IDENTIFYING 6 WOMEN/MEN WOMEN WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED IMMENSELY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF BROADCASTING MEDIA

THE INNOVATORS OF BOTH TV AND RADIO


The innovators of both television and radio have a great contribution in the radio and television field of today. They set the standard for both television and radio that continues to challenge and inspire todays media newspersons. The innovators that I will be focusing on are Edward R. Murrow, David Sarnoff, Ted Tuner and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. I chose these four innovators because it looks like they have played a much productive role compared to the rest. These people media was indeed their lifestyle. They could do anything for media and society. They used media as a source of education and more people across the world followed their media news because they were believed to be accurate.

Edward R. Murrow
He was a media tycoon who had a passion for television journalism. Sperber, (1994) reveals that his calm and courageous reporting captured the nations and the worlds attention during the German Blitz of Great Britain in 1940 & 1941. He began his career in 1926 and set in motion a serious of important events that will mould him into a great journalist. He attended three separate universities with the intention of acquiring more information about the television journalism. He was one of the active students who had passion for media industry.

In his studies he was majoring in speech. These lead him to be elected the president of the student organization and expanded its activities by visiting hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and Europe. The organization assisted him to contribute a lot into the television field. He started to establish a travel bureau and arranged international student debates relevant to the television broadcasting. These debates and workshops helped people across the world to recognise the value of television. He also persuaded the Broadcasting services of Columbia to air a program entitle A university of the Air Sperber, (1994). He was able to recruit such well known personages around America and Europe to appear on the programme. These encouraged people to watch the program very much because they were interested in hearing the celebrities being interviewed.

He has done a lot of travelling and it gave him a chance to meet different people from different walks of lifestyles. He organised numerous television conferences that attracted all the universities. The main aims of the conferences were to tackle issues of television broadcasting in the globe. Indeed Edward R. Murrow have a significance in the television field because he have made all the media people to interact and learn the skills and all necessary information in the world of media.

David Sarnoff He is one of the heroes who have transformed the way people received information. From his humble beginnings as the man who first spread the news of the sinking Titanic via telegraph to his creation of television. His employers including Radio Corp of America were happy to have him on board as he virtually made them to be one of the successful companies today. His first job was when he was still a young boy selling newspapers. He had the foresight to buy a telegraph key at the age of 15,which he learned how to operate and secured more positions. He became a junior operator for a telegraph company and thus began his career in the communications business. He was also the first to distribute news of the Titanic to the world. He sent messages to people about its sinking how people were affected.

He also played a role in bringing up music into wirelessly. His next big idea was to take the radio, then being used mainly in shipping and turn it into something that could be used by the general public in their homes,, much like a pianos or phonographs. The other major contribution that he did to radio broadcasting was when he formed the National Broadcating Company. The main aim was to be successful in selling his radios. Sarnoff knew that he needed to create programs that people could listen to and be entertained by. To solve this problem he created national broadcasts by stringing together hundreds of stations. David Sarnoff s innovation ,persistence and skills contributed both to radio and television and we see television operating using the skills that he innovated.

TED TUNER
He is an America media mogul. He is known as the founder of the cable news network, the first dedicated 24-hour cable news. He also founded the concepts used in cable television. Turners media empire began with his fathers billboards business. He started his outdoor Advertising Company. He also purchased a radio station called Atlanta UHF station in 1970. Then he began Tuner Broadcasting System. It was a cable news network revolutionized news media and covering the media departments of different broadcasting companies. He contributed to radio by introducing sports talk shows that grabbed peoples attention especially who have interests in sports. He formed numerous media companies in order to promote radio broadcasting across the world.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt


He was once the president of the America in the year 1933 to 1945. People loved him because they believed he was implementing a variety of innovation policies. He played a great role when working with media. He gave people the information about presidency, political issues and providing critical insight for the nations governance challenges. These all was done via television broadcasting because he was one of the innovators who worked with other media in the world. His passion for television updated people with all the news because his speeches were covered by the media. He believed in press release of every day because he wanted people to follow media industry. He also used to organise oral history of broadcasts in order to educate people. He liked presidential recordings program because they encouraged the society to be listen to his speeches.

He took media as a tool that can globalise his country. He really played a role because more people started having televisions and more televisions companies were formed.
