QUIRKY THINGS
Joger Bali is a Balinese t-shirt brand famous for printing witty and funny phrases on their products (these are for the most part in Indonesian). The brand was founded in the early 80s and since then has become a popular choice for unique souvenirs from Bali. Both domestic and international visitors can be found rummaging through the extensive range of products at their Kuta shop from their iconic t-shirts to mugs and home decorations. Some examples of their quirky products are a wall clock that shows time going counter-clockwise and giant ip-ops with their trademark

This shop really has everything under the sun when it comes to Balinese souvenirs. From simple I Love Bali t-shirts to batik shirts, paintings, home accessories, spa products and snacks. Speaking of snacks, I recommend you buy at least one box of Balinese milk pies (pie susu). These mini milk pies are not necessarily traditional Balinese snacks, but they have become one of the top food gifts to bring from Bali. Also, dont forget to pick up some Rahayu salted peanuts! puns. The peculiarity of Joger is also reected in the store. As you enter, the staff at the door put a sticker on you that says VIP, which in this case stands for Very Iseng (read: ddly) Person. The eccentricity of the brand can also be seen in the wall decorations, with phrases like West-East, EastWest, but Bali is the best! or (this one is translated) No man is perfect, I myself am tangible proof. Without even bringing anything to the register, visiting Joger is a treat in itself. Joger Pabrik Kata-Kata Jalan Raya Kuta, Kuta shops in Bali I recommend you go to the one at the beachfront Discovery Shopping Mall in Kuta. This shop occupies one wing of the mall, taking up almost the entire oor. Batik Keris vision is to become the center for Indonesian crafts, so they offer an extensive range of batik-based products and other locally produced items and handicrafts. There are also highquality snacks from Bali and other parts of Indonesia, and Indonesian By Miko Harada Luwak coffee, which is said to be the most expensive coffee in the world. Of course, a certain level of quality has to come at a certain level of price, but in my opinion the value makes it money well spent. Plus, you get to hunt for your trinkets in comfort and style. Batik Keris at Discovery Shopping Mall Jalan Kartika Plaza, Kuta
If youre able to take more time to really look for holiday gifts, there are other places you can wander through such as the which specializes in souvenirs, and the Sukawati Art Market in Ubud, which is famous for its artistic mementos. If you can manage a bit of haggling, you might even be able to get your souvenirs at bargain prices.

HOLIDAY FESTIVITIES
Speaking of your nearest and dearest, the festive season is just around the corner and Bene is taking part in the holiday cheer! Theyll be serving a selection of four to six courses of Roman home-style dishes on Christmas Eve and Christmas
Were loving the home-style cooking here. Who used to cook for you back home? My grandma was the main cook. And she had six daughters, so I was in paradise. We caught up with Executive Chef Rossano Renzelli during our visit for a brief chit chat about his family and his memories of Italy... Wow... in that kind of house, how could you not grow up loving food? (laughs) Yes! If theres something you dont like, once youre in Italy youre gonna like it! At Bene, I want to cook
Whats your favorite new dish on the menu? The Fettucini with lobster. Also the rabbit-stuffed Tortellini with oxtail sauce. What do you usually cook when youre not at work? At home, my wife is the one who cooks. She usually tells me to get out of the kitchen before I start commenting! How about your daughter, whos cooking does she prefer? My 8-year old daughter likes
Tell us about your tattoos. How many do you have? Banyak (many)! I like to draw so my tattoos are my own design. These are souvenirs from my travels some people get stickers for their car; I get stickers for my skin. What countries are your tattoos mementos of? Argentina, the UK, Germany, Italy, France In Bali I had my arm lled in and the tattoo artist didnt trace at all, he just drew freely. I started with one, now I look like a newspaper!

