Tourism tops!
By Kate Taylor More than 10,000 visitors have enjoyed a berry good weekend in Bacchus Marsh. The annual Strawberries and Cherries Trail Weekend was so popular that strawberry farm Naturipe Fruits was picked clean on the Saturday and closed, with new event participant The Fruits of Life stepping in to offer strawberry picking on the Sunday. The inaugural $5000 hole-in-one competition at the Bacchus Marsh Golf Club ended without a winner despite the many attempts from visitors with quite a few locals trying their luck as well. Visitors also enjoyed orchard tours, exhibitions, horse and carriage rides, activities throughout the town centre - and a spectacular reworks show sponsored by the Village Shopping Centre. The reworks supplier really outdid themselves and it was a full on display enjoyed by all at Bacchus Hill Winery, said Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association member Tina Seirlis. We would also like to mention the many volunteer groups who supported the event and were able to raise considerable funds for their respective causes. NAB volunteers helped guide visitors through the shopping centre precinct, as well as the Visitor Information Centre for their ongoing support, and also to Rotary for guiding trafc at the reworks event. Without the volunteers coming on board it would not be possible to run the event. Weve had great support from businesses, volunteers, media and community across Bacchus Marsh, along with Major Event Partners, including Moorabool Shire Council, for embracing the event and for helping us to deliver ongoing economic stimulus to the town. The beauty of this event is that it has a strong word of mouth effect and the whole town will continue to benet throughout coming weeks as visitors return with their friends and families and continue to invest in our area. more photos page 15

By Kate Taylor Member for Ballarat East Geoff Howard has announced that he will stand for re-election next year. An electoral boundary review earlier this year saw the name of his current seat changed to Buninyong, and an adjustment of the area it covers. First elected in 1999, Mr Howard said he has not lost his enthusiasm. Since the new State Electorate boundaries have been nalised I have been talking with many people about whether I should contest the seat and I have been encouraged by their responses. The overwhelming view of those I have consulted is that I am the best person to represent the people in the Buninyong Electorate. I have the experience and my sense of enthusiasm and commitment to the job ahead is as strong as ever, he said.

Super ride
A LITTLE Fox Terrier named Mr Man followed more than 100 students from 19 Victorian special schools as they rode through the Wombat State Forest for this years Super Ride. Blackwood Special School Outdoor Education Centre manager Chris Cook said Mr Man trailed the students after they set off from Blackwood for their 66km marathon, earlier this month. Some of the students thought it [the dog] was lost but we told them it would walk itself home once we had left, Mr Cook said. Little did we know that Mr Man ran with the students all the way to Five Ways which is 8.5km in- our rst rest stop on the ride! From that point on we decided Mr Man would become our team mascot for the Super Ride and for the rest of the day he jumped out of our ute at each rest stop to cheer the students on! Mr Cook said the ride this year also included student teacher Jim Anderson who had been working at the centre as an inspiration to students. The students really enjoyed seeing Jim around the Super Ride Route, Mr Cook said. Using a wheelchair accessible bike, he led the entire ride out of Trentham. At the end of the Super Ride each student, teacher and volunteer who participated in any part of the ride receives a gold medal. Whether they helped in the set-up, food catering or marshalling, everyone is recognised for their support and achievements, Mr Cook said. The students wear the medals with pride and honour and they dont normally come off until they are home with their parents! The ride was supported by 40 staff, local police, emergency service and community groups.

