Adjectives Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Anna Achterhoff Lesson #: 2 Subject/Grade: Second/Language Arts/Fine Arts Date and Time of Lesson: October 24th, 2013 Learning Objective: Students will be able to correctly describe nouns using adjectives. Alignment with Standards: CCSS.ELA-Conventions of Standard English. L.2.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. VA2-1.3 Use and combine a variety of materials, techniques, and processes to create works of visual art.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students need to already be familiar with nouns in order to understand and use adjectives to describe nouns. It is developmentally appropriate for students to learn what an adjective is because they must understand parts of speech before they are able to correctly label and structure complex sentences in both spoken and written language. This specific lesson does not apply to any EEDA standards but could be aligned if students were instructed to use adjectives to describe persons in different career fields. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment: Ask each student what an adjective is. Their answers will be recorded in order for me to identify the students that do not know prior to the lesson what an adjective is. During Assessment: Students will participate as a whole group to describe three items I have in a bag using adjectives. We will then go around the circle and have each student describe themselves using one adjective. Post Assessment: After making Monster Heads out of construction paper students will list four adjectives to correctly describe their monster creation. Use of Formative Assessment Recording and analyzing this data will indicate whether or not students understand that adjectives are used to describe nouns. Student comprehension will be formally assessed by observing each students monster and the four adjectives they chose to describe it.

Objective 1 Students will be able to correctly describe a noun using four adjectives.

Accommodations: Any student having trouble comprehending the concept of adjectives and what they do will receive one-on-one assistance during independent lesson time. If a student does not complete the monster

activity they may do so once they have completed their assigned lesson during independent work time. Early finishers can write a short story about their monster using adjectives. If the two students with special needs are not in their physical training session during the lesson time I will explain the lesson and activity to their shadow so the students will have individual guidance. Materials: Smart Board: School House Rock- Unpack Your Adjectives (Grammar Rock) Video http://www.schooltube.com/video/964198d6a8d99911f4dc/ Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What is an Adjective? By Brian P. Cleary illustrated by Jenya Prosmitsky Brown paper bag Three items for class to describe: spoon, cotton ball, and a pipe cleaner The white board Construction paper: green, black, red, orange, yellow, white, blue Notecards (1 per student) Glue Scissors Markers- assorted colors Procedures: 1. Once the class is seated in a circle on the rug remind the group of expectations for behavior. Tell students there are three items in the brown paper bag that will be passed around the circle one at a time. After each item is passed around ask what is it? and write the class response on the board. Then ask to describe the item and list their responses next to the items name. Once all three items are identified and described explain to the class the items are nouns and the words describing each noun are adjectives. 2. We will then go around the circle and have each student say an adjective that describes them, I am tall. Again state to the class that the job of adjectives is to describe nouns. 3. I have a short School House Rock video we are going to watch to help us understand what adjectives are. Play Unpack Your Adjectives on the Smart Board. 4. Since it is getting close to Halloween I want to read you a book full of adjectives that describe a monster! read Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What is an adjective?. 5. After the book ask students to recall adjectives in the book that were used to describe the monster. 6. Now that we know adjectives are words that describe nouns and have read a book full of words (adjectives) that describe a little monster we are going to make our own monster. There is construction paper, markers, and glue sticks available to use (model the activity). Once we have completed our monsters made out of construction paper we are going to write on a notecard My monster is and list four adjectives that correctly describe the monster you created. The notecard will be glued on the bottom on a piece of construction paper and the monster head will be glued above. Once completed we will put our names on the back and turn our monsters in. 7. After explaining the monster head activity to the class ask if there are any questions, remind students to throw away extra paper scraps and to make sure their work area is cleaned up once finished.

Higher Order Thinking Questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. What is an adjective? What is one adjective you can use to describe yourself? Why do we need adjectives? How do we know where an adjective is in a sentence?

Activity Analysis: 1. Watch the video Unpack Your Adjectives by School House Rock. This video has a jingle to grab students attention while explaining what an adjective is, how, and why we use them. The class enjoys music therefore I thought they would be interested in watching a video explanation of adjectives and their purpose. By showing the video technology is integrated into the lesson. 2. Read Hairy, Scary, and Ordinary: What is an adjective? By Brian Cleary. This book gives many examples of descriptive adjectives. It also directly relates to the activity the students will do after the book when they make a monster and use four adjectives to describe it. 3. Construct a monster head out of construction paper. This will show students that adjectives can be used to describe all different kinds of nouns. References: Kaitlin (2013 Aug 13) Monster Adjectives.
