Fit Week engages students

IAN EDWARDS Staff Reporter In partnership with the University of Louisiana System leaders, Student Government Association is holding the rst Get Fit Week all week to raise student awareness about obesity. As of August 2013, Louisiana holds the infamous distinction of being the most obese state in the nation. The states adult obesity rate totals of 34.7 percent of the states inhabitants. This marks an unsettling trend in the states history. Carlton Gray, a senior management major and director of community service with SGA, said the week will consist of numerous fun activities not just intended for weight loss. Get Fit Week will center on getting t with different aspects of your life, Gray said. These include mind, body, nutrition, com-

PAUL HARRIS Staff Reporter A Tech students 15 minutes of fame dawned early in her pursuit of a degree. Frededreia Willis, a freshman journalism major, was interviewed by a CNN columnist John D. Sutter in regards to the most economically divided place in America which he calls her hometown of Lake Providence. I met the reporter at Subway in my hometown, Willis said. We spoke briey and he asked me if Id be interested in answering some questions for the Change the List project he was working on. Sutter said his Change the List project is an attempt to get CNNs audience involved in pushing for change in bottom-of-the-list places. My journey to Lake Providence started with an online vote, Sutter said. Our audience chose income inequality as the top social justice issue of our time so I am covering it in my Change the List project. Sutter said since the late 1970s the US gap between rich and poor has been growing at an incredible and unsustainable rate. East Carroll Parish, home to Lake Providence, is more divided economically than any other parish or county in America. A lot of people dont like to label Lake

Rugby club nishes season with win against Tulane

RANEY JOHNSON Multimedia Editor Saturday the football team will face Southern Miss, but another team has already defeated the Golden Eagles and another opponent the gridiron Bulldogs came up short against. The Louisiana Tech University Rugby Club or the Runkin Dawgs won their last game against Tulane last Saturday, 24-13. We nished the season with a 3-3 record, said Zach Stow, club president and senior sustainable supply chain management major. Stow said the team played teams in the Deep South Rugby Conference . I believe in the end we tied for third in the Deep South Conference, he said. Some of the other teams Tech rugby played this season were the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, South Alabama and Spring Hill, Stow said. Weve played teams that were ranked in the top 25, Stow said. He said the season was a success and an improvement from last season. Last year, the competitive season was in the spring, Stow said. Stow said the change came because of a recent season change from the spring to the fall in the Deep South Rugby

Aaron Gootzeit, vice president of the team, also said the season was an improvement from the previous year. Last year we were 1 and 5 and weve built from there, said Gootzeit, a kinesiology graduate student. We took a big step forward. Gootzeit said one of the reasons for the successful season is the teams coach, Scott Graham. He is from New Zealand, Gootzeit said. He is in town working and he volunteers his time. the past three years. He said Graham has a big inuence on the team. David Berry, a freshman civil engineering major, said the success is not only a result of the teams coach, but also the teams president. We have a great leader in Zach, Berry said. Berry said his rst year on the team was a good experience. I learned a lot and everyone else learned a lot, Berry said. I feel like weve been trained very well and we are going to continue trying to get better. All three members said they have high hopes for the future of the rugby club. Berry said some of the main goals for the team are

to get better and to get more people interested in rugby. We would love more people to come out and join the team, he said. Berry also said he hopes more fans will come out and support the team next season. We care about our fans a lot and that is what is most important to us, Berry said. Gootzeit said some of his hopes are for Tech rugby to one day compete on a national level and offer scholarships to potential players. Similar to Berry, Gootzeit said, he would like to get more fans coming out to the games. It is a very unique sport. Once people watch it, they will enjoy it, Gootzeit said. Stow said although he will no longer be playing for the team because he is graduating he still wants to support the team as an alumnus. I want to see more trophies come into Lambright with Tech rugbys name on them, Stow said. He said he envisions the rugby team one day becoming a Division 1 program in the South. Tech rugby is growing and its going to be an awesome program from now all the way into the future, Stow said.

