Einstein and Eddington (2008)

Einstein and Eddington is a 2008 film, directed by Philip Martin, starring some British great actors like David Tennant and Andy Serkis. Setting in World War I, the film emphasizes scientists important role in the war itself. Albert Einstein (Andy Serkis) is being called back to Germany to continue his work about gravity, so in the end Germany can humiliate England by proofing that Isaac Newtons law of gravitypride of Britishs scienceis wrong. Meanwhile, an English scientist named Arthur Eddington (David Tennant) is asked to search some flaws in Einsteins works and defend Newtons theory. But eventually, they end up mailing each other and renown the law of gravity together, hoping that this teamwork will help to stop the war. To be honest, I was not really interested with this film at first, especially when I found the name of one of the biggest scientist the world have ever known. I thought this film would be a one-hour long documentary, with a lot of historical sights and difficult scientific terms. But when I watched it, I did not feel sleepy at all. Both history and science mixed very well in a neat presentation. The actors also play their role greatly; even Andy Serkis manages to copy the famous Albert Einsteins photograph where he stuck his tongue out to the camera. But I think, the most interesting thing about this movie is the fact that this is not a pure documentary like we usually watch in National Geographic channel. There are lots of drama from Einstein and Eddingtons personal life that has been added to this movie. Who ever thought that behind his lunatic hair, Einstein had a complicated family life? On the other hand, Eddingtons personal life was also dilemmatic, especially with his religious belief which against a lot of things that happened in his life. We cannot aside the fact that some people will still consider Einstein and Eddington as a boring film because of its science contents. But still, this movie is a worth to watch. Besides the entertainment, we can also get brand new knowledge. This movie particularly introduces us to Arthur Eddington whose name we rarely heard of, but has a key role behind the success of Einstein. Without him, the world will never recognize Albert Einstein as the inventor of relativity theory. But in the end, they both teach us that science is not about war with great technologiesits about how make the world better and bring peace to life.