SPREAD THE
WE CHAT WITH AMERICAN MUSICIAN MICHAEL FRANTI, HEADLINER AT THE SOULSHINE FESTIVAL THIS DECEMBER.
L.O.V.E.
Bali & Beyond (BB): Could you please share with our readers: who is Michael Franti in a nutshell? Michael Franti (MF): My goal in life is to promote positivity through music, dance and laughter. Im equal parts father, musician, lmmaker, activist, yogi, business owner and full time clown. My mother always asks me, Michael, what are you going to do IF you grow up? Im still working on that part! BB: Tell us your thoughts on the power of music. MF: Every night of my life I see people transformed by the healing touch of music. I see folks walk into shows with a at expression and see them smile, laugh, cry, dance ecstatically, hug their friends and BB: What are your biggest inspirations for your newest album? MF: My new record is called All People and its about the beauty and power of diversity. Every person on this planet is signicant, every life matters. The record asks the age-old question, if I only have X amount of days on this planet, who do I want to spend them with? What do I want to do and what do I want to leave behind? BB: Youve worked with Sam Hollander, who has collaborated with the likes of Train, One Direction and leave standing taller than when they came in. When our minds are taxed and our bodies tired, our soul says, Dont stop, you can go a little further, love a little more. The soul knows no limits and music opens the window of the soul. Thats why I love it. Music reminds me everyday to go beyond. BB: Your songs 11:59 and Say Goodbye were inspired by the shooting of a young man named Trayvon Martin in the US. What do you think we can learn from tragic events such as this? MF: Unfortunately we see the Trayvon Martin tragedy taking place all over the world every day. People die needlessly, long before they should. Whether its from war, disease, gang violence, police brutality or drug overdoses, the pain of those left behind is the same, no matter what country or religion. The lesson in it is to value each precious moment we are given and to not quit when things get difcult. The world is worth ghting for.

Katy Perry, for the songs Wherever You Are and I Dont Wanna Go. Can fans expect more of a pop sound from this album? MF: Sam is an incredible producer who has worked on all types of music from Afro-beat to mainstream pop. The sound of this record is very eclectic. Acoustic guitars, dance beats, reggae, Hip-hop its all in there. Our song Im Alive is all over pop radio in America, but the rest of the album takes you on a journey. BB: What kind of message do you want to communicate while youre here for the Soulshine Festival? MF: The Soulshine Festival is a benet for the Yayasan Bumi Sehat birthing clinic and for The Green School; both are organizations in Bali that are doing incredible things to save lives
and the planet. We want the festival to be an annual event where people can come together, dance, rock out, practice yoga, be inspired by the amazing and celebrate the positivity in our community. BB: Who are some acts that youre personally excited to see at the Soulshine Festival? MF: Im excited to see Trevor Hall and Ethan Tucker, both friends of mine who are getting really popular in America but have never played in Bali. I love Nahko from Medicine for the People and we have a lot of great DJs on the ticket to keep the dance going late. There will be yoga in the daytime and incredible speakers who will be dropping knowledge about the environment and sustainability. Im excited about all of it!
BB: Sounds great! So tell us, what is your favorite thing about Bali? MF: The people. I am inspired by the Balinese way of life, the communal living and decisionmaking, the honoring of the spirit world, the creativity, art and beauty in form and function. There is so much that the rest of the world can learn from Bali. I always tell people when they are coming here to take some time away from the beaches, go to the rice elds, talk to the farmers, sit with the carvers, watch the offerings being made. There is so much to learn. BB: Any last words for our readers? MF: Yes Grab your dancing shoes and come to the Soulshine Festival December 27th and 28th. Youre going to love it!!!

