LIGHT FROM THE EAST WM JAMES ANGELOS

Brothers here it is December already and my "Swan Song" is about to begin. First things first. I want to express my undying thanks to you Brothers for electing me as your Master of Leesburg Lodge No. 58. It has been a busy and sometimes trying year. A phrase that your Senior Warden and I exchange frequently is "Don't break anything". This past Saturday the Lodge was honored to be asked to participate at the "Rededication ceremony" for our first Master of Leesburg, W:. Melton Haynes. With permission from the Grand Lodge of Florida, the officers wore their aprons and jewels at the ceremony. The ceremony was very impressive, and the weather out did itself. It was a beautiful day with a beautiful and moving ceremony. I would like to thank the Sarah Isabella Chapter OCR for inviting the Lodge to participate. Monday the 25th was "Step Up Night". The Grand Lodge decreed that step up night will be held on a "Called Communication" and on a "Scheduled Communication". Thank you brothers who took the time from; Bingo, Monday night football, and other events that are held on Monday nights. The Brothers who were setting in the Chairs of Office that they would like to be elected to on Tuesday 3 December at 7:00P.M. This was the time to see the work that practice does. These Brothers are worthy to be elected to the "Chairs" that they were in. As you all know "Politicking" is forbidden in the Lodge or any where else. This would have been your only opportunity to see them work and have you make a educated vote. Rather than ask some one next to you "Who do I put down"? for the vote. As you all know Tuesday 17 December will be my last full opening and closing of the Lodge. This I approach with mixed emotions as you past Masters have. I take this opportunity to thank all who have come to meetings and supported my efforts to "Lead" the Lodge. Again THANK YOU!! Chaplins Corner My Brothers I hope this finds you all happy and well. We have been saddened by many losses this past year and they will be remembered at the closing of the Lodge of Sorrow. I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year in 2014! May the Great Architect Bless you and your families and loved ones and may he guide you in the coming year to be a good Mason all year long. May his blessings be on all our men and women of the Armed Forces both here and abroad and I hope that he will watch over and protect them in their duties to our beloved country. Bless this Lodge and this great country we live in and protect it from all enemies, both foreign and domestic. To all the Brothers of this Lodge and all the Lodges of the state of Florida I wish you Joy and Peace. I will be looking for you in Lodge this coming year.

Did You Know?
Brethren, the other day members of Leesburg Lodge attended a memorial dedication in Yalaha Cemetery for Civil War Captain Melton Haynes, founder of Leesburg Lodge. As a Civil War re-enactor for twenty years, I found the ceremony quite interesting. It also got me thinking about Masonry during the Civil War and the brotherhood that existed between the North and South during that time. Did you Know that the day after Vicksburg fell, Masons on both sides got together and held a meeting? And during this same time a Confederate lodge assisted in the burial of the Captain of a Union regiment. Did you Know that when Sherman marched through the South and was burning everything in sight, wives of Confederate Masons would put a Masonic symbol on the front of their house to prevent it from being burned to the ground? Did you Know the day after the Battle of Antietam, Union soldiers were searching the battlefield looking for injured comrades when they came upon a badly wounded Confederate soldier who handed them a note containing a mystic symbol that was scribed in his own blood? The officer of the Union company recognized it to be a symbol of Masonry and immediately had the wounded soldier taken to the field hospital and treated for his wounds. Did you Know that during the Civil War some 94 Union and 150 Confederate military lodges existed? Did you Know When Richmond, Virginia fell to Union soldiers in April 1865, mobs burned warehouses, blew up ships, and generally set fire to property along the James River? But the building known as Masons Hall was protected by a Federal provost marshal who was a member of Putnam Lodge in Massachusetts. He placed guarded around the building plus the homes of several members of the Lodge. Shortly thereafter Federals and Confederate members of the Craft met in harmony in the same building. Brethren, this is just a few of many stories about Masonic friendship during the Civil War. If you are interested, there is a lot more available on the Internet.

