework that will measure progress made or challenges to be overcome.

ACCESSIBILITY
In Abu Dhabi
In Abu Dhabi regulations based on international standards that came into effect in January 2011 require all new buildings to be accessible for residents with disabilities. The codes include mandates for the maximum incline of ramps, the width of doorways and hallways and the height of necessities such as fire alarms and thermostats. Abu Dhabi Municipality has made great strides in tackling accessibility issues for new construction and development projects.

At ADNEC
ADNEC requires that visitors with disabilities be afforded the same opportunities and access as able-bodied visitors enjoy, therefore ramps and lifts are provided at the entrances to ADNEC. Lifts operate between the floors. Accessible signage and disable-friendly amenities are available onsite. ADNEC has wheelchairs available for daily or event hire for up to a maximum of 6 hours per day from the ADNEC First Aid Point adjacent to Hall 8 concourse. Any request to use the ADNEC wheel chairs to be directed to the ADNEC first aid Point in hall 8 concourse area via email adnecfox@gmail.com or telephone +971 2 406 4456. Wheelchairs are hired free of charge.