I think that the Get Fit Movement is a great idea because the U.S. has more than one-third of adult citizens that are considered obese, he said. Louisiana is one of the top states with a high obesity rate. We need to help people become aware of that and put a stop to it. Katie Hickingbottom, one of the event coordinators, said she felt the same way. The event is a great idea, Hickingbottom, a junior biology major, said. Republican opponents of the measure were largely silent, neither addressing the issue on the second day of Senate debate nor commenting unless asked. Written statements from some rendered their judgment that the bill would result in costly, frivolous lawsuits and mandate federal law based on sexuality. Toronto mayor smokes crack, keeps job

ASSOCIATED PRESS Toronto Mayor Rob Ford acknowledged for the rst time Tuesday that he smoked crack probably a year ago when he was in a drunken stupor, but he refused to resign despite immense pressure to step aside as leader of Canadas largest city. Ford said he loves his job and for the sake of the taxpayers, we must get back to work immediately. Allegations that the mayor had been caught on video smoking crack surfaced in news reports in May. Ford initially insisted the video did not exist, sidestepped questions about whether he had ever used crack and rebuffed growing calls to leave ofce. The mayor was forced to backtrack last week after police said they had obtained a copy of the video in the course of a drug inves-

Fords lawyer has declined to talk to police. Police spokesman Mark Pugush said Fords acknowledgement of crack use will be passed on to investigators. Several Toronto city councilors called on Ford to step down, and Canadas justice minister urged him to get help. The controversy has drawn comparisons to the 1990 arrest of then-Washington Mayor Marion Barry, who was videotaped smoking crack cocaine in a hotel room during an FBI sting operation. Barry served six months in federal prison for misdemeanor drug possession but later won a fourth term in 1994.

Teens bring guns to school

ASSOCIATED PRESS Denver police say two 15-year-olds put their lives at risk when they broke into an empty school building carrying BB guns that appeared to be long ries. Department spokesman Sonny Jackson said Tuesday the guns were found after a three-hour standoff during which police tried to coax the teens out using the school intercom system. Police said the weapons looked like assault ries. Two backpacks were also recovered containing items the teens were apparently attempting to steal. Police were worried they might have contained explosives and they brought in a SWAT team and the bomb squad, which sent a robot into KIPP Montbello College Prep Middle School. A lot of BB guns look realistic, Jackson said. We dont want anyone to get hurt, he said after the ordeal ended. He said the two students who were arrested did not attend that school. The school reopened after police searched the building. Police were called after a cleaning crew spotted the teens breaking into the school. Jackson said the youths may have tried unsuccessfully to break into another school an hour before the standoff began.

etix was a great invention. Not because Ive found new favorite shows in "Parks and Recreation" and "American Horror Story," but because the awesome documentary section gives me a new passion each week. During summer break I sat down and watched Waiting for Superman, a documentary about the failures of the American public school system. While I didnt agree with everything I saw, it opened my eyes to the inadequacies in our system. Waiting for 'Superman' exposes problems with state-mandated testing, the tenure system and the lottery system along with others. It follows the plights of ve students and their families who hope to improve their edu-

cation situations by moving into better schools. In most cases they were unsuccessful. While trying to gure my life out a few months ago, I stumbled upon the Teach for America website, and helping those kids became somewhat a reality. The program provided a way for me to give back without committing my life to teaching, and it really excited me, so I applied. For those who dont know what TFA is, its a nonprot organization designed to send highachieving college graduates into low-income communities for at least two years. I made it to the nal interview round, and Im excited for the opportunity. Growing up in Vicksburg, Miss., I attended a failing school, so I can empathize with what its like. As a whole, Vicksburg High School teachers were far from the

