ASSIGNMENTS Assignment I 1. (a) A machine component 1.

.5 m long and weight 1000 N is supported by two ropes AB and CD as shown in the Figure given below. Calculate the tensions T1 and T2 in the ropes AB and CD

(b) The forces 20 N, 30 N, 40 N, 50 N and 60 N are acting at one of the angular points of a regular hexagon, towards the other five angular points, taken in order. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force. 2. (a) A block weighing 1500 N, overlying a 10 wedge on a horizontal floor and leaning against a vertical wall, is to be raised by applying a horizontal force to the wedge . Assuming the coefficient of friction between all the surface in contact to be 0.3 , determine the minimum horizontal force required to raise the block. (b) The screw of a jack is square threaded with two threads in a centimeter. The outer diameter of the screw is 5 cm. If the coefficient of friction is 0.1, calculate the force required to be applied at the end of the lever, which is 70 cm long (a) to lift a load of 4 kN, and (ii) to lower it. 3. (a) Derive an expression for the velocity ratio of a belt drive considering thickness of the belt. (b) The screw of a jack is square threaded with two threads in a centimeter . The outer diameter of the screw is 5 cm. If the coefficient of friction is 0.1, calculate the force required to be applied at the end of the lever, which is 70 cm long (a) to lift a load of 4 kN, and (ii) to lower it.

4. a) Derive an expression for the moment of inertia of a triangular section about an axis passing through the CG of the section and parallel to the base. b) A hemisphere of diameter 60mm is placed on the top of a cylinder, whose diameter is also 60 mm. The height of the cylinder is 75mm. Find the common CG of the composite body.

ASSIGNMENT II 1. (a) The ultimate stress, for a hollow steel column which carries an axial load of 1.9MN is 480N/mm2. If the external diameter of the column is 200mm, determine the internal diameter. Take the factor of safety as 4. (b) A steel rod of 3cm diameter is enclosed centrally in a hollow copper tube of external diameter 5cm and internal diameter of 4cm. the composite bar is then subjected to an axial pull of 45000N. If the length of each bar is equal to 15cm, determine: i) The stresses in the rod and tube and ii) Load carried by each bar. Take E for steel as 2.1 105 N/mm2 and for copper as 1.1 105 N/mm2. 2. a) What do you mean by point of contra flexure? Is the point of contra flexure and point of inflexion different? b) What are the different types of beams? Differentiate between a cantilever and a simply supported beam with examples. c) A simply supported beam AB, hinged at A and B. It is subjected to a clockwise couple of 24kN-m at a distance of 2m from the left end A. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram. 3. (a) What do you mean by direct stress and bending stress? (b) Three beams have the same length, same allowable bending stress and same bending moment. The cross-section of the beams are a square, rectangle with depth twice the width and a circle. Find the ratios of weights of the circular and the rectangular beams with respect to square beams. 4. a) Prove that the maximum shear stress in a circular section of a beam is 4/3 times that average shear stress. b) The shear force acting on a section of a beam is 50kN. The section of the beam is of T-shaped of dimensions 100mm 100mm 20mm. The moment of inertia about the horizontal neutral axis is 314.221 104 mm4. Calculate the shear stress at the neutral axis and at the junction of the web and the flange.
