Township welcomes
home veterans
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
There may not be any town in
South Jersey that puts on a better
welcome home for its veterans
than Medford.
Medford Townships Returning
Veterans Committee has had a
deep impact on the community in
just a few short years of exis-
tence.
Nino DePasquale, the chair-
man of the committee, said Med-
ford is one of the few towns that
has a committee that focuses
specifically on welcoming home
returning veterans.
Its an acknowledgment of
Medfords real dedication to their
veterans, he said.
DePasquale, a Vietnam veter-
an, was appointed the chairman
of the committee when the coun-
cil formed it four years ago. Since
then, he and a group of about 10
volunteers have been organizing
welcome home events for veter-
ans from the township as well as
surrounding towns.
Most of the year, the commit-
tees work deals with organizing
welcome home ceremonies for
military personnel. Families will
let the committee know that a vet-
eran will be coming back from ac-
tive service. DePasquale and the
other volunteers arrange every
detail of the event from there.
We basically host the welcome
home celebration and pull togeth-
er all the parts, DePasquale said.
Most ceremonies consist of the
veteran being surprised either at
home or another location. The
committee will call everyone
from police and fire to the War-
rior Watch Riders and the South
Jersey Yellow Ribbon Club to
make the day special.
The family agrees to surpris-
ing the veteran, DePasquale
said. Well show up and surprise
the veteran and then well escort
them to another location. Then,
well reward the veteran with
medals and proclamations.
The committee also participat-
ed in events outside of Medford.
DePasquale said that when veter-
ans return home in neighboring
towns such as Mt. Laurel, Med-
ford Lakes and Marlton, they
work with the towns on the wel-
come home celebration.
We cooperate with adjoining
municipalities, he said. If we
know theyre welcoming home a
veteran, well coordinate and at-
tend.
The committees work goes be-
yond welcoming veterans home.
Last week, in honor of Veterans
Day, about 30 veterans visited his-
tory classes at Shawnee High
School, telling stories about their

C
ontroversy surrounds almost
every bill that is proposed at
the state government level. If
the actual effects of the bill dont come
in question, then the partisanship of
it, or the motivation behind it, are
often scrutinized.
But a bill that was proposed recently
by state Sen. Richard Codey doesnt fit
into that category, at least in the world
according to us.
Codeys bill would expand New Jer-
seys distracted driving law to include
drivers who are temporarily stopped
whether in a traffic jam, red light or
stop sign. Basically, it would ban all
use of a cell phone while a person is
seated in the drivers seat of a vehicle.
The bill would also require the written
drivers test to include questions on
distracted driving.
When explaining his position on the
bill, Codey referred to the states DUI
law: If youre at a red light and youre
drunk, youre DUI, he said.
Makes perfect sense to us. Drivers
can be distracted, and cause major ac-
cidents, even if they are temporarily
stopped. How many times have you
seen other drivers because youve
never done this, right? hurriedly ac-
celerate at a light after they realize,
when they look up from their phone,
that the light has turned green? Situa-
tions like this can cause accidents.
Opponents of the bill, if they can be
considered this, are saying that the
true motives behind the bill are ques-
tionable. Even Codey admitted to this,
at least partially, saying that the real
aim of the bill is to put New Jersey in
line with federal standards for the Dis-
tracted Driving Grant Program. Cur-
rently, the states law isnt in line with
these standards, so it doesnt qualify
for grants.
To that, we say: Who cares?
Who cares if the motive behind en-
hancing New Jerseys distracted driv-
ing law is to receive federal grant
money? That money would be put to
use to educate and discourage people
from driving distracted.
Its not Codeys fault, or the Legisla-
tures fault, that the federal govern-
ment requires certain standards to re-
ceive grant money. Since that money
will go to good use, we should do what
is necessary to get it.
The only thing that should matter
here is the safety of those on the road,
and this bill enhances that safety.
in our opinion
Get off your phone!
Legislature should pass bill to ban phone usage for drivers
Your thoughts
How do you feel about enhanced dis-
tracted driving laws? Is it enough?
Should more be done? Are legislators
taking it too far? Share your thoughts

