LFM Case Study

Company overview
LFM Software, is distributed world wide and is fast becoming an industry standard in laser scanning software. Our strengths lie in our powerful 3D laser scanning hardware and software innovations which are regarded as the best in the market, the continual nature of these innovations and the support that we show to our customers who are loyal and longstanding owing to the service we provide.

Case Study

Situation
In order to provide our customer with the as built information needed for revamp and modernisation of an existing brownfield chemical process plant, it was necessary to provide complete coverage of Laser Scan data of a particular unit within the site. The process of data collection in conjunction with a Dimensional Control Survey was completed within a record of two days, providing the client with complete coverage, surmounting to greater than 100 scans totalling 50,000,000 dimensional co-ordinates within an area of 900 square metres. Site work calculations were completed within a day and a complete database of registered points immediately delivered to the clients. The data was used in conjuction with LFM Server and CAD Software wher the information was analysed and compared to the original design as created in CAD. Changes were later made from the information provided with a tolerance of less than 3mm and new plant Engineered on existing structure. In these situationsm timing is of most importance and the Z+F 5006 scanner was best suited for this environment.

Solution
Aiming for Perfection In early 2010, the LFM team, back at the Manchester headquarters, re-evaluated its approach to Scan/Survey registration with the object of streamlining the registration process by reducing the errors surpassing the previous methodology. This new registration process was named Bundle Adjustment. Each targets co-ordinates identified within each scan was re-evaluated and mean adjusted to provide a tighter registration output. The resuts were astonishing and provided the next step in scan registration development. Site Data Collection Point cloud data collection has evolved in leaps and bounds over the last few years and with the introduction of Z+Fs latest phase based scanner, the Imager 5010, it is possible to obtain a high resolution scan at 50,000,000 points within a time scale of 1.5 minutes, providing the user to obtain the same resolution as previous within half the time. As a direct result of this, efficiency on site has been increased. This unit has also been installed with a class 1 laser unit, being the first ever completely eye safe phase based unit on the market today. In this case study the 5006 was chosen by the client. The data processed using the new bundle with resulting high accuracy and the LFM database delivered for revamp and fabrication control (Fig.1)

Results
LFM Server has been specifically designed to link directly with most CAD packages, and it is capable of handling large data sets. (Fig.2) New plant, in this case, was designed within AutoPlant and overlayed with the LFM Database. Slight adjustments of the new design were necessary and correctly tied into the apropriate position. It was necessary to model certain as-built sections for evaluation (Fig.3), in which LFM Modeller 3.95 was the ideal solution. Once confirmation of the new lines were approved in conjunction with LFM Server 3.95, the drawings were sent to fabrication (Fig.4). Accuracies of scan data is of the utmost importance with all deliverables. With the new Bundle Adjustment, it is nos possible to obtain higher accuracies with hust one mouse click (Fig.5). The complete process from site work, data processing to deliverables gives you complete piece of mind.
