Important Upgrade and Installation Notes

This section outlines key information that you should review prior to installing VRS 4.2.

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

The VRS 4.2 installer checks to determine if Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 already exists on your computer. If not, Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is installed automatically during the VRS installation. If other applications on your computer rely on the Microsoft .NET Framework, you should verify that the installation of version 2.0 does not introduce any compatibility issues. For more information, refer to your Microsoft .NET Framework documentation.

Windows Vista Considerations

VRS 4.2 is certified to run on a Microsoft Windows Vista operating system (Enterprise and Business editions, 32-bit or 64-bit). Important To use VRS with Windows Vista, your scanner must have a Vista-certified driver. Check with the manufacturer to confirm that your scanner will work with Vista. You can use VRS with USB scanners in a Windows Vista environment, but SCSI scanners currently are not supported by Windows Vista 64-bit edition. You can consult the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com for updated information related to operating systems and service packs.

User Account Control You must turn off User Account Control while you are installing or uninstalling VRS 4.2 on a computer where the Windows Vista operating system is running. To turn off User Account Control 1 2 3 4 5 Log in to Windows Vista under the account that will be used when you install or uninstall VRS 4.2. From Control Panel, select User Accounts| User Accounts| Turn User Account Control on or off. Clear the check box labeled Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer, and then click OK. Restart your computer and proceed with the installation or uninstallation process. After you install or uninstall VRS 4.2, turn on User Account Control again, according to your preferences.

Windows Vista Incompatibility with Some Scanners The following scanners are not certified to work with VRS in a Windows Vista environment: (SPR00029343)

Kodak i100 series Kodak i200 series Kodak i600 series Panasonic KV-S1020C, KV-S1025C, and KV-S2048

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

Scanner Communication Issue Some scanner manufacturers have not certified their scanner drivers to work in a Windows Vista environment. As a result, you may notice that a reserved scanner loses its ability to communicate with the scanning application if the application is closed and reopened. In this situation, you might receive an error message indicating that the scanner could not be detected, even though it worked successfully in a previous scanning session. (SPR00029426, SPR00034748) Workaround: Once you power cycle the scanner and restart the computer, communications between the scanner and the scanning application are restored.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

VRS 4.2 is certified to run on a computer with the Windows 2000 Professional, SP4 operating system. However, the VRS 4.2 Desktop Productivity features are not supported with Windows 2000. You must use Windows XP or Windows Vista to access these capabilities.

VRS Upgrade Process

If you are upgrading to VRS 4.2 from an earlier VRS version, keep the following guidelines in mind:

You cannot install VRS 4.2 successfully over a version of VRS that is earlier than VRS 3.5. If your VRS installation version is earlier than VRS 3.5, you must upgrade to VRS 3.5 before proceeding with the VRS 4.2 installation. You can download the VRS 3.5 upgrade from the Support pages on the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com. You can install VRS 4.2 over an existing version of VRS 3.5 or VRS 4.x. It is not necessary to remove VRS 3.5 or VRS 4.x before upgrading to VRS 4.2. When installing VRS 4.2 over an existing instance of VRS 3.5, the installer will display a message to indicate that it has detected the earlier version. In this case, click Continue and then proceed with the installation procedure according to the instructions in the VRS Installation Guide. When installing VRS 4.2 over an existing instance of VRS 4.x, the installer will display a message to indicate that it has detected the earlier version. In this case, click Yes and then proceed with the installation procedure according to the instructions in the VRS Installation Guide.

When installing VRS 4.2 over an earlier version, you are prompted to confirm that you wish to continue with the upgrade process. After responding to the prompt, you may notice a slight delay before the upgrade is started. The length of the delay may vary, according to the speed of your computer.

Important If you download and install a VRS 4.2 product upgrade from the Kofax Web site without purchasing the appropriate license, a demo stamp is applied to any images that you scan. Once you purchase and activate the appropriate license, the demo stamp is no longer applied.

Upgrading from VRS 3.5 to VRS 4.2 with a Software License If your VRS 3.5 installation was licensed with a hardware key or a Kofax Adrenaline 650i hardware accelerator, and you are installing VRS 4.2 Basic or Professional with a software license, be sure to review the information in this section before you start the software installation procedure in the VRS Installation Guide.

