IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear Daejeon Guest English Teachers,

Thank you very much for your hard work! At this time in the year, the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education (DMOE) Guest English Teachers (GET) can reflect on the past years lessons and experiences. It is also the time to decide whether to renew or not to renew your DMOE contract. In order to help you make your decision, please note especially the following policy changes.

Due to a substantial amount of the budget shortage in the DMOE GET program, it has been decided that the Daejeon High Schools and Special School will no longer have Guest English Teachers, with the exception of a handful of Foreign Language and Science Schools as of 2014. However, if high school GETs would like to re-sign as a GET in Daejeon, they will be placed in a different school level. We will retain current high school Guest English Teachers in middle schools and elementary schools, so if you are currently a high school teacher, and you wish to renew, you will be relocated to a new middle or elementary school upon renewal.

Also, in order to retain only highly-qualified GETs, there have been two changes made regarding the score of the GET Evaluation. First, the minimal cumulative score required for renewal has been increased from 70% to 80% out of 100%. Second, the minimal score for each criterion must be 6 or higher. Please note that applicants with a cumulative score of 80 or higher and who received less than 6 points in any single criterion will not be eligible for renewal regardless of their final grade. (please see GET evaluation on page 4).Thus, we would like to stress that renewal offers are not available to every GET, but only to those with a satisfactory performance evaluation.

Lastly, we included the administrative procedures of renewal or non-renewal below. This is also to help you understand what to expect when your contract is successfully completed. Please read the information below carefully and contemplate your decision. Thank you very much!

A. GET Evaluation
A GET evaluation form will be sent to your school. Your principal, vice-principal and English coteachers will evaluate your overall performance. Evaluation criteria are as follows, and you will be scored on a scale of 1-10 for each one. To reiterate, if any one of the criteria is scored 5 or less (poor), you will not be eligible for renewal

1. Comprehensible spoken English language 2. Comprehensible and legible written English language on board 3. Demeanor on duty and attitude as a teacher 4. Maintaining rapport and cooperating with teachers at school 5. Abiding by the contract and the school regulations 6. Researching, creating materials and providing formative student evaluation 7. Passion, creativity, and quality of teaching 8. Making lesson plans 9. Warm and open demeanor towards students 10. Health

For each category you will receive up to ten points totaling 100 points. If your total score is lower than 80 points, or one of any criterion scored 5 or less(poor), you will not be offered a new contract by the DMOE. All your tardies, absences, sick leaves, etc. will be counted in the evaluation as well in a separate section. The evaluation contents and score are confidential. GETs will only learn if they have been approved or denied renewal.

B. In the Event of Renewal of the Contract

a. Level and Duration of Employment:

If you have just completed one year at level 3, you will automatically be moved up one level, in this case to level 2, with your new contract. The same rule applies for levels 2 and 2+. However, you must complete two consecutive years with the DMOE at level 1 before being moved up to level 1+. The DMOE will only issue the one-year contract. We will no longer issue 6 month contract.

b. Remuneration after Renewal:

Current Level 1+ level 1 level 2+ level 2 level 3 level 2,600,000 KRW 2,400,000 KRW 2,200,000 KRW 2,100,000 KRW 1,900,000 KRW 1+ level (After 2 yrs) 1+ level (After 1 yr) 1 level 1 level 2+ level 2 level 2,600,000 KRW 2,600,000 KRW 2,400,000 KRW 2,400,000 KRW 2,200,000 KRW 2,100,000 KRW Monthly Pay TO After Renewal Monthly Pay

c. Required Documents for Renewal

To apply for renewal of your contract, you must submit two documents to DMOE through your school by Friday, November 22nd.
1. Application for Renewal sealed and signed (for All GETs whether you renew or not) 2. Self Health Check Report for Renewal (for GETs who would like to renew) 3. Copy of TEFL/TESOL certificates (If during the past year you have received a

TEFL/TESOL certificate that may affect your pay level)

Please note that #1 and #2 documents will be included in the official packet that we send to your school. Please ask your co-teacher to collect them.

Please Note:
As the High School GET program is phasing out from February 2014, renewal at the current high school will not be an option for the high school GETs. Thus, high school GETs must obtain a written recommendation letter from the Principal to renew in addition to achieving 80 or higher evaluation score, and this letter will be directly sent from your school to the DMOE.

All GETs whose renewal has been approved; you will be asked to come to the Office of Education in person on December 18th (Wed.) to sign your new contract. When you come to sign, you need to submit the following.

1. Everyone must bring an Original Medical Report including TBPE(drug test) from any of

designated medical institutes. The DMOE no longer requires an AIDS test.

2.