and superb views of Jimbaran Bay, a pebbles throw away an idyllic and peaceful spot for al fresco treatments. As since it was yet another sunshine-lled day in Bali, I opted to have some of my treatments on the Upper Bale, starting with a purifying footbath ritual with natural sea salt and lime, then a deepstroke Balinese massage that kept to its promise to soothe the nervous system, calm the mind and relieve tension and stress (how did they know I was coming?). Spa Uluwatus all natural, pure spa products are exclusively custommade for InterContinental, and include a series of aromatherapy essential oils. My personal choice here is Balancing, with coldpressed soya bean oil infused with
zingy ginger and lime. A therapeutic foot massage incorporating the ancient Chinese practice of reexology is not so soothing, but good for the sole. Moving into the Villa Retreat and the indoor private treatment room (which may be more suited to fans of air-conditioning), the exfoliating and purifying skin scrub comes next. My personal scrub formula choice is the aromatically spicy Lulur, endorsed by Javanese royals as part of lavish pre-wedding bridal preparations. And speaking of royalty, as I lie there caked in a golden-hued grainy concoction (reecting the main ingredient, turmeric, which carries unique cleansing properties), my villa therapist prepares a bath lled with red rose petals. I then
soak and contemplate for fteen minutes, before taking a nal all-over slathering of rich body moisturizer. Whichever villa or treatment you choose, they all offer post-treatment downtime in the garden bale, while enjoying a fresh fruit platter and wellness herbal tea. This Ultimate Escape certainly turned out to be an indulgent, almost nurturing all-over treatment that puts you right back on track, but where the ocean-side setting and Balinese ambience is surely just as therapeutic. hardly unique to Indonesia. But sometimes you are confronted by something that just cant be ignored. Earlier this year I opened Facebook to discover photographs posted by Sole Men Indonesia (a non-prot organization) of two families who were living in absolute squalor in a tiny house in Denpasar. Seven of the ten children suffer from a genetic abnormality that has left them physically and mentally handicapped. Pictures of the 17 and 20-year old men, lthy and crippled in pain, were absolutely heart breaking. Their pain and suffering screamed out from the images; for them life was nothing but a living hell. Even

the Sole Men volunteers, well versed in dealing with the worlds disadvantaged, were shocked by what they had discovered. No one should be left to suffer like this, says Robert Epstone, the co-founder of Sole Men who rallied to collect donations and raise money for food, basic health care and wheelchairs. I like to support Sole Men because they are not some huge faceless charity. They operate at a very grassroots level within the community and all donations go directly to the source. Recently I gathered bags of bed linens, cooking equipment and clothes supermarket to buy household items, toiletries and food. Arriving at one of the dropoff points I met co-founder Beat de Gruneck, who was incredibly kind and appreciative and I felt

and having little access to electricity, running water, health care or education. While many Balinese in the south of the island have benetted from land sales and tour operations, its a different story for struggling farmers in the arid regions of the north, the Javanese migrants who cross the sea in search of work, and those who dwell in the slums and rubbish dumps of Denpasar fending for themselves as best they can. Its easy as a tourist or an expat to turn a blind eye poverty is

