Code No: C2004 JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD M.Tech I- Semester Supplementary Examinations September, 2010 ADVANCED REINFORCED CONCRETE DESING (STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING) Time: 3hours Max. Marks: 60 Answer any five questions All questions carry equal marks --1. a) b) Can moment redistribution be applied to reduce bending moments in columns? Explain. A tee beam ABC is continuous over spans 8m each and it carries uniformly distributed factored load of 75 kN/m. Assuming fck 25 and fy 415. Check whether we can reduce the maximum moment by 30% and redistribute to the spans. Width of flange 1000 mm; bw = 300 mm; thickness of slab 150 mm; D = 820 mm. Derive the expression relating yield line moment and ultimate load intensity Wn for fixed square slab. Design isotropically reinforced square slab of size 5m to carry a service load of 3 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete & Fe 500 grade of steel, sketch reinforcement details. A simply supported one way ribbed slab of 5m span is to be used for 3 kN/m2 live load. Design the slab using M25 concrete and Fe 415 grade of steel, sketch reinforcement details. Design the exterior panel of a flat slab floor system for a ware house 25 m x 25 m divided into panels of 5m x 5m. Superimposed load 6 kN/m2. Column size 400 mm x 400 mm. Height between floors 4m; Use M20 and Fe 415.

The total weight of contents and the hopper bottom of a bunker having 4 walls of size 4m height by 4.7 m length 840 kN. The thickness of wall is 150 mm. The bunker is supported on 4 columns located at the corners. Adopting M20 concrete grade and Fe 415 grade of steel. Design the walls of the bunker assuming them as deep beams. Design a corbel to carry an ultimate load of 600 kN at distance of 250 mm from face of column of size 400 mm x 400 mm. M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel are to be used. Draw the reinforced details. Take bearing stress of concrete as 0.8Fy. Briefly explain classification of shear walls. Derive the formula for moment of resistance of rectangular shear walls. Contd2

What are the major factors which influence the crack widths in flexural members? Estimate the design surface crack width directly under the bar on the tension face at the location of maximum moment in the beam details given below. D = 600 mm; d = 562.5 mm d1 = 37.5 mm; b = 300 mm; M = 8.94; x = 189.28 mm; Icr = 3.21 x 109 mm4; Es = 2 x 105 Mpa; M = 200 kN-m; Ast = 1885 mm2.
