Prepare to Install Your FVS318v3 VPN Firewall For Cable Modem Service: WhenyouperformtheVPN firewall setupstepsbesureto usethecomputer youusedwhenyoufirst set upyour cableInternet connection. For DSL Service: Youmay needinformationsuchastheDSL loginname/e-mail addressandpasswordinorder to completetheVPN firewall setup. First, Connect the FVS318v3 1. CONNECT THE CABLES BETWEEN THE FVS318V3, COMPUTER, AND MODEM a. Turnoff your computer. b. Unplugandturnoff thebroadbandmodem. c. LocatetheEthernet cable(Cable1inthediagram) that connectsyour modem andcomputer. A d. Disconnect thecableat the computer end only, point A inthediagram. e. Securely insert theEthernet cablefromyour modem(Cable1inthediagram) into theINTERNET port of theFVS318v3asshowninpoint B of thediagram. f. Securely insert thebluecablethat camewithyour FVS318v3(theBlue NETGEAR Cableinthediagrambelow) into aLOCAL port onthefirewall such asLOCAL port 8(point C inthediagram), andtheother endinto theEthernet port of your computer (point D inthediagram). Your network cablesareconnectedandyouareready to restart your network. 2. RESTART YOUR NETWORK IN THE CORRECT SEQUENCE Warning: Failureto restart your network inthecorrect sequencecouldprevent you fromconnectingto theInternet. a. First, pluginthepower cordto your broadbandmodem, turnit on, andwait two minutes. b. Now, pluginthepower cordto your FVS318v3, turnit on, andwait oneminute. c. Last, turnonyour computer. Note: For DSL customers, if ISP-providedsoftwarelogsyouinto theInternet, do not runthat software. Youmay needto go to theInternet Explorer Tools B C D menu, Internet Options, Connectionstabpagewhereyoucanselect Never dial a connection. d. Check theFVS318v3statuslightsto verify thefollowing: PWR: ThePWR light shouldturnsolidgreen. If it doesnot turnsolidgreen, check theadapter or thepower switch. TEST: TheTEST light goesonwhentherouter isfirst turnedonandthen goesoff. If after two minutesit isstill on, seetheTroubleshootingTipsin thisguide. INTERNET: TheINTERNET port LINK light shouldbelit. If not, makesure theEthernet cableissecurely attachedto theFVS318v3Internet port andthe modem. Also, makesurethemodemispoweredon. LOCAL: A LOCAL LINK/ACT light shouldbelit. The100LED indicates your computer iscommunicatingat 100Mbps; off indicates10Mbps. If a LOCAL LINK/ACT light isnot lit, check that theEthernet cablefromthe computer to thefirewall issecurely attachedat bothends, andthat the computer isturnedon. Now, Configure the FVS318v3 for Internet Access UsetheSmart Wizardconfigurationassistant to configuretheFVS318v3. 1. FromtheEthernet connectedcomputer youjust set up, openabrowser suchas Internet Explorer or NetscapeNavigator. WiththeFVS318v3initsfactory default state, your browser will display theNETGEAR Smart Wizardwelcomepage. Follow theSmart Wizardpromptsto connect to theInternet. 3. Click Done ontheSuccessscreenandbesureto click OK at theprompt to closethe screenandfinish. Note: Theconfigurationassistant only appearswhentheFVS318v3isinitsfactory default state. After youconfiguretheFVS318v3, it will not appear again. Youcan alwaysconnect to therouter configurationmenuto changeitssettings. To do so, open abrowser andgo to http://www.routerlogin.net. Then, whenprompted, enter admin astheuser nameandpassword for thepasswordbothinlower caseletters. Troubleshooting Tips Herearesometipsfor correctingcommonproblemsyoumay encounter. Be sure to restart your network in this sequence: 1. Turnoff andunplugthemodem, turnoff theFVS318v3, andshut downthecomputer. 2. Pluginandturnonthemodem, wait two minutes. 3. TurnontheFVS318v3andwait oneminute. 4. Turnonthecomputer. Make sure the Ethernet cables are securely plugged in. TheINTERNET LINK light ontheFVS318v3will belit if theEthernet cableto the FVS318v3fromthemodemispluggedinsecurely andthemodemandFVS318v3are turnedon. For eachpoweredoncomputer connectedto theFVS318v3withasecurely plugged inEthernet cable, thecorrespondingFVS318v3LOCAL port LINK light will belit. Thefront andback of theFVS318v3identifiesthenumber of eachLOCAL port. Make sure the network settings of the computer are correct. Ethernet cableandwirelessly connectedcomputersshouldbeconfiguredto obtainIP and DNS addressesautomatically viaDHCP whenever possible. For helpwiththis, pleaseseetheanimatedtutorialsor theReference Manual Appendix C onthe Resource CD. SomecablemodemISPsrequireyouto usetheMAC addressof thecomputer regis- teredontheaccount. If so, intheRouter MAC Addresssectionof theBasic Settings menu, select, UsethisComputersMAC Address. Thefirewall will thencapture andusetheMAC addressof thecomputer that youarenow using. Youmust beusing thecomputer that isregisteredwiththeISP. Click Apply to saveyour settings. Restart thenetwork inthecorrect sequence. Use the FVS318v3 status lights to verify correct operation. If theFVS318v3Power light doesnot turnsolidgreenwithintwo minutesof turning thefirewall on, or if theTest light doesnot go off, reset thefirewall asdescribedinthe Reference Manual ontheResource CD.