truly humbled. Here was a man who works tirelessly within the community, a true force of good, and my offerings seemed so meagre in comparison to what he has done. But I realized that although I wasnt giving that much, it was still something, and would make a difference to someone. Thankfully, others around the island have also heeded the call. As individuals, there is only so much we can do, but as a community we can have a real impact. The Hard Rock Bali, and much loved rock bands including Superman is Dead and Navicula, have also heard of the families plight and joined forces to stage a 2-day charity concert, raising over $30,000 to rehouse the families. Land has now been secured and two RPC houses, sourced from recycled plastic, have been donated. Volunteers have created wheelchair-friendly permaculture gardens that the disabled children will be able to look after, and it is hoped that the families will become sustainably self-sufcient. Sarah Chapman, who drives the outreach program for Sole Men, describes a very different picture now on her visits to the family. The three unaffected girls have been sponsored to go to school, there is now basic bedding and food, and the boys, assisted by therapists, have started to smile and learn to play like Who are Sole Men Indonesia? This non-prot organization was formed to raise awareness and provide funds to support accredited agencies and projects for the disadvantaged in Bali. Co-founder Robert Epstone has a strong background in charity work and has declared his intention to be barefoot until the organization raises one million US Dollars, in solidarity with those who dont have a choice to wear or not wear shoes. As well as raising awareness through sponsored walks, Sole Mens primary focus is helping with individual cases of suffering in Bali. Epstone is driven by seeing the joy on childrens faces when their lives are changed. There are many ways to support Sole Men and their valuable work; check their website www.solemen.org and Facebook page: Indonesia Sole Men. children. Where once there was only despair, now there is hope. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, says Chapman. This last October, Sole Men again joined forces with Hard Rock Bali to launch the 6th annual global Imagine theres no hunger campaign. While Hard Rock is most commonly associated with music, its roots lie deep in philanthropy. Its part of our DNA, says Hamish Dodds, Hard Rock Intl President and CEO. Renowned Jakarta rock band Kotak supported the launch with a charity concert at Hard Rock, where ticket sales and merchandise raised US$10,000 for Sole Men. Nutritionally cooked meals were also distributed to 600 people living in the poorest areas of Denpasar, including the dump site. This has been followed with the issue of food parcels three times a week to 100 needy people. Many of us could do with taking a good look at our own lives, including the things we take for granted and our more trivial concerns. Everything is put in perspective when you become aware of the suffering that is part of daily life for countless people here in Indonesia. Surely kindness and compassion are the way forward, and each of us can give just a little bit, like old clothing, a small monetary donation, sponsoring a child to go to school or buying household or medical items for needy families. It costs us so little, but can contribute to changing someone elses life, and in the process we can learn the valuable lesson that giving is even more rewarding than receiving. By Alison Bone

Open for just a year now, Bungalow has quickly become one of the favorite places in Canggu for people to grab a bite to eat or have afternoon tea/coffee. This caf has the kind of warm and quirky dcor that makes you feel so comfortable you end up lingering there for hours. Open for breakfast and lunch on weekdays and Saturdays, they offer healthy and delicious menu items based on co-owner Giovannas personal recipes. We particularly love the delicious range of ourless and gluten-free cakes like the Peanut Butter & Banana Cake made with freshly grinded homemade peanut butter. Bungalow also offers a range of colorful home wares designed and produced themselves, such as cushions, home accessories and tote bags. And on Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m. Giovannas husband Donald (a Balinese jazz musician) has impromptu jam sessions with his buddies in the intimate space. Recently, the husband-wife team have also opened up the Bungalow Gallery, which sits opposite the caf. The gallery features Giovannas photography and their own range of furniture. The folks at Axioo love Bali so much that they couldnt resist making its magnicent landscapes the backdrop for capturing countless love stories. As their minds overowed with ideas, they decided to set up a showrom in the Kerobokan area and have since documented numerous weddings, engagements and even family holidays in paradise. Take a look at some of their work and marvel at how well they have incorporated the Balinese landscape into these romantic shots. is an astonishing place. But what I have noticed however, is that friends I havent seen for years suddenly call me out of the blue (usually during school holiday times) and think its high time that we all catch up for old times sake.