best, and, like I saw done in Waiting for Superman, VHS administration often shufed those bad teachers around instead of getting rid of them. It was rough. But good teachers can make a difference. I believe I am the student and person I am because some teachers took time to make the best out of a bad school situation. Mr. Wong, Ms. Campbell, Ms. Habeeb and Ms. Carpenter all took time out of their lives to invest in mine, and now I may get to do the same. Its a great feeling. Im no longer sitting at home waiting for Superman. Im trying to put on my cape, y out into the real world and save the children myself. hen I rst learned of the sexual abuse scandals involving priests, it was from a South Park episode that would probably make even a nonpracticing Catholic blush. As I grew from my sneaking to watch South Park days, the issue became more important to me. I would hear someone who found out I was Catholic make a comment about priests molesting little boys and with each comment, the issue became a little more central to my life. Towards the end of high school around my junior year, I began to become more interested in learning about different cases and trying to nd an answer for myself and

one I could tell others when they confronted me about the scandals. I needed to nd an answer or some sort of justication for why these priests committed such awful acts. My search led me to a documentary about one of the cases called Twist of Fate. It was difcult to watch, but very insightful. At that moment I realized the gravity of the situation. From that moment my interest turned from trying to be an apologist to being an activist. Not only an activist for those men and women betrayed by members of the clergy, but all young children who have been hurt sexually by an adult. I watched the South Park episode again, and this time it was not as funny as the rst time. It ac-

tually made me feel very sad. There is a Law and Order: SVU episode in which some victims of molestation only want an apology from the men who hurt them; but all the men who hurt them are either dead or not all there mentally. There is a bit of closure a lawsuit cannot bring. That SVU episode and the "Twist of Fate" documentary made me realize what a lot of those priest abuse victims will never get. They have received money and pyschological help, but many will never receive an apology.

Hollywood vs. porn: any difference?

KELSY KERSHAW Managing Editor

EVERYONES ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION

to the presence of porn and sex pretty much everywhere T.V., movies, music, books, advertisements it is inescapable. Girls under the age of 13 are wearing stilettos with miniskirts and costume makeup. When I was 13, my mom would not even let me wear makeup, and I did not know what stilettos were. What is happening to society? We used to enjoy songs such as I Cross My Heart by George Strait which symbolized a couple who fell in love. Now we have rap songs like Gonorrhea by Lil Wayne that showcase all the degradation of values in our world. In a Fox News article, there were nine movie titles from this falls lm season that are more pornlike than lmlike. Then the most recent book phenomena Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James is currently in the process of being produced on screen, and it has been deemed erotic and not exactly

ollywood has gone porny. According to a Fox News article, this falls debut lms have not been much different than those of the adult entertainment industry. Hollywood lms have gotten racier including longer sex scenes and less clothing. This falls lms have included everything from statutory rape and sex addiction to incest. It is not the scenes that make the lms porn-like; it is the lack of a story line. All of the movies are empty, very much like porns. What is Hollywoods sudden interest in this genre? Money. Society has become desensitized, and peoples values as a whole are degrading each day. Patrick Wanis, a human behavior expert, said the sexually explicit content is everywhere and Hollywood is making a smart business venture by cashing it in. Todays culture is shifting due

