Ectopic Pregnancy In a normal pregnancy, the fertilized egg implants to the lining of the uterus whereas in ectopic pregnancy,

the fertilized egg or the embryo attaches itself somewhere outside the uterus. In most cases, implantation occurs in one of the fallopian tubes, which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus, and is known as Tubal Pregnancy. Apart from this, implantation can also occur in the ovaries, abdomen and cervix. It is a complication of pregnancy that is not viable; except for some rare exceptions. It is dangerous for the mother as internal hemorrhaging can cause heavy bleeding which is either not healthy or can be life-threatening. Types of Ectopic pregnancy are: 1. Tubal Pregnancy: Most ectopic pregnancies are tubal pregnancies and it occurs when the fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tubes. 2. Non-Tubal Ectopic Pregnancy: Around two percent of the ectopic pregnancies occur in the cervix, ovary, or are intraabdominal. There have been very rare cases, in which, abdominal pregnancy resulted in a live birth. 3. Heterotopic Pregnancy: This type of pregnancy occurs when there are two or more fertilized eggs and one of them implants outside the uterine cavity. 4. Persistent Ectopic Pregnancy: It is the trophoplastic growth continuation after an ecotopic pregnancy has been removed through surgical intervention. Cases with live birth: Although, ectopic pregnancy is not viable in most cases, there have been cases where ectopic pregnancy has lasted many months and resulted in a live birth. In most cases, the child is delivered by laparotomy, which is a surgical procedure that involves gaining access into the abdominal cavity. In 1999, there had been two cases where ectopic pregnancy resulted in live birth. A baby girl delivered through caesarean section by Lori Dalton. And triplets delivered by English woman Jane Ingram. Of the triplets, intrauterine twins were delivered first and then the extra uterine fetus was taken out, resulting in live birth of all three. There have been more cases in 2008, where ectopic pregnancy resulted in live birth through laparotomy and caesarean section.

Initially, it is a little hard to detect if the pregnancy is ectopic but if the mother feels any of the following symptoms, detailed ultrasound should be done to save the mothers life since this kind of pregnancy can be life-threatening. Symptoms: Lower abdomen pain with inflammation or cramping Pain while urinating Pain while passing bowels or during bowel movement Vaginal bleeding leading to fainted woman Lightheadedness leading to fainted woman Shoulder pain