Unmotivated employees spur
others to act the same
During the last decade of my profession-
al career, I had the privilege of being re-
sponsible for 15 companies, all of them, to
varying degrees, involved in everything
from manufacturing, distribution, sales
and marketing all over the world.
There is nothing more difficult in any
managerial position than letting people go.
But that is something that comes with the
"territory, and if you are not prepared to
do just that, you should be doing something
else for a living.
Ultimately, it's a matter of your job or
theirs.
You are the "hired gun" to do whatever it
takes to make the companies profitable and
to survive in what is often a brutal competi-
tive environment.
To face that challenge, like in any other
private enterprise that wants to stay in
business, we had to let go of anywhere
from 5-10 percent of the employee base,
every year, year after year.
Management guru Jack Welch of Gener-
al Electric, named CEO of the century, had
as his policy that managers, at all levels,
had to get rid of the 10 percent bottom per-
formers each year. And he stuck with this
policy until the day he retired. During his
tenure, he drove the company from a ho-
hum company, to the No. 1 position in the
world.
When I think back on these times, I say
to myself Wow, had we not done what we
did, over time we would have ended up
with an organization populated by unmoti-
vated, incompetent idiots.
It should come as no surprise to anyone
that in this regard, I'm thinking about gov-
ernment.
Any sign in any organization that you
can survive doing a mediocre job spreads
like wildfire. The attitude is, if he can get
away with it, why should I be busting it?
The end result is a downward spiral in per-
formance.
On the other hand, if everyone around
you is working hard, delivering results, day
after day, you'll be strongly motivated to do
the same.
You don't have to be a human relations
specialist to see that. It's just common
sense.

The following information has
been provided by the Medford
Township Police Department.
At 5:51 p.m. on Nov. 4, Medford
Township Police were dispatched
to a "hit and run" motor vehicle
crash in Sharps Run Plaza on
Route 70. The reporting party ob-
served a black pickup truck col-
lide with a parked motor vehicle
and drive away. A vehicle descrip-
tion and license plate was provid-
ed to the responding officer.
At 6:06 p.m., police were dis-
patched to an unconscious sub-
ject sitting in a black pickup
truck stopped in the lane of travel
at Stokes Road and Schoolhouse
Drive. Police identified the driver
as a 28-year-old male of Brecken-
ridge Drive in Shamong Town-
ship.
During the investigation, po-
lice observed a loaded Colt .357
Magnum handgun wedged be-
tween the passenger front seat
and center console. The weapon
was loaded with prohibited hol-
low-point bullets. The male was
subsequently arrested by police
without incident.
He was issued numerous motor
vehicle violations for driving
while intoxicated, reckless driv-
ing, leaving the scene of an acci-
dent and failure to report an acci-
dent; in addition to criminal com-
plaints for the unlawful posses-
sion of a handgun, possession of
hollow point bullets and posses-
sion of drug paraphernalia. His
bail was set at $44,000 with 10 per-
cent authorized.
On Nov. 8, a resident of Tama-
rac reported to police their vehi-
cle had been entered and rum-
maged through. Police responded
to Tallowood Drive and discov-
ered that a total of 11 vehicles had
been burglarized throughout the
evening hours. Residents had
GPS devices, sunglasses, iPods
and miscellaneous property
stolen from their unlocked vehi-
cles.
Police continued to canvas the
area and discovered a disabled
motor vehicle on Tuckerton Road
near Marquette Drive. Police be-
lieved the vehicle had run out of
gas and the driver attempted to
put diesel fuel into the vehicle fur-
ther rendering it inoperable.
Police also noted that one of
the victims on Tallowood report-
ed an exterior diesel fuel contain-
er on their property had been
tampered with, thus making the
operator of this vehicle a likely
suspect. A search warrant was
obtained and evidence, including
drug paraphernalia, weapons and