Singapore training camp

We believe in choice
At Bacchus Marsh Grammar we believe that one of the important features of a school is the range of choice that can be offered to senior students. At Years 9 and 10 students are able to pursue a range of options to complement a commitment to the core development of numeracy and literacy skills. Some of the exciting new options available for students at Year 9 next year include: The Rise of the Machines 3D Printing, Bioinformatics Cloning our Future, Introduction to Permaculture, and PhotoQuest. The school treats Year 10 to 12 as a block for the purposes of curriculum. This means that students have considerable control and choice over the curriculum they choose at Year 10 and also the ability to undertake accelerated VCE studies with ease. At Years 11 and 12 the school offers an extremely wide range of VCE, VET and VCAL options. It has made the conscious decision to specialise in the provision of the VCE and provide as many options within that framework as possible. This sees it offer over 40 different subjects at both Year 11 and 12. This variety gives students a real chance to tailor subject choices towards post school careers and pathways. The school believes that the VCE is a robust certificate ideal for entry to Australian Universities but equally well recognised overseas for those who may have aspirations to study outside of Australia. The size of the schools VCE cohort also means that multiple classes of many subjects are available, removing many of the issues of timetabling clashes that can reduce choice in smaller schools and cohorts. In 2014 Bacchus Marsh Grammar will have approximately 310 students in the final two years of school. This size of senior community is almost ideal for providing the best mix of choice for students but also maintaining appropriate pastoral care and support for all students. Our more academic students perform at the very highest levels, but the School is exceptionally proud of the way in which our middle students achieve outcomes greater than that which they originally expected. Our students overwhelmingly move into tertiary education on the completion of their secondary schooling, with over 90% being offered their first choice through VTAC. They are to be found in almost all Universities and TAFE Colleges in Victoria, and increasingly interstate and overseas, as well as in numerous private and more specialised tertiary providers. Every year upon graduation, the lasting impressions left by the departing students is that they have had a great and varied time at school, have been taught well and supported well through their good and bad times, and now they move on with hope and confidence, as well as being in possession of the skills, knowledge and habits they will need as they move into a future of their own making.
Students in the 2013 Elite Sports Program that travelled to the Singapore Sports School.

The Bacchus Marsh Grammar School Elite Sports Program is a program aimed at targeting our junior sporting elite at both Years 9 and 10. The program utilises information across all disciplines of sports conditioning and science to aid athletes in developing and or consolidating individual conditioning and recovery programs. In 2013 the program extended itself to incorporate an overseas training and travel experience for our athletes. This took place at the internationally recognised Singapore Sports School in Singapore. The program had a number of components to its high performance structure including; Preparation of the body pre and post flight Education on the demands of being an elite athlete Nutrition and training/ Competition in a foreign country Strength and conditioning when traveling Specific Sports Training Sessions Education and practical application of fatigue and recovery strategies Introduction to Sports Specific International Training Venue Specific training sessions with the Singapore athletes and their coaches pool and hydrotherapy sessions sight-seeing, shopping and tourist adventures in Singapore And a fantastic cultural experience of one of Asias most famous countries. The International Program runs in the July School Holidays and is intended for departure in 2014 on the 29th of June. In 2014 the program will also run a Dance specific training camp in Singapore as well.

If you can imagine it, you can make it

The maker movement is revolutionising rapid prototyping while redefining future industrial design and 21st century jobs. The movement motto is if you can imagine it, you can make it. Understanding that 3D printing technology and imbedded microprocessor systems are key elements of the maker movement. Bacchus Marsh Grammar offers students the opportunity to explore both these emerging fields. Students can elect to build and program their own 3D printer, while having access to a range of commercial printers available for rapid prototyping and larger scale production. Imbedded systems design and programming allows students to embrace the internet of things developing an understanding of mechatronics and programming. We may not be able to predict the future, however we can prepare for it by teaching the skills required for the 21st century.