age appropriate for adolescent audiences. The line between porn and Hollywood has become sufciently blurred by todays cultural shift. Values seem to be in disorder. It is ironic how values begin taking a downward spiral during a time of political upheaval and hit rock bottom amidst a government shutdown. Or could it be that the degradation of values is inuencing our countrys legislative leaders, therefore, affecting governmental decisions? Regardless of how one views it, it is a problem. A rapidly growing one. We can only hope something will change before these pornlike, sometimes cynical, storylines become real life. he recent suspension of Miami Dolphins guard Richie Incognito over the hazing of a teammate has created shockwaves throughout the NFL and news outlets. Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin reportedly left the teams facilities last week when he was harassed during lunch by some of his teammates. Martin did not make an attempt to return to the Dolphins facilities following the incident. The NFL and the media have tabbed Incognito as the main reason for Martins departure from the team. Sources have conrmed to ESPN that Incognito left a profane, violent and racial charged voicemail on Martins phone. In lieu of an investigation by the NFL the Dolphins decided to suspend Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team. What has followed Incognitos suspension is a nationwide discussion divulging the prominence of hazing in the NFL and other sports, and also what is considered hazing by different people. Some former NFL players have made comments surrounding the recent turn of events in Miami. Former Saints offensive lineman Kyle Turley told CNN that he had been involved in a hazing incident as a rookie where he, along with other rookies, ran through a hallway with pillowcases on their heads while teammates punched and kicked them. Former Dolphins running back Ricky Williams told CNN that the NFL is like a closed fraternity. Its really not made for everyone. Some NFL personnel, while not defending Incognito, have said that Martin did not handle the situation correctly. One person in the NFL, speaking on condition of anonymity, said to Sports Illustrated that Martin is a weak person for not confronting Incognito for his bullying of him. Another source speaking on condition of anonymity said guys are going to be guysyou handle it in houseght, handle it on the eld, joke about it. The conversation will last for a while on what is hazing compared to joking, what is going too far and what does being an NFL player means when being bullied. The staff of The Tech Talk agrees that hazing should not be tolerated in the work environment, or anywhere else. There is a denite difference between hazing and joking, and that the line should not be crossed when trying to interact with someone else. One should also think before you haze or joke with someone how your actions will affect you in the long run. Is a brief moment of humor worth a history, or lifetime, of being known as a bully, or worse? If you cannot conduct yourself without potentially harming someone else, maybe you should keep to yourself.

Young Legends live on Sleigh Bells new album

First things rst: Sleigh Bells is NOT a band that performs Christmas carols. They are, however, a raucous, dissonant riot of a good time, a point which has been driven home by their newest album, Bitter Rivals. Lead vocalist Alexis Krauss and guitarist Derek Miller create a sound not as iconic as their debut Treats, but more complete than their second album, Reign of Terror. The albums release triggered a promotional tour with various supporting artists, which we were lucky enough to see in Dallas October 26. Highlights from the new album include crowd pleaser Minnie and the title track Bitter Rivals during which Krauss assures her lover though they ght, she cannot live without him. Other favorites include the surprise hits Young Legends, which is far more poppy than the other tracks, and Sing Like a Wire, a song that sounds like a blend of Janet Jackson and My Bloody Valentine. On the track You Dont Get

Guitarist Derek Miller and lead singer Alexis Krauss from the band Sleigh Bells show their personality in a photo shoot. In October the band released their junior album Bitter Rivals.

Me Twice, Krauss assumes her usual dominant role informing a former paramour his chances of getting back with her are slim to none. Upon arriving at the venue, the illusion of Krauss tough-girl exterior was momentarily shattered. We met and spoke with her,

and she could not have been more sweet. We realized we were right all along, however, as she took the stage in boxing gloves and a leopard print robe, wailing the rst few lines of Minnie. We were terried. The duo seemed to emanate a

nonstop source of energy on par with that of the Energizer Bunny on speed. By the third song, the crowd had almost exhausted itself, but the wail of Millers guitar signaling the intro of the bands most popular song Crown on the

Ground channeled life back into everyone. Sleigh Bells is undoubtably a band to be seen live. Bitter Rivals is an album made for the tour scene, with mosh-inducing guitar lines and choruses that encourage the whole audience to sing along. Their sound had become too massive for them to perform alone, leading to the debut of a new live guitarist and drummer. Though we were disappointed they did not perform their hit Rill Rill, the fact that they stayed after the show to ensure everyone got a picture and autograph inspired our forgiveness. Young Legends for sure.

