Directors Message
The General Management Program(GMP) for Defence Officers has, since its inception in 2005, become an integral part of the training calendar at the IIM, Lucknow. This is just one of the many innovative programs that we conduct at IIML, and exemplifies the Institution's vision to build a committed cadre of successful and efficient managers to take on the mantle of leadership in the Corporate sector in India as well as abroad. 58 Officers from the Indian Armed Forces are presently undergoing the course, comprising Defence GMP-12. Accentuating the uniqueness of this program, the graduating class of 2013 incorporates a rich and diverse mix of professionals from varied backgrounds. In addition to the vital expertise that each participant brings from the Armed Forces, this 24-week program hones their skill-sets from the corporate management perspective. The curriculum thus suitably exposes them to the core areas in management, including Corporate Finance, Human Resources, Economics, Communications, Business Analytics, Operations, Projects and Marketing. As a result, the outgoing class of 2013 will constitute a group of experienced and well-endowed managers who, I am sure, will be suitably equipped to add significant value to the organisations that they will join in the near future. I, on behalf of my team, therefore urge you as potential recruiters to interact with us at IIM Lucknow in order to facilitate in harnessing their skills and for their smooth transition into the corporate world.I wish the participants grand success in the years to come and look forward to a positive response from your end.

Beyond Classroom
The IIM Lucknow offers learning experiences beyond the scope of classroom teaching by inviting eminent guest speakers and conducting workshops from time to time. We were fortunate to interact with following personalities and learn from their experiences Mr. Prahlad Kakkar: The Renowned ad-man spoke about things ranging from his penchant for hats, disdain for research and his love for the sea to his desire to see more entrepreneurs emerge from B-schools. The crux of his workshop was to show how important it is to stay ahead of change in advertising. Mr. Kakkar's leaving message to audience was to fight the system, which discourages individuality, and to go ahead and make your own decisions.

14

Mr. Kishore Biyani: No discussion on retail is complete without a mention of Future Group CEO Kishore Biyani. But what does Biyani, who is often credited with transforming the modern retail scene in India, have to say on the topic himself? His views on entrepreneurship and retail made for a scintillating interaction and a very enriching learning experience.

Dr. Kiran Bedi: When leaders speak, we listen. When icons speak, we are inspired. IPS officer and social activist Kiran Bedi demonstrated this subtle difference at IIM Lucknow. The Magsaysay Award winner spoke on a gamut of subjects, from the leadership crisis plaguing the country to harnessing the power of the youth in an effective way.

Dr. Subba Rao: One of the mostimportant people in the Indian economy as of today, the RBI Governor made an iconic visit to the IIM Lucknow campus, one of his few visits to prestigious educational institutes in the country He spoke at length about policy dilemmas from the perspective of the Reserve Bank of India. He also shared key insights on various tactics for managing growth inflation dynamics, current monetary variables and their implication on Indian growth.

Second career for defence officers

INDIAN Armed forces are amongst the finest in the world in terms of discipline, morale, technological prowess, a p o l i t i c a l & professional conduct and sheer size. Of late, it has been in the news for the wrong reasons including alleged instances of corruption at the highest levels One issue that has scarcely received any media of public attention is about a second career for the defence personnel exiting the forces. These officers are young (most of them in the prime of their youth), have withstood highest levels of physical and mental endurance of stress, and have successfully proven themselves at various technical and non-technical tasks entrusted to them. For the first 8-10 years of service, they are completely committed to their professional duties ( and are mostly away from their families). Over the past couple of months, I had a chance to interact with officers form different arms (engineers, armoured, infantry, navy, air force, supply corps, signals and EME amongst others). These officers, most of them aged 3040 years, had either taken voluntary retirement or were coming out of shortservice commission. They had served the nation for a period ranging from 5 to 15 years. Given the stateof-the-art and expensive equipment (including systems such as aircraft, ships, computers and server systems, satellite imagery) they handle is perception bias of the corporate world. For this, the defence ministry must make major efforts to create platforms for higher interactions and top honchos of the corporate world. One key area should be networking by participations in conferences, holding of events and allowing interactions of uniformed personnel with industry and a c a d e m i a b y presentation of technical papers and keynotes. This is quite common in developed countries why it is not so in India remains a m y s t e r y. I n t h o s e countries, armed forces make concerted efforts to provide information about the hi-tech materials they use, or the intense training the officers undergo. In our country, except the shining steel that one sees during Republic Day parades, people are unaware of the defence command structures, how the nation is kept secure through cyber security and zerofailure tolerances of the most complex and lethal machinery ever devised. We must be ashamed if a 35 year old submarine expert has to work as a school bursar for a livelihood. The least the nation can do is create opportunities for the young and capable defence officers to earn a decent livelihood without compromise of respect, responsibility and rewards.
(The writer is chairman of Center for Accelerated Learning, Innovation and Competitiveness, Germany, and professor

WASTED TALENT: In the absence of proper counseling of guidance, technically talented officers are compelled to turn to small-time placement agencies, missing out on specialist jobs
clear that these officers are exceptional and possess rate talent. As panoramic examples, one officer had worked on the battle-readiness of submarines, second had worked on training of pilots on aircraft carrier INS Viraat, third had commanded a precision guided missiles unit, fourth had been responsible for complete management and overhaul of special signaling equipment and fifth was the air traffic controller for supersonic fighters requiring split second zero-error decisions. Each machine costs several hundred crores and a mishap can lead to major loss of life as well. The question for each of them is to get settled down to a second career as a civilian. There are genuine issues here. One, it is true that the cultural structural and lifestyle gap between defence forces and corporate world is quite large. Second, the core values and core objectives too are substantially different. The latter cannot exist if it does not make money; the former has priorities of keeping the nation sage and secure. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, a stereotyped notion persists that officers from armed forces are good only for carrying out security, administrative, and g e n e r a l H R management tasks. It leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy that their technical and soft skills are hardly in demand. Our ignorance of various arms of our defence forces in inexcusable, though many factors are responsible for this. One of them is the separation of the military and civilians since the old British days which, in the modern day context is simplistic and archaic view of the nation's armed forces. For the leaving officers, the preferred choice is a job in the corporate world. Un fortunately, in the absence of proper career counseling or guidance, such talented officers are compelled to seek jobs through naukri-type websites and small time placement agencies. This approach hardly provides access to relevant upper management of specialist jobs. In leading democracies, the transition form uniform to civil life is seamless and smooth. The US, the UK, France and several other developed countries have had heads of state who earlier had donned military uniforms, notable examples being Eisenhower and De Gaulle. The Directorate of Resettlement for Armed Forces has launched 6month management d e v e l o p m e n t programmes in coordination with leading management institutions in India. However this effort is not sufficient to overcome the

of strategy and corporate governance, IIM Lucknow)