POOL SAFETY: Know your oblIgatIons

Moorabool Shire Council is reminding property owners that every private swimming pool or spa capable of containing a depth of water exceeding 300mm requires a building permit prior to its installation. The building permit will specify that a childproof safety fence and gate must be built and approved before the swimming pool or spa can be used. The importance of adequate and compliant fencing around home pools and spas cannot be underestimated. Drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for children under 5 years of age in Victoria. Pool fencing significantly reduces the risk of drowning with research showing that the risk of drowning in a fenced pool is about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool. Our children need to be protected from such accidental drowning. Safety Fence Tips Maintain gates and fences regularly to ensure they comply with the Building Regulations. Fit correct safety measures to gates, doors and windows. Make sure no tree branches, pool pumps or pot plants etc are near the safety fence and be sure that anything able to be climbed is not placed in a position where children could climb to gain access to the pool or spa. A safety fence is required if you have an inflatable pool filled with water which is deeper than 300mm. Position any chairs, boxes, pool pumps etc so that they cannot be used to climb the fence to access the pool or spa. Pool and Spa Regulations It is law that swimming pools or spas on private residential properties in Victoria are provided with safety fences to restrict access to the pool or spa. Swimming pools that require safety fences: in-ground pools, above ground pools, hot tubs, Jacuzzis and spas. Any pool or spa fence, gate or door must be maintained in good working order. All gates and doors providing access to a pool or spa must have self-closing and self-latching devices and open away from the pool even pools and spas built before laws were introduced in 1991 to make fencing compulsory. It is an offence to prop open any gate or door providing access to a pool or spa. FINES The Building Act 1993 contains penalties for pool owners who install a pool or spa and fail to carry out work in accordance with the Act.

Fire season around the corner

By Ebonnie Kombani CLEAN up your properties now- is the pressing message Bacchus Marsh CFA group ofcer Gerry Lavery wants Moorabool residents to hear loud and clear. December is getting too late, so if you havent already- start raking leaves, cleaning your gutters and burning off before the re restrictions come in, Mr Lavery said. He said thanks to some help from the State Government, his CFA group, along with others in Moorabool, had been able to purchase and upgrade some of their equipment. It is always better to be prepared for the worst case scenario, so there are no nasty surprises, Mr Lavery said. The government match what CFA and other emergency service volunteers raise dollar-for-dollar. A month ago Parwan received a brand new 24C tanker and with the recent funding we will upgrade our forward command vehicle. This year the State Government is allocating $12.23 million to 300 Victorian emergency service groups who are part of the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP). This includes more than $80,000 to Bacchus Marsh SES for light rescue. Western Victoria Region MP Simon Ramsay said it was a record amount level of funding. Volunteers are an essential part of any emergency response, Mr Ramsay said. Without the support of volunteers, we would not be able to respond effectively to emergencies - oods, bushres, storms or road accidents.

A century of baiting the hook

FOR 100 years the Ballan Angling Club has shed in Moorabool waters including Ballan Reservoir, Pykes Creek, and Bostock reservoirs. Thanks to dedicated shermen and women of the anglers club, and more recently the State Governments sheries department, thousands and thousands of trout have been released into these waterways each year for locals to catch. Club president Des Hodge said when the club formed in 1913 it started to stock the local streams to encourage poachers to become active members of the club. It was also to help with tourism in the area, Mr Hodge Snr said at the clubs centenary celebration, recently. Mr Hodge said he remembers helping dig the ponds for the clubs hatchery when he was 12 years old. My great grandfather, one of the original founding members of the club, Harry George won the rst shing competition for the heaviest sh, a whopping 6lb 2oz at Pykes Reservoirthis still holds the record today. Over the years the club membership has uctuated, but again it is running steadily- the early members did well to keep the club going during the war and depression years. Now thriving, the club has 27 members, including juniors, and is part of the Ballarat and District Anglers Association. At the celebration, mad sherman, great, great grandson of founding member and the presidents son, Dean Hodge was incorporated as a life member. The club has just completed a book entitled The History of the Ballan Anglers Club, copies have sold out, but more are on the way. The club now plans to raise money to get two historical minute books properly bound. to form an angling club. Doctor A. Blaubaum was voted president. The Ballarat Fish Protection Society and Ballarat Anglers Club were also present at the meeting.