Reading between the lines, what this actually means is that throughout the year, my home often becomes a sort of hotel that is full of guests who expect to be fed, and more importantly, entertained. At times I have felt a little like a recreation ofcer, wracking my brains at breakfast when the inevitable question arises, So whats on the agenda for today? Recently and quite by chance, I
found the perfect solution for sending my guests off to see this beautiful island through an exciting activity.
40 JOYOUS KILOMETERS
It was my partner who decided one day that we should get out of the house and treat ourselves to a weekend in Ubud. As an added bonus, we would be going on an all day 40 km bicycle ride.
78
Now, not being the ttest of the human species, the thought of peddling up and down Balis steep terrain did not exactly ll my heart with joy. In fact, I was more than a little apprehensive. Finally, the dreaded day arrived when the company that ran our tour picked us up. The minivan was occupied by people of all nationalities and ranging in age from 7 to 70, and a splendid bunch they turned out to be. The van meandered up and down hills and after about an hour we arrived at Penelokan (Kintamani), where breakfast awaited us in a restaurant that offered jawdropping views of Mount Batur and its crater lake. This alone was almost worth the price of the tour. Breakfast complete, we took a
short drive to an open eld where about 50 mountain bikes were parked and we were asked to make our selection. I was rather taken with a shiny blue number with ery racing stripes running down the crossbar. Once my steed had been selected it was time to choose a helmet from a vast array of styles and colors. A helpful guide was there to ensure that I had it on the right way round! Still feeling a little apprehensive about the upcoming ride, our lead guide us gave a very detailed safety brieng that ended with the words, Now for those in the group who are not that t (I swear his eyes fell upon me), not to worry. From here its all downhill. (This guy was now denitely one of my best friends ever!)
DOWN WE GO
With a lead guide in front and one at the back, we set off. Within the rst ve minutes I realized that it was perhaps the most fun I had had in a long time. Descending towards Ubud, we whizzed through charming villages that are off the major roads. Most of the small lanes are tree lined, which sheltered us from the midday sun. There were a few mandatory stops along the way. At the rst stop, our group paused to experience a Balinese family compound. The intricate layout of a typical family residence was explained in great detail, then it was back on the bikes for some more downhill adventure before the next stop at a small coffee plantation.
79
Here we were led through an explanation about the growing, preparation and roasting of various blends, and then small cups of coffee and cocoa were set out for tasting. Included in the selection was the worlds most expensive coffee called Luwak. This brew is made from beans that have been ingested and excreted by civets! Back on the bikes, we took a leisurely pace as we cruised past emerald green rice elds. The workers, replete with conical hats, raised their heads from their toil to give the riders a friendly wave. (At this stage I was seriously considering entering the next Tour de France. I mean how hard could it be?)
Time and the distance seemed to y by as we passed through pretty village after pretty village and more rice elds set in impossibly beautiful valleys. All too soon we reached our destination a restaurant set in the middle of a splendid rice paddy where a sumptuous lunch was laid out. For the tter and more adventurous, a 20 minute uphill bike ride was offered in order to get the heart racing. I gratefully declined,
choosing a cold Bintang and some wonderful sate instead. This day out is one of the best tours you can experience in Bali. It is fun, informative and exhilarating and I promise you that you wont need to pedal once! THE METROPOLIS
Just like any other city, Jakarta grew from the size of a small town to one of the largest cities in the world. The citys metropolitan area is now known as Jabodetabek (a name formed by combining the initial syllables of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi) with the suburbs still continuing beyond that, and a population of over 30 million people according to the Brookings Institute.

blocks, hotels, ofce towers and shopping malls have pushed the city down the path of becoming a great metropolis. Nevertheless, some problems still persist. The lack of mass transportation is considered the main major aw. With around 15 million people living in the urban area and thousands commuting from the suburbs and other outer areas in the daytime, the need for mass transportation is paramount. Spending two to four hours a day to commute has become a wearisome task for many of the citys dwellers. As an economic, cultural and political center, Jakarta without question acts like a giant magnet for the 220 million people outside of it. It is no wonder that as the city develops in size, old problems grow and new problems arise. Housing problems, oods, mass

However, Jakarta still posses charm and an undeniable attractiveness despite the mounting problems. As much as one can complain about the city, one still loves it no matter what. The city has become that annoying sibling you have who will break your car and steal the clothes off your back, but you will still love them despite the grief they caused you. What Ive come to realize is that we should all take a moment to enjoy this great big city and take the good with the bad. By doing so, well more easily enjoy our time here and go forth into the future with enthusiasm and optimism. By Fadil Aziz
When I was on a ight in the 70s, I remember approaching the former international airport, Halim Perdana Kusuma, and looking through the window of the plane seeing the expanse of densely packed residential areas with orange clay-roofed houses and only a handful of skyscrapers. That was Jakartas skyline 30 years ago. Since then, the capitals skyline has changed and developed so much, with highway yovers cutting around and across a swarm of tall buildings. Even though the orangeroofed houses are still visible, the number of skyscrapers in Jakarta has grown exponentially. Apartment

HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
