Bollywood aping hollywood?

Director Vikram Bhatt in an interview with the hindu magazine in 2003 shared his extensive view when asked about the trend o hollywood ilms being made in hindi!"" i you hide the source# you"re a genius$ % would rather trust the process o reverse engineering &remaking a ilm' than doing something indigenious$$ % would be more secure knowing that a particular piece o work has already done well at the box o ice""$$ (ell o course even copying# imitating or adapting re)uires a genius which is apparently not present in everyone$ *o many hollywood ilms have been made into or have been throroughly inspired by highly success ull hollywood ilms that it seems pointless to count the number+ ,onsidering Vikram Bhatt"s opinion # the idea seems logical# lucrative and harmless as a script that is already been success ull could be remade in another language in another part o the world$ But as stated above not everyone possesses the genius o imitating or a using a pro ound idea$ % we try to remember the disastrous hindi remakes o ilms like -he %talian .ob# Bruce /lmighty# 0eservoir Dogs then i reckon that one would say bollywood cannot match up to the level+ But then we also have ilms like 1oi mil gya# 2urder# Baazigar# that have triumphantly con)uered the idea they took and pulled it o realy well$ But the )uestion is what makes bollywood go or hollywood remakes? /nd why it isn"t the other way round? %s it the lack o originality and content that makes people desperate? (ell adaptations are made in hollywood too$ 3ven their ilms are in luenced by other ilms# and so would happen in 4rench ilms# 5erman ilms# .apanese ilms and so on$ %t is the drive to recreate a genius that has been showcased in a di rent cultural context$ %t is an e ort to rebulid the same grand picture on a di erent standard and plat orm$ %t could also be viewed as a way o cultural exhange$ But a one way exchange though+ -he agenda is always not this aesthetic behind remaking a hollywood ilm but i does well# why not take the credit or it then+ But bollywood does not stop at ilms too$ 4ilms are 6ust the part o the picture right now$ 7ou have indian versions o almost all reality shows that run in the west$ 7ou have the idianised versions o /merican %dol# 2asterche # Dancing (ith -he *tars# Big Brother# /merica"s 5ot -alent# and the list goes on$$ -he reason that these shows are returining with subse)uent seasons is evident o the success that they en6oy small screen entertaining people$ / notable mention should be made or the daredevil 3kta 1apoor$ *he took the courage to depict the twilight saga in her own soap style$ 8o wonder a lot o people thought that the show would be a lop$ But unexpectedly it was a hige hit among the audience$$ (hat awaits is now is the %ndian versions o two and a hal men# suits# how i met your mother# in the next 20 years or so$$
