Crochet Rudolph the Reindeer Hat Pattern

I have to admit this is hands down my favorite hat that I have crocheted to date :) I love the addition of the felt pieces and the way the bottom rim flips over to create the snout. In an effort to get this pattern to you before Christmas, I have only worked this up in 0-3 months size. But I am confident that the ears and antlers will work on the larger hats. The mouth portion doesn't have a specific stitch count (I will explain more below), so that should work for larger hats as well. Ok, enough talk, here it is!

Materials: - 1 red button - Size H and F Crochet Hook - Tapestry needle

When you have complete the basic hat, you are going to add 3 more rounds in beige to create the snout. Pattern is as follows:

Reindeer Snout Pattern: Round 1: SC around in new color, join, chain 1 Round 2: SC around until you get to towards the middle of the front of the hat. This is where you are going to make 7 DC stitches (be sure that the 7 DC are centered in the front because this is the start of the Reindeer snout), SC the rest of the way around, join to first SC. Round 3: Slip stitch around until you get the 7 DC, make another 7 DC, continue to slip stitch around the rest of the hat, join to first slip st, fasten off, weave in ends.

Now flip the "snout" up and fasten it in place with a red button. Reindeer Ears: - Create two in Rust color using H or J hook (the larger the hook, the bigger the ear).

- Then create two more using an F hook and lighter colored yarn. Sew the smaller pieces into the inside of the ear. Then sew finished ears onto hat.

Chain 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook and the rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn. Row 2: SC across, chain 1, turn. Row 3: 2 SC in first stitch, sc in next 2, 2 SC in last stitch, chain 1, turn. Row 4-5: SC across, chain 1, turn. Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC Decrease Row 7: SC across Row 8: 2 SC decreases Row 9: SC decrease Chain 1 and SC around edges, fasten off and weave in ends.

Reindeer Antlers and Eyes:

Here is the downloadable template for the antlers and eyes. You will need to cut out 4 antlers from dark brown felt and one each of the eyes and eyeballs. The eyes should be cut with white felt and the eyeballs with black felt.

When it's the size you desire, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto top of hat. Stuff lightly with poly-fil (or extra yarn) and sew onto top of hat by weaving tapestry needle under the last row of single crochets and then through the hat.

Sew black buttons on for eyes, or sew on a larger white button and hot glue a small black button on top of the white button (as seen in the hat in the first picture of this post).

Crochet Zebra Hat Pattern

Before we begin let me remind you of some basic directions you should follow while crocheting my hats: - Always start your rounds in the same stitch as your chain. - Always join your rounds to the first DC, NOT the chain. - Your last stitch should be in the stitch before your chain. - Do NOT count the chain 2 (or chain 1) as a stitch.

Earflaps: To figure out where your earflaps should go, fold your hat so the seam is straight up the back (we will cover it up with the mohawk). Now your earflaps should be (approximately) centered on either side. So lets say you are making a 3-6 month size hat. Each earflap will be 10 SC's long. So you will need to center 10 SC on either side of the hat. I can tell you that for the smaller hats I ended up about 7 or 8 stitches from the back seam in either direction to start the earflaps.

You can rotate color to make your earflaps striped or make them a solid white or a solid black. Earflaps for Newborn: (make one on each side of hat) Attach yarn and Chain 1, SC in next 8, chain 1, turn Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 3: SC across (6 SC) Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 5: SC across (4 SC) Row 6: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn Row 7: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends Earflaps for 0-3 months - Preschooler (make one on each side of hat) Attach yarn and Chain 1, SC in next 10, chain 1, turn Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 3: SC across (8 SC) Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 5: SC across ( 6 SC) Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 7: SC across (4 SC) Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn Row 9: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends Earflaps for Child - Adult (make one on each side of hat) Attach yarn and Chain 1, SC in next 12, chain 1, turn Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 8, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 3: SC across (10 SC) Row 4: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 5: SC across ( 8 SC) Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 7: SC across ( 6 SC) Row 8: SC decrease, SC in next 2, SC decrease, chain 1, turn Row 9: SC across (4 SC) Row 10: Make 2 SC decreases, chain 1, turn Row 11: SC decrease, fasten off, weave in ends

With accent color (like pink or green), and beginning at any point on the hat (I chose to start on the earflap), SC around hat and earflaps, when you get to the top of each earflap: chain 40 (or as long/short as you wish), slip stitch in 2nd chain from hook and the rest of the way down the chain. Fasten off and weave in ends. ______________________________ Ears (make 2): Chain 5, SC in 2nd chain from hook and in remaining chains, ch1, turn (4 SC) Row 2: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next two, 2 SC in last stitch, ch 1, turn (6 SC) Row 3-5: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6 SC) Row 6: SC Decrease, SC in next two, SC decrease, ch 1, turn Row 7: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (4 SC) Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, continue to sc around entire ear. Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat.

Cut two pieces of white felt to fit into each ear. Use a strand of 2-ply yarn in your accent color (separate your 4-ply yarn) and with your tapestry needle, stitch felt onto the crocheted ear. Be sure not to poke the needle all the way through the ear so you don't see the stitches on the back of the ear.

Sew ears onto hat by first pinching the bottom of the ear together and stitching that together with your tapestry needle. Then sew it onto your hat through two of the double crochets along the fold of round 3. Keep weaving yarn in and out of ear and around the double crochets until it is secure. Weave in ends.

Mohawk

Use your seam as a guide. You will want your mohawk to travel up the seam and to the top of the hat. To make the mohawk fringe:

Step 1: Loop your yarn around hand a couple of times. Step 2-3: Take your hook and pull one end of the loops through one of the DC stitches along the seam. I recommend starting at the bottom and working your way to the top. Step 4-5: Pull yarn through the loop on the right side of your seam. Pull tight. Step 6: Cut end loops and trim yarn. Step 7: Continue to do this all the way up the hat.

______________________________ Face

Use two black .5" buttons for the eye, and two small buttons for the nose. Cut the snout out of felt. You can use the picture bellow to see the shape the snout should be in. Cut it bigger for larger hats and smaller for smaller hats. I will try to make a template for the felt ears and snout pieces when I am able to get ahold of a scanner.

Sew the nose buttons onto the felt snout. Using 2-ply black yarn (separate your 4-ply yarn) and a tapestry needle, stitch the felt snout onto the hat. The felt piece should be centered and rest against the accent color on the bottom of your hat.

Stitch the black button eyes about the snout.

Crochet Lamb Hat Pattern

The sweet little baby that is growing in my tummy got me thinking of all the cute hats I need be making in preparation for his/her arrival. I loved the idea of making a lamb hat and I had to make a boy version and a girl version since we don't know the gender yet. There are lots of different yarns you could use to create different effects and you can even add some felt accents to create a lamb face. I can't wait to see what you come up with! Be sure to post your finished hat on my Facebook page for all to see :)

Feel free to add your own embellishments. I went ahead and added a felt face to my hat! I cut out the face, eyes and nose from felt, added two black buttons for the eyes and stitched everything together and then onto the front of the hat with matching yarn and a tapestry needle.