(For those to whom it applies) Copy of TESL/TEFL/TESOL Certificates.(100 Hrs +) if you did not submit it earlier

e. After Renewal Visa Extension

All GETs are solely responsible for checking their legal residence and employment status in Korea. Each GET has a different visa expiration date, depending on the application submission date. Please check your visa expiration date on your Alien Registration Card. After signing your new contract, you must bring your new contract and other necessary documents to the immigration office to extend your visa. (The earliest you can apply for visa extension is two months prior to expiration of your alien card. To apply for an extended visa, you should submit the required documents below to Daejeon immigration office in person.)

The following documents are required for the visa extension. -Application Form (available at the Immigration Office) - Passport - ARC (Alien Registration Card) - Original new contract (for their reference) and one copy of the contract - Copy of DMOE Business Certificate (will be provided by DMOE on the signing day- Dec. 18th) - Processing Fee (30,000 won cash)

f. Vacation:
Regular Vacation Days Your contract stipulates that you have 8 days of vacation during the summer break and 10 days of vacation during the winter break. These are working days (not calendar days) and will be referred to as regular vacation days. Regular vacation days must be taken during their respective school breaks, i.e. the 8 summer vacation days must be taken during the schools summer break, and the 10 winter vacation days must be taken during the schools winter break. You may not transfer them to days when classes or camps are in session. You may not transfer them to the following school break. You need to take all of your regular vacation days during their respective school break during the term of the contract in which they were issued. However, if special circumstances arise, you may obtain an approval from the Principal to make a necessary arrangement.
8

Renewal Vacation Days Upon renewal of a one-year contract, you will receive 7 more days of paid vacation. These are calendar days (not working days) and will be referred to as renewal vacation days. If, due to the school schedule, you are unable to take your 7 renewal vacation days during the first school break when the renewal of your contract signed, you may take them during the next school break. For example, if you renew in February, and your schools winter break is not long enough to accommodate camps, your regular vacation days, and your renewal vacation days, you may take your renewal vacation days along with your winter vacation days during the schools spring or summer break. These rules do not apply to GETs at the training institute and they can obtain an approval to use vacations when the camps are not in session.

Please Note:
All vacation days, regular and renewal, must be taken during the term of the contract in which they were issued. Vacation days cannot be transferred to a new contract period except their renewal vacation (only if they would work at the same school after renewal). You will not receive payment for any unused vacation days upon completion of your contract. Also, the vacation days may not be carried from one school to the next, so if you are expecting a school transfer upon renewal, please use all your regular vacation days along with your renewal vacation days at your current school. Any unused regular or renewal vacation days not taken by the end of the contract term will be forfeited.

It is very important to consult with your school about the schedule of any camps or other programs and obtain final approval before you make your vacation plans in order to avoid any conflicts.

g. Renewal Allowance:
Upon renewal of another 1 full year, you will receive 2,000,000 KRW as a renewal allowance. This will be provided to you after beginning of your new contract. If, for any reason, the contract is terminated within the first six months of your new contract dates, you are obligated to pay back 700,000 KRW of the 2,000,000 Korean Won Renewal Allowance. (Contract 10-4)
9

h. Severance Pay:
You are eligible to earn severance pay approximately equivalent to one month's salary if you have completed a one-year (52 weeks) contract. However, please note that your severance will not be disbursed at the time of your renewal, but rather upon completion of your final contract with the DMOE in accordance with the Labor Law of Korea. Please refer to our prior announcement regarding this change at http://djgets.edurang.net under Announcement article #25.

i. School Transfer:
Elementary & Middle School GETs - If your contract gets renewed, you will be assigned to the same school unless you have requested a transfer that has been approved. If a GET wants to transfer from their current school to another school, he/she must have worked for at least two years at their current school before being allowed to transfer. Unfortunately, the DMOE is unable to consider preferences for particular areas.

High Schools GETs With the exception of Daejeon Foreign Language High School and Daejeon Science High School, if your contract gets renewed, you will be transferred to an elementary school or a middle school. If you currently have your own housing, you will be placed in a school within an hours commute of your house. Otherwise, unfortunately the DMOE is unable to consider preferences for particular areas.