Aries March 21 April 19 Legal papers regarding money that you may have been working on for a while should finally be done today. This should lift your spirits if for no other reason than to have it all out of the way! You should feel especially talkative, enthusiastic, and passionate. You may want to schedule a romantic evening with your partner. Have fun! Taurus Apr 20 . May 20 Some bad experiences regarding career, family, travel, or education could have a friend, colleague, or love partner in an explosive mood today. This person could be unpredictable now - happy one minute and in the depths of gloom the next. Dont try to give advice or cheer up him or her. It will only result in anger. Stay out of the way and let your friend work through it. Gemini May 21 . Jun 20 Job stress might be getting to you. Drinking a lot of water would be a good idea. Moderate amounts of exercise and rest are also indicated. Dont eat very spicy foods. This is a good day to catch up on reading, studying, or research. Your physical self may not be what it should be, but your brain is sharp. Cancer Jun 21 . Jul 22 Today you should feel romantic and passionate and want to get together with your love partner. Youll probably do that, but it may be difficult and only arranged at the last minute. Dont panic if you cant reach your friend during the early part of the day. Dont give up. Youll have a great evening. Leo Jul 23 . Aug 22 A woman, perhaps a colleague whos very bright and sometimes annoying, could visit you today. If you arent careful, this person could goad you into a heated discussion or arouse your insecurity. Try to distance yourself. This person has issues of her own to deal with that have little if anything to do with you. Be polite and understanding and then show her the door! Virgo Aug 23 . Sep 22 A lot of calls could come your way today. Some involve people who live far away, some are from friends with heavy emotional difficulties, and one could come from a romantic partner with whom youre very anxious to get together. You might hop in the car to meet this person somewhere familiar in your community. Dont wear your voice out talking on the phone! Libra Sep 23 . Oct 22 Money matters may need attention today. Bills need to be paid, checks deposited, or contracts executed. The relief you get from handling this should lift your spirits considerably. Get out in the fresh air, take a walk, and work off some of your energy. Get the endorphins going. Phone a friend and spend the evening on the town. Youve worked hard and you deserve it. Scorpio Oct 23 . Nov 21 Youre in a great mood, and youre raring to go at just about anything. Your physical energy is high, so some exercise is indicated, possibly sports. You might want to take a short trip out of town or embark on a new course of study or try your hand at writing. Your enthusiasm and optimism are high, so the skys the limit. Sagittarius Nov 22 . Dec 21 Today you might feel a strong psychic link with a friend who lives far away that you havent seen for a long time. You might wonder what this person is up to and this could be a bit worrying. Dont be shy. Call! One way or another, you should know whats happening. It could be that your friend is just having a bad day. Provide a sympathetic ear! Capricorn Dec 22 . Jan 19 Group activities or meetings could prove fraught today as those around you get pulled into discussions about which they feel strongly and on which they dont all agree! This isnt a good day to get involved in heated discussions even if you find the idea tempting. Stay out of it! Find someone whos also staying out of it and talk to that person. Aquarius Jan 20 . Feb 18 The possibility of impending changes in your personal or professional life could have you feeling worried and insecure. Dont be. If anything, youll benefit from these changes. There could be a lot of tension and stress in the air, and it will be hard to avoid picking up on this energy. Try to relax! Let yourself be carried along by the current. Pisces Feb 19 . Mar 20 You may have been making plans to take a long trip or return to school for an advanced degree. Until now you may have put it off. Youve finally stepped over the line and made the decision to do it. Theres no stopping you! You may spend a lot of time on the phone gathering information and making preliminary arrangements.

when I get that opportunity I cherish it; it makes me want to strive more and achieve in life. Sutter said the lake in Lake Providence is less than a mile wide but it separates two worlds. The poor largely live on one side of the lake, the rich, the other, Sutton said. Sure theres a road that connects the two, but the lake is a potent symbol and a real barrier. Sutter said inequality in Lake Providence grows out of an ugly history. In the 1800s white plantation owners got rich by forcing slaves to pick their crops. Thats changed, of course, but those who own the land now still control the economy. Economic inequality is the unnished business of the civil rights movement, Sutter said. To truly have a fair society, our economy, not just the laws, must work for everyone. Willis said in the opening seconds of the video that she hopes that one night the Holy Spirit will move over the town. We have to sit back and think, why is God keeping this town alive? Willis said. Its because he knows there is denitely hope here, hes waiting for us to start to believe in ourselves. Willis said that she wishes her community would interfere with each others lives. In the last seconds of the video, Willis said she wishes she could build a beautiful bridge across the lake to force the different economic classes to interact. The video can be found at www.cnn.com/changes. I dont wish to build it solely for transportation purposes, but as a symbol to connect the two worlds that are divided by the lake and bridge the gap between the economically unequal gap that is ever growing here, Willis said.