Preparing Harry for summer

The Friends of the Werribee River through Bacchus Marsh is preparing to hold another working bee along their local waterway. The group holds working bees every second month to weed and plant a section of the riverbank. Volunteer Marika Ley said there are jobs to suit any age and level of tness with morning teas and lunches provided. At the last few working bees up to 40 people attended and accomplished a lot in the three hours, she said. The next working bee is scheduled for Sunday 24 November, 9:30am at Harrys Hole. The purpose of this working bee is to spruce up the popular summer swimming spot. Harrys Hole is upstream from Stoneys Pub in Maddingley. Enquiries to gregory.k.ley@gmail.com.

1913 - October 27 a public meeting was held in Ballan

1915-1932 - The club was involved in trout stocking of local waterways. 1919 - Cormorant birds were causing problems with the regions fish stock. Notes: it took the Fisheries and Game Department 11 months to consider action, which resulted in shootings being organised to keep the numbers down. 1933 - A big flood swept through Moorabool. There was 13 inches recorded in 18 hours north of Blakeville. Notes: bait fishing and spinning was impossible in Pykes due to the water being like pea soup and the surface a floating mass of debris. Even so a 2lb trout was landed using frog bait. 1955 - An AGM was held including surrounding clubs of Meredith, Newtown, Ballarat, Ballarat Acclimatisation, Ballarat and District Association, and Bolwarrah.

1958 - A hatchery was built at Blakeville. For 30 2000 brown trout fry and 1000 rainbow trout fry were purchased from the Ballarat Acclimatisation Society. 1959 - In August 950 Brown Yearlings, 650 Rainbow Yearlings, and 350 Brown Yearling Trout were liberated into Moorabool waterways from the hatchery. In November, due to contamination in the waterway, 5000 fish died at the hatchery. This cost the club approximately 50. 1963 - Mrs Jean Hume won the perpetual trophy for the heaviest fish at the Ballarat and district Anglers Club championships. 1964-2003 - The following members were presented with Life Memberships for the club: D.Lennox, S.Hyatt, K.Parker, M.Bolton, I. The history continues

IT all started when word got out Swan Hill Folk Museum was going to take The Marshs historic sandstone holding cells, 45 years ago. Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society life member Wendy Vearing said a group of locals got together to ght for their cells and in doing so formed a society. The cells belonged in the Marsh! Ms Vearing said. It is extremely important for the community to know and respect its history. It gives us a chance to learn so much and hopefully learn from our mistakes. Almost half a century later, Ms Vearing said the societys biggest woe was it could not accept all artifacts presented to it because there was no room. She said the society had items at the Blacksmiths Cottage and archives at the Lerderderg Library, but these places were becoming overcrowded. We collect stuff, we dont reduce, she said. It is hard to say no to people who hand you historical artifacts - we really need a space for a museum. Getting down to history Ms Vearing, who lives in Myrniong and is in her 70s, said so much had changed in the Marsh since the society was established. The Marsh has grown from 3500 in population to now more than 17,000, a vast change from a rural place to an outer suburban place, Ms Vearing said. There is a huge amount of work the volunteers are doing at the moment to collect and record information about occupants of properties in the Bacchus Marsh township-using old newspapers, land titles and shire rate books (if you can get a hold of them!) Im not good at any of those things - I am more of a collector. Ms Vearing said aside from the well-known William Bacchus story about how the town was established, she fondly remembered some of the quirky tales from an old society member Jack Vallance who has since passed away. He was from an Irish dairy farm-he would tell us the only free time for a young dairy farmer was on moonlit nights! Ill never forget his story about the man who was climbing the old Life Guard Milk Factory chimney (where the Village is now) and had a heart attack at the top- the body was stuck up there! She also said there had never been much said about the Indigenous people living in the area. You know there wasnt much mentioned in the Bacchus story other than some mention that it was too cold for people to live here, Ms Vearing said. Im not sure if I believe that as there would have been plenty of people because there have been plenty of food with the marshy area. From what I have read in some of the old settlers diaries, some of the early settlers did not treat the Indigenous people very well. Ms Vearing is one of three of the 30 original society members still working hard to preserve and record history, along with Christina Hallett and Sue Woods. The society celebrated its 45th birthday on October 4. Rock and Casserole!

