Constructing bar charts

Statistics and Probabilit y

To construct a bar chart choose suitable scales for the vertical and horizontal axes use a jagged mark on the vertical axis if the frequency of the data is too high determine the length or height of each bar based on the frequency of the data represented by the bar draw the bars and space them out regularly label the axes and write the title above the chart The above steps can also be used to construct a multiple bar chart if more than one set of data are given.

Example:

Class No. of Boys No. of Girls

A 18 12

B 14 16

C 15 15

D 11 19

Draw a multiple bar chart showing the numbers of boys and girls in four classes.

Probability
The probability, that is the chance, of an event taking place can be certain, possible or impossible.

E State the probability for each situation by filling in certain,

possible, or impossible in the blanks.

1. The age of my friends increase every year. 2. There is always sunshine after rain. 3. All humans will die. 4. When you toss a coin, you will get a head.

Certain Possible Certain Possible

5. When you throw a dice, you might get the number 7. Impossible 6. The moon rises up in the west. F Answer the questions. 1. There are 3 yellow pens, 5 blue pens and 2 red pens in a bag. James puts his hand into the bag and takes out a pen without looking. What is the probability of James getting (a) a pen? (b) a blue pen? (c) a green pen? Impossible Certain Possible Impossible

2. There are 3 white ping-pong balls and 7 yellow ping-pong balls in a box. Linna picks up a ping-pong ball from the box without looking into the box. (a) There is a chance of picking a red ping-pong ball. Is this true? Why? No, because there is no red ping-pong balls in the box. (b) What is the possible outcome for Linna? She might pick up a white or yellow ping-pong ball. (c) What is the color of the ping-pong ball will Linna most likely pick up? Why? Yellow, because there is more yellow ping-pong balls.