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

If you intend to install a VRS 4.2 Basic license, do the following during the installation process:

Keep the VRS 3.5 hardware key or the Adrenaline 650i hardware accelerator in place during the VRS 4.2 installation process. When the Product Information screen is displayed, select the I am upgrading from VRS 3.5 to VRS Basic check box. The other items on the screen will be grayed; click Next to proceed. When the Activate VRS dialog box is displayed later in the installation procedure, be sure that the hardware key or hardware accelerator is still in place. The Upgrade from VRS 3.5 to a Basic license item will be selected, and the other items on the dialog box will be grayed. From the Activate VRS dialog box, click Activate. When the Register VRS dialog box is displayed, make sure the appropriate information is filled out, and then click Register Now. If applicable, remove the VRS 3.5 hardware key after you finish the VRS 4.2 installation procedure. Keep the hardware key in a secure location for future reference.

If you intend to install a VRS Professional license, do the following during the installation process:

Keep the VRS 3.5 hardware key or the Adrenaline 650i hardware accelerator in place during the VRS 4.2 installation process. When the Product Information screen is displayed, enter the applicable information provided at the time of your VRS 4.2 Professional license purchase. The product information for this screen is provided on a pre-printed label in your product package. (If you purchase the product online, the product information is issued from the Kofax Web site and also sent via email at the time of purchase.) When the Activate VRS dialog box is displayed later in the installation procedure, be sure that the hardware key or hardware accelerator is still in place. The Enter product information for a license item will be selected, and the information entered earlier on the Product Information screen is displayed in the appropriate fields. When you click Get License Code, the license code will be retrieved from the license server and then the Activate VRS dialog box will be closed. If applicable, remove the VRS 3.5 hardware key after you finish the VRS 4.2 installation procedure. Keep the hardware key in a secure location for future reference.

Upgrading from VRS 3.5 to VRS 4.2 with a Hardware Key If your VRS 3.5 installation was licensed with a hardware key and you are installing VRS 4.2 Professional with a hardware key, be sure to review the instructions in this section before you start the software installation procedure in the VRS Installation Guide.

Keep the VRS 3.5 hardware key in place during the VRS 4.2 installation process. When the Product Information screen is displayed, click Next without making any entries. When the message is displayed to indicate that information is missing, click Continue to proceed without returning to the Product Information screen. Continue with the installation according to the instructions in the VRS Installation Guide. After you restart the computer, replace the VRS 3.5 hardware key with the VRS 4.2 hardware key. Keep the VRS 3.5 hardware key in a secure location for future reference.

Upgrading from VRS 4.x with a Hardware Key If your VRS 4.0/4.1 installation was licensed with a hardware key, be sure to review the instructions in this section before you start the VRS 4.2 installation procedure in the VRS Installation Guide.

Keep the VRS 4.x hardware key in place during the VRS 4.2 installation process. Follow the software installation procedure in the VRS Installation Guide. You can bypass the instructions related to the following screens, because they are not applicable when the hardware key is in effect: User Identification, Product Information, Destination Folder, and Activate VRS.

Installing VRS 4.2 Professional with a Hardware Key

If your VRS 4.2 Professional product is licensed with a hardware key, and you are not upgrading from VRS 3.5 or VRS 4.0/4.1, review the instructions in this section before you start the installation procedure in the VRS Installation Guide.

Before starting the software installation, attach the VRS 4.2 hardware key to any available USB port on your computer. If the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box displays when the computer detects the hardware key, click Cancel to close the wizard. The drivers required for the hardware key will be added later in the installation process and, as a result, the dialog box will not display again. Proceed with the VRS software installation according to the instructions in the VRS Installation Guide. Because you have a hardware key, the installation procedure will be slightly different than the one described in the guide, as noted here:

When the Product Information screen appears, click Next to bypass it. Then, click Continue in response to the message about missing product information. Continue with the VRS installation procedure and bypass the section in the guide that explains how to complete the Activate VRS dialog box, which is not applicable when VRS 4.2 is licensed with a hardware key.

VRS Component Installers

If you download a VRS Component Installer from the Kofax Support Web pages, be sure to select the version that matches your VRS installation version. For example, VRS 4.2 requires a VRS 4.2 Component Installer, and VRS 4.1 requires a VRS 4.1 Component Installer.

VRS and Kofax Capture

VRS 4.2 is installed silently as part of all Kofax Capture 8.0 installations. Therefore, it is not necessary to install VRS separately if you have a Kofax Capture 8.0 installation already in place. When installed silently with Kofax Capture, VRS does not appear as a separate entry on the Currently installed programs list in the Add or Remove Programs utility (or the Programs and Features utility on a Windows Vista computer). In a Kofax Capture installation, the availability of VRS functionality is dependent upon the terms of the Kofax Capture license. For details about licensing, refer to your Kofax Capture documentation.