Providence as poor, but it is, Willis said. Its not a negative comment. Its real, we cant shun away from whats real. Sutter said the poorest fth of Lake Providence makes an average of $6,800 a year while the top 5 percent makes more than $600,000 a year. These numbers create the gap that is greater than any other place in America. I feel like being from Lake Providence allows me to appreciate doing and seeing things outside of my hometown, Willis said. Meet our new mascot and the family who cares for him
CODY SEXTON Staff Reporter To the students, faculty and fans of Louisiana Tech football, the new mascot is known as Tech XXI. Successor to the late Tech XX, he is a symbol of strength for the athletes of Tech and one of unity for the Tech family. To the Scott family however, Tech XXI is simply Festus. Holtzkys Festus Hagen, to be precise. No strangers to adopting and fostering dogs, Festus is the fth dog the Scott family has welcomed into their home. Weve been rescuing and taking in dogs for some time now, Michelle Scott said. Michelle and her husband Greg are both Tech alumni and said they were proud to be the caregivers of Techs new mascot. However, getting to be the caregivers was no easy feat. The Scotts had to apply to be Festus caregivers to ensure they met the requirements of the United States Department of Agriculture and ensure they were t to care for him. We had to make sure the USDA was happy after what happened to the last mascot, Greg said. Techs previous mascot, Tech XX, died from a heat stroke in July 2012. Complying with the USDAs requirements included the Scotts building a fence, ensuring Festus eats the right food and gets regular exercise. Will Dearmon, former president of the Student Government Association who currently works at the Bulldog Achievement Resource Center, handled bringing Festus down from Missouri. Leaving his life as a show dog behind him, Festus made his debut as Techs new mascot at the 2013 Homecoming game against North Texas. Though the Scotts are not obligated to take Festus to all sporting events, the Scotts accompanied him to his homecoming debut where two of the children accompanied him on the eld. When Festus is not fullling his mascot duties like overseeing football games and posing for pictures with Tech students, he spends his time as any other dog in the Scotts home. Since he came from living with a breeder to being part of a family, Michelle said it took Festus time to get used to being part of a family. Hes come a long way, she said about Festus attitude toward living with the Scotts. It took awhile, but hes just like a member of the family. Having been raised around so many other animals, the Scotts children were unfazed about adding another fourlegged member to their family. Were used to having a bunch of dogs, said the Scotts oldest daughter, Skylar. One more didnt hurt. Though they were disappointed when it turned out they did not get a puppy as they suspected, Skylar and her younger sister, Jordan, came to love Festus like any other pet. They dressed him up in wigs and glasses for Halloween and laugh at the way he interacts with the familys other pets. Festus has since found his place in their home and made it his own. Hes so stubborn, Michelle said with a laugh. He loves the couch even though hes not supposed to be on it. When the Scotts signed the contract agreeing to be Festus caregivers, they agreed to care of him for ve years. After that we have the option to make him a permanent member of the family, Michelle said.

