LectureNotes

Pro/Weld Feature Welds You can create welds in Mechanica analysis models by reusing Pro/Weld feature welds. You can use Pro/Weld groove and fillet welds in solid and midsurface compressed models to establish connectivity. Additionally, the Pro/Weld features must be defined as surface welds; lightweight welds are not supported. Examples are shown here for fillet welds (the top and middle images) and groove welds (the bottom image). In all cases the key to the letter in the images is as follows:

a Model midsurfaces b Projected weld surface c Original weld surface d New weld surface

When Pro/WELD feature weld connections are used in solid model compression, the original quilt surfaces are used for placing shell elements. When you are creating a Mechanica simulation model weld, you can reuse the thickness and material information from the Pro/Weld feature, or you can override them and provide your own information for the thickness and material. Best Practices Mechanica detects which midsurface components should be connected and automatically applies link elements to connect them. Though this has diminished the need for defining welds, it is important to understand how welds work and how each type connects the two components to which they are defined. You should also be aware that each of these weld types will add material to the model, and therefore the models mass in the analysis may appear greater than what is reported by Pro/ENGINEER. Procedure: Using Pro/Weld Feature Welds

Scenario
Create a Mechanica weld from a Pro/Weld feature. ProWeld weld_assembly.asm

Task 1. Open the Mechanica application and create a Mechanica weld from a Pro/Weld feature.
Note the geometry in white. It is a Pro/Weld feature that has already been created for you.

1. Click Applications > Mechanica.

2. Click Weld

from the Mechanica toolbar.

3. From the Type drop-down menu, select Weld Feature. 4. Select the Weld feature from the assembly as shown.

5. The dialog box should now appear as shown. Click OK to complete the Weld definition and close the dialog box.

6. Click anywhere on the background to de-select the feature. Note the addition of the Weld symbol on the model. The Weld symbol may be partially hidden by the model geometry. To prevent the model geometry from hiding symbols, click Simulation Display from the main toolbar and clear the Z-Buffer Icons check box.

7. Return to the Standard Pro/ENGINEER mode by clicking Applications > Standard. 8. Click Save from the main toolbar and click OK to save the model.

9. Click File > Close Window from the main menu. 10. Click File > Erase > Not Displayed > OK to erase the model from memory. This completes the procedure.
