Bourse extended the dull sentiment...

Indices extended lackluster performances: The dull sentiment of the bourse further prevailed today and benchmark indices closed opposite at the close of the day. ASPI ended at 5,809.15 with a dip of 15 points. Price drops in Ceylon Tobacco Company (-1.0%), Good Hope (-19.2%) and Ceylon Guardian Investment Trust (-6.0%) weighted negatively on the index performances. S&P SL20, however settled positively at 3,213.93 with a gain of 14 points.

The counter settled at LKR114.8 with a marginal gain of 0.4%. JKH and NEST too witnessed offboard interest where the former recorded a single off-board transaction of 174k shares at LKR 218.0 and the latter denoted a single crossing of 14k shares at LKR1900.0. Investor interest on SAMP and JKH: On-board investor interest was seen in Sampath Bank led by a single trade of 40k shares at LKR165.0. The counter settled at LKR166 with an intra-day gain of 0.1%. John Keells Holdings too displayed on-board interest led by a single 50k trade at LKR218.0. JKH closed at LKR217.8 with a gain of 1.5%. Moderate retail activity on bourse: Retail activity was moderate and concentrated on Touchwood Investments and Nations Lanka Finance.

Crossings in HNB, COMB, JKH and NEST: Hatton National Bank spearheaded the daily turnover supported mainly by a single off-block of 1.5mn shares which changed hands at LKR146.0. HNB however denoted lackluster activity on-board. Commercial Bank also recorded a single crossing which amounted to 841k shares which was dealt at LKR115.0. COMB also displayed on-board interest backed by a single 64k trade at LKR114.9.

SL could become mini Singapore Despite Sri Lanka having a rich human resource, the country is yet to harness its full potential because of its low presence in providing professional services to other international markets, according to a top Standard Chartered Bank (StanChart) executive, who operates in the Asian region. RAM said its gross non-performing loan ratio increased amid tighter economic conditions but it was helped by low defautls on three-wheeler loans, despite gold backed loan delinquencies starting to come in. Up to October arrivals were up 16.8 percent to 904,015. D S Jayaweera, director general of Sri Lanka tourism development authority said last week arrivals would top a million in November. German Investor Confidence Rises for a Fourth Month German investor confidence rose to the highest level in more than four years, signaling that the economic recovery in Europes largest economy remains on track even after a third-quarter slowdown. The ZEW Center for European Economic Research in Mannheim said its index of investor and analyst expectations, which aims to predict economic developments six months in advance, climbed for a fourth month to 54.6 in November. Thats the strongest reading since October 2009 and up from 52.8 the prior month. [Source: www.bloomberg.com] European Car Sales Rise a Second Straight Month on Spain European new car sales rose for two consecutive months for the first time since 2011 as a cash-for-clunkers program in Spain and a regional economic recovery spurred consumers to purchase vehicles. Registrations in October advanced 4.6 percent from a year earlier to 1.04 million autos, the Brussels-based European Automobile Manufacturers Association, or ACEA, said today in a statement. Sales in September climbed 5.5%. A record six-quarter recession in the 17 countries sharing the euro ended in the three months through June, and consumer confidence in the area rose in October.