The Sun
Residents who live along Jen-
nings Road in Medford left last
weeks Council meeting happy, as
Council decided to look at alter-
natives to re-opening the road to
through traffic.
The Councils decision came
after Township Engineer Dante
Guzzi reported that he had some
concerns about re-opening the
road to public traffic.
Jennings Road runs from
Route 70 to Hartford Road. It was
closed to through traffic with bar-
ricades 15 years ago. Council
wanted to examine whether re-
opening the road would be viable
with a new development,
Heritage, opening along the
road.
The report from Guzzi showed
a number of issues that would
take time and resources to fix.
The problem we encountered
with the road is that it is in very
poor condition, Guzzi said.
In addition, the width of the
road would have to be expanded
to 18 or more feet. While Medford
Township has the right of way to
do this, there are properties and
other obstacles in the way.
I cant imagine widening that
road, Deputy Mayor Chris Buoni
said. At points, that road is with-
in five feet of a house.
The concern for residents of
the existing Wildflower and Glen
developments goes beyond the
road condition. Many residents
use that road to walk along and
for recreation. The feeling is that
traffic flow would greatly in-
crease with motorists using the
road as a short cut to go from
Route 70 to Hartford.
Nearly all residents from the
Wildflower and Glen communi-
ties signed petitions asking Coun-
cil to keep the road closed.
Wildflower, Glen and the
under-construction Heritage de-
velopments are all age-restricted
housing for adults 55 years and
older. This led to the state saying
in a traffic study that the traffic
flow would not increase much
since many of the residents dont
work.
Wildflower resident Jeff Allen
disagreed.
Fifty-five percent of the resi-
dents work full-time, he said. So
you can fully expect a lot of traf-
fic.
Buoni said he also has a major
concern about traffic turning left
from Jennings Road on to Route
70. The state Department of
Transportation rejected a town-
ship proposal to build a light at
the intersection, stating that the
light would be too close to the one
at the intersection of Jones Road
and Route 70.
While the traffic light issue
will be taken back to the state in
2014, the concerns about traffic
flow still loomed large.
It would be the wrong thing to
open up the road, Councilman
Chuck Watson said. Lets use it
as the gem it is.
Councilman Jeffrey Beenstock
suggested looking at another op-
tion to construct a road that will
allow Jennings Road to remain
closed.
If Jennings Road is not a vi-
able option, why not look at a
northerly exit or an easterly
exit, he said.
In other news:
Medford Council agreed to
drop the minimum bid for the
townships available liquor li-
cense to $450,000. This comes
after the township received no
bids on the license when it was
originally put up for bid in the
summer. The original minimum
bid was $600,000.
Council honored volunteers
who help maintain the Freedom
Dog Park. The park received a
$2,000 grant from The Nutro Com-
pany earlier in November.
The next Medford Council
meeting is scheduled for Tuesday,
Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Public
Safety Building.

Its a shared reaction, De-

Krusinski on Wednesday Nov. 13,
the first day students were al-
lowed to sign letters of intent.
Though he had also received of-
fers from Maine University and
Winthrop University, Krusinski
chose Delaware for a variety of
reasons.
I have close friends and
cousins that went to Delaware,
and when they graduated, they
were able to find jobs doing what
they wanted. They had a received
a great education, and finding a
good academic school was impor-
tant for me, Krusinski said.
He plans on studying biology
and would like to go to dental
school after his baseball days are
done. Krusinski and his father
traveled to Delaware last year to
visit the university and walked
away impressed after a meeting
with head baseball coach Jim
Sherman.
Coach Sherman is a great guy
and a great coach. We talked
about the program and I was ex-
cited about them as a team,
Krusinski said.
Playing shortstop, second base
and outfield for the Crusaders,
Krusinski has led Bishop Eustace
in home runs the last two seasons
and in triples as a sophomore. He
was a member of the Ohio Valley
Regional Team and was named
second team all conference as a
junior. Krusinski said Delaware
plans to make him a corner in-
fielder as they love his power lefty
bat from that position.
The Blue Hens program was
especially attractive to Krusinski
after seeing his friend and Bishop
Eustace alum Jimmy Yezzo get
selected by the Washington Na-
tionals in this years Major
League Baseball draft.
Jimmy is a good friend of
mine, so Ive talked with him and
knew that they had a strong pro-
gram. Seeing him be drafted by
the Nationals is what really made
it stick that they have a really tal-
ented group down there, Krusin-
ski said.
With concerns of what college
to attend addressed, Krusinski is
now able to gear up for his final
season of high school baseball.
Im excited to have a great
senior year. Itll be fun to be able
to be a little more loose knowing
that playing at the next level is
taken care of, Krusinski said.
At the same point, there are al-
ways things you can improve on
so thatll be a focus going into the
season. The speed between the
high school game and the college
is a massive difference that I will
have to learn to adjust to.
While his parents may be
heartbroken to hear it, Delaware
also offered Krusinski the perfect
blend of distance from his town.
Its just far away enough to
move out and live on campus but
close enough that I will still be
able to come home and see my
friends and family, Krusinski
said. Its really exciting to think
about.
