HSC Biology Task 3 Assessment Notification, Term 2 2007

9.4 Search for better health

Task: A secondary sources investigation & examination on the following areas associated with disease:
i. The historical development of Malaria
ii. One named infectious disease in humans (not Malaria).
iii. A disease caused by an imbalance in microflora in humans
iv. One named non-infectious disease in humans
v. Problems associated with antibiotic resistance.

Weighting: 30%
Date Due: Wednesday 30th May 2007.
Period 3 BioB & BioC; Lunch & Period 4 BioA

Syllabus points covered

• Gather and process information to trace the historical development of our understanding of the cause and prevention of
malaria.
• Identify data sources, gather, process and analyse information from secondary sources to describe one named infectious
disease in terms of its: cause, transmission, host response, major symptoms, treatment, prevention and control.
• Process information from secondary sources to discuss problems relating to antibiotic resistance.
• Gather, process and present information from secondary sources to show how a named disease results from an imbalance
of microflora in humans.
• Identify data sources, plan and perform a first-hand investigation or gather information from secondary sources to
analyse and present information about the occurrence, symptoms, cause, treatment/management of a named non-
infectious disease.

Five research questions to investigate

i. Outline, in detail, the historical development of our understanding of the cause and prevention of
Malaria. You must include dates and the specific work of various individuals and organisations.
ii. Describe the cause, transmission, host response, major symptoms, and methods of treatment,
prevention and control, of one named infectious disease in humans (Not Malaria).
iii. Describe in detail one disease caused by an imbalance in microflora in humans.
iv. Describe the occurrence, symptoms, cause, treatment/management of one named non-infectious
disease in humans.
v. Explain the problems associated with antibiotic resistance. Include causes of resistance current
examples and strategies for prevention and control.

Part A- Research Portfolio (5%)
For each of the five research questions you will need to do the following.
1. Locate and photocopy/ print three appropriate sources. At least two must be different types of
sources. (Note- Year 12 Biology textbooks of any sort are not to be used as sources. So too, HSC
online notes cannot be used as an internet source).
2. Highlight appropriate points throughout each text.
3. Using the form attached (also on SACSNET) write a brief overview of each source including a
comment on its validity and reliability.
4. Accurately state the reference of each source using set guidelines. These should be listed on a
references page at the beginning of your research portfolio.
5. Appropriately present your research in a folder as a research portfolio.

Part 2 – Examination (25%)

You will sit a one hour examination that will test components of the five research questions you
have investigated. You will hand in your research portfolio before the examination. A high level of
detailed knowledge will be required.