Gordon Primary recently hosted a Rock n Roll Casserole night for members of the school and wider community. The event was held in the Gordon Town Hall with families contributing an array of delicious casseroles, which helped feed young and old. There were games and lucky dip prizes for the children as well as a wide selection of silent auction items, kindly donated by local businesses. Local musicians, Tim Nelson, Neil Harrison and Tony and Sharon Jury also donated their time (and their talent) by performing on stage and getting everyone up and dancing. The Rock n Roll Casserole night raised approx $1500.

Since then we have seen a few people continuing to push a campaign of misconceptions about Woolpack. For example, regarding trafc congestion within Bacchus Marsh. Councils own independent Trafx survey proved Woolpack was not the solution to this issue. Anyone driving along Gisborne Road and Grant Street at peak hour, school times, on Saturday mornings understands that nding. It is a local car trafc issue. Immediately after the Woolpack announcement the Avenue Preservation Group briefed the thenCouncil. The extension of Hallets Way was pointed out as the proven solution for local trafc congestion. Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au growing up in the late 70s, it was a regular occurrence during the summer months to get a visit every night from the ice cream man, I loved it, but I also knew I couldnt have it. Did I feel left out? No not really, I just knew I couldnt have it, and that was that. It was a rule I was taught and I just accepted it. Did my parents feel sorry for me missing out? Yes probably but I really dont remember taking that much notice. But I do know for sure that they didnt write to their local newspaper begging the ice cream man not to Dear Editor, To the person complaining about lollies being thrown from CFA truck at Christmas (MN 5 Nov) heres a thought. Maybe instead of complaining, you could donate lollies of your choice and volunteer time to make up lolly bags for these wonderful volunteers to distribute in your street. Kylie Webster Via facebook Dear Editor, It would seem the Dear Santa letter (MN 5 Nov 2013) has raised a few emotions. As a milk sensitive child come around... instead they chose to educate him along with my friends and family. You see the thing is, its all about communication and a little bit of education. Local CFA crews dedicate their time every year on Christmas Eve to spread the Christmas Spirit. Its a long running tradition to which children and adults alike get excited about. A friendly suggestion would be this: go and see them, explain your concerns, teach them about your childs condition...its as simple as that. Ballan CFA train on a Mon-

Family Home! Fantastic Location

Dream is still a reality

Decide on your preferred suburbs and research prices for the kind of home you hope to buy. Find them on the internet, attend the auctions and see what they sell for. Get to know the local agents and talk about what you can afford and what is available. Also, median prices are available free at reiv.com. au /P r op er t y-Re s e a rc h / Median-Prices. If your preferred area is beyond your reach dont despair. Consider your options: can family members help you raise a larger deposit? Can tighter budgeting mean you can afford to pay a little more? How about considering property on the border of your preferred area, but cheaper. For example, a three bedroom house in Lara has a median price of $305,000 while in neighbouring Corio it is $221,000. And hold onto your dream dont be deterred by the publicity. After all, there are still suburbs cheaper than during boom times and many banks are willing to lend a higher proportion of the purchase price.

Houses in this area seldom come up for sale. A private court location within walking distance to the Main Street. This 4 bedroom 2 bathroom home is very well presented and offers a great opportunity for the astute buyer. The main bedroom has WIR and Ensuite,&

remaining 3 have BIRs. The home has 3 living areas, a formal lounge at the front, a chef friendly kitchen adjoining the open plan family room and a theatre/rumpus room at the back. The decked alfresco area has sliding door access to both the family room and rumpus room, which brings

the outside in. The home is serviced by a reverse cycle split system air conditioner in the living space and you have double garage with direct access to the house. This as new home is on the market at a very reasonable price of $435,000.

