Having a Voice

2014

Welcome to the first Julia Farr Youth Conference!

You might be wondering who we are? Julia Farr Youth (JFY) is a group of young people, aged 16-30, who live with disability and advocate on issues affecting young people living with disability. JFY is part of JFA Purple Orange, a community organisation that explores how people living with disability can access the good things in life.

Why are we hosting a conference?

We have attended and presented at many youth conferences around Australia. Through these conferences we have gained knowledge, life skills and empowerment. We have become more confident with our own leadership voice, and have met many other young people living with disability who have inspired us. We want to share this with you.

What is the conference about?

This conference is for young people living with disability and professionals interested in empowering young people. All of our conference speakers live with disability and/or work in the disability sector. It will be about all the things that matter to young people living with disability. This includes connecting with other young people, having a voice, living independently, transition skills, and tips about travel and employment. You will have the opportunity to hear other peoples life stories and learn how they navigated some of the tricky things in life.

Conference Program
Personal self-worth and feeling good about yourself
Do you love your disability or does it affect the way you feel about yourself? Everyone faces barriers, personal hang-ups and limitations, but everyone also has talents and skills that can be explored. We will explore how to achieve a positive self-image and the benefits, including increased self-confidence, motivation and ability to achieve your goals and dreams.

The transition to employment, education and life after school

Lets face it, adolescence is tricky for everyone, let alone if you live with disability. Its a time of change and transition that can be both challenging and rewarding as you move towards independence. We will talk about transitioning from school to tertiary education, finding a job, and improving participation. We will also talk about improving links between schools, universities, vocational education and training organisations, job services and organisations that support people living with disability. Lastly, well discuss the importance of work and how to tackle issues including when to disclose your disability, what you are entitled to in the workforce and how you can make mainstream employment work for you.

Living independently and managing your own support

With the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), we will hear a personal account from a young woman making the most of the opportunity to have control and choice in her life by directing her own support and care. We explore flexible options for people and helpful tips that can work for you.

Inclusive education
Equality in education is a natural right. However there are many barriers to the realisation of this. Our aim is to close the gaps. We will explore how we can do this by speaking with experts and listening to personal accounts. We want to develop a culture of inclusion and address barriers to receiving an inclusive education.

Conference Program
Relationships and sexuality
Relationships and sexuality mean different things to people. Were not going to tell you all about the birds and the bees but we will talk to you about healthy relationships to ensure you have the knowledge to make good decisions. Explore values and attitudes, boundaries, self-esteem and confidence, inclusive relationships, where to go for more information and some things that just dont get spoken about!

How sporting and recreation activities can influence communities

Sport and recreation provide opportunities for young people to connect with their local community, make new friends, develop personal interests, new skills and abilities. Sport and recreation can also change the way you feel about yourself and change the way others view living with disability. Hear from people who have used their sporting skills to advocate change.

Travel and how to go about it

Most people want to travel, but dont know how to go about it. There is a lot to consider including access, navigating transport, medications, insurance, services and travelling solo. Learn from people who have faced and overcome these obstacles and enjoyed what the world has to offer.

Moving forward and recommendations from young people

We want to hear from you! What is important to a young person living with disability? What is working and what do you want to see change? Your voice matters and can make a difference. We will take everyones ideas from the conference and we will go talk to the politicians about a real fair go for young people living with disability.