C. In the Event of Non-Renewal of Contract

a. Visa Extension
All GETs are solely responsible for checking their legal residence and employment status in Korea. Each GET has a different visa expiration date, depending on the application submission date. Please check your visa expiration date on your Alien Registration Card. Korea Law stipulates that a person with an E2 Visa may stay only until the date indicated on the Alien Registration Card. Grace period (maximum of 30 days) may be granted only if you apply for it in person with a flight ticket at the Daejeon Immigration Office prior to the expiration date. If your stay exceeds the visa expiration date, even for one day, you are subject to a penalty at the airport. Your employer will not be responsible for your penalty. If the E-2 visa expires before the last date of the contract, or if the visa expires on the same date as the last day of the contract, go to the Daejeon Immigration Office in person before the visa expiration date with ample processing time and apply for a grace period (up to 30 days only). ** Important: You need to keep the valid WORKING VISA to get paid your last paycheck. Even if you leave earlier claiming your paid vacation, you must hold valid working visa until the last day of the contract. The following documents are required for the visa extension. 1. Application Form (available at the Immigration Office) 2. Current Contract 3. Passport 4. Alien Registration Card 5. Processing Fee (varies depending on nationality) : Appx. 30,000 won 6. A copy of DMOE Business Certificate You need to contact me to receive this document in advance 7. Flight ticket (it is not required but you may be asked to present it by the Immigration officer)

**Grace period is NOT automatically granted to GETs. You MUST APPLY for it in person.
11

b. Refund of Pension Plan: American, Canadian, and Australian GETs are eligible for a Pension Plan refund according to treaties between Korea and their respective countries. Your school will report the completion of your contract to the pension office. Then, (up to one month before your departure from Korea) you must request a refund in person at the Pension office, not at the school. Please refer to the website of the National Pension Corporation at http://www.npc.or.kr for detailed information about the Pension Plan and the application process for refund. A telephone consultation service is also provided by the National Pension Corporation within Korea and their telephone number is simply 1355. You do not need to dial an area code. Please download the lump-sum application form from at http://djgets.edurang.net under GET Boards >Downloads or obtain it at the Pension office.

The following documents are required for the Pension Plan refund: - Lump-sum Refund Application Form - Passport - Alien Registration Card - Flight Ticket (departure date must be indicated) - Bank Account Number (Bankbook, bank statement or voided check)

c. Severance Pay:
You are eligible to claim severance pay approximately equivalent to one month's salary if you have completed at least one one-year contract. The application form is available on our GET website (http://djgets.edurang.net) under the GET Boards >Downloads menu, and you are required to submit the Severance Pay Request Form to your school at least 1 week prior to contract completion. It usually takes 14 business days for the check to be deposited. Though the schools are not obligated to do so, you may request that they make the deposit on the last day of your contract. Alternatively, the check can be wired to a bank account in your home country. If you chose this option, you will need to give the bank account number to the school before you leave, and you will bear any fees incurred for wiring the money.

12

d. Exit Allowance:
Upon successful completion of your contract, you will be paid 1,300,000 KRW as your exit allowance within a month of fulfilling your contract. You must submit a copy of your plane ticket, a copy of your e-ticket, or a copy of the receipt for your plane ticket along with the application form to receive this allowance. The application form is available on our GET website (http://djgets.edurang.net) under the GET Boards >Downloads menu. It usually takes 14 business days to be deposited. Though your school is not obligated to do so, you may request that the deposit be made into your Korean account on the last day of your contract. Alternatively, it can be wired to a bank account in your home country. If you chose this option, you will need to give the bank account number to the school before you leave, and you will bear any fees incurred for wiring the money ***Exit allowance will only be paid if you actually LEAVE the country after successful completion of the contract. If you plan to work for the new employer in Korea without obtaining a brand-new visa, your exit allowance will not be paid in accordance with the contract 11-4.

e. Letter of Release
We no longer offer letter of release to GETs as it is no longer a requirement to have this document to change your employer after completion of your contract with us. However, if you obtain official copies of your submitted documents such as Apostille Degree, Criminal Check or transcripts etc. from us for your new job application in Korea, your exit allowance will NOT be paid even if you fail to get a new job in Korea. So, if you plan to continue working in Korea after leaving the position with the DMOE, we suggest you to arrange in advance to receive another set of original documents for your new employer in Korea to avoid losing your exit allowance.

f. Copies of Submitted Documents: The original documents that you submitted when you applied through EPIK or other agencies cannot be returned to you under any circumstance. We can provide you an official copy (meaning that it will be stamped saying that it is verified as being a true copy) that has a
13

coordinator's signature on it. We cannot guarantee that other provinces or institutions will accept these, so please make sure before requesting them. Copies of documents will take up to 3 days and must be picked up at the DMOE. We will only provide these if you are in the process of applying for a new job in Korea. To obtain official copies, first you must ask your school to request the documents from the DMOE. Then, the school must make the request on official letterhead and send it as an official paper. Likewise, we suggest you to arrange in advance to receive another set of original documents for your new employer in Korea to avoid losing your exit allowance. Please note that you still need to submit a copy of your plane ticket, a copy of your e-ticket, or a copy of the receipt for your plane ticket along with the application form to receive exit allowance even if you obtain original documents from your home country.