Enzo Raimondo CEO, REIV

For those dreaming of owning their rst home it has been a nervous week. For some, the new Australian Bureau of Statistics gures may suggest that dream may be out of reach. They showed the proportion of rst home buyers in the housing market at its lowest level since those records began 22 years ago. But while there are housing affordability concerns, rst home buyers need not abandon hope. Interest rates are at a record low, with the Reserve Bank cash rate just 2.5 per cent. So this is an excellent time to obtain cheap nance and start repaying your mortgage with lower repayments. Despite the publicity about rst-time buyers, there are still affordable properties out there if you know where to look. The key is research.

tional Day of Action on Climate Change and there are towns and cities throughout Australia who held picnics and gatherings on this day to remind the government, as the 134 groups above, this time to honour the ndings of the United Nations and take immediate and far-reaching action on climate change. *** A topic of growing interest to farmers and horticulturalists is Biochar - because of its potential to improve crop productivity, especially on poorer soils. Many claim however, the most important potential benet of Biochar is its ability to store carbon in the soil in a very stable way, that can off-set Carbon Dioxide emissions from farming and other human activities. Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by heating organic material at a high temperature in limited oxygen. It can be produced at any scale from back-yard drum-burners, to massive reactors suited to farm or urban industrial units, using waste products of manufacturing or garbage. It can be made from wood or sawdust, poultry feathers or litter, or other wastes such as fruit pip, nut shells, or paper by-products. Studies so far have shown that the greatest positive effects of Biochar are in degraded, acidic or nutrientdepleted soils common in many areas of Australia. The potential for storage of carbon in soils through Biochar is enormous. Dr Tim Flannery has said Biochar may represent the single most important initiative for humanitys environmental and agricultural future. The local oganisations Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions has combined with Central Highlands Agribusiness Forum to bring international experts on Biochar to run a hands-on Two day workshop at the Federation University Farm on Creswick Road on the weekend of 23-24 November. *** It seems there is a proposed broiler factory in Bacchus Marsh with 500,000 chooks in sheds, as one local person stated it was, mass production of the worst kind. According to one company who operates broiler farms, One chicken house can typically accommodate 45,000 chickens, with a to-

In the Sydney Morning Herald the other week a letter was written to the new Prime Minister under the heading, A joint appeal to the Prime Minister about the use of the term illegal maritime arrivals. The letter reminded the Prime Minister that seeking asylum is not illegal under Australian or international law. I mention this because at the end of this paid advertisement was a list of groups who had backed this letter. There were 134 groups ranging from religious to civil to environmental groups. There is energy in our community and it is on the rise and it will not be beaten down by vested interests or compromised politicians. And there is energy for environmental matters. November 17 has been declared a Natal body mass of 120,000 kilos. During a single growing batch, these chickens will consume 200 tonnes of feed, drink 600,000 litres of water and produce 30 tonnes of chicken manure. Sounds like good business sense and the gures are impressive. Lets look at it another way. According to Jonathan Safran Foer in Eating Animals (Hamish Hamilton, Australia, 2009) broiler chickens make esh not eggs and owing to clever engineering, broiler chickens now grow more than twice as large and in less than half the time as their forbears did. They once had a life expectancy of fteen to twenty years but the modern broiler is typically killed at around six weeks. Their daily growth rate has increased roughly 400 percent. And they are conned to a space of an A4 sheet of paper for the whole of their miserable existence. Dr Lesley Rogers, a prominent animal physiologist, argues that our present knowledge of bird brains has made it clear that birds have cognitive capabilities equivalent to those of mammals, even primates. Then there is the recent research indicating putting a species together, like chickens, in such conned space is encouraging such things as bird u and the potential of its effect on the local towns, in this case Bacchus Marsh. What is your opinion? Next Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) meeting - Tuesday 26th November 7.30pm End of year BBQ, 131 Hallets Way, Darley. All Welcome.