From the Secretarys Desk Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas Brothers! Here is hoping you will have a wonderful, safe holiday with family and friends. The elections are soon to be over and we will usher in a new corp of officers for 2014. It is my hope that you will support them throughout the year and allow them to make Leesburg Lodge No. 58 the best in the district. Dont forget to be at the Lodge for the elections and cast your vote for the good of the Lodge because if you dont vote you dont have the right to complain about how things are being run. Too many times in past years, that very thing has happened. We have Brother James Michael Thomas, who will be going through the Outdoor Degree in Umatilla on the 7th of December and joining our ranks. Please come out and support him in his degree. It would be so wonderful to have a huge crowd for this degree. Brothers, I still have approximately 18 names on the naughty list for their past dues. I sincerely hope to hear from them before the 27th of this month. If I have not heard a response from them, I will be forced by Regulation in the Masonic Digest of Florida to suspend them from the Craft. Their names will be read at the first Stated Communication of December. Brothers, this may be the last Trestle Board you will see mailed in this format. The cost of printing and mailing this document is becoming very prohibitive. The Budget Committee has met and determined that even though we are only mailing bimonthly, it is still too high an expense. They have proposed that we cut it down to two pages, printed one side, stapled and folded. I have checked with the printing company and it will cost more than if we reduce the size to four pages in the current format. This will reduce the cost to approx. $128.00 plus postage (which will remain the same, $109.00). I believe that if we get more sponsors this year, we can keep the format and size the same as we have had. I am still checking on the cost associated with this. The current sponsor cost is $20.00 for an individual or a couple and I am looking in to getting other commercial sponsors also. They would be charged a one time yearly fee of $100.00 to run every month in the e-mail version and bi monthly in the printed form. Please let me know what your thoughts are on this Brothers. See you at the election. W:.Hank DeBerry

Boy Scout Troop One News

On October 18 - 20, 2013 Troop 1 went to Camp Challenge, in the town of Sorrento, that is operated by the Easter Seals. The boys had a great time and a lot of fun. There were various activities where Troop 1 participated. They were able to receive their Disabilities Awareness Merit Badge. They competed in about 6 -10 activities that helped in understanding Disabilities. We received four ribbons. The first one was for Combustibility in which they had to start a fire using one free hand and the others with a pickup devise in which they won 1st place! The second one they did was Orienteering using a compass where they won 2rd place. The third ribbon they received was for participation in the activities and the camp out. The final ribbon was the most important, where they received 3rd place in the overall competition. There were about 12 - 13 Troops that attended the Camporee so they did real good to receive 3nd place in the overall competition. The weather was great. We are very proud of Troop 1, from Scoutmaster Jaime Velez, Assistant Scoutmaster Nelson Nunez and Assistant Scoutmaster Lamar Eury who will be retiring as the Scoutmaster on November 18, 2013. (Editors note: Article was too late to get into October Trestle Board)

THE HOLY SAINTS JOHN I was recently informed by a fifty year + Mason that he didnt realize there were two Saints John. Hopefully this will clear some things up for him and others who may be confused. -EditorMasonic lodges are dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. St. John the Baptist, whose day is June 14th, has been the patron of Freemasonry since the earliest writings of the craft. He was also the patron of many other organizations that had early effects on the formation of Masonic thought. St. John the Evangelist, whose day is Dec 27th, was selected as a patron saint of the craft at a later period, not earlier than the 16th century; slightly before the organization of modern Masonry, as we know it. In the medieval period of operative masonry, St. Thomas was the patron saint of architects and builders, and thereby of operative masons. He was available to our modern fraternity, but the Saints John was selected. The personal attributes and teachings of the St.s John exemplify Masonic teaching and practice. St. John the Baptist is well known for his personal integrity which induced him, under the most adverse circumstances, to adhere to the obligations he felt he owed to God and to his fellowman. While continually reproving vice, even to the king, he also preached of repentance and the need for a virtuous life. (Read - Luke 3:2-14) His adherence to his convictions cost him his life. St. John the Evangelist continually admonished his followers and readers to the cultivation of brotherly love. The entire thread of his Gospel and Epistles is that of the need for brotherly love. He over all other Saints and Disciples was allowed to witness many mystical visions. Possibly he was permitted this additional light because his spirit was in a condition to understand and utilize the light for the betterment of his fellow men. This he endeavored to do. The First Epistle of John is Masonic teaching in its purest form. While the need for brotherly love has existed since before the time of Cain and Abel, nowhere in the Bible is the formula given so clearly for this requirement than in the teachings of Jesus as detailed by St. John the Evangelist. With the foregoing in mind, it is very easy to understand why those two Saints were chosen to exemplify Masonic teaching and practice. It is also interesting to consider that no two individuals were more dissimilar in their personal characteristics and appearance, which in itself can convey a valuable lesson.