Other Considerations

If necessary, you can install VRS 4.2 successfully over an existing Kofax Capture 8.0 installation, or an Ascent Capture 7.0/7.5 installation. Note The Kofax Capture product was recently renamed; it was known as Ascent Capture in previous releases.

If you install VRS 4.2, and then you install Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.0/7.5, the proper scan sources will not be available in Kofax Capture or Ascent Capture. However, if you reinstall VRS 4.2 after installing Kofax Capture or Ascent Capture, the issue with the scan sources will be resolved.

VRS 3.5 and Kofax Capture or Ascent Capture If you are using VRS 3.5 with your Ascent Capture 5x/6x installation, and then you upgrade to Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.5, you may need to complete the procedure in this section to ensure proper VRS licensing. After upgrading to Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.5, your VRS 3.5 installation will be upgraded automatically to VRS 4.2 or 4.1, respectively. However, unless the VRS 4.2 or 4.1 license is properly activated, VRS will run in demo mode and a Kofax logo will be stamped on all scanned images. This occurs in the following situations:

Your Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.5 licensing does not include a VRS Professional license. Your VRS 4.2 or 4.1 Basic license has not been activated. Your VRS 4.2 or 4.1 Professional upgrade license has not been activated.

You should follow the procedure in this section if all of the following apply to your installation:

You currently have VRS 3.5 installed on your computer, and it is licensed with either a hardware key or a Kofax Adrenaline 650i hardware accelerator. You currently have Ascent Capture 5x/6x installed on your computer, and you intend to upgrade to Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.5. Your Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.5 licensing does not include a VRS Professional license. You have not activated a VRS 4.2 or 4.1 Basic license or a VRS 4.2 or 4.1 Professional upgrade license.

To activate the proper VRS license 1 2 3 Keep your VRS 3.5 installation and hardware key or Adrenaline 650i hardware accelerator in place. Install Kofax Capture 8.0 or Ascent Capture 7.5 according to the instructions in the documentation for the respective product. Once the Kofax Capture or Ascent Capture installation is done, navigate to the Activate.exe file in your VRS installation, which is typically located here: Program Files\Kofax\Imgctls\Bin\Activate.exe 4 5 Double-click Activate.exe. The Activate VRS dialog box is displayed (Figure 1). Do one of the following:

Select Upgrade from VRS 3.5 to a Basic license if you have a VRS 4.1 Basic license. When the other items on the dialog box become grayed, click Activate.

Kofax Image Products

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

Select Upgrade from VRS 3.5 to a Basic license if you have a VRS 4.2 Basic license. When the other items on the dialog box become grayed, click Activate. Select Enter product identification for a license if you have a VRS 4.2 or 4.1 Professional upgrade license, and then continue to the next step.

Figure 1. Activate VRS Dialog Box

If you selected Enter product identification for a license in the previous step, enter the part number, serial number, and product code issued with your VRS 4.2 or 4.1 Professional upgrade license and then click Get License Code. The Activate VRS dialog box is closed, and a message is displayed to confirm successful activation. Click OK to clear the confirmation message. When the Register VRS dialog box is displayed, make sure the appropriate information is filled out, and then click Register Now. Remove the VRS 3.5 hardware key (if applicable) and keep it in a secure location for future reference.

Known Problems
This section contains information about potential problems that you could encounter while using VRS 4.2.

Users Guide Translations

The VRS Users Guide is currently available in English on the installation CD. Translated versions of the guide will be posted on the Kofax Web site at www.kofax.com as they become available for the following languages:

French German Italian Japanese Korean Simplified Chinese Spanish Traditional Chinese

Translations for additional languages will follow as they become available. To check for the translated guides, go to the Support pages on the Web site and select the Online Documentation link. The VRS Installation Guide is currently available from the installation CD in English, as well as the languages on the preceding list.

Installing VRS 4.x on a Non-English Windows XP Operating System

When you use a restricted user account to access scanning applications on a non-English Windows XP operating system, errors are sometimes generated when you attempt to select a VRS scan source. (SPR00025141, SPR00029382) Workaround: You can assign power user or higher rights to the person who is using VRS with the scanning application. Then assign the local user group full access to the following folders:

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kofax c:\Program Files\Kofax\Imgctls\bin\Profiles

When assigning permissions to the local user group, be sure to select the option to inherit permissions from the parent. It is not helpful to give access to domain users.