FOOTBALL

Cowboys fan in Saints country

raitor is a word commonly thrown my way. It is usually followed with some argument about how the Dallas Cowboys are the worst team to ever play in the National Football League and the New Orleans Saints are the greatest team. Weeks like this one are always the worst. With the Cowboys and Saints facing off this Sunday, arguments of why the Dallas Cowboys are better never seem to end. So I gured I would make my case as to why I am so passionate about the Cowboys and why I believe they are a better team than the Saints. As a young boy, my father and I bonded over football. Every Sunday, I watched the Cowboys play with him, and it is a tradition we continue to this day, although now we have to text about the game since I cannot go home every weekend. Unlike the common Saints fan, I am not a bandwagoner. My passion for my team was instilled in me at a young age by my father, just as his was instilled in him at a young age. I was a fan of the team during the Troy Aikman era and the Drew Bledsoe era. I have seen the ups and downs. Sure, the Saints have had recent successes, but we all know that the best teams in any sport see success in more than just a handful of seasons. The statistics just do not even begin to compare. The Saints have made nine playoff appearances to the Cowboys 30. The Cowboys have 21 division championships, while the Saints have nine. The Saints have one Super Bowl win in one appearance, while the Cowboys have ve Super Bowl wins in eight appearances. The Cowboys are tied for most Super Bowl appearances with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although I tend to let everyone think I hate the Saints because it makes for fun argument, that is just not true. I do not have a problem with Louisianas team at all. However, at the end of the day, I would much rather be a fan of Americas Team than a member of the Who Dat Nation. And lets face it, ve Super Bowl rings is much better than one. Kaleb Causey is a senior political science and journalism major from Jonesboro. Email comments to ktc013@ latech.edu.

Basketball teams set to begin seasons

Overall record: (0-8, 0-4 C-USA) Points per game: 33.0 Points allowed per game: 38.5 Touchdowns (rushing/passing): 1/10 Players to watch: Markese Triplett - WR 346 yards 3 touchdowns Rickey Bradley - WR 304 yards 1 touchdown The Golden Eagles have forced 13 defensive turnovers. The team has not won a game since the 2011 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl vs. Nevada.

KALEB CAUSEY Sports Editor The mens and womens basketball teams will begin their seasons this week as the Bulldogs play at St. Marys tomorrow and the Lady Techsters play at South Carolina on Sunday. The Bulldogs had a pair of exhibition games at home over the past two weeks as they beat University of Arkansas at Monticello 85-64 and Southern Arkansas University 10049. The Lady Techsters will be taking the court for the rst time this season Sunday. Both teams will face tough opponents this season. The Bulldogs will face 12 different teams that saw postseason play last year. Among those are St. Marys, Southern Miss,

Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. The womens team will face 13 teams who made appearances in the postseason last year. Their schedule includes South Carolina, Texas A&M and LSU, all of which are ranked in the AP Top 25 to begin this season. Sports analysts and reporters all across the nation have been talking about the Bulldogs as they make their season predictions. Jeff Goodman of ESPN named head coach Mike White No. 15 on his list of top 20 mid-major coaches. Three of the six staff members of CBSSports. com picked the Bulldogs to win the Conference-USA championship. Midmajormadness.com ranked the team No. 6 on their preseason top 15 mid-major

poll. Junior guard Raheem Appleby was also added to the C-USA preseason players-to-watch list. The Lady Techsters are ranked No. 11 of 16 in the C-USA preseason coaches poll and are entering the season with a brand new coaching staff surrounding head coach Teresa Weatherspoon. It will be a difcult challenge as we have stepped up in the talent levels of the teams, Weatherspoon said. When you talk about competing in C-USA, we have to have players who can be effective and productive on a nightly basis. We need to make sure we compete on that major level every single night. The Lady Techsters are returning three starters and seven letterwinners from last years season. The team will feature

a new player at the point guard position for the third year in a row in Chrisstasia Walter. Walter is a transfer from Hutchinson Community College where she led the Lady Dragons to a No. 3 national ranking and a 36-2 record. The Bulldogs will have their rst home game next Wednesday as they meet Centenary College on the court. The home opener for the Lady Techsters will be against LSU on Nov. 23. This season will be Techs rst in ConferenceUSA. For more on basketball and other Tech athletics, follow The Tech Talk Sports Desk on Twitter at twitter.com/techtalksports.