Boomerangs, Dolphins and Eagles represented by boys and girls teams in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups. All athletes participated in a 4x100 metre and 4x200 metre relay, whilst each Club provided one boys and girls Intermediate and Senior medley team. The highlight of the Relay Challenge was the inclusion of a parents race. The female 4x100m parent relay was closely contested by eight teams with the lead changing several times, nishing with a hotly contested nal leg. The mens 4x100m parent relay exhibited some athletic talent and the Boomerangs, who were favourites to take line honours, did not disappoint their supporters as they crossed the line comfortable victors, from a fast nishing Eagles team, as Blues tried desperately to minimise the gap, and the Dolphins crossed the line in fourth place. Presentations from the previous weeks Centre Multi Event were held during the Club Relay Challenge. All Multi Event athletes also received a participation certicate with results and nal placing.

Club Relay Challenge Instead of the regular track and eld program last week, Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics introduced a new event to their season calendar, conducting a Club Relay Challenge Day. Athletes were allocated to teams, according to grading results, with each Club; Blues,

Bacchus Marsh Lawn Bowls

Lord Street The only way to describe Bacchus Marshs Division 1 trip to Gisborne was tough. On a very slow green, the Marsh began well, leading by over 20 shots at one stage, but tapered off before lunch and only heading to the break 1 shot up, with Amy Glourys rink the only leading one at 16-5. From there it was a hard slog, but Bacchus got the job done, with Justin Webster only allowing 3 shots after tea to win 24-15 and Amy pulling further away for her rst ever win as skip, 29-10. Dylan Filuk and Alan Maher both hit the front late in the match, but Gisborne rallied, taking both rinks 32-22 and 27-20 respectively. Division 2 hosted Gisborne, and it was a very good win that eventuated. Skips Joan Connor, Sue Banks and Helen and Barry Steinholdt all won by large margins to combine for a 50+ shot win, which keeps them in touch with the top 4. Division 3 continued their stellar start to the year, defeating previously unbeaten Kyneton Red by 2 rinks to 1 and 17 shots to go clear on top of the ladder. The Division Singles rst day was held on Sunday and from ve entries Bacchus Marsh has Alan Maher in the Semi Finals.

Roaring deal
There has many a partnership at the crease for Darley Cricket club but at the business end, a new partnership has begun. A new sponsorship deal will see local supermarket Bacchus Marsh Foodworks as the clubs major sponsor over the next three seasons. Secretary DCC Jim OShea said Foodworks, owned and operated by Alex Ng and Sue Lau, are renowned for their continued and generous support of local sporting and community groups. This comes at a time where the Club is advancing both on and off the eld. Darley is the only Turf Wicket Club in the Shire, and we are looking at an exiting year ahead after a fantastic 2012-13 season. This generous sponsorship will greatly assist the club, enabling us to keep fees and associated costs at an affordable level, Mr OShea said. Last season the club captured the Under 12, Under 14, and Fourth XI Premierships. Mr OShea said off eld the club are buoyed by a new committee dedicated to growing the club and establishing an enviable position amongst the best clubs in the region.

Results Premier Division hosted Highton and with a revamped line up was on the front foot early. At the end of the day the Avenue side rose to the challenge winning three of the four rinks, losing the other by only two shots to win by 38 shots. Final result - Avenue 115 def Highton 77 Division 3 travelled to Webbcona in a contest between two similarly placed teams on the ladder. Scoresremained close all day, with Avenue being able to outlast their opponents to win by 8 shots. Avenue won three of the four rinks whilst the fourth rink managed a draw. Final score - Avenue 89 def Webbcona 81 Division 5 hosted Central Wendouree with the visitors taking it right up to Avenue. Fortunately for Avenue, Lyn Robinsons rink had a day out winning by 21 shots, which thankfully was enough to cover the other three rinks. Final score - Avenue 89 def Central Wendouree 84 Players in Division 9 were nally able to get on the green after receiving three walkovers in the rst six matches and despite having to travel to Beaufort Golf to play on a slowish green, all rinks performed admirably for the side to win by 39 shots.