Desktop Productivity: VRS Server Timeout

A VRS Server Timeout message occasionally appears while the Desktop Productivity features are in use. As a result, processing is suspended. In this situation, you may be able to resume processing by clicking Ignore or Retry in response to the message. If processing does not resume after you click Ignore or Retry, we recommend that you follow the instructions in the following workaround to increase the timeout interval, which by default is 60 seconds. (SPR00034261, SPR00034272)

Kofax Image Products

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

Workaround: Increase the timeout interval by editing the configuration file named VRS Professional Scan.xml, which is available from the following folders:

Windows XP: Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Kofax\VRS Professional Scan Windows Vista: Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Kofax\VRS Professional Scan

In the configuration file, locate the section that contains the timeout value and replace 60 with a higher value:
<VRS.ScanApp.Library> <Parameter Name=VrsServerTimeout Value=60/> <VRS.ScanApp.Library>

By increasing the value, you allow more time for VRS processing to occur before the VRS Server Timeout message appears.

Desktop Productivity: Flatbed Cropping with A5 Paper

If you attempt to scan an A5-sized document in a flatbed scanner while using the VRS Desktop Productivity features, the document is not cropped successfully if you align the document with the guide markers in the top left corner. (SPR00034485) Workaround: Place the A5 document in the center of the flatbed, away from the top edge, on the opposite side of the flatbed marker. When the document is positioned this way, cropping works successfully.

Desktop Productivity: No InoTec Scanner Support

The Desktop Productivity features are not supported with the InoTech scanners. If you attempt to use an InoTec scanner with the Desktop Productivity features, an error occurs (SPR00034805):
Kofax accelerator driver error

Workaround: Although the VRS Desktop Productivity features are not supported with this scanner, you can use the other VRS features successfully.

Long Document Scanning with a Bwe Bell + Howell Spectrum Series Scanner
When using VRS 4.x with a TWAIN scanning application set for long documents in color mode, the following error occurs if you scan a 300 DPI document with a Bwe Bell + Howell 8000 scanner. (SPR00015096)
KFX Error Code:KER_PARAMVALUE

Workaround: The error may be resolved if you scan at a lower resolution or select a different mode, such as black and white or grayscale.

Automatic Color Detection and Adobe Acrobat

If you are using Adobe Acrobat to scan documents, an error will occur if you enable Automatic Color Detection from the Color panel in the VRS Adjustment Controls. The error occurs because some TWAIN applications, such as Adobe Acrobat, do not support the ability (required for Automatic Color Detection) to process batches that consist of both color images and bitonal images. (SPR00006219)

Kofax Image Products

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

Workaround: To use Automatic Color Detection successfully, you can scan your images using a Kofax ImageControls-based application, such as Kofax Capture (or Ascent Capture), VCDemo, Scan Demo, etc. If the scanning application is based on ImageControls 3.75B or later, the ability to generate PDF files will be supported. If not, you have the option of importing the scanned images into Adobe Acrobat.

Auto Orientation and High Resolution Grayscale Scanning

When using the VRS auto orientation feature for high resolution (such as 400 DPI) grayscale scanning, you may notice that the auto orientation fails with some scanners, depending on their ability to produce quality grayscale output. (SPR00015655) Workaround: You can avoid the problem by scanning at a lower resolution.

Kodak i40 Component Installer on Japanese Operating Systems

When you select the Kodak i40 scanner during the VRS 4.x installation on a computer running under Japanese Windows XP SP1, an error occurs when you restart the computer after the installation is finished. As a result, the installation of the Kodak i40 scanner driver is unsuccessful. (SPR00015502) Workaround: After installing VRS and restarting the computer, you can manually install the Kodak i40 driver by navigating to the Kodak folder on the VRS installation CD and selecting the CI-Kodak-i40.exe file.

Endorser and Bwe Bell + Howell Spectrum Scanners

If you are using the endorsing feature with Bwe Bell + Howell Spectrum scanners, a problem will occur if you move the endorser and open the scanner cover while scanning is in progress. As a result, the annotation and endorsing will not be synchronized. (SPR00008181, SP00008182, SPR00030367) Workaround: Do not move the endorser or open the scanner cover while scanning is in progress.

Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller Installation

If you use the VRS 4.x installer to install an Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller, it will be listed as Kofax VirtualReScan <4.x>in the Currently installed programs list in the Add or Remove Programs utility (or the Programs and Features utility on a Windows Vista computer). This occurs if you select Install Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller only from the VRS installation wizard. (SPR00015587) Workaround: If you need to remove your Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller installation, select Kofax VirtualReScan 4.x from the Currently installed programs list in the Add or Remove Programs utility.

Scanner Selection for Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller Installation

If you use the VRS 4.x installer and select the Install Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller only option, and then select a Bwe Bell + Howell Spectrum series scanner during the installation process, the scanner will not work properly. (SPR00015620)

10

Kofax Image Products

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

Workaround: The scanner will work properly if you select the Install VRS and an Adrenaline SCSI Scanner Controller option during the installation process.

QC Modes Selection for ISIS Applications

When using an ISIS application, you can set the VRS stop interval by selecting QC Modes from the VRS taskbar menu. In order for the settings to go into effect, the ISIS scanner interface dialog box must be open when you select the QC mode. From the ISIS scanner interface dialog box, you also need to update your scanner presets to save the QC Mode settings.

VRS ISIS Interface and Endorsing

If you are using VRS with PixTools or QuickScan Pro, you have the option of specifying a counter after the endorser text in the Endorser Settings dialog box. In order for the counter to increment properly, you must enter the pound sign (#) at the end of the counter.

Kofax SCSI Utilities and VRS Sometimes Install in Separate Folders

If you install VRS 4.x with a production scanner that results in the installation of the Kofax SCSI utilities, they are always installed to the Bin subfolder under the default VRS installation folder, which is c:\Program Files\Kofax\Imgctls. However, if you specify a VRS installation folder that differs from the default location, the installation path for the Kofax SCSI utilities is not updated accordingly. (SPR00015433) Workaround: You can launch the Kofax SCSI utilities (Firmware Loader utility and INI Loader utility) from the default installation folder.

Source Creation for Kodak i50 / i60 Scanners

If you specify a Kodak i50 scanner or a Kodak i60 scanner during the VRS installation process, scan sources are created automatically for both scanner models. Even though extra sources are available, the correct default source will be selected from your scanning application. (SPR00023250)

Removal of Adrenaline 650 / 650i Scanner Controller Driver

The Adrenaline 650/650i scanner controller Initio driver (InAspi32.sys) sometimes is not removed when you uninstall VRS 4.x. This occurs if the driver is in use. (SPR00023649) Workaround: To ensure that the Adrenaline 650/650i scanner controller driver (InAspi32.sys) is removed when you uninstall VRS 4.x, do the following:

Turn off the scanner power. Disconnect the scanner from the computer. Restart the computer. Uninstall VRS 4.x.

ISIS Auto Size and Skew Detection - Duplex Scan Fails

When using a Fujitsu fi-4530c or a Kodak iSeries scan source with VRS, an error will occur while scanning duplex images if you select Tools | Scanner Driver Settings from the VirtualReScan

Kofax Image Products

11

VirtualReScan (VRS) 4.2 Release Notes

Interactive Viewer to access and enable Automatic Size and Skew Detection. (SPR00015383, SPR00033494) Workaround: When scanning duplex images with the Fujitsu fi-4530c or the Kodak iSeries scanner, do not select Automatic Size and Skew Detection from the Advanced Settings dialog box. (By default, Automatic Size and Skew Detection is not selected, and therefore no problem will occur unless you change the setting.)

VCDemo Icon in Kofax VRS Program Folder

If you upgrade to VRS 4.2 from a previous version of VRS, the VCDemo icon in the Kofax VRS program folder is not updated with the newer version of the icon. This does not affect the operation of VCDemo. (SPR00033093)

Error After Uninstalling VRS

After uninstalling VRS or a VRS component, you may notice an error message that mentions a missing DLL. The message appears when you restart the computer after uninstalling your VRS software. This problem has been reported by VRS users with Canon scanners, but it could potentially occur with other scanners. (SPR00034351) Workaround: You can resolve the issue by installing the scanner driver on the CD provided by the scanner manufacturer. Once the scanner driver is installed, the error message does not appear.

Compression Support for TWAIN Applications

With VRS 4.2, support for standard image compression formats has been extended to TWAIN scanning applications. However, some TWAIN applications (such as Adobe Acrobat and ScanSoft PaperPort) do not support compression of scanned images. As a result, when you select compression, either the compression type is unavailable or an error occurs when you attempt to scan. (SPR00035018) Workaround: Before turning on compression with a TWAIN scanning application, check the documentation to determine which, if any, compression formats are supported.
