The Scientic Method

Question/Problem Hypothesis Materials Method Observations Conclusion Evaluation Variables Bias Theory Law

Question/Problem

A problem is when something happens, and you don't want it to happen. In Moby's case, his plant won't grow. So, you have to recognize the problem. A problem may even start with question that you will observe.

Inference/Hypothesis

Use your observations, and inference, to help you nd what is causing the problem. For example, Moby's is watering his plant too much.! ! ! !

Materials

The materials is what you'll need for your experiment.

Method/Experiment

The method is the steps of your experiment. It's very important to be detailed and add every step.

Observations

You write what you see, feel and think. For example, if something has changed between the beginning and the end.

Conclusion
Think your conclusion/ outcome. Repeat the experiment several times and see if you come out with the good solution. Remember to include if your hypothesis was proven right or was proven wrong.

Evaluation
Evaluation is what you could have done better. You must also remember to include if you think that your experiment has gone right or wrong.

Variables

The variable is the change between two objects. For example, the four trees are the same, but the one thing that will change is the amount of water they will receive.

Bias

Bias is some thing that is unfair in your experiment. For example, you can setup your experiment differently and that can change your result. So, your not being fair in your experiment.

Theory

A theory is almost just as a statement. It has been repeated and conrmed through testing your expirments.!

Law

Law is statement is based on scienctic observation.

Expirement #1:Animal camouage !

Problem:! how does camouage e"ect vision?! Hypothisis: ! People would choose contrasting colour over the matching colour.! Material: ! -Scissors ! - 1 a4 page of green paper cut into 1 inch squares! -1 a4 page of green paper cut into 1 inch squares ! -1 page of brown paper cut into 1 inch squares.! Method:! 1. Cut one page of brown paper into one inch squares.! 2. Arrange the squares onto a piece of green paper.! 3. Give subjects, 5 seconds to grab as many pieces of paper as they can. Limit subjects to picking up one piece at a time.!

Conclusion:! Our experiment went good. Our hypothesis was correct. People chose more brown than the camouaging colour. As you can see in the graph there 35% chose green, 65% chose brown.

Evaluation: The thing we could of done better is maybe get a bit more people. We could of maybe even done the test more times, maybe doing a blind study.

Experiment#2:Eggsp eriment !
Problem: Our problem is we can't tell the di"erence between a raw egg and a boiled egg. Observations: - We tried putting them in water to see if the raw eggs would oat and the boiled would sink. We did that and they all sank. Then we shook them up-down to see if we could hear the liquid of the egg. But, we couldn't so we shook them sideways, and it worked.! Hypothesis:! A cooked egg will spin way better than an raw egg. ! Materials:! - Two raw eggs ! -one boiled egg! -one hard surface.!

Method:! 1. You must rst spin each egg on your hard surface.! 2. Record your information,! 3. Enjoy!!'! Observations:! We observed that the one egg spin very quickly. The other two spun very very slowly. ! Conclusi I feel on:! really condent that the egg spinning was ! the fastest was the boiled. The two other egged were the two raw eggs. Then we ! cracked them to see if we were right. We were. Evaluation:! We ! may, do the test again, or we may get more raw eggs. Or maybe do the test on a di"erent ! surface.!

Experiment #3:Fractured ! Play Dough! !

Problem:! Can you make tension fractures in play dough? Observation:! We saw that the one incision did have quite a lot of change. When, we out three incisions it did not not do much change. Same, for the ve inscions.

Hypothisis:!
The incisions in the middle won't really change.

Materials:!

-Flour! -Salt ! -measuring cup! -spoon! -cream of tartar ! -food colouring(optional)! -boiling water! -veg. Oil ! -knife! -chopsticks !

Method: 1.Take your play dough and square dowels. Stretch ya play dough and take your dowels and put them and the sides. ! 2.Then, take an knife and make a cut straight down .! 3. Hold on the dowels and then stretch them.! 4. Watch and observe.! 5. Take play do and mush all together again. ! 6.Repeat but this time put three cuts straight down in the venter.! 7.watch and observe .! 8.Mush and repeat but this time add ve cuts in the centre.! 9.Compare results.

Experiment #4: Methane!

Problem: If you put garlic in a cow food, will it stop the cue from producing methane?! Hypothisis:! My hypothesis is that it will help because it will reduce the amount do methane the cows produce.! Materials: -6 cows! -Garlic! -cow food! -6 large air tents!

Method:
1. Get your six cows.! 2. Put in plastic tents. One each.! 3. Then, put garlic in three of the cows food. Don't do anything to other three cows. Leave cow in for three weeks.! 4. Take an air sample every hour days.! 5. Release the cow.! 6. Compare your data to the cows you ate the garlic and the cows you didn't.! 7. Repeat tests and conrm.!

Experiment#5: Washing!
Problem:! ! !Which laundry detergent is the !best?! Hypothesis:I think _______ will be the best. ! Materials:! - 15 small sheets white fabric! -Washing machine! - 5 different detergents! - soda! -BBQ sauce ! -coffee ! Experiment detergent rating system !

Method: 1. Get only 5 white fabric then take your BBQ sauce and get stains on them. Take another ve get a soda stain on them. Get your last ve and get a coffee stain on.! 2. Take ve BBQ stained fabric pieces and and label them 1a, 1b etc. Then, for coffee 2a and the soda 3a.! 3.Wash each piece for 45min with your ve different detergents. ! 4.Now, once done washing lay all of your fabric pieces out.! 5.Have a look at each one.! 6.To make the scale it must be from 1-5. 1is very bad, 2 is bad, 3 is okay, 4 is great and 5 is awesome.! 7.Now, rate it and turn it into points. 1 is one point, 2 is two points etc.! 8. Now, determine the winner.!

Experiment #3:! Continue!

Conclusion:
It was a bit shocking out come. The more inscions we made the less change it made.

Variables:! ! The amount of incisions we put in the middle.
