Apart from API 579 Section 4 (thickness averaging), the theory behind the different methodology is usually based on an effective area method. Where metal loss is treated as a part through flaw and evaluated using a Folias bulging stress magnification factor Methodologies are validated against a large burst test database

Most procedures require the determination of critical thickness profiles (CTP) CTP based on river bottom of the minimum thickness readings in both circumferential and longitudinal directions Average and minimum thickness can be determined Recommendations in API RP 579 to derive inspection grid spacing

Section 4 basic procedure Compute remaining thickness ratio (Rt) Determines the length of thickness averaging (L) from equation given in standard Determine s and c , the dimensions of metal loss in the longitudinal and circumferential directions

tmm = minimum measured thickness D = Inside diameter of the cylinder or other section (see API 579) Q = Factor from Table 4.4 based on an RSFa and the remaining thickness ratio, Rt

If s < L then metal loss is acceptable If s > L then:
Assume average thickness equal to measured minimum thickness Direct averaging of the thickness readings that reside within length L. Area averaging method of the thickness readings that reside within length L. Refinement Simplicity

If minimum required thickness (tmin) to code calculation is less than or equal to average thickness (tam) minus the FCA then the metal loss is acceptable
