Living With the Law By Anna Le, Akshay Singh, Charleen Muyot, David Chisley Scene 1 Imagine yourself...

You are late to class, and your friend comes out of no where and puts something in your backpack. You: Hey! What are you doing Josh!? Josh: I need you to hold something for me! My hands and my backpack are full! He smiles and runs off to his class. You: Uhhh okay. Scene 2 Class is about to end, and you are excited to go home. All of the sudden, two police officers walk in the classroom. The room gets quiet as the teacher is talking to the authorities. Teacher has a worried look on her face. Teacher: Class, please remain seated and quiet. There has been a report of drugs being on campus and we believe its someone from this class. Police: Please dont be alarmed. It is better if you allow us to properly search through your bags, the faster this goes, the faster you'll get to go home. The two police officers begin to search bags and you are the last person to get their belongings searched through. You (thinking): Looks like no one has the drugs in the class. I guess I get to go home sooner than I thought! The police officer comes over to you and starts going through your belongings. He pulls out a paper lunch bag and looks in it.

Police: We found the drugs! You look astonished. You: Wait!!! WHAT?! Teacher: Okay, everyone is thoroughly searched. Class is dismissed. You: Whats going on? This isnt mine! Its probably Joshs! It's Josh's! Police: Okay, you are going to have to come with us. Questions to the class: What amendment does this fall under? Is it constitutional for teachers or police officers search through your belongings? Scene 3 You are at the police station and you are being accused of possessing 1/2 lb of marijuana on school property. No one believes that you are innocent. Under the habeas corpus, you are allowed to be brought into court. Your court date is next week. You have a decision to make. You can either A. Find Josh and make him confess or B. Take matters into your own hand A- go to scene 3a. B- go to scene 3b. Scene 3a. You are at Joshs house, and you ring the door. Joshs mom answer the door. You: Hi, is Josh home? Mom: Yes, hes home, would you like to come inside? You go inside and you are now sitting on the couch in the living room. Josh comes in and greets you with disgust. Josh: Why are you here? You: What do you mean? You got me in trouble, Josh! You put the (you whisper) drugs in my bag. Josh: Do you have proof that I did? You: What? Why are you doing this? Josh: I didnt do anything wrong. I never put anything in your bag.

You have a decision to make. You can, A. Be sympathetic and nice to Josh or B. Get angry A - go to scene 3aa. B- go to scene 3ab. Scene 3aa. You: I just wanna know why you put it in bag. Why me, I thought we were friends!? Did you know that the big guys knew about the weed? Josh: You wanna know why I put it there? Its because I hate you. I hate your guts. Youre a privileged teen who grew up with everything. You have both parents who love you, you live in a nice big home, you get everything you want, and never in a day of your life since Ive known you in pre-k have you worked hard for anything. You: If you hated me, you could have jumped me or something. Why do this? Josh: Because you deserved every bit of punishment. I know you cant get out of this one. You: I-I-I dont understand.. Josh: What is there to understand? You: Josh, is this about your dad? Josh is silent. You: Im sorry.. I should have paid more attention. I guess youre right about the stuff you said about me.. You dont deserve all the things that have been happening to you.. Joshs dad physically abused him in middle school since his dad lost his job. After Josh got into high school, his dad committed suicide. You always knew this about Josh, but for some reason, you ignored all his cries for help and decided to give a blind eye to his situation. You feel remorse and regret. Josh: Dont act like that now. Dont you think its a little too late? You: I know all these years Ive been acting like a real jerk, a real d-bag to you especially, and youre right about all that stuff.. Im sorry I wasnt there for you.. I guess.. I couldnt possibly understand anything that has happened to you.. Josh is silent.

You: Im sorry.. You leave his house. Go to scene 4a. Scene 3ab. You: Youve got to be kidding me. Are you freakin serious? Josh: Im serious. You grab Josh, and you become furious with rage. You: YOU ARE GOING TO CONFESS IN MY CIVIL CASE TO PUTTING WEED IN MY BAG!! IF YOU DONT CONFESS, I WILL HURT YOU!! BELIEVE IT!! You punch Josh in the face, kicked down his door, and left his house. Go to scene 4b. Scene 3b. You are at Joshs house, and you ring the door. You: HEY!!! JOSH! I KNOW YOURE THERE! Dogs barking, Josh opens the door and slams it in your face. You: Hey!! Josh!! You kick down the door. You grab Josh. You: YOU ARE GOING TO CONFESS IN MY CIVIL CASE TO PUTTING WEED IN MY BAG!! IF YOU DONT CONFESS, I WILL HURT YOU!! BELIEVE IT!! You punch Josh in the face and leave. Go to scene 4b.

Scene 4a. You are at court. Josh has not shown up yet causing you to worry. Judge: Do you have any witnesses? You: I guess nYou are interrupted by a door opening. Josh: Im a witness!

Bailiff: Do you swear that the testimony you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God. Josh:I solemnly declare that I will speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Judge: You may proceed. Josh: I was the one who placed 1/2 of marijuana in (points to you) his bag. I took the marijuana from my older brother, and I plotted against the plaintiff for personal reasons. It was a Friday afternoon. I saw the plaintiff was late for class as he was walking to his 7th period. I quickly put it in his bag, then I went to the admins office and snitched on him. You are surprised that Josh told the truth. Go to Scene 5 Scene 4b. You are at court. Josh is there, and you are excited to finally receive justice. Josh is at the witness stand. Josh appears to have a black eye. Bailiff: Do you swear that the testimony you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God. Josh:I solemnly declare that I will speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Judge: You may proceed. Josh: I was at home on Sunday, it was about 12:45PM. That person (points to you) kicked down my door, gave me a black eye, and threatened me to come here and confess to his wrongdoings. I even have a voice recording of what happened. You are surprised by whats happening. You: W-w-wait! This isnt apart of the due process law! The voice recording plays.

You: YOU ARE GOING TO CONFESS IN MY CIVIL CASE TO PUTTING WEED IN MY BAG!! IF YOU DONT CONFESS, I WILL HURT YOU!! BELIEVE IT!! There is a loud sound that resembles a door being knocked down. Judge: The plaintiff did not provide a reason to his crime. He was in possession of 1/2 pounds of marijuana on school property, assaulted and injured a boy, damaged private property, and tried to frame another person for his own crimes. The plaintiff is hereby sentenced to 1 month in juvenile hall. The judge pounds the gavel. Judge: Court is adjourned. END. Scene 5 Josh is in handcuffs and you run up to him. You: Thanks for doing this Josh... Josh: No problem. Josh smiles at you as he is being taken away. Apart of you feels sad and regretful of what happens to Josh, but at the same time you feel a sense of justice. At least now, you and Josh can now be friends. END. Question: Did you deserve a fair trial and Answer: According to the Sixth Amendment, "a citizen accused of a crime has the right to a jury trial that is both public and 'speedy'." Question: What acts did you do to Josh that did not abide the First Amendment? Answer: You kicked down Josh's door ( private property) and attacked him (life).

Question: Was it right for Josh to record you without your consent? Under what amendment is it allowed? Answer: You are allowed to record someone's voice/conversation without their consent as it does not invade their privacy.
