Padina pavonica (Linnaeus) Thivy in Taylor

kingdom Chromista phylum Ochrophyta class Phaeophyceae order Dictyotales family Dictyotaceae genus Padina

Description
Morphology
External morphology. Thallus was yellow- to dark-brown color, and became black brown color when dried. Thallus was upright with rhizoid holdfast, fan shape, thick membrane-like texture, 8-20 cm in height and 5-17 cm in width. Concentric hair bands were very obvious, 1-2 mm in width, whereas the zone between hair bands were 2.5-3.0 mm in width. Slightly calcification was on the inner than outer surface of thallus with Vaughaniella stage. White hairs were concentric arranged on the two surfaces of thallus, and brown fluffs were covered over the base to middle part of thallus. Anatomical structure. Thallus was 60-70 ?m in thickness at the margin, composed of 2 layer cells, whereas 90-115 ?m in thickness at the base of thallus, composed of 3 layer cells. The outer cells were smallest, the middle cells were largest, and the inner cells were equal or smaller to the middle cells. The outer cells were 19-38 ?m in length and 25-40 ?m in height, the middle cells were 62-74 ?m in length and 25-45 ?m in height, whereas the inner cells were 28-68 ?m in length and 25-30 ?m in height. Hairs were 50-80 ?m in length and 6-9 ?m in diameter, and composed of 6-12 cells. Reproduction. Sporangia were assembled to concentric sorus, with obvious indusium, and arranged on the every zone between hair bands at the outer surface of thallus. Sporangial sorus were closed to the hair bands, and sometimes more than two row sporangial sorus were observed on the same zone between hair bands. Sporangia were ovoid shape which 95-175 ?m in height and 55-100 ?m in diameter, and possessed a basal stalk cell which 6-22 ?m in height and 25-52 ?m in diameter. Gametophytes were monoecism. The disturbed patterns of oogonial and antheridial sorus were similar to sporangial sorus. Oogonia and antheridia were lined together and irregularly alternative arranged on the same zone between hair bands. Oogonial sorus were orange-brown color, with indusium, and were smaller than sporangial sorus. Oogonia were ovoid shape which 42-91 ?m in height and 41-63 ?m in diameter, and possessed a basal stalk cell which 5-20 ?m in height and 30-48 ?m in diameter. Antheridial sorus were white color, antheridia were cylinder which 23-46 ?m in height and 18-33 ?m in diameter, and possessed a basal stalk cell which 10-21 ?m in height and 10-26 ?m in diameter. In cross section, antheridium was composed of 28-68 locus which 1-3 ?m in height and 1-4 ?m in diameter. Author(s): Wei-Lung Wang
