This assessment will also be upon an observation of how well the student can discuss and demonstrate the sequence in the story.
I can... predict and summarize a book. I can... discuss cause and effect. I can... create a flipchart that illustrates cause and effect.
Leading Questions
What do you think bears do when they first wake up from hibernating? Who knows what cause and effect is? Who knows what it means to summarize and conclude a story.
The Book: Bear Wants More Premade cause and effect colored flip chart. YouTube video of Bear Wants More. Premade Popplet to fill in.
Pre- Stapled Blank flip charts. Crayons and Pencils Kindergarten Journals
Technology Use
In this lesson I will be able to integrate Technology by presenting a Popplet. I will have my students help me fill in the Popplet to illustrate the cause and effects of the story. Also, for better comprehension of the book I will allow my students to watch a Youtube video over Bear Wants more.
Now that you have helped me fill in my cause and effects lets illustrate the cause and effects on your flip charts. Explain how the flip chart works and show my premade example. Help the students as they remember the cause and effects. After students get done with their flip charts have them start the next activity. Activity 2: Have students get out their journals and draw a conclusion of what could happen to bear after the story was over. The story leaves bear and all of his friends at the party. Bear is full and his friends want more. What do you think bear will do since his friends want more and he does not? Do you think bear learned his lesson about not eating too much? The students will write two sentences and illustrate their sentences. Conclusion: As the conclusion I will replay the story on YouTube. This will help them comprehend and learn to appreciate books and readings in general. After the story we will discuss what we have learned and how we can use this in our every day lives. Cause and effect can be used in any situation. If you do something, something will happen.
Closure
In closing my lesson I will allow my students to watch Bear Wants More on YouTube. I will use this technology piece to help motivate my students in wanting to learn more about cause and effect. Alos, by showing my students the importance of reading. After the YouTube video is over we will have a closing discussion and restate our I can statements.
I will be able to assess what my students have learned by observation and their assignments; such as their flip chart, journal writing, and discussion. I will have my students reread the I can statements with me to ensure they understood their learning goals. I will review and link their learning to how we use cause and effect in every day life.
By the responses and the students assignments I will be able to identify if the student reached the objectives or if they need to be re-taught. I will also be able to assess the effectiveness of this lesson by the students answers. There will not be any following assignment for this lesson.
Cross-curriculum Connections
Reading is in almost every subject. Also, cause and effect can go across almost every subject as well.
Differentiated Instruction
For my highest level students:
On their flip charts I will ask them to write a few words describing their illustration of the causes and effects. I will require them to write three sentences written in their journals describing their conclusion of the story.
On their flip charts I will ask them to write one word to describe their illustrating of the causes and effects. I will require one to two sentences written in their journals describing their conclusion of the story.
On their flip charts I will ask them to just illustrate their description of causes and effects of the story. I will require one short sentence written in their journals describing their conclusion of the story.
Assignment
Assignment 1: Flip charts illustrating the causes and effects of the story. Assingment 2: Journal writing and illustration about the conclusion
