1. OVERVIEW
The SpectralWave Universal Node Wide Band Manager (hereinafter U-Node WBM), along
with U-Node BBM (Broad Band Manager), is NECs next generation multi-service transport
system designed for transmission networks. The U-Node WBM has the flexibility and the
scalability to keep up with a broad spectrum of network topologies, and with expanding
traffic.
The U-Node WBM is compliant with specifications, such as ITU-T standards, and has
various interfaces, which make U-Node WBM compatible with any type of equipment. By
using the latest technologies and devices, U-Node WBM reduces power consumption
drastically, compared to conventional equipment, and realizes economical trunk transmission
equipment by downsizing. Also by using interface packages in common with those of U-
Node BBM, U-Node WBM has economic advantage for maintenance. The use of CID (NEC
Craft Interface Device application software) or NMS which controls the U-Node WBM
operation by interpreting TL1 language one of the typical languages to operate
transmission equipment makes operation easy and smooth for users.
As the core in the SpectralWave series, NECs optical network transmission equipment, the
U-Node WBM supports long-haul transmission networks using SDH 10G/2.5G optical
interfaces, and metropolitan networks using 600M, 150M, optical interfaces and STM1E
electrical interfaces.
The U-Node WBM is operational with various PDH interfaces (2M, 34M, and 45M), and
with LAN networks as well. U-Node WBM supports Ethernet Interface, such as
1000BASE-X, 100BASE-TX, and 10BASE-T, and colored optical interface which makes U-
Node WBM available to have its provisioning directly for WDM equipment.
As described above, the U-Node WBM which is operational with interfaces for various types
of transport networks, realizes network solutions for any user at a low cost.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Overview
1-3
In a long-haul transmission network, U-Node WBM provides an extremely reliable and fault-
resistant network in high-speed switching time by 10G/2.5G MS-SPRing protection and
SNC/P path protection. In addition, U-Node WBM is operational in the Multi-Ring network
configured by these MS-SPRing and SNC/P simultaneously. Using colored optical interfaces
makes seamless integration of U-Node WBM and NECs SpectralWave DWDM system,
which provides a broader amount of traffic capacity. U-Node Regenerator (REGs) can be
embedded between nodes, as well.
In the metropolitan/junction transport network, U-Node WBM also supports data interfaces,
such as Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, in addition to SDH and PDH interfaces, such as
STM-64 to STM-1.
In order to accommodate the proliferation of IP data traffic, the U-Node WBM uses virtual
concatenation and multiple packets to effectively transmit a data signal for the IP router and
ATM switch through an existing network.
With all these features, U-Node WBM realizes economical solutions to Metropolitan
Network by using these various interfaces.

2. APPLICATION
2.1 U-NODE WBM OPERATION
Equipment turn-up (activation), management, maintenance, and control of the U-Node
WBM can be operated easily and smoothly by using a CID (Craft Interface Device) which
interprets TL1 language. CID is an application software which runs on Windows operating
system.
In addition, the NMS (network management system) produced by NEC is operational, using
either OSI protocol and TCP/IP protocol, which enables to support traffic management,
control, and maintenance of the entire network configured by the U-Node WBM and NEC
SDH products.

2.2.3.10 34M/45M Interface Configuration
! E31/E32 Package Protection
Installation of E31 (34M) and E32 (45M) packages for Package Protection configuration has
the following rules for their switch-group priority:
E31/E32 packages must be installed into the slots from those for GRP 1 to GRP 4.
! E31 Package Protection Example
E3 TRM packages are required for E31 or E32 package protection. When E3 TRM package
is installed, E31 or E32 must configure Package Protection; using E3 TRM package for
E31/E32 package Non-Protection will cause traffic interruption.
E32 Package Protection also has the same configuration as shown below.

3. U-NODE WBM FEATURES
This section provides information on the capabilities and features of the U-Node WBM.
3.1 ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
3.1.1 Package Protection
U-Node WBM provides a redundant package configuration in order to protect supporting
traffic from interruptions. If package failure occurs, high reliability is secured by the
package switching protection.
3.1.2 Line Protection
To protect the line from traffic failure or a sudden cable-cut, U-Node WBM provides a line
switching configuration. Linear, 2F MS-SPRing, and 4F MS-SPRing are supported as the
switching types.
3.1.3 Overhead Protection
Regenerator Section Overhead (RSOH) Protection and Multiplex Section Overhead
Protection (MSOH) are interlocked with Linear or 4F MS-SPRing protection.
3.1.4 Path Protection
U-Node WBM supports the SDH High Order Path Selection function, Lower Order Path
Selection function, and the Path Protection function for all paths.
REFERENCE-2.1

GENERAL INFORMATION
U-Node WBM Features Architectural Features
3-2
3.1.5 Synchronization
U-Node WBM can select its equipment timing source from two external clock ports and ten
line facilities by specifying the quality levels and SSM. For the external clock selection, U-
Node WBM can support either of 2.048 MHz and 2.048 Mbit/s, according to the installed
package.
When an E12 interface package is mounted, U-Node WBM can also use incoming
2.048 Mbit/s traffic signals for its equipment timing source by selecting two lines from up to
504 of 2M traffics on the WBM shelf.
3.1.6 Multiple Ring Network
U-Node WBM is operational in different types of multiple ring networks with one piece of
network equipment. By setting Path Selection to two or more MS-SPRing or SNC/P
networks, U-Node WBM can support the Multiple Ring network.
3.1.7 External Clock Output
U-Node WBM can output an external clock selected from ten line facilities, two out of 2M
504 (at maximum) of 2M traffics, or an equipment timing source. U-Node WBM has two
interfaces to output external clocks.
3.1.8 Crossconnect
U-Node WBM has crossconnect functions of a high-order path at a maximum of 40G (256-
time slots when using VC-4 high order path) and a lower-order path at a maximum of 5G
(2016-time slots when using VC-12 path, or 96-time slots when using VC-3 lower order
path). Configurations of 1-way connection, 2-way connection, broadcast connection, and
hair-pin connection are available.
3.1.9 Virtual Concatenation
U-Node WBM supports Ethernet interface for seamless transport between Ethernet, and
enables IP packet traffic to be transported efficiently through existing SDH networks.

3.1.10 Memory Backup
U-Node WBM has a memory card to back up the system configuration.
3.1.11 Security Management
U-Node WBM provides a firm security function to protect the system from unauthorized
users.
3.1.12 History
U-Node WBM keeps history logs of User Operations and Alarm Reports for inspection.
These logs can be displayed, printed out, and saved to a file.
3.1.13 Standby Line Access (SLA)
For the line facilities configuring 1:1 Line Protection or Ring Protection, specifying a path to
the Protection side enables SLA. The SLA makes the best use of the bandwidth of these lines
where the Protection side path can also be in service while the Work side path has no failure;
if a failure occurs to the Work side path, the failed Work path will take over the Protection
side.
3.1.14 Colored Optical Interface
U-Node WBM can directly accommodate colored optical interface, which allows the U-
Node WBM to operate with a WDM system without using a transponder.
